A new community
partnership program
Children’s Home of Detroit
(CHD) has developed a new community partnership with the
Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption
Society (GPAAS) and the Michigan
Humane Society (MHS). As partners, MHS will lend their assistance by providing small companion pets who have been evaluated
for health and temperament and
GPAAS will then place these pets
with CHD in foster care to ready
them for adoption.
While looking for a suitable
home the pets will be fostered by
the children in our residential program. The community is welcome
to attend the GPAAS adoption days
located at the Children’s Home of
Detroit. Over the past 10 years,
GPAAS has been finding homes
primarily for dogs and cats; however, we are looking forward to
expanding this to the small pets
provided by MHS. We will not be
equipped to accept pets from individuals. This program is a means
to find a warm and loving home in
the community for these companion pets.

When should your child
first see an orthodontist?
Many families visit their general
dentist every six months for regular
dental cleanings and exams. This is
a very healthy habit, ensuring their
oral health is being monitored. A
question I frequently get asked by
parents is, “When should my child
see an orthodontist?”
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children
have their first check up with an orthodontist no later than age seven.
Even though patients rarely need
treatment at this young age, there
may be some conditions that warrant intervention. Some early conditions which may not be noticeable
include abnormal jaw growth, spacing considerations, or problems with
the eruption of permanent teeth. In
certain circumstances, early treatment may be beneficial by guiding
the growth of the jaws, by eliminating harmful habits (such as finger
or thumb sucking), and by decreasing the risk of trauma to protruding
teeth.

each patient’s individual needs and
offer advice on

to begin. With all of that being said,
you are never too old to see an orthodontist. The benefits of orthodontics are not just for adolescents
anymore. Nowadays, many adults
are having orthodontic treatment to

technology, many new options
are available. Depending on the
circumstances of each patient,
orthodontic treatment may utilize
metal braces, ceramic braces, or
in some circumstances, “invisible
braces” (Invisalign) to straighten
their teeth and correct their bite.

It’s a story as old as Adam and
Eve. The man builds the house and then the woman wants to decorate it.
The same is true with House
Wrens - the male builds the home,
and the female decorates it. Only
in this case it’s a nest, like the one
in the photo. I found it - and four
babies - in a nesting box on one of
our local golf courses a couple of
years ago.
House Wrens will be coming into
the Grosse Pointes in pretty good
numbers over the next month. Almost immediately upon arriving,
the male will choose an appropriate nesting site - a grassy, shrubby
area with lots of insects - and will
begin to build a nest. The nest will
likely be in a small cavity low in a
tree or a birdhouse that some caring human has put out. He’ll spend
many hours building a cup out of
twigs, which of course will never
be good enough for his mate. She
will finish the job her way, lining
the nest with grass, hair and feathers. Both parents will then take
turns incubating the eggs and providing food for the young. A typical House Wren nest will have four
to eight eggs, and the young will
fledge a little more than two weeks
after hatching.
House wrens are tiny but highly

energetic with a loud, rapid, chattering song. It never ceases to amaze
me how a bird that’s about five
inches long and weighs only about
half an ounce can produce so much

also one of the most widely distributed birds in the world, living
year-round in South America and
coastal southern California. In
spring, many birds will move north
into the central United States to
southern Canada. In urban areas,
House Wrens compete with House
Sparrows for nesting sites. So if you
put a nesting box in your yard hoping to attract wrens, make sure the
access hole is small enough to prevent predators and House Sparrows
from entering. If the entrance is
too large, the larger and more aggressive House Sparrows will enter
and kill the young wrens and claim
the box for their own.
After the young leave the nest,
House Wrens will set about preparing for a second brood. The male,
however, will often choose to mate
with a second female. Having not
learned his lesson with his first
mate, he’ll build a perfectly good
nest only to discover that she wants
to decorate...

IT’S THE LAW
A TIME FOR CHILDREN

Minors possessing or
consuming alcohol
With limited exceptions, it is
against the law for any person under the age of 21 to possess or consume alcoholic beverages.
There have been some recent
changes in the law.
Under the old law, a minor convicted of consuming or possessing
alcohol as a first offender can be
sentenced
to substance
abuse treatment, a fine
of $100 and
c o m mu n i t y
service. Jail
time cannot
be imposed.
The penalties
for
second
and third offenders are
increased.
Second
offenders can
be sentenced
to a $200
fine,
substance abuse
treatment
and community service,
while third
offenders
can receive a $500 fine, substance
abuse treatment and community
service. In addition, there are mandatory drivers license suspensions
for second and third offenders. A
second offender’s drivers license
must be suspended for 90 days
with a restricted license possible
after 30 days. A third offenders
drivers license must be suspended
for one year, with a restricted license possible after 60 days.
First, second, and third offenders

law. However, some judges have
taken the position that the court
can impose jail time up to 30 days
for contempt of court if the offender failed to

probation,

In a related topic, legislation now
provides that it is an affirmative
defense if the minor consumed
the alcohol in a venue or location
where that consumption was legal,
such as Canada.

Art as therapy
Wikipedia defines expressive
therapy as “the intentional use
of the creative arts as a form of
therapy.” Children’s Home of Detroit utilizes therapeutic art to help
children and families in the healing process. Often words alone
cannot be found or used to explore
and resolve issues of trauma. Art
provides children the opportunity
to express thoughts, feelings and
emotions at their own pace when
“words are not enough.”
CHD’s art therapist, Danielle
Casazza, uses therapeutic art to
help assess and diagnose children’s
areas of strengths and needs. She
employs art as a means to “learn
a new skill, complete a task and
feel a sense of accomplishment after being successful at something
new.”
Danielle creates group art projects so children learn to work together. These projects allow children the opportunity to “work
out” conflicts, turn mistakes into
“happy mistakes” and learn that,
it is the effort that they put into
the project not the final piece that
matters.

of our rich
collaboration of the community.
The program is funded in part by
the legacy of Jack Navin and Robert Burckhalter who were prominent citizens in the Grosse Pointe
area. They were invested in the
arts and wished to see children of
CHD enriched through the arts.
The Great Frame Up has offered
to frame and display the children’s creations for the CHD’s Art
Show to be held late summer. The
Grosse Pointe Artists Association
will judge the artwork and provide
awards for our young artists.

Last month we discussed some
of the subtleties of pet food labeling. In light of the recent pet food
recalls and contamination scares,
it is obvious that further discussion about pet foods is needed.
One common response to the recalls has been clients asking for
homemade recipes for their petseither raw diets or foods they cook
themselves at home.
The task of combining protein,
carbohydrate and fat sources with
the correct combination of vitamins and minerals for proper nutrition is daunting at best. How would
a person test the bioavailability of
the nutrients? How
would a
person
know if the preparation of the food
destroyed some of the nutrients or
combined them inappropriately?
Of course, this is all assuming that
a person knows what nutrients are
essential in a diet to begin with.
Raw food diets frighten most
veterinarians. This fear is not only
for the above reasons but, also,
because of the risk of salmonella,
clostridium and other bacteria to
the pets, and humans in the household as well.
Talk to your veterinarian about
the proper feeding of your pet. Do
not hesitate to contact the pet food
companies with any questions you
may have. They all have a web site
and contact phone number. Many
of them list it right on the pet food
label. Do not hesitate to question,
comment and complain to them.
This recent pet food recall was too
frightening to allow any relaxation
in vigilance for the sake of our
pets.

With prom just around the corner, more and more teens are becoming ever so eager to obtain a
flawless, bronze glow. However,
what most teens don’t know is their
bronze glow may cost them their
life or at least

“ghost”. Many
studies have
proven that UVA rays in tanning
beds are 15% stronger than those
of the sun. This means that teens
who spend their time in tanning
salons have a greater risk of getting skin cancer.

it is very important to apply extra

still feel the need to have a summer tan, make it a healthy one.
Try sunless tanners or lotions that
gradually change the color of skin
over time with repeated use.
Along with tanning salons, there
are many things that raise an individual’s risk of skin cancer. These
variables include a family history
of skin cancer and having more
than 50 moles. In addition, a person may be more prone to cancer
if he/she has had serious sunburns
or has “binge tanned” in the past.

high altitude increases one’s chances but not too much. People with
