NGCOA Canada
Introducing
Get Golf Ready
in 5 Days
NGCOA Canada and the Canadian
PGA Launch Get Golf Ready in 5 Days
The NGCOA Canada and the Canadian
PGA are bringing Get Golf Ready in 5
Days to Canadian golf courses in
2010. Get Golf Ready in 5 Days is a
fun, fast and affordable adult player
development program that was
launched in the United States by the
World Golf Foundation and the PGA of
America in 2009.
Over 1100 courses participated
with an average of 25 new golfers
per course, and with a little added
creativity some courses achieved
participation rates of between 200–700
golfers. Its success propelled the
NGCOA Canada and the Canadian
PGA to bring the program to their
members.
“I am pleased to announce that
the Canadian PGA will partner with
the NGCOA Canada in delivering Get
Golf Ready in 5 Days in Canada. This
program provides opportunities for
adult beginners who are critical to the
success of growing the game.
Canadian PGA members play a very
instrumental role in the success of
golf facilities and it makes perfect
sense that the Canadian PGA would
collaborate with the NGCOA Canada
on this very important initiative,”
stated Lindon Garron, President,
Canadian PGA.
The program is turnkey making
it easy to implement at any course
and will be offered free of charge
to NGCOA Canada and Canadian
PGA member courses. A carefully
designed curriculum and marketing
toolkit make it easy for courses to
offer the program at their facilities. A
website complete with search engine
capabilities will help consumers find
participating golf courses. The
curriculum is simple:
56
Survey results from participating
facilities indicated that 91% of the
participating facilities are likely to
continue with the program because;
•
•
•
•
•
it generates new business
it is easy to implement
it is a nationally branded program
it has a strong curriculum
the marketing toolkit is effective
and easy to use
• the program is affordable
A significant factor to growing golf
is player retention and 89% of the
participating golfers said they are
likely to continue playing golf with
76% having played golf one or more
times since the completion of the
program.
“This survey data is key to a
successful launch of the program in
Canada and we are grateful to have
the World Golf Foundation supporting our efforts”, stated Jeff
Calderwood, CEO, NGCOA Canada.
“We look forward to working with
the Canadian PGA and their members across the country as we work
together to grow the game of golf in
Canada.”
Get Golf Ready in 5 Days is crucial to growing golf in Canada, so make
sure you’re a part of it! Staff members
from the NGCOA Canada and
Canadian PGA will be contacting your
course in the coming weeks to solicit
your participation in the program.

raises funds for the Mike Weir Foundation and
the Children’s Miracle Network, both of which
are dedicated to advancing children’s healthcare across Canada. In addition to this donation, over $30,000 was donated by NGCOA

Today’s youth have far more extracurricular
options than generations before them, and
while the golf industry continues to encourage junior development programs, golf was
noticeably absent from a list of the nation’s
top 10 organized youth sports, according to a
2008 study by Canadian Social Trends.
But Whistle Bear Golf Club in Cambridge,
ON, has decided not to stand idly by and risk
losing a generation of young players. To
encourage this younger demographic,
Whistle Bear started the Junior Performance
Team in 2007 as a complement to its Golf
Performance Center, which is geared to
golfers of all levels and ages. The Junior
Performance Team specifically focuses on
instruction and fostering a love of the game
for 12 young players at a time, boys and girls,
ages 5 to 14.
Although most members come to the elite
level team with a strong foundation in golf,
instructors look for qualities that transcend the
sport when selecting team members.
“Regardless of their skill level, the most
important thing is that they have a desire to
be better at golf,” says Dave Smallwood,
CPGA Director of Instruction. “But we also
consider criteria outside of their actual skill
level such as their personality and willingness
to be instructed.”
“We cater to junior golfers,” says
Smallwood. “So they enjoy the game, the
camaraderie and they enjoy our instruction.
At the same time, they are also becoming
stronger players who will continue to play,
hopefully for the rest of their lives.”
