Acapulco, Mexico
Acapulco, Mexico
Acapulco is considered the
country’s 16th largest
metropolitan area and one of
the most important destinations
since its golden days in the
1950s. Glamorous, spontaneous
and splashy, Acapulco is a city
that invites superlatives.
Located in the State of
Guerrero, Acapulco can be
described as an important
deep sea and coastal traffic
port located on the Pacific
Ocean on the western side of
the natural Bay of Acapulco.
Known as the queen of Mexican
beach resorts, this charming bay
is ever popular with year-round,
foreign and domestic visitors.
Acapulco is a privileged tourist
destination, with its two
magnificent bays: Santa Lucia,
known as Bahia de Acapulco
(Acapulco Bay), and Puerto
Marques, boasting incredible
natural beauty and cliffs. The
bays are surrounded by golden
sandy beaches and exotic
tropical vegetation and
embraced by the Sierra Madre
del Sur Mountain Range to the
east.The area also appeals to
families, due to the variety of its
several parks, calm beaches,
and the CiCi water sports park
for children. Sports enthusiasts
also have plenty to do. Water
sports of every variety lure
visitors to the seashore, while
golfers are beginning to
recognize Acapulco as a world
class destination. For early
risers, there are several new
eco-based tours that take in
the area’s lagoons, jungles,
islands, and estuaries. This is a
must destination stop if you are
ever on the Pacific side of our
neighbor to the south. And
you’re virtually guaranteed a
sunny day.
Cool Facts about Acapulco
• Boasts sunshine 360 days a year
• Biggest resort in Mexico

The ever reflective Mr. Bryant posing
Mr. Bryant is leading a community action project
with his 5th and 6th graders. Check that; perhaps it
would be more accurate to say that the 5th and 6th
graders are leading Mr. Bryant on a journey that helps
people reduce the amount of trash they create and
starts increasing the amount of recycling they do. It’s
all part of Mr. Bryant’s master plan of student
empowerment. How does it work? Well, back in the
day, teachers would give students assignments of
which they would follow. Those days are over; at least
for Mr. B’s classes. Nowadays there is a heavy push for
student driven projects. In other words, the students
decide what is worthy of a project and what needs to
be improved. This initial step is done by taking a
survey. Once, the boys create a survey and check the
results to see which issue is the most important to
them; they then go about the process of constructing
a project. The project involves collaboration and
problem solving. They identify a problem, research it
by performing their own experiments, brainstorm for
solutions then put their plan into action. So, they
chose Recycling at Hillside as an issue that needs to
be addressed. Mr. Bryant’s class determined that we
are not as efficient as we could be in terms of the 3
R’s and has proposed a plan to make us more
environmentally friendly. Not a bad job for a half-aterm’s work for some ambitious 10 and 11 year olds.

Mr. Math: Mr. McCarthy
Mr. McCarthy crunching some numbers?
Tim McCarthy is a man of few
words. He heads the Math
Department here at the Hillside
School. You know, Math;
numbers, straight forward, and
to the point. That is Tim
McCarthy in a nutshell.
Mr. McCarthy comes from
Cazenovia, New York.
Cazenovia is relatively close to
the Canadian border and the
Great Lakes. There, young
Timothy grew up playing sports;
especially winter ones. This is
where he honed his hockey
skills. He comes from a family of
pediatric doctors and military
people. Is it any wonder he is no
nonsense and straight to the
point? Yet, beneath that serious
exterior belies a dry wit and easy
going manner. He can crack a
joke without changing his
expression and you think to
yourself: Was he serious?
Mr. McCarthy is in his 10th year
at Hillside. The story of how he
came here is almost legendary.
Like an aspiring actor who sells
his worldly possessions and
moves to Hollywood seeking
fame and fortune, Mr.
McCarthy, packed his things,
got in his car, and left his tiny
hamlet in upstate New York in
pursuit of the love of his life; his
wife, Lindsay. No, he didn’t live
out of a van like some yet to be
movie star, but he did make a
sacrifice by moving to
Massachusetts. That move was
lucky for us as he landed a job
at the Hillside School.
Mr. McCarthy flies under the
radar most of the time, but his
contributions to the school have
not gone unnoticed. He
performs his job in a low key yet
effective way. He doesn’t need
a lot of recognition. He just rolls
up his sleeves, puts his head
down, and quietly goes to work
day in and day out. Mr.
McCarthy is a throwback to a
day when actions spoke louder
than words. And Mr. M’s actions
speak loudly here on Bulldog
campus.
Cool Facts about Mr. McCarthy
• Has 100 MPH slap shot
• Went to Hobart College in NY
• Has 2 children (Lena & Kael)

the site of our second cultural
dinner for the Global Club.
The boys signed up, chipped
in $10 a piece, loaded in the
bus, and were driven down to
a really nice little restaurant
tucked away behind Main

of whether the restaurant was
acceptable was yet to come.
After ordering, if the Mexican
and Guatemalan contingents
gave the thumbs up for tasty
authentic Mexican food, then
we knew we had a gem on
our hands. Zarape got the

Jose
The Minister of Defense and
the Chairman of the Boards is
one and the same. His name is
Jose Lara and he is a force out

of information comes directly
from assistant coach Phil Tang
who battles this young man in
nightly scrimmages. Fay, Fenn,

grab just about every available
rebound. He does it with good
size, grit, determination, and
natural toughness.
Jose comes from the
Dominican Republic. The
Dominican shares an island in
the Caribbean with Haiti.
Despite having only 10 million
citizens, the Dominican
produces perhaps the best
baseball players on the planet.
The list includes guys like: David
“Big Pappy” Ortiz, Robinson
Cano, Pedro Martinez, Vladimir
Guerrero, Julio Franco, and so
many more. Jose Lara plays
baseball too and is looking

forward to starring on Mr. Evan’s
squad in the spring. However,
before that, there is a little
something called basketball
starting next week and Lara
expects to excel in that sport
too. Coach Delahoz describes
him as competitive and
tenacious. He has a lean long
body and is a scrapper under
the boards. Jose gives the

Foods from Abroad
From England
Yorkshire Pudding also known as batter pudding, is an English
dish made from batter consisting of eggs, flour, and milk. The dish is
usually served with roast meat and gravy and is a staple of the
traditional British Sunday roast. The exact origin of the Yorkshire
pudding is, as yet, unknown. The first ever recorded recipe appears
in a book in 1737. If you haven’t tried it yet, you simply must. It is a
rare treat that is the perfect compliment to meat on a Sunday dinner.

From Guatemala
Garnachas are wonderful. Although they are not Diego’s
favorite, they are still delicious. Essentially, they are hand- made
fried tortillas with ground or chopped pork pieces of meat that are
flavored with pure homemade tomato sauce, cotija cheese, and
topped off with paper thin sliced onions. You can also add
Guatemalan sour cream and cilantro. Mmmm…give these tasty
treats a try. You will love this Guatemalan dish.

Nabe is a popular Japanese hot pot dish commonly served in the
cold winter months. It is cooked at the table and served
communally. A nabe with a wide variety of ingredients (such as a
combination of beef, chicken, and seafood) is called a yosenabe

crab, duck, or pork) served with assorted vegetables and noodles. It
is a great meal on a cold winter night.

Skunk Ape
The Skunk Ape, also known as the Swamp Ape, Stink Ape, Florida Bigfoot, Myakka Ape, and the
Myakka Skunk Ape, is a hominid cryptid said to inhabit Florida, as well as North Carolina and
Arkansas, although reports from Florida are more common. It is named for its appearance and
for the unpleasant odor that is said to accompany it. According to the United States National
Park Service, the Skunk Ape exists only as a local myth. Reports of the Skunk Ape were
particularly common in the 1960s and 1970s. In the fall of 1974, numerous sightings were reported
in suburban neighborhoods of Dade County, Florida, of a large, foul-smelling, hairy, ape-like
creature, which ran upright on two legs.
In 2000, two photographs said to be of the Skunk Ape were taken by an
anonymous woman and mailed to the Sarasota County, Florida, Sheriff's
Department. The photographs were accompanied by a letter from the
woman in which she claims to have photographed an ape-like creature in
her backyard. The woman wrote that on three different nights this “thing”
had entered her backyard to take apples left on her back porch. She was
convinced that these photographs are of the infamous skunk ape. The
pictures have become known to Bigfoot enthusiasts as the "skunk ape
photos."
Reincarnation
James Leininger at a very young age had a deep fascination with
WW2 fighter planes. His parents noticed that he could identify parts of a
plane without prior knowledge. He began to create several drawings of
planes in combat. He kept drawing planes crashing into the ocean.
These drawings were soon replaced by vivid nightmares and young
James started to recount detailed images of a WWII air battle in Japan.
He believed himself to be the reincarnation of a WWII fighter pilot. In
disbelief, his parents set out to prove him wrong. They asked him what
type of planes he flew and where he took off from. James could answer
each question with ease.
The Leininger’s started to do some research about WWII fighter pilots and were led to Natoma
Bay. They then found veterans that told of a fellow pilot who had a similar story to James’
descriptions. Jack Larson maintained that James’ recollections sounded a lot like a buddy of his
who was shot down on March 3rd, 1945. Many came to believe that young James was in fact 21
year old James M. Huston. Family members of Hutson were contacted and subsequently shocked
to hear James talk in detail about them. The case remains as one of the most perplexing in
history. If it was a hoax, it was a very elaborate one. If it was real, then maybe reincarnation is the
answer to an age old question.
