WAYNE SHORTER
QUARTET
‘ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT COMPOSERS AND
INDIVIDUAL SAXOPHONISTS IN JAZZ’ – THE NEW YORK TIMES
The influential 82-year-old
saxophonist from classic
ensembles with Miles Davis,
Weather Report, and Art
Blakey’s Jazz Messengers,
10-time Grammy Awardwinner Wayne Shorter will
draw Vivid LIVE to a euphoric
close with his signature,
improvised solos and a life’s
work of classic compositions.
A living and breathing
bloodline between the golden
age of jazz standards, the
cosmic ‘70s and fusion
staples, Shorter has also
featured on 10 albums from
folk legend Joni Mitchell
as well as Steely Dan’s
definitive Aja. The Lifetime
Achievement-winner has
drawn critical acclaim with
4
his decade-long collaboration
that is the Wayne Shorter
Quartet; his first permanent
acoustic ensemble featuring
pianist Danilo Perez, bassist
John Patitucci, and Brian Blade
on drums. Investigating his
trademark works with the same
exploratory spirit with which
he made his name, one of the
most charismatic figures in the
history of jazz returns for his
first performance in Sydney in
six years.

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE
ESPERANZA SPALDING PRESENTS:
EMILY’S D+EVOLUTION
‘THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN TO JAZZ SINCE
WYNTON MARSALIS’ – VILLAGE VOICE
Making her Australian debut
a decade into her career, the
multiple Grammy-winning jazz
prodigy stages an ambitious artpop performance rekindling her
childhood interest in theatre,
poetry and movement and
delving into a broader concept
of performance. Originally
conceived the day before her
birthday, during a ‘sleepless
night of full moon inspiration’,
Emily’s D+Evolution will
feature all new material which
Esperanza says ‘unfolds as live
musical vignettes.’
A voracious and magnetic
performer, Spalding is
attentively studious towards
what the process of playing
live presents to the structure
of a song – whether sharing a
stage with her own revolving
ensembles or playing with
Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder,
Janelle Monae or Prince.
Emily’s D+Evolution is a fresh
artistic vision – a daring
tapestry of music, vibrant
imagery, performance art
and stage design.
