Perley Elementary School in Georgetown.
GEORGETOWN - In midSeptember when Perley School
parents in Georgetown met with
school officials at the annual
Parent Information Night, school
resource officer James Rodden had
a few words of advice for them.
He told them that if they cross
their children in the crosswalk
on North Street – again, in the
crosswalk, not just anywhere
along the street – then Ellie will
do just about anything in her
power to protect the kids.
Ellie said he’s right. "I would
do anything for the kids," said
the 68-year-old Ellen "Ellie"
Thornton. "My mother brought
me up that way. I just love the
kids. How could you not want to
protect them?"
For the past five years,
Thornton, a Georgetown resident,
has worked as the crossing guard
outside of the Perley Elementary
School. Whether you simply pass
her on the street or need her to help
stop traffic while you cross North
Street you’ll always get a "Hello,
dear" or a "Good Morning" from
her. That’s because she’s happy
doing what she’s doing.
"The kids make me happy so I
look forward to work," Thornton
said. "I feel like I just started
yesterday. I love the children."
And they love her back. While

IPSWICH - If you told John Ross
that one day he would be teaching
country line dancing, he probably
would not have believed you.
That’s because he got into teaching
dancing in a roundabout way, to say
the least.
Ross used to get together with
a bunch of his friends on Sunday
night’s at the Bertucci’s on Rte. 1.
They then would head to the movies
or to shoot pool. One night, at his
suggestion, they decided to go to
Ovations at the Holiday Inn next to
Bertucci’s to check out the country
line dancing. For the next three
weeks, Ross returned to watch the
dancing because he liked it so much.
There was one problem. "I was too

Silent Auction in Ipswich to
Combat Global Poverty
Comcast Launches New Video "Breast Cancer Hope"
Dear Editor,
Dear Editor,
In our quaint New England villages, it is sometimes difficult to imagine
what life is like for the extreme poor surviving on less than a dollar a day.
Most of us spend more than that on our morning coffee or newspaper
each day.
As an international non-profit based locally in Ipswich, Massachusetts,
Partners In Development, Inc. is reaching out to you, our neighbor, to
get involved with our efforts in Haiti and Guatemala. On November
3rd, we are hosting our 7th Annual Dinner Dance & Silent Auction in
Newburyport, Massachusetts. We invite you to attend the event or to
make a donation to our Silent Auction to help us transform lives! Last
year this event raised $44,350! All of which went to help the poorest of
the poor.
For the past 17 years, Partners In Development (PID) has been
serving the poorest of the poor in the developing world. Through child
sponsorships, small business loans, housing opportunities and medical
care we aim to transform communities so they can be self-sufficient.
We serve over 4,000 people each year in Haiti and Guatemala who are
determined to break the cycle of poverty for their families.
We encourage you to get involved with PID to help those born in an
impoverished country find a life with dignity and hope. By becoming
an active supporter, you can help the next generation be educated, give
parents the opportunity to open their own businesses with our loans,
move families from one-room shacks with dirt floors to a decent place
to call home, and ensure that communities are healthy so they can be
productive.
How can you get involved?
. Donate an item or service to our 7th Annual Silent Auction being
held on November 3rd
. Attend our Dinner Dance & Silent Auction on November 3rd
. Make a financial donation to Partners In Development
. Arrange for PID to set up a small informational display in your
place of work
. Sponsor a child or go on a work trip to Guatemala with your
co-workers, family, friends or civil/religious group
. Host a PID social and help us spread the word about our work
Please contact us today to let us know how you want to help! If it
were your family living in poverty, wouldn't you be hoping for a miracle?
You can make that miracle happen with PID. Call us at (978) 4179250 or email [email protected]. Donations can be sent to PID, P.O.
Box 9, Ipswich, MA 01938. To learn more about our work, please visit
our website at www.pidonline.org. PID is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and all
donations are tax-deductible.
To help raise awareness and provide important information about breast
cancer – a disease that about one in eight women will develop during their
lives – we are launching “Breast Cancer Hope”, a first-of-its-kind video-ondemand and online initiative bringing together educational and inspirational
content for all women and their loved ones.
Comcast is working with television network Lifetime, which is serving as
the sponsor of Breast Cancer Hope, as well as The Style Network, Discovery
Health Channel and Exercise TV and breastcancer.org, the leading online site
for medically reviewed and up-to-date information about breast cancer, to
present dozens of programs about detecting and living with breast cancer, as
well as discussion forums, health and fitness advice and relevant news clips.
Throughout October, Comcast customers with ON DEMAND service
will have access to more than 40 programs in five topical areas:
Fact or Fiction: Lifetime teamed up with breastcancer.org to create
exclusive content featuring medical interviews with doctors and other health
professionals that offer a patient’s perspective about what to expect from visits
to specialists like radiologists, breast surgeons, oncologist, plastic surgeons
and genetics counselors.
What’s My Risk: Discovery Health Channel programs about cancer
research, breast cancer prevention and the experiences of families affected
by the disease; healthy-cooking recipes from Comcast’s Digital Cookbook
series; mini workouts from Exercise TV; and breast-cancer-related episodes
from Comcast’s Seeking Solutions with Suzanne and It’s Your Call with Lynn
Doyle.
Inspiration: Segments from the Lifetime series Intimate Portraits featuring
profiles of Ann Curry, Betsey Johnson and Rosanna Arquette, as well as the
Emmy-nominated Lifetime original movie, “Why I wore Lipstick to My
Mastectomy”, starring Sarah Chalke (Scrubs); and motivational stories from
cancer survivors.
What is Breast Cancer: Programs following women from the diagnosis
stage through treatment and exploring plastic surgery and reconstruction
options.
Fashion Tips: Advice for patients and survivors, from demonstrations of
how to wear a scarf to makeover shows, including special segments from The
Style Network’s popular series, How Do I Look? And Who’s Wedding is it
Anyway?
We are also is making a wide range of breast cancer information available
online at www.comcast.net/breastcancer. At that site, visitors can view video
news reports, read and post to message boards about breast cancer and send
their questions to Dr. Marisa Weiss, the founder of breastcancer.org.
Our customers are currently using the ON DEMAND service more than
250 million times per month, and Comcast.net reaches more than 15 million
unique visitors per month. Both platforms will highlight the Breast Cancer
Hope initiative to help make consumers aware of the resources available to
them. We hope all of your readers take the time to visit these sites to learn
more.

a book that "is very well written

Author Zada Connaway says,
“If you have wondered why even
the most infamous incidents
involving churches where a
minister, pastor or priest who
perpetrate evil deeds disappear
from the news after once being
reported, this book will offer
some explanation.”
When a trusted pastor
betrays a family and church
administrators ignore a dad's
pleas for help, a book is born.
Innocence Betrayed - A Dad’s
Story of Clergy Misconduct
is a fictional story of a man's
ten-year quest to protect his
four daughters, psychologically
tortured after the minister
devastates the family unit.
Main character, Jim Sajek, has
many plates spinning as his pastor
manipulates and dissects his
family with calculated expertise,
separating husband and wife,
parents and children, sister and
sister. With his steadfast faith
in God, Jim wouldn’t give up,
determined to become a survivor
and not a victim.

Country Line Dancing Comes to Ipswich

Ipswich.
"It’s a vital part of my life," she
said.
Weinstein admits that she wasn’t
a big country music fan but she
said that country music now has a
crossover appeal and is more upbeat.
What really keeps her coming back
for the lessons is the teachers.
"Why I’ve continued is because of
the two of them. They are incredible.
They are sincere, wonderful people
who want to make you happy. I
would never stop. It’s not just the
dancing. It’s the welcoming attitude
they have. There’s no competition or
judgment," said Weinstein, adding
that they just want everyone to have
fun.
That’s why Ross said he’s always
enjoyed dancing – it’s fun. That,
and one other reason. "I’ve always
liked to dance, even when I was in
the military," Ross said. "I always
associated it with meeting women."
Editor’s note: Classes started on
Wednesday, Oct. 3 and will run
every Wednesday evening after that.
Location is the Ascension Memorial
Church, 31 County Road, in the
gym. All ages and abilities. Free step
sheets. The class runs from 7 p.m.

FURR BALL STORY
The Newburyport mother's clubs have been
collecting clean, new or gently used cribs, linens,
bottles, bassinets, blankets, swings, monitors,
highchairs, safety items, and clothing between
Friday, September 28 and Wednesday October
10.
Because of safety and sanitary reasons the club
is unable to accept any toys, changing tables,
jogger strollers, backpacks or bath seats, but that
is not stopping them from collecting hundreds
of items that are being distributed to local
families.
"My entire garage is filled with stuff," said

chicken to dance," said the Ipswich
resident who recently moved here
from Melrose.
On the third week a woman he
knew said, "come on out and she
showed me how to dance."
When Ross then showed his
buddies what he had learned, they
gave him the business. But Ross was
gaining confidence. Before he knew
it, he was giving lessons in Lynnfield.
As the class grew, he decided he
needed more space so he rented a
larger hall in Melrose where he has
now been for the last 12 years.
In early October, he and his wife,
Christine, brought their lessons to
Ipswich.
"We thought we would have 10
or 12 students the first night. We
thought that would be a great night,"
Ross said. "We had 26."
The number was slightly larger at
this week’s class.
If you guessed that Ross met his
wife on the dance floor, then you’re
correct. They were at a club called
Cowboys at the Palace in Saugus.
"I used to go there all the time. I
saw her and I asked her to dance,"
said Ross. They were married in
2000.
Now – in addition to their deejay
business – they are teaching the class
in Ipswich on Wednesday nights.
Here’s what their announcement,
in part, said: "High energy country
western line dance lessons coming
to Ipswich. All ages and abilities;
features the most upbeat country
music today." This announcement
has been running consistently in The
Town Common newspaper since
their arrival to Ipswich.
While country western music is
definitely featured in the class, Ross said
he and his wife play all kinds of music.
"It is line dancing to modern music
not just country music. We do that
to keep it interesting," he said.
Ross said he has probably taught
1,000 people in his classes. They walk
– or dance – through those doors for
a variety of reasons. His wife, for
example, was taking an aerobics class
with some of her friends and they
didn’t think they were getting enough
of a workout. She suggested they take
dancing lessons. They did.
"It’s for exercise, for fun and it’s
social," Ross said, who is the school
resource officer with the Melrose
Police Department. "We encourage
people to have fun. It’s supposed to
be fun."
One person who’s been having fun
is Sheryl Weinstein of Brighton. She
has been taking lessons with them
for the past 12 years in Melrose and
she’s come to both of the classes in
Page a bit stressful, particularly at
morning drop off time, Thornton
said the job doesn’t get to her
– and it shouldn’t.
"If I was nervous, I wouldn’t be
out in that street," she said. "I am
aware of the cars coming and I
know the risk, but I’m safe."
And, as she said, she’s focused
on the kids.
"The kids are adorable. They
are polite and they are well taken
care of," Thornton said. They are
so sweet."

rehabilitation of the town’s police
station. The capital grant will
respond directly to a statement of
need recently submitted by Police
Chief Michael Riley.
Funds from the grant will address a
number of needs in the 3,000 square
foot facility which serves as the base
of operations for Newbury’s 13
full-time police officers, 3 full-time
civilian dispatchers and 10 reserve
officers and dispatchers. Specific
projects include strengthening the
security of the building, modernizing
holding cells to meet current code
requirements and modifying the
station’s interior space to improve its
utility.
Stanley added, “This money may
be 15 years overdue, but it couldn’t
come at a better time for Newbury.”
Funding for the grant will come
from the proceeds of a 1992 bond
bill, which must be expended or
reauthorized by June 30, 2008.
Tarr and Stanley credited
the leadership of Chief Riley in
identifying and capitalizing on
this opportunity to improve his
department’s facility. Riley said, “This
grant award will allow the Newbury
Police Department to continue to
provide the citizens of Newbury with
excellent police services, but from a
healthier, safer and more productive
work environment.”
Newburyport reminds residents that
fall hours at the Compost Facility
are Tuesdays through Saturdays
from 7:30AM-2:30PM. Effective
Thursday, October 18, the facility will
have extended hours on Thursdays
and Saturdays until 5:30PM. These
extended hours on Thursdays and
through December 1, 2007.
Residents can access the Compost
Facility on Crow Lane to dispose
of yard waste, which is open from
April- through the first snow or
early December, Tuesday – Saturday,
7:30AM-2:30PM. Leaves, grass, yard
trimmings, brush, and tree limbs up
to 18" in diameter are accepted at
the facility. No wood, plastic bags or
plastic containers are allowed. Proof
of residency and $10.00 seasonal
sticker are required for use. Stickers
can be purchased at the compost
facility.
Curbside bagged leaf collection
will be offered during the weeks
of November 5th, and 26th, and
December 3rd.
Residents must
place leaves in brown, paper, leaf
bags or loose in designated marked
barrels. Bagged leaf collection will
take place on one’s regular trash day
during these four weeks. Bags must
be placed at curbside by 7:00AM and
contain only leaves. No branches,
tree limbs or rocks are permitted to
be mixed with the leaves.
State regulations prohibit the
co-mingling of solid waste and
yard waste which means residents
must segregate these two types of
household waste.
For information about bagged leaf
collection or the Compost Facility,
please contact Molly Ettenborough,
Recycling Coordinator, at 978-4990413 or via e-mail at mettenborough@

Gospel Choir in Newburyport
Performs “Rock My Soul”
or have never been, gospel creates
a sense of joy that reaches across
divides and brings us together.
That’s powerful stuff.”
Rock My Soul’s live performances
have never failed to bring
audiences to their feet. And the
uplifting, full-spirited singing by
this interfaith, nondenominational
group is also sure to make listeners
want to jump up and dance with
joy. “We’ve been so excited to
see how quickly Rock My Soul
has ‘taken off’ in northern New
England,” says Boyer. “And we’re
thrilled to bring our music to the
North Shore area by performing at
St. Paul’s. In only two years, we’ve
begun to see audiences of 200 to
300 people. That’s astounding,
and proves that there’s a real
hunger for this kind of music.
Knowing that we’re performing it
to help listeners feel connected to
something positive and joyful, to
teach them a bit about the origins
and meaning behind gospel music,
and to celebrate the strength of the
human spirit gives us all a sense
that we’re helping to make things
better, one song at a time.”
Featured soloists for the evening
will be Dawn Boyer, Deborah
Erickson-Irons, Brett Hartenbach,
Carolyn
Morse-Finn,
Mark
Weaver, and Jancie Yancy. The
Rock My Soul band, including
Eric Donnelly on keyboards and
Hammond B-3 organ, Brett
Hartenbach on guitar, Victor
Love on bass, and Mike Walsh on
drums, will accompany the choir.
Due to the group’s popularity,
advance ticket purchase is strongly
recommended. Advance tickets
for the concert are $12 general
admission / $10 seniors 65 and
older. Children 12 and under are
admitted free. All tickets at the door
are $15. Tickets may be purchased
online at www.gospelmusicproject.

NEWBURYPORT - Rock My
Soul, a nondenominational, 25member choir that specializes in
lively, roots-based gospel and rich
harmonies, will appear at St. Paul’s
Episcopal Church, 166 High Street
in Newburyport, MA on Saturday,
October 20. The concert begins
at 7 pm and will be followed by a
dessert reception. The group’s newly
released CD and tee shirts will also
be available for sale. Doors open at
6:30 pm.
As a recent review in The Wire
states, “Unless you’re from the South
or attend a church with a bangin’
choir, you’re not likely to hear bona
fide gospel tunes sung the way Rock
My Soul performs them.”
With its unique brand of rousing,
raise-the-rafters gospel music, Rock
My Soul has garnered an evergrowing following and performed
to packed houses throughout New
Hampshire, Massachusetts, and
Maine. Thanks to the guidance
of choir director Dawn Boyer,
arranger Eric Donnelly, and band
leader Brett Hartenbach, Rock
My Soul is as tight and polished
as any fine choral group, yet has
the immediacy and soulfulness of
the authentic gospel music that
it’s looking to revive. In October
2005, Rock My Soul shared the
stage with Boston's legendary
Silverleaf Gospel Singers, recipients

The scam works like this:
When you think you're going to
an investment education seminar
that includes a free lunch at a
nice place, you end up facing
high-pressure sales tactics and
misleading claims. You might be
pushed to open new accounts,
sign complicated documents
(without being given the
opportunity to read them or take
them to your attorney for review)
or buy investment products that
aren't suitable for you (or that
might not even exist).
Because we're seniors and the
topic is important to us, we're
promised high returns on our life
savings with safe investments and
excellent liquidity for a financially
secure retirement.
Here are two ways to educate
yourself against investment
fraud:
* Go to AARP (www.aarp.org)
and look at its online videos.
Search for investment fraud and

you're there, take the Investment
Fraud IQ test to see how you
score.
* Go to www.sec.gov and
search for "free lunch report"
for the whole 46-page study. It
includes examples of the ads that
are used in these scam free-lunch
investment seminars.
If you have questions, call
the SEC's Office of Investor
Education and Advocacy at 800SEC-0330.
Here's a scary thought:
Research shows that 78 percent
of us have received one of these
free-lunch invitations.

MOMENTS IN TIME
* On Oct. 18, 1922, "Robin Hood," starring Douglas Fairbanks,
opens at Grauman's Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, Calif. As a
publicity stunt two weeks before the premiere, Fairbanks had posed
atop a New York hotel in costume and shot arrows from the building,
accidentally injuring a man through an open window.
* On Oct. 19, 1939, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" debuts,
starring James Stewart. World War II interrupted Stewart's film career.
He became a bomber pilot and remained in the Air Force reserves for
decades, rising to the rank of brigadier general.
* On Oct. 20, 1944, two liquid gas tanks explode in Cleveland,
with flames shooting 2,500 feet in the air and leveling everything
within a half mile. The explosion destroyed two factories, 79 homes
in the surrounding area and more than 200 vehicles -- and killed 139
people.
* On Oct. 21, 1959, thousands of people line up in New York City
outside a bizarrely shaped white concrete building that resembled a
giant upside-down cupcake -- the Guggenheim Museum. Architect
Frank Lloyd Wright worked on the building for sixteen years, finally
seeing it open six months before his death.
* On Oct. 15, 1964, while trying to set a new 1 mile land-speed
record, Craig Breedlove loses control of the Spirit of America jetpowered car, which began to skid at an initial speed of more than 400
mph. Six miles later, Breedlove was the not-so-proud record-holder for
the longest skid marks ever recorded.
* On Oct. 16, 1976, "Disco Duck," a satiric send-up of the 1970s
disco craze by Memphis disk jockey Rick Dees, becomes a No. 1 hit.
* On Oct. 17, 1994, taxicab driver Jeremy Levine returns to
London, England, from a round-trip journey to Cape Town, South
Africa. Passengers Mark Aylett and Carlos Aresse paid 40,000 pounds,
or approximately $65,000, for the 21,691-mile trip, setting a world
record for the longest known taxicab ride.

DONATIONS NEEDED
The Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society is urgently
seeking food donations, both canned and dry. This is
the height of the kitten season, all our foster homes are
full and so is our shelter!
We are currently caring for almost 100 kittens and
about 60 adults. They eat a great deal of food each day.
We depend on your generosity and support by donating
food or monies for us to purchase food.
Just pick up an extra case of cat food the next time
you go to the grocery store and drop it off at the shelter.
Anything you can spare will be greatly appreciated. 9
Lives, Friskies, Wiskas, Fancy Feast our cats eat most
anything. You CAN make a difference!

Cyan Magenta Yellow Black
With the 2008 presidential
elections looming, how health
care is delivered and paid for is
on the front burner. Although I
believe there is no simple answer
to solve the dilemma, change is
inevitable.¬¬
There is a new book out
that exposes how insurance
companies and the government
covertly ration health care
and are destroying the doctor/
patient relationship. Rich
Fogoros, MD, a cardiologist,
has written a book titled "
Fixing American Healthcare".
The book exposes how managed
care (managed costs) covertly
rations health care to control
costs and plans to destroy the
doctor/patient relationship to
do the same.
Regardless
of
how
knowledgeable you think you
are about managed care, the
book will enlighten you, disturb
you and give you hope.
I encourage you to buy the
Reading "Fixing American
Healthcare" is like reading
a murder mystery (how the
doctor-patient relationship has
been killed), a philosophical
treatise, an investigative report,
and an expose of agendas. Dr.
Fogoros reasserts the primacy of
the doctor-patient relationship
by proposing a balanced
solution to the healthcare crisis
that addresses the needs of
society, physicians, patients,
business, and government. If
this were possible, it would be
quite an accomplishment.
What about dentistry? If
you prefer health-centered/
relationship-based care, Dr.
Fogoros’ plan would maintain
that. However, I see less chance
for change in dentistry than
in medicine. Dental insurance
benefits have basically not
changed in 40 years! Many
patients who have dental
insurance have a $750-$1000
yearly maximum. That was
good for 40 years ago. What
if you need three crowns done
today?
I feel that dental insurance is
a rebate in today’s terms. For
those that need relatively little
care outside of routine cleanings,
most of the yearly premiums go
to the insurance company and
not to the benefit of the patient.
If you have a crown done at
$1000, the co-payment for the
patient might be $500. What if
you need 3 crowns and you only
have $750 per year of insurance
and already used $200 of it up
on routine cleanings? That’s not
insurance, it’s a rebate. What if
your medical insurance made
you pay half for the medical
treatment you receive?
The problem I see with
dental insurance changing is
that there are too many people
with existing dental needs. For
the yearly benefits to be higher,
the premiums would need to
be significantly higher…….
or the insurance executives
need to make less! Raising
the premiums would then be
prohibitive for many employers
which would mean less people
with coverage.
Dental insurance, the way
it is now, is here to stay. The
best approach for your own
dentistry is regular maintenance,
regardless if you have insurance.
I am still worried about the
doctor/patient relationship in
medicine.

a private dental practice in
Rowley dedicated to healthcentered family dentistry. If

NOSTALGIA NIGHT
Many people will remember the good
times listening and dancing to swing
tunes and ballads at the Sportman’s
Lodge on Plum Island Turnpike. Jack
Hackett’s in Salisbury used to offer
a weekly jazz jam session for local
musicians that was casual, fun, and
great music. Now, Bob Allison from
Newburyport and Lou Masiello from
Salisbury are trying to recapture the
spirit of these venues by offering a
weekly Nostalgia Night featuring the
Lighthouse Trio at Hobo’s Café and
Lounge in Salisbury Beach.
Every Wednesday from 7 to 9 PM
the trio of piano (Bob), bass (George
Blodgett from Hampton) and drums
(Lou) offer up classic tunes from the 30’s,
40’s, and 50’s giving people a chance to
sing, dance, or just relax to yesterday’s
hits. They have a long play list and
accept requests from the audience. Each
week a soloist horn player or singer is
also featured and local talent is welcome
at the casual open mike. Blues man
Malcolm Carnwath frequently stops by
and provides a change of pace with
his funky piano blues. Food, drinks,
conversation, dance music with style
add up to a great mid-week break at
Salisbury Beach. Stop by Hobo’s Café
and Lounge on Broadway and check it
out. For more info call Bob Allison at

Say What?
By Greg Zyla
Rusty Jarrett/Getty Images for NASCAR
Future Joe Gibbs Racing and Toyota driver Kyle Busch leads a pack of
cars during testing at Talladega Superspeedway recently.
the sport. At the same time I want to say
how much we appreciate GM. They've
been a great partner for us, and we've
been a great partner for them as well."
Translation: Toyota offered us a better
deal.
"I know GM has three other really
strong teams there. They're going to be
competitive year in and year out. We
know that. And I think the goal for us,
from JGR's standpoint, is what's best
for our families, our partners and our
fans."
Translation: We don't particularly
care about the other Chevy teams, and I
hope we don't lose too many fans.
Jimmy Makar (Joe Gibbs Racing senior
vice president of racing operations)
"Really, the biggest ... obstacle is
going to be the engine department ... the
engine's going to be a big deal for us.
Translation: I'm not worried about
the engine department. We'll get it all
worked out and make good horsepower
with Toyota behind us.
THE VOLVO
SAVE
Jim Aust (president and CEO of
Toyota Racing Development, USA)
"Certainly the first year that we've had
in this sport has been an exciting one.
We're learning a lot. And we certainly
look forward to our opportunity as
we get into this particular era with Joe
Gibbs Racing."
Translation: Our first year in Cup
racing to this point has been lousy. We
made a big mistake not signing a team
like Gibbs to begin with.
Denny Hamlin, driver of the Fed Ex
No. 11
"I feel like Toyota is really going to be
winners. We just need a little time to get
it all together.
Translation: We'll run up front right
away.
Tony Stewart, driver of the Home
Depot No. 20:
"As far as my USAC and World of
Outlaw teams (are concerned), we're
still going forward with Chevrolet (as
sponsor). We made it work when I had
MOPAR and I was driving for Chevrolet
on the Cup side. We can make it work
again.
Translation: If we can win with
MOPAR under the hood, we can win
with Toyota, too. I'll honor my contracts
and be faithful, but when renewal time
is up, I don't care what motor is in my
USAC car as long as we can win and the
sponsoring company treats us right.
"Society is in a constant state of
change. This is not like any other
professional sport. Things are constantly
in a state of change."
Translation: None needed.
1961 Pontiac
Catalina
By Greg Zyla
Q: Greg, the coolest car I ever owned
was a 1961 Pontiac Catalina two-door
hardtop that I bought new. I want to get
another '61 Catalina in good (probably
No. 2) condition for restoration. The
one I owned had the biggest engine
coupled to an automatic transmission.
I think GM billed it as "the lowest
weight per horsepower automatic in
production." What should I expect to
pay for this car, and how do I go about
finding one? -- Jim H., Laclede, Idaho
A: Glad to help, Jim. First, expect to
pay about $8,400 for a two-door sedan
(that's the one with the lip on the rear
of the top) or $11,350 for the bubbletop two-door sport hardtop (the one
you owned).
The engine can up the price
substantially, as the 389 V-8 with a 3-by2 Tri-Power setup will add 20 percent to
the cost in the 318 horsepower version
and 35 percent in the 348 horsepower
guise. There are several four-barrel 389s
that also increase the value.
If you can find a four speed, add up
to 10 percent. These prices are based
on a No. 2 condition Catalina, which
means it is in very good to excellent
shape, but not a frame-off show car.
The first price I gave is for a '61

The big news recently in Nextel Cup
is Joe Gibbs Racing's move to Toyota for
2008. Here are some quotes from the
actual press announcement, followed by
our translation of the comment.
J.D. Gibbs (president, Joe Gibbs
Racing)
"I kind of hate the way this played
out over the past few weeks. I know it's
frustrating from the media standpoint.
It's frustrating from our guys' standpoint,
frustrating really from GM's standpoint
and all of our key guys here."
Translation: Everyone and their
grandmother knew we were signing
with Toyota for 2008.
"I think for the leadership here, it
was a hard, long, difficult process going
through and making the decision."
Translation: Toyota offered us a better
deal.
"We think it's the right decision.
We think we have a shared vision with
Toyota on what our future needs to look
like and what their future looks like in
