Story Ideas at Schlitterbahn
If there is one thing you’ve got at America’s favorite waterparks it’s plenty of
story angles. Here’s a quick rundown of everything from general story ideas,
to news in waterpark land.
It’s the Year of Anniversaries!
25 Years of Having a BLAST:
The future of waterparks shifted with an invention developed by Tom Lochtefeld in the early 1990’s at Schlitterbahn.
The idea was to create a thin sheet of water shooting out at a high enough pressure to create a surface people could
surf on -- inland. This concept was tested on a prototype built at our Schlitterbahn New Braunfels Waterpark in 1991 –
now known as the Boogie Bahn inland surf ride. Once the ride was tested and approved by audiences, this water
injection technology changed the face of waterparks and lead to the next great invention – uphill water coasters!
System wide celebrations are still in the planning stages, but will include: local celebrity riders on our iconic blasters in
every park, a simultaneous surfing record attempt, contests for first rider tickets, and a birthday party that will definitely
be a blast!
World’s Most Award Winning Uphill Water Coaster, The Master Blaster, turns 20:
The Schlitterbahn New Braunfels park is home to a guest favorite, the world famous Master Blaster. Built in 1996, this
2.5 minute ride is over 65 feet tall and sends guests on an exhilarating ride down two, 3 story drops. It is easily the most
iconic uphill water coaster in the world. The Master Blaster patented technology has been used on hundreds of rides
from Dubai to Disney.
Wave Rivers turn 20:
Lazy Rivers turned into Crazy Rivers with the Schlitterbahn invention of Torrent Wave Rivers. By sending a pulse of
water at regular intervals, Jeff Henry, one of Schlitterbahn’s owners and our “wizard of water”, created waves in rivers
that people flock to ride. Torrent Wave Rivers are now a feature in every Schlitterbahn Waterpark and in most modern
waterparks around the world.
15 year anniversary of the opening of the Schlitterbahn South Padre Island Waterpark:
Built in 2001, this 25-acre waterpark is nestled on one of the best beaches of Texas – South Padre Island. This park is
home to our Transportainment® River system that is designed to maximize time in the water and eliminate lines. This
river system connects eight attractions that feature rapids, chutes, and gentle currents.
10 year anniversary of the opening of the Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark:
Built in 2006, this 26-acre waterpark is located on historical Galveston Island and has been voted as the World’s Best
Indoor Waterpark for 8 straight years. This park features more than 33 attractions and a mile long Transportainment ®
River system. To celebrate its 10 year anniversary, Galveston will be unveiling a new ride, which will be the world’s
tallest water coaster.

Overall:
Sustainability
Schlitterbahn has a long history of sustainable building practices, utilizing a wide variety of materials (such as parts from
decommissioned ships), in the construction of its water parks. Two examples are our most recent resort build and our
latest ride:
Schlitterbahn South Padre Island Resort is one example of this philosophy of sustainable building. The resort is built on
the skeleton of a hotel property that was destroyed in Hurricane Dolly. Loblolly pines saved from the Bastrop wildfires
are used throughout the property, the first time recovered lumber from a wildfire has been used to construct a resort.
Nearly 3 miles of mooring rope and various life boats, paddles, and other material from the USS Pope (a Vietnam era
troop ship) were also used throughout.
The World’s Tallest Waterslide, Verrückt, has a tower built from the shells of old railroad tanker cars.
The Longest Float = Longest Days
Schlitterbahn Waterparks specialize in keeping guests in the water far longer than most waterparks – some of our rides
are 45 minutes long (and that’s from ride entry to ride end, not going in circles). Born in the heart of Texas’ sizzling
summers, long rides are the best formula for keeping guests cool all day long.
Unplug all the way
Even with waterproof cases, waterparks remain the last remaining oasis from the cell phone zombification of our nation.
Most people at waterparks are unplugging from social networks, from the internet, and from the world of the screen
and splashing into 3D real time with one another. Schlitterbahn has long realized that this break from technology is
exactly what most people need while on vacation – a real break from incessant connection. This may be why waterpark
time can be the most relaxing way to reconnect as a family – because even kids have to stop texting and start playing
with the person next to them.
Bring it!
Schlitterbahn Waterparks are sponsoring a mom’s recipe challenge this spring, inviting area mom’s around each park to
pack the perfect picnic lunch for the waterpark. Schlitterbahn Waterparks is one of few theme parks that allow guests to
bring in their own ice chests (sans alcohol and glass containers). And while there’s nothing wrong with a good chicken
salad, last year moms developed recipes that turned the ordinary to five-star amazing.
Summer Safety
Keeping kids safe in waterparks is as simple as Float, Splash, Slather and Supervise! Here are four tips from the experts
at Schlitterbahn:
Float - Floatation required! Schlitterbahn offers free life vests to every visitor. If your child doesn’t know how to swim
or lacks confidence in the water, put them in a life vest. Keep in mind teens and tweens who don’t know how to
swim will not always consider their safety when they are with their friends. A non-swimmer might not wear
their lifejacket when none of their friends wear one. If you have a non-swimming teen or tween, make sure they
have an adult with them who can help them make safe choices. Or better yet, sign them up for swimming
lessons early this summer!
Splash- Schlitterbahn offers great splash and play areas, so even the littlest ones can have fun without getting in water
any deeper than your ankles. Prepare by bringing water shoes and consider also wearing a life jacket, which can
double as mega sun protection.
Slather - Slather on the sunscreen and hydrate. Just because you are in the water doesn’t mean you can’t get burned
and dehydrated! Apply sunscreen every few hours and make sure everyone stops and has a drink often.
Supervise - No one knows your child’s behavior better than you! Whether you have a daring shark or a shy minnow,
For media inquiries: [email protected]
the best safety device for your child is your attention. Make sure you keep an eye on every child, particularly
weak swimmers.
Schlitterbahn State Tour:
New Braunfels:
Schlitterbahn New Braunfels was voted the World’s Best Waterpark in 2015! In 2016, the park will be holding
anniversary celebrations for both the Master Blaster (which turns 20) and the Boogie Bahn (which turns 25). The flagship
park will be hosting American Heroes Week during the week of Memorial Day. Members of the military, EMTs, and law
enforcement will be our guests in the park – for free!
Galveston:
Cabanas Rise
Schlitterbahn Galveston Island has created the industry’s first ever two story cabanas. Perfect for guests who want their
own oasis within the waterpark, cabanas are part of the trend of luxury leveling in the theme park industry. Last
season the two story cabanas – referred to as Penthouse Cabanas - regularly sold out, and the park plans on growing its
inventory to meet the demand.
Awards!
Indoor waterparks are usually relatively small, but in Galveston, Schlitterbahn’s massive river system and greenhouse
roofing structure keeps summer undercover all year round. Schlitterbahn Galveston Island was named the World’s Best
Indoor Waterpark in 2015.
South Padre:
Schlitterbahn’s “on the beach” Waterpark on South Padre Island is home of the Transportainment® River system, where
guests never have to leave their tubes to enjoy any of the rides (except for our inland surfing ride).Transportainment ®
was invented at Schlitterbahn South Padre!
Corpus Christi:
New Park, Same Philosophy
Corpus Christi is the site for the newest Schlitterbahn Waterpark and Resort. Currently under construction,
Schlitterbahn Corpus Christi will be the fifth park in the family-owned and operated Schlitterbahn family of parks. The
park is also using sustainable building practices including revamping an existing building on property as opposed to
tearing it down, utilizing reclaimed wood from the Bastrop wildfire, and repurposing old rides from other defunct theme
and water parks and turning them into new engaging adventures. The park celebrated a soft opening in 2015 and will
open fully in 2016.

Wave Rivers turn 20:
Lazy Rivers turned into Crazy Rivers with the Schlitterbahn invention of Torrent Rivers. By sending a pulse of water at

people flock to ride. Torrent Rivers are now a feature in every Schlitterbahn Waterpark and in most modern
waterparks around the world.
Four Adventures – One Waterpark
The Original Schlitterbahn: Home to the signature Schlitterbahn Castle, this section of the park uses springfed
water from the Comal River. Nestled beneath a beautiful canopy of trees, this section of the park has eight tube
chutes, seven kids’ play areas, a wave pool, and swim up bars with heated pools. On the wild side: the Down Hill Racer
and the Soda Straws. On the mild side: the Raging River and the Congo.
Surfenburg turns 25!: Named for the world’s first surfing wave invented 25 years ago, the Boogie Bahn, Surfenburg is
also home to the World’s first uphill water coaster, The Dragon’s Revenge - invented 22 years ago. Also in Surfenburg:
the Kristal River which circles Squirt’n Sliden, a giant kids’ play area.
Blastenhoff turns 20!: The most award-winning attraction in Schlitterbahn history, the Master Blaster, turns 20 in
2016. Using patented water injection technology, the Master Blaster starts at the top of a six story tower in Blastenhoff.
(Two other rides also take off from the same tower.) Surrounding the “Blast Tower” is the Torrent Wave River – also
invented 20 years ago - which combines an endless river with a wave pool for unlimited fun.
Tubenbach: Tubenbach features The Falls, the world’s longest tubing adventure. The Tubenbach area features several
no-wait attractions and beaches allowing park guests to enjoy the rides without standing in line. Also, several of the
Tubenbach attractions are interconnected through an innovative Transportainment® river system, which allows guests
to float their way throughout the Tubenbach area.
Overall, Schlitterbahn New Braunfels has four times the rides and attractions of any waterpark within 200 miles,
and twice the number of attractions of any waterpark within 500 miles. Our naturally landscaped park with hundredyear-old oak, cedar, and cypress trees creates a completely different experience from the typical “hard-scaped”
waterparks.
Green Schlitterbahn
Schlitterbahn’s commitment to the environment is long standing. From the way the original park was designed to flow
among trees, to the commitment to water conservation (98% of the water is recycled through filtration), to maintaining
recycling containers throughout the parks, Schlitterbahn believes in sustainability. The development team, which builds
our new parks and attractions at Schlitterbahn, constantly looks for ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Premium Cabanas
Schlitterbahn has expanded the number of available cabanas to include everything from BBQ palapas to super-sized
cabanas suitable for ten people to share. Luxury cabanas with mini-fridges and TVs were successfully launched summer
of 2015.

from home (no glass or alcohol please). There is no charge for tubes, life vests, or boogie boards.
Awards
The unique character of the park has led amusement park fans to vote Schlitterbahn New Braunfels the “World’s Best
Waterpark” eighteen years in a row. The park’s six-story Master Blaster® Uphill Water Coaster has been voted the
“World’s Best Waterpark Ride” repeatedly. The park also won the “World’s Best New Waterpark Ride” Award for
three years for; the Dragon’s Revenge Water Coaster (2008), the Congo River Expedition, a heavily themed jungle ride
(2009), and most recently The Falls, the world’s longest tubing adventure (2011).
History
Schlitterbahn, when loosely translated means “slippery road” in German, opened by the Henry family in 1979 with only
four water slides starting from a German-style tower. The tower was patterned after the Bergfried Guard Tower at
Solms Castle in Braunfels, Germany – home of the original settlers of New Braunfels. The Henry family added the
tower and the slides on a hill next to their resort, known back then as the Landa Resort. The family has continued to
innovate, creating new ways to have fun with water that are imitated throughout the industry.
