HALT AT X
Banishing the Winter Blues
During this time of year, when my nose won’t stop
running, my eyes just keep on tearing, I can’t feel either fingers
or toes, and my blush stays in the drawer because my cheeks are
perpetually pink, I keep reminding myself that spring must be
right around the corner. OK – maybe it’s a really long way to
the corner, but I know it’s there and coming sooner or later!
Thinking about the year ahead helps pass away the coldest
winter days when just the idea of getting on my horse makes me
shiver.
For VADA/Nova, 2009 promises to be a year full of
exciting activities, as well as some daunting challenges. In this
economic climate, horses and all horse-related activities are
becoming more and more of a luxury to many. And when the
choice comes down to enough spare funds to pay the farrier or
enter a show, it is not hard to guess what the answer will be. I
fear that we may see show entries down and people economizing in ways that will have repercussions that we haven’t even
thought of. The good news is that, as an organization, we are on
firm financial footing. After making a number of capital investments in the last few years, most notably all new board rings, as
well as a trailer on which to store them, we don’t anticipate the
need for any big ticket purchases this year. And, we have been
mindful of travel costs when hiring our judges and other show
officials. Our commitment to our members is to offer you the
same quality events as ever, while paying even more attention to
the bottom line.
And, on the subject of quality events, we have our
usual full slate of schooling and licensed shows on the schedule.
We start out the year with a schooling show at Morven Park in
March (more details inside) which is a great way to get your
horse ready for the upcoming season. Please note that, due to a
scheduling mix-up by Morven, this show is Sunday, March 22
(and not the 21st as stated in the Greenbook.) As always, our
first licensed show is in April, and as always, we need volun-

teers to make all our events happen. New this year – Donna
Gatchell will be coordinating volunteers for both schooling
and licensed shows, so please contact Donna early and often!
Also new this year, our breed show is on a weekend in June
rather than during the week as in years past, so if you haven’t
had a chance to participate before, as either a spectator,
volunteer or exhibitor, please put this on your calendar – it is a
very different event than our usual performance shows and
very fun and interesting.
On the education front – a few events to note. We
are presenting 2 evening sessions, the first in February with
Dr. Byron Young on emergency equine medicine, and the
second in March on equine nutrition, with Dan Shively of
Nutrena feed The sessions will be on Thursday evenings in
Leesburg and are FREE to our 2009 members. See the flyer
inside for all the details. The Musical Freestyle Clinic with
Cynthia Collins that we had to postpone this year when
Cynthia broke her leg just weeks before the event has been
rescheduled for November 7 & 8 – more details to follow.
And, on April 4 & 5th, VADA (our parent GMO) is hosting an
auditor-friendly clinic with Anne Gribbons at Morven Park.
As members of VADA/Nova, you are automatically a member
of VADA and that entitles you to ride in or audit that clinic at
a very reasonable rate. More details will be forthcoming on
VADA’s website - www.virginiadressage.org
So – keep warm, take out your calendars and start
filling in all of these upcoming dates and I
promise you, before you know it, we’ll all be
complaining about the heat!

PRELIMINARY SUMMARY MINUTES
VADA/Nova Board Meeting Jan. 12, 2009
Morven Park Classroom – 7:30 PM
The meeting was called to order at 7:33 PM and lasted until
9:55 PM. Seventeen of the nineteen members were present.
Two were excused – one participated on speaker phone for part
of the meeting.
President’s Report: A special welcome was given the three
new members of the Board. All were asked to sign the affirmation of the Conflict of Interest Policy by the February meeting. This is important relative to our application for 501C3
status. We had a good 2008 with regard to membership growth
and a strong treasury, and look forward to an active new year.
However, there is concern about 2009 because of the economic
situation. We need to think about economizing when we can
do so without harming the quality of our activities.
Treasurer’s Report: The current balance of the main account
is $47,639.45 and that of the other account is $8,825.35 for a
total of $56,484.80, which is not bad for this time of year. The
fees affecting our accounts will be reviewed with the bank.
Banquet: While we reviewed the Banquet Schedule, Jessie
Ginsburg – who will be MC – joined us by speaker phone. As
of January 12, 132 people have signed up for the Banquet.
There are lots of books for the book sale to benefit the “plug
project” for Morven Park. It will be conducted on the honor
system. The current retail value of items collected for the Silent Auction is $9,000.00. There are plenty of people ready to
work on the silent auction.
Old Business: Our application for 501C3 status is in “almost
done” shape. We hope to deliver the completed application to
our lawyers on Thursday and that they can mail it on Friday.
There will be a filing fee, but we do not know how much it will
be as it is based on our assets. Our Directors and Officers
policy has been renewed.
Plug Project for Morven Park: We have collected about
$2500.00 so far, and the first checks have been given to
Morven Park. More will be given after the Banquet. Then we
will work with them to get prices on plugs for A and D barns,
and we will look into getting started early. We will work on a
letter to bring this project to the attention of major competitors
who are not members of VADA/Nova.
VADA Chapter Volunteer: Barb Pickering was selected for
this recognition.
VADA Representatives: Sheli is completing a two year term.
We selected Jessie to serve a two year term and Stephanie
Floros and Jill Ramsburg volunteered to share the third slot.
These representatives attend VADA meetings on behalf of
VADA/Nova.
Survey: The membership survey which has been prepared will
now be “piloted” through the Adult Riders’ Committee. Once
that process is complete, it will be sent to the 2009 membership
via e-mail (Zoomerang) or regular mail (for those who do not
use e-mail).
Public Relations: All of our show dates have been provided
for publication in Virginia Equestrian, Virginia Horse Journal,
and Horse Talk.
Greenbook: The Greenbook was mailed January 12 and
should arrive by January 16.
Membership: As of January 12, we have 253 members. This
is lower than this time last year, but the membership campaign
began later this year. $1,095 has been received in Volunteer
Bucks and $9745 in cash.
Clinics/Education: The Musical Freestyle Clinic will be a
year from when it was originally scheduled – November 7 and
8, 2009. We anticipate a good turnout. We agreed that first
dibs on slots go to the riders who signed up to participate in
2008.
The committee presented ideas for two low cost evening
sessions – one February 19 with a snow date of February 26
and the second on March 5, with a snow date of March 12.
These will be at the Best Western in Leesburg from 7:30 PM to
9 PM. The first will be on Emergency Equine Care and the
second on Equine Nutrition. They will be free to our
members.
Membership Outreach: The Member of the Month articles in
P&P will continue. A reminder letter will be sent to those who
have not yet renewed.
Adult Riders Committee (ARC): The “clinic as fund
raiser” is tentatively scheduled for March 28 or 29. The
clinician’s time and the location are donated. The focus is
“getting your horse off the farm” and it will cost $60.00. There
can be eight participants – first come, first served. The plans
for a Tack Sale are moving forward.
Schooling Shows: Morven Park gave us a date of March 21,
but withdrew that date. They can give us March 22; the judge
is available on March 22 so we agreed to go forward with that
date. The new Schooling Show management teams will be
gathered in February to go over things essential to their roles.
The Board approved the expenditure of $100.00 to pay for the
meal which will be served then.
The next meeting is February 9, 2009 at 7:30 PM.
Respectfully submitted.

Originally from Northeast Ohio,
Trisha De Rosa moved with her husband and
daughter to Maryland 16 years ago. Trish started
riding as a young adult in the Hunter/Jumpers, then participated
in hunter paces and then evented to Training level. She found
dressage through the eventing and has made it her focus for the
past 10 years.
Trish's enthusiasm for dressage is inspiring. A director
of Human Resources at Orbital in Dulles, Trish has a daily 3
hour commute from her home in Frederick, Maryland. But on
her way home she finds time to stop and work her horses. She
shows her three year old Oldenburg mare, Rhosalina, whom
she purchased in utero, at the breed shows and in 2008 won the
VADA/Nova Young Horse award. The young mare will be
broke to saddle this Spring and Trish looks forward to starting
Trisha and Rhosalina (as a yearling)
their under saddle show career together as she ends her
partnership with CFS Wolf, a 15 year old Appaloosa gelding
Trish has owned since a foal and trained up to Prix Saint George. Trish is transitioning Wolf to a new owner so she
schools the pair as well as riding other clients horses.
Trish completed the L judges program 4 years ago and judges frequently at shows in Maryland, Virginia,
Pennsylvania and Delaware. She is also the United States Dressage Federation Region 1 competitor counselor
representative. And somehow, Trish finds the time to pursue her MBA and a Masters in Information Technology at
the University of Maryland!
An avid volunteer, Trish has joyfully filled every volunteer position but she especially enjoys scribing.

ARC Clinic Fundraiser
Springtime Clinic with Candy Allen
Sunday March 29, 2009
Jocelyn Pearson’s Farm
19996 Evergreen Mill Rd, Leesburg
This is the first of what we hope will be a successful series of “Clinic Fundraisers” sponsored by
VADA/Nova’s Adult Rider Committee. “Clinic Fundraisers” are made possible through the
generosity and enthusiasm of VADA/Nova Instructors who VOLUNTEER their professional
services, and by the Facility Owners who DONATE the use of their arenas! Profit from these
fundraisers clinics will directly support ARC education and training events.
Spring really IS around the corner, so we invite you and your horse to get off the farm and kick off your
2009 riding season by participating in a clinic with noted local trainer Candy Allen, in a friendly
atmosphere, at Jocelyn Pearson’s lovely farm, which has both indoor and outdoor arenas. Candy will
tailor each session to the individual rider’s goals, such as: a fix-a-test focus, addressing a particular
training issue, or working through “first time out” jitters of horse and/or rider. Auditors are welcomed.
No auditor registration or fee required, although donations are gratefully accepted! Folding chairs are
recommended.
Candy Allen has been a full time instructor for 15 years. She is
a USDF Certified Instructor through 4th Level and a USDF
Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medalist and has earned her Silver
Freestyle Bars. Though not current, Candy has been previously
certified by the American Rider Instructor Certification Program
and Centered Riding. She currently competes her own two
horses at the FEI Levels. Her students range from Into Level to
Prix St. Georges.

Is the weather getting you down?
Can’t ride and don’t know how to occupy yourself?
Then why not sit down in front of the fire with your Greenbook and
start to make plans for your show season??
It’s not too early….Why before you know it the weather will turn
warm and you’ll be all enthusiastic and ready to go.
We’d like you to familiarize yourself with the Year End Awards program so that
you’re not rushing around at the last minute, trying to meet all the requirements.
Begin by looking at pages 26-42 to see what awards you may qualify for.
Print out the appropriate forms such as the cover sheet, show report forms,
special award forms.
Make copies of the entry forms that came with your Greenbook.
Put all this in a folder so that you have everything within reach.
Please make note of a few things
1. For schooling shows, the judge must be an L Graduate or higher. If you intend to submit
scores from shows other than VADA/Nova for year end awards, make sure you check the
judge’s rating.
2. There will be Intro level classes offered at VADA/Nova’s September and November
Licensed shows. These may be used as VADA/Nova scores for Schooling show
year end awards.
If you are uncertain about any part of the year end awards program, ask now.
Don’t wait until the last minute.
We’re more than happy to answer any questions you might have.

COMING BACK AGAIN
by Marguerite Teska
Faith Q and Marguerite
Returning to riding after a serious accident or
illness is not easy for everyone. There’s a reason for the
ageless advice to get right back on the horse! For some,
riding is such a passion there is never a question about
returning, but for others there is a question, usually
beginning with a question about fear — though sometimes not the rider’s fear. It may be the apprehension of a
spouse, children, or parents.
STEP 1: Overcome fear.
The first step, and for many the hardest is overcoming fear. For me this meant spending several months
riding two true and tried “bombproof” lesson horses. I
also decided to limit my riding to working on the flat
(mainly because of some unrepaired knee damage).
STEP 2: Pain is bad.
Just like a poor fitting saddle, if you’re thinking
about pain in your ankle (hip, shoulder, neck, back, or
other body part) it won’t be good — and likewise, it’s not
good if the horse is thinking about a pain in his neck
(hoof, mouth, shoulder, back, or other body part). So do
your best to get rid of pain! For me this meant (1) doing
exercises and stretches to get my ankle more mobile and
(2) investing in some of those expensive flexible multijointed stirrups.
STEP 3: Work on the basics.
Take your time. Increase the amount and type of
your riding slowly. For me this meant spending the first
month walking, the second trotting and the third cantering. Things may come back quickly or slowly. Don’t
push yourself too far too fast. But then too, don’t stay at a
particular comfort zone for too long. Be sure you
continue to move forward. Also, get the advice of an
understanding riding instructor. It is an excellent time to
learn some new good habits, plus it will keep you from
favoring your injuries, getting crooked, unbalancing your
horse and practicing those old bad habits. It is a great
time for change!
STEP 4: Challenge yourself.
When you are ready, move on. For me this meant
leasing Faith Q (see photo). Faith is a friendly talented
well tempered 10 year old chestnut Hanoverian (with
quite nice blood lines). We spent a few months getting to
know each other. Faith was rather stiff, and her cribbing
made the muscles under her jaw quite strong, plus I was
rather lopsided from my ankle surgeries.
When we could walk, trot, canter, do a bit of
shoulder in and leg yield, I decided it was time to finally
spend my VADA/Nova scholarship! I contacted Mary
Flood at Wildfire Farm in Lovettsville, VA
(www.wildfirefarm.com). Mary is an excellent instructor,
trainer and rider, with a real talent for identifying problem
areas, deciding which needs work first, and suggesting
multiple ways to make the necessary changes.
When Mary Flood saw us, she said we were at the
point where most riders are when they first come to her.
Yes! It’s sometimes nice to be normal! The primary
thing Mary said we needed to learn next was: “Bend the
horse.” Okay, that didn’t sound too difficult. Right?
Mary also pointed out my bad habit of letting my
outside hand float up and away when I bend my horse.
Well, if you’re “normal” like me, don’t do it! Give the
horse room to step over by taking the him in that direction
of your weight aids and allowing with your outside leg
while closing your inside leg, but hold your outside hand
low and steady. You can move it forward, but not up into
the air, or off to the side. And don’t just bend the horse’s
neck, bend the whole horse. Use your inside leg (and
your whip) to get your horse to step over into that outside
rein. When you feel the horse truly move over, the jaw
will yield, and you can give generously with the inside
rein. Sound too complex? It gets easier!
Faith and I have been working faithfully on
bending. It has definitely encouraged her to lower her
head and move forward onto the bit. And, now when I
touch her with my right leg, she moves to the left and
with the left leg, to the right. Wow!
Faith now also stretches to reach her apple slices
and carrot chunks (cut into many small pieces, so we get
lots of practice). I hold them near her girth and shoulder,
encouraging her to bend and really stretch. It didn’t take
her long to figured out she wouldn’t get any unless she
bends around, although she did try backing up at first!
Also, over the last month, I’ve noticed that Faith’s mane,
which had been completely on the left, now has a break
near the center and the top part is beginning to flip to the
right. So maybe we are doing something right!
STEP 5: Repeat steps 3 and 4.
