PUBLISHER’S NOTE
Dear Readers,
It’s hard to imagine anything that’s harder,
more fun, and ultimately more satisfying, than
completing the first 2.5 years
of a new venture still standing.
This issue of Cambodia Insight
is our eleventh quarterly
publication. It’s been, as the
Navy promises, not a job but
an adventure.
Heartfelt thanks to our many readers. You’ve
proven again and again that you’ll visit an online
publication. We appreciate your attention, as well
as your comments and suggestions. Every one of
them was read, and many adopted. We’re grateful.
Heartfelt thanks, too, to our advertisers. We don’t
charge our many readers, and your generous support
has made this possible. We hope that your business
has benefited from the attention your ads garnered
both locally and internationally. We’re grateful.
Heartfelt thanks, as well, to our contributors.
You’ve supplied us with interesting – indeed
fascinating – insights into this Land of Wonder
and its warm, welcoming people. The quality of
your work shone brightly. We’re grateful.
Heartfelt thanks, finally, to our staff. You’ve
worked tirelessly and without complaint under the
pressures of deadlines.
4
You’ve brought creativity to Cambodia Insight,
along with a full measure of talent, hard work and
good spirits. We’re grateful.
As we look ahead to 2013, we’re encouraged that
we’ve weathered the initial growing pains and can
focus now even more on producing the leading
publication about Cambodian life, business,
culture, and especially responsible tourism.
What will future issues bring? We’ll continue to
spotlight the growing numbers of visitors and
investors, the important role of investment and
relations with our neighbors. And most of all we’ll
continue to bring to our readers the wonders of the
Land of Wonders, our adopted home.
As always, your readership, your advertising
support, and your comments will help us make
this the leading publication of its kind on the
internet. We’re truly grateful.
Sincerely,
Charles R. Evans, Publisher

Kickboxing Cambodia Style
In Cambodia three martial arts are practiced.
The most popular isBradal Serey, which is kickboxing, with nearly the same rules and style as
Thai Boxing (Muay Thai). Bradal Serey is the
national sport, and the television networks
broadcast professional fights weekly.
Bokator (the Thai variation is called Muay
Thai Boran, see below under ‘The Difference’)
is an all-encompassing ancient fighting art,
includes punches, kicks, knees, elbows, grappling, ground fighting, and weapons. The
practitioners fight without gloves. Their hands
are wrapped with ropes or traditional krama
scarves.
Japbab Boran Khmer (Khmer wrestling) is the
least practiced of the Khmer martial arts. There
are a handful of wrestling clubs country wide.
They meet annually for the national wrestling
competition, which is a big spectator event. In
Khmer wrestling, the goal is to force the opponent’s back onto the ground.
Almost gone Khmer boxing was on the verge
of extinction, together with all forms of Khmer
12
culture, during Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge regime
(1975-1979). Pradal Serey had been banned and
many boxers were executed which caused the
art of Khmer Kickboxing to be almost wiped
out from Khmer history.
Following the country’s slow recovery from
the 20 years-old civil war that erupted after the
Khmer Rouge were ousted by the Vietnamese
in 1979, Khmer boxing slowly resurfaced in
small private schools in Phnom Penh. Far from
being commercial operations, such schools
were created by survivors, to pass whatever
was left of Pradal serey to the new generations,
thus keeping the country’s heritage alive.
The Difference between Muay Thai and Bokator
Muay Thai and Bokator clearly share a lot of
similarities, but one primary difference is that
Bokator is a system. Muay Thai Boran is not.
You study Muay Thai, and if your teacher
knows Boran, he teaches you some movements in isolation. For example, he advocates
JANUARY - APRIL, 2013
kicking with the bottom or side of your foot,
instead of just shin kicks. Or, he teaches you
spinning back kicks or heal kicks, instead of
just roundhouse. Bokator, on the other hand,
is a complete system, like a traditional martial
arts. There are belts, and you learn movements,
forms, and techniques in order. The weapons
include the double stick, double swords, long
staff and scarf.
Through an exotic blend of Asian fight science
and sheer vicious brutality, the Muay Thai style
of kick-boxing has come to dominate the standup world of combat sport fighting. Over the
last decade, the sport has grown from a littleknown Thai passion into a multi-million-dollar
global industry. The sport of Thais, however,
casts roots far beyond the borders of Siam.
Burma, Cambodia, Lao and Malaysia all claim
heritage to native fight styles. In Cambodia, the
local style is widely known as Kun Khmer, an
English-friendly version of the more formal
name Kbach Boran Khmer. The sport here is
less mature than next door, with fewer practitioners. Exact figures are hard to come by. The
number of professional fighters in Thailand is
estimated to be around 70,000. In Cambodia,
even at the best of times, it’s about 700.
But Khmer fighters are no less dedicated, their
fans no less passionate. Across Phnom Penh,
four television stations host 9 fight cards every
week, sometimes more. Female fights and professional and amateur boxing matches pepper
the line-ups. The stations beam fights from the
capital to homes and coffee shops around the
countryside, where men-folk gather in weekly
ritual.
In Phnom Penh, live fights are extremely accessible. Entrance is free, and local crowds are generally gracious and accommodating to visiting
foreigners. Much like in the pits of Lumpini,
the gamblers gravitate together, flashing hand
signs and screaming at fighters, sometimes encouragement, sometimes abuse.
Getting There Most stadiums are on the outskirts of Phnom Penh. Ask any moto-taxi or
tuk-tuk driver. He will get you there.
The Stadiums

French influence is still noticeable here
in Cambodia in many ways. French bread is
one example. Most Asians do not eat bread but
the Cambodians do, and vendors such as these

Kampong Chnang Province in Cambodia is noted for its pottery bowls, braziers, pots,
and cooking ware which are used all over the
country. Most of them travel slowly by strawpacked ox carts such as this one, part of a threecart convoy making its way through Phnom
Penh to southern markets.
3.
Motorcycle Loads : There really isn’t
much room left on this motorcycle for anything else! This kind of load is common at 6:00
o’clock in the morning when these motorcycle

wet markets to the small street vendors around
town.

You don’t see scenes like this very much
on the streets of developed countries. Maybe
once in a great while someone would actually run out of gas, but it is rare to see someone
pouring gas into a car. Not in Cambodia. This
happens all the time. Gas is smuggled in--quite
openly--and then sold on the streets--quite
openly.

Song Saa Island
Ocean of Life Happy 2013 everyone
A few days ago I stumbled across a fact, of which I had
been previously unaware. Apparently, around 50 percent of our
planet’s oxygen is derived from
phytoplankton (actually, fact
checking further, some scientists
suggest the figure may be as high
as 85 percent).
Phytoplankton are microscopic
organisms that inhabit the sunlit layers of the world’s oceans
and fresh water. Their capacity
to convert sunlight into energy,
which can be used by other creatures, in short by eating the phytoplankton, put them at the heart
of the marine ecosystem. The
fact that oxygen is a by-product
of this conversion process makes
these little creatures doubly important, putting them squarely in
the centre of our lives as well!
This and other facts can be found
in Callum Robert’s recent book
Ocean of Life: How Our Seas
Are Changing. By way of background, Ocean of Life sets out to
explain the importance of marine
systems to life on the planet, before breaking down some of the
key threats to them and by association, remember the phytoplankton, our health and well-being. In
the last part of the book, meanwhile, Roberts explores some of
the options for reversing these
challenges.
As you might anticipate, the book
makes for some sober reading,
but what I also like about it and
why I recommend it here, is that
Roberts offers solutions to the
20
JANUARY - APRIL, 2013
problems he identifies. One of
these, the establishment of marine protected areas, is one that
Song Saa has been a pioneering
in Cambodia since 2006.
You can read more about this
particular effort in the story that
follows, while in our Spot of the
Month you can learn about a particular coral reef near Song Saa,
which illustrates well the enormous value of these systems to
ocean life.
Setting the Example - Marine
Protection Around Song Saa
Marine ecosystems are of vital
importance to local communities
in both the developed and developing world. Globally, less than
one percent of the world’s oceans
are under official protection, yet
55 percent of the planet’s people
are directly reliant on the sea
for their sustenance. The rest of
us also benefit from the numerous ecosystem services that our
oceans provide, including their
roles as carbon sinks and drivers
of the globe’s weather.
The economic reliance on the sea
around Song Saa is understandably high, with nearly all villagers being dependent on it for their
well-being and livelihood. This is
unsurprising, given their island
location, but what is surprising
is the lack of formal protection
that exists to manage and protect
their local waters. This is one reason that the work of the Song Saa
Conservation and Community
team, in developing and promoting marine protected areas, is so
important.
By way of background, over the
last two years the team has been
working with the local fisheries
committee, government authori-
ties and local fishers to establish
the Song Saa Coral Reef and
Biodiversity Conservation Area.
This zone will work in conjunction with the already established
Song Saa Marine Protected Area
to further enhance the sustainable management of the waters
around Song Saa.
It has taken many long hours
by the team to get to this point.
However, with the formal signing
of the new conservation zone due
in the coming weeks, Song Saa
is confident that it has developed
a proposal that will be effective
and widely supported. No small
undertaking in a place where marine conservation designations
are a novel concept.
As for the proposed conservation
area itself, the expanded zone
will cover the entire bay between
Song Saa Private Island and Koh
Rong, and extend further north
and south of these two locations.
This expanded tract will build on
the existing Song Saa marine protected area, originally established
in 2006, and will cover additional
portions of coral reef and deeper
water locations. Such zones are
crucial in the lives of numerous
fish species that are unique and
special to the Koh Rong archipelJANUARY - APRIL, 2013
21
ago, including pick-handle barracuda, giant clams, sea horses and
parrotfish.
The new protected area is also
anticipated to dovetail with the
Cambodia government’s intentions to establish a much larger
conservation
sphere, covering a
broad portion of the
Koh Rong archipelago. We at Song Saa
anticipate that our
advanced work in
promoting marine
conservation will
inspire others to engage and embrace
this initiative and its
efforts to promote
the sustainable use
of the archipelago’s
marine resources.
Spot of the Month –
Five Mile Beach Reef
Being fortunate to swim in a new
location is always a pleasure for
a diver, especially when that site

turns out to be a spectacular and
vibrant coral reef.
Recently I had just such an experience when, with the arrival
of Song Saa’s new dive instructor, Jelena, we decided that it was
time to go out and hunt for some
half-way down the fabulous Five
Mile beach, which lies on the
eastern side of the large island
of Koh Rong, about 30 minutes
from Song Saa. The reef sits in
nine metres of water, which ensures that its corals have access
to all the sunlight they require.
Further, because the
surrounding waters
are extremely clear,
a diver can fully
appreciate the stunning colours of the

On our first dive we
were fortunate to observe a wide variety
of species, from shy
blue-spotted stingrays to porcupine
fish. We were also
visited by a large array of colourful reef
fish, which encircled us as we
swam through their schools.
The first location we explored
was a beautiful coral reef about

coral outcrop - which marine biologists commonly refer to as a
‘bombie’. In our case the reef
outcrop was found to be about
four-square meters in size, and
consisting of a single coral colony.
Given the slow rate of growth
for coral species this colony was
probably several milieus old. And
with its ability to produce large
volumes of larva - corals develop
from polyps that are released into
the ocean by mature members of
the species - this colony was likely the main source of juveniles for
many of the surrounding reefs. In
addition to the bombie colony we

house, supporting two to three
inhabitants; a coral reef, in contrast, is an invariable marine skyscraper, supporting thousands of
different residents. This is why
the protection of such systems is
of vital importance to the health
of our planet’s oceans.

Single-entry visa for Thailand,
Cambodia
Citizens from 35 nations qualify; seen paving the way for single Asean visa
From today( 27/12/2012), tourists from 35

part of Acmecs
Single Visa - the

Visitors

countries can apply for a visa at

The Acmecs Single Visa should
boost tourism in
both countries as well as fulfil Thailand’s objective to become a regional hub for tourism,
said Foreign Minister Surapong Towichukchaikul, who jointly chaired a joint commis24
sion on bilateral cooperation with his Cambodian counterpart Hor Namhong yesterday.

The original idea to have a Schengen-style
tourist visa was introduced at a meeting in

Bagan, Myanmar in 2003 between leaders of
Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand. At
the meeting they launched the “four countries-one destination” scheme, which Vietnam joined later. Foreign ministers of Acmecs then agreed at a 2005 meeting in Siem
Reap that Thailand and Cambodia would try
to implement the single-visa strategy first.
“If the initial project is successful, then the
remaining Acmecs members will join the
scheme,” Surapong told the press.
Hor Namhong said the two nations would
most certainly benefit from the single-visa
scheme as it would make travel between the
two countries more convenient.
As for concern that traffickers might exploit
the scheme, both countries have a “pre-clearance” system.
For instance, if a visitor applies for a visa at
a Thai embassy, the documents will be forwarded to its Cambodian counterpart for approval, which will have the authority to reject the application, and vice versa. Also, visa
fees for both countries will have to be paid.
For instance, the Thai embassy will charge

ist will have to pay the Cambodian visa fee
upon arrival in that country and vice versa.
As per details provided by the Thai Foreign
Ministry, neither country will issue a “multiple-entry” visa.
Up to 21 million people have visited Thailand
in 2012, while Cambodia has had 2.3 million
visitors in the first eight months of 2012.
Piyamarn Tejapaiboon, president of the Tourism Council of Thailand, said the scheme will
be slightly more beneficial for Cambodia, as
tourists visiting Thailand will be able to extend their stay.
26
JANUARY - APRIL, 2013
Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn, president of
the Association of Thai Travel Agents, added
that the scheme should help boost tourism in
Thailand because travel agents will now be
able to offer Cambodia as an additional destination.
Apart from the single visa, the two ministers
also discussed several cooperation strategies
at the meeting yesterday, including joint efforts in the security, economic, social and
cultural spheres. They also agreed to set up
a permanent border checkpoint between Ban
Nong Aian in Sa Kaew province and Stung
Bot in Cambodia’s Banteay Meanchey province, as well as a temporary checkpoint at
Sa Kaew’s Ban Non Mak Moon and Banteay
Meanchey’s Ban Pray Chan.
Thailand will also do a feasibility study on
upgrading a road linking the Stung Bot
checkpoint to Cambodia’s Highway No 5 to
Phnom Penh. The State Railway of Thailand
will also provide assistance in building a railway bridge connecting Sa Kaew’s Kongluek
village with Poi Pet in Cambodia to facilitate
trade and tourism.
So far, the two countries’ annual bilateral
trade is worth about US$2 billion (Bt61 billion), Hor Namhong said. “Both countries
have agreed to increase some 30 per cent of
trade annually, but I expect more,” he said.
