FROM THE...
CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
Greetings Fellow Chamber Investors,
Wow! One month has already passed since I became
your Chairman. Again, I must say what an honor it is to
be Chairman of the Board for the such an outstanding
Chamber.
Building a strong membership makes a successful
organization. We have several new members this month
thanks to the Chamber staff and current member’s
recruitment efforts. So, if you meet a new member at an
event or meeting, “welcome & thank” them for joining
the Chamber. Help them introduce their business to
others, or invite them to join a committee you may be
on. Most important, introduce yourself and company to
the new members.
MICHAEL DIVINE
As an existing member, you may want to invest in
Visiting Angels,
“upgrading” your membership to one of our Distinguished
levels, Chairman’s Council, President’s Council or Living Assistance Services
Director’s Council. These different levels may be catered
to specifically meet your interests in supporting the Chamber.
I hope you had the opportunity to attend the RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival. The
weather was fantastic, and the crowds were unbelievable throughout the day on Saturday.
The Balloon Glows on both Friday and Saturday evenings were spectacular. Through out
the day the skydivers and rocket launches provided some amazing entertainment as well.
Thanks to all of you who volunteered to assist the Chamber in producing this festival.
The General Membership Luncheon for October was extremely interesting. I felt very
privileged to be in the presence of Rear Admiral W. Mark Skinner and Command Master
Chief John Heck along with other officers from CVN 77, USS George H.W. Bush aircraft
carrier. While listening to the Rear Admiral and Master Chief, I couldn’t help but think, how
grateful and thankful we all should be to have such great men and women serving in all
branches or our Armed Services.
Looking ahead just a bit, I hope you can join us for the 48th Annual Christmas Boat
Lane Parade on December 12th. I know the committee is still looking for sponsors along
with goodie bag items for the boat captains. Also in December, once again, this year,
the Chamber will be hosting its annual Christmas Open House, which will also serve as our
unveiling for the work that has been done to the Chamber building and grounds since
Hurricane Ike came roaring through. Lastly, let’s not forget, Epicurean Evening will be here
before we know it, so you might plan on volunteering on the committee or being a sponsor
for the evening. Hope to see you around the Chamber and the community!
Sincerely
Michael Divine

SEPTEMBER 2009
CINDY HARRELD
W
hat an exciting couple of months
we have had, September was the
end of our Chamber’s fiscal year
and we ended it with a bang! Our 22nd
Annual Business EXPO on September 3rd was
a great success. Also, the Annual Chairman’s
Ball “Saturday Night Fever”, if you missed it,
you missed a great time. Thank you, Damon
Pampolina with PRP Entertainment, for
keeping us on the dance floor all night long.
What a work out and a fun time too!
Then came October and the 16th Annual
RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival presented by
the City of Nassau Bay. You may not know
that Ballunar Liftoff Festival, Inc. is a separate
organization from the Chamber with it’s own
501 (c)(3) tax-exempt status. The mission of
Ballunar Liftoff Festival is to “help the public
learn about aviation and space exploration,
and to sponsor and fund educational
activities that encourage young people to
learn about aviation and aeronautics by
studying mathematics and science.”
Over the past 16 years through grants
awarded by Ballunar Liftoff Festival, Inc. more
than 16,000 Title 1 School Children, Pre K and
K-12, have been given the opportunity to take
field trips to the Johnson Space Center and its
Official Museum, Space Center Houston. They
receive hands-on interactive experience
while sitting in the flight-deck of a space
shuttle, learning how to operate robots on
Mars from a Space Station and learning to live
in Space. Ballunar Liftoff Festival’s contribution
has also helped create classrooms where
children K-8 can learn about the science
and technology used in the space program.
This environment challenges children’s minds
while teaching them skills such as using
astronaut training programs, designing and
building programmed robotic rovers and
digitally docking the Shuttle with the ISS.
Our Chamber is contracted by Ballunar
Liftoff Festival, Inc. to produce the Festival
and we could not do it without the support of
the Johnson Space Center and the crew at
Space Center Houston.
Many of you have also participated in
the event each year as well by attending,
volunteering or serving on the grounds
committee – Thank you for your support of
the Festival. Additionally, Michael Divine with
Visiting Angels, Living Assistance Services and
our Chamber’s Chairman of the Board has
served as the Grounds Committee Chairman
for 2 years. Michael, I want to thank you for
your commitment to making the RE/MAX
Ballunar Liftoff Festival a success and thank
you for helping to keep me sane during the
Festival set up.
I’m so happy to announce that JSC Federal
Credit Union has upgraded their membership
to the “Directors Council” Distinguished
Investor level. Thank you to Michael Brown
and Jennifer Robinett for continuing your
support of our Chamber by helping us to
achieve our goals for the community. If
you want to learn more about becoming a
Distinguished Investor of our Chamber please
feel free to contact myself or Stephanie Rice,
our Director of Membership at 281/488-7676.
November reminds us of what we have to
be thankful for each year and I’m thankful for
this wonderful community. Our Clear Lake/
Bay Area Houston region continues to be
a shining star in our great State and I feel
privileged to work and live here.
Thank you again for the opportunity to
lead this Chamber by serving the community
it represents. I hope you and your family have
a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday!
With Warm Regards,
RE/MAX Ballunar
Liftoff Festival
Presented by the City of Nassau Bay
The crisp, cool weather arrived just in time to set the mood for great
festival atmosphere. The 16th annual RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival
presented by the City of Nassau Bay was held October 23-25.
This one-of-a-kind tribute to human flight, displayed
a beautiful hot air balloon ascension. The threeday family friendly event featured hot air balloon
competitions, illuminating evening balloon glows,
countless skydiving exhibitions, great music including
live entertainment by the U.S. Navy Mid-South Rock
Band Express, and various aviation equipment
displays.
As one of the largest navigational and maneuvering
competitions in the nation the festival showcased over
70 hot air balloons, flown by some of the world's most
experienced aerial navigators. Balloon pilots also competed
for a $5,000 cash prize during the Lockheed Martin Shuttle
Rendezvous.
On Saturday, October 24th, this year’s festival conducted a
NASA open house and a Salute to Law Enforcement exposition. Law
enforcement officials were on site greeting the public and Kemah Fire
Department received the most votes for the favorite fire truck.
The festival also featured many arts and crafts booths including
sand art and caricature drawings and concession booths featuring
the always popular kettle corn and turkey legs. A midway with rides
and games for children and adults also provided entertainment
throughout the weekend.
Thank you to all volunteers and sponsors for your time and dedication
to this commemoration of mankind's first form of flight.

Chamber YP's Walk All Over Heart Disease
C
ardiovascular disease is our nation's no. 1 killer.
In fact, seventy percent of Americans don't
get enough exercise, blaming lack of time and
motivation, this limited physical activity increase the risk
of heart disease and stroke. As our waistbands have
expanded, so have the number of preventable illnesses
and health care costs.
Are you ready to fight heart disease? According to a
study published in the New England Journal of Medicine,
you may gain two hours of life expectancy for each
hour of regular, vigorous exercise.
On October 17th, the Clear Lake Area
Chamber Young Professional participated in
the Start! Bay Area Heart Walk. The Heart
Walk took place early Saturday morning at
the Kemah Boardwalk.
"The great weather and awesome scenery
at the Boardwalk led to a great turn out, our
YP's were ready to go," said Young Professionals
Chairman Richard A. Simmons of Waldron &
Schneider, L.L.P.
The Chamber had 11 Young Professionals participate,
raising over $700.
