On Sunday, November 11, 2012 the ASGA
Jacksonville Chapter had a great time at the
Deercreek Golf and Country Club. We ended up
with 9 players: Charlie Cunningham, Bill
Boyer, Kathy Weedon, Florrie Redick, Bernie
Connelly, Mark Aquino, Bridget Baxendale,
Bill Casey and Pam Wagner.
Although Deercreek is quite challenging, the
weather could not have been better. We played
the Putt Game. Bernie Connelly won for lowest
putts and Florrie Redick and Bill Boyer won for
the most putts. Afterwards, we all came in and
Deercreek had a room set up for us all to have
lunch. What a wonderful outing!!! ~Pam Wagner

November 25, 2012
It was a cold start on November 25 for eight
members of ASGA at Magnolia Point GCC.
Then as the day progressed it was removal of
layer after layer of clothes. The day turned out to
be beautiful after a freezing start! The golfers
were joined by President Arkin and a Mike Lamphier who is recovering from knee replacement
to have 10 dine and discuss future events. A
good time was had by all! ~Hattie Reddinger

Chipping Instruction

Many players lift their head too soon when
chipping because they are eager to see
where the ball is going, or they try to help
the ball into the air, which causes them to
look up too soon. This leads to very inconsistent contact. A simple thought to incorporate is to keep your head down until you
hear the ball hit the green. If you are still
looking down when you hear the ball hit the
green you can be assured that you have not
raised your head too soon. You will find your
consistency improve immediately.

To get a fuller swing while increasing your
balance, try taking some slow practice
swings with your feet together. Many players
have a tendency to sway back and forth in
their swing and with your feet together you
obviously can’t do that. This drill teaches you
what it feels like to stay centered over the
ball. You will also find that you are able to
get a much fuller turn. This drill will show you
what it feels like to get a good, full turn while
maintaining good balance. To top it all off,
you are also going to find that your tempo is
a lot more even, too.

People always ask me, "How can you help
me get more distance?" My answer for them
is increasing lower body strength. The golf
swing is a complex sequential transfer of
energy from the feet all the way through the
hands into the clubhead. Most people lack
the appropriate lower body strength to rotate
properly and cannot create the energy to
initiate the swing like elite players do.
Squats are the best way to work all of the
muscles of the lower body while promoting
mobility and stability in the kinetic chain.
Squats can be done with just the body
weight or we can go for power reps with
barbells. Either way, you will be promoting
lower body strength, muscles will activate
more effectively, and you will add more
yards to your clubs.
Body Weight and Barbell Squats: The
feet should be shoulder width apart with the
toes pointed outwards. You may set a chair
or bench behind you to promote proper motion of this exercise. I advise my players to
cross their arms across their shoulders and
keep the eyes on the horizon. This allows
the weight to come down through the heels
and relieve the ankle and knee from unneeded stress. You may slightly touch the
chair behind you but do not rest. Push up
through your heels and repeat for 15 reps. 23 sets a day will activate the glutes, develop
much needed strength in the lower body,
and will create a lot more power in your
swing!

Tip of the Week
"The most common driving issue for golfers is the dreaded slice. To fix this, practice
using a split grip or, 'hockey grip.' This will
allow your right side to rotate over your left
side to make the ball curve right to left."
Exercise of the Month
This month’s featured exercise is the under club crunch. The Under Club Crunch
is a great utilization of a tool you should
have, a golf club! Begin lying on your back
with the club in both hands. One should be
on the grip and the other on the shaft or club
head. You will keep your feet together
through the movement and bring them under
the club to effectively work and strengthen
the abdominal muscles. The abdominals are
an essential group of muscles for rotation,
torso and hip flexion, and maintaining posture throughout the golf swing. Strengthening these muscles will go a long way in
strengthening the abdominals and creating
core stability.
Perform this exercise slowly and remember to breathe in on the way down and out
as you crunch.
