QLD POLICE STRENGTHEN LGBTI
LIAISON OFFICER PROGRAM
T
he Queensland Police
Service has bolstered
its gay and lesbian
liaison program this month
by
introducing
District
LGBTI Liaison Coordinators
for each district within the
state to ensure that every
area of the state has adequate
access to the program.
There are currently over 100
qualified LGBT police liaison
officers
stationed
around
Queensland
A statement from the Queensland
Police Service says the role of the
new district LGBTI coordinators
is to:
Consult with the regional LGBTI
Liaison Program coordinator
and district officers.
Monitor LGBTI issues at a
district level and develop
strategies to address them.
Provide advice to the district
officer on issues affecting the
program.
Provide direction and support
to district LBGTI liaison officers
and other vested QPS personnel.
Manage the appointment of
new liaison officers based on
district priorities, suitability
of applicant and current
requirements.
Maintain a list of district liaison
officers.
Maintain an internal district
liaison officer email account (all
district liaison officers).
Maintain and monitor a district
LGBTI Program external email
account.
Identify training / awareness
opportunities for district liaison
officers and other vested QPS
personnel.

broadcaster for it’s support
The Senators’ concerns stem
from SBS’s decision to publicly
declare themselves as supporters
of marriage equality earlier this
year, and for participating in a
marriage equality campaign which
saw the SBS logo appear in full
page advertisements in major daily
newspapers alongside the logos of
large companies who also support
marriage equality such as Qantas,
Optus and Google.

expenditure – and was swiftly
accused of abusing his position by
Senator Canavan.
JOIN THE RED RIBBON RUN
W
orld AIDS Day is just
around the corner
and along with the
traditional candle light vigil
and memorial service, this
year will see a brand event to
help bring people together to
mark this important day.
For the first time, Brisbane will
host a red ribbon fun run where
participants will be able to join a
5km fun run along the banks of the
Brisbane River around New Farm
Park on Saturday 28 November.
The run is free to enter and is
open to anyone who would like
to participate regardless of age or
fitness, with pets also encouraged to
join in the fun. All participants are
encouraged to wear red (the redder
the better), with a prize for best
dressed. All funds raised on the
day will be donated to THE HOPE
Fund which provides support to
people living with HIV (PLHIV) in
Queensland who are in need.

Japan has a new Minister of Education
and he has promised to use his
position to promote LGBT rights to his
countrymen. A former professional
wrestler and teacher, Hiroshi Hase says
he wants to stand up for LGBT students.
“Let me be clear on this, I believe sexualminority students at elementary and
junior high schools have been left out.
Now I am considering preparations for
the next step.” Hiroshi added that he
would utilise the 2020 Tokyo Olympics
to promote social issues.
JAMAICA: GAY AUTHOR WINS 2015
MAN BOOKER PRIZE
Openly gay Jamaican author Marlon
James has won the world’s most
prestigious literary award, the Man
Booker Prize for his novel, A Brief
History of Seven Killings. The 680 page
tome was inspired by an assassination
attempt on legendary reggae star Bob
Marley in the 1970s. Despite being a
very homophobic nation, James included
a number of LGBT characters in his
story. “It was very important to me that
there were gay characters in the book
to reflect the gayness and hypocrisy in
Jamaica,” James said.
UK: ENGLAND AND WALES
EMBRACE NEW MARRIAGE LAWS
Over 15,000 same sex couples have
married in the United Kingdom since
marriage equality was introduced to
England and Wales in March last year
according to Britain’s Office for National
Statistics. Roughly half of these couples
(7,366) held a stand alone wedding
ceremony, while 7,732 chose to convert
their existing civil partnership into
marriage. Of the total number of samesex marriages, females were slightly
more likely to marry 55% than male
couples 45%.

there to bring in the new year
while performing his one man
show at the Lismore City Hall
on 29 & 30 December.
Cumming has done it all in show
biz having won Olivier and
Tony Awards, as well as being
nominated for Golden Globe and
Emmy awards. He also written
a NY Times bestseller and was
named by Time Magazine as one
of the most fun people in show
business.
His one man show
Alan Cumming: Sings Sappy
Songs, which has just enjoyed
a sold out season in New York,
promises to bring down the house
with eclectic, wildly entertaining
and intimate stories and witty
reinterpretations of pop songs and
stage classics.
The
addition
of
a
huge
international celebrity is really the
feather in the cap for the Tropical
Fruits Festival which already
boasts a street parade, massive
NYE party, art exhibition, a pool
party, cabaret performances, and a
recovery party that is even bigger
than most NYE parties!
The festival opens on 29 December
with a parade through Lismore.
The parade will finish up at
Lismore City Hall where there
will be a free community party
from 5:30pm to 7pm, immediately
prior to Mr Cummings’ first
performance.

WAS JOHN LENNON BISEXUAL?
J
ohn Lennon was attracted
to the idea of sex with
other men but was too
“inhibited” to act on those
desired according to his
widow Yoko Ono.
In an interview with the Daily
Beast, Ono says that the couple
were always very open with each
other in their conversations about
sexuality.
“No, not inhibited. He said, ‘I
don’t mind if there’s an incredibly
attractive guy.’ It’s very difficult:
They would have to be not just
physically attractive, but mentally
very advanced too. And you can’t
find people like that.”
“The beginning of the year he
was killed, he said to me, ‘I could
have done it, but I can’t because I
just never found somebody that
was that attractive.’ Both John and
I were into attractiveness—you
know—beauty.”
As for the long standing rumours
that Lennon had a sexual
relationship with former Beatles
Manager Brian Epstein, Ono says
the she thinks Epstein made a pass
at John but nothing happened.
“John and I had a big talk about it,
saying, basically, all of us must be
bisexual. And we were sort of in
a situation of thinking that we’re
not [bisexual] because of society,”
Ono said. “So we are hiding the
other side of ourselves, which is
less acceptable. But I don’t have
a strong sexual desire towards
another woman.
“I mean, both John and I thought
it was good that people think we
were bisexual, or homosexual.”
While Ono believes that John had
same sex attractions, she says that
he never acted on them.
“I think he had a desire to, but I
think he was too inhibited.

THE MEME IS A LERSBERN

aggie Goldenberger,
is not a household
name
but
one
infamous photo of her taken
many years ago has made her
instantly recognisable all over
the world as the Ermahgerd
Goosebumps girl when the
image became one of the best
known memes on the internet.
Speaking this month with
Vanity Fair, Goldenberger
let the world know about
the real person behind the
photo, including the fact
that she is out and proud.
Goldenberger, now a nurse
in Phoenix says that she
discovered the meme whilst
on an extended trip throughout
Asia with her then girlfriend in
2012, adding that three years later
she remains as shocked now as she
was when she discovered her new
found fame.
“My eyes just get wide and I
say, out loud, ‘This is so fucking
weird,’” Goldenberger said.
“I just can’t believe this is my 15
minutes of fame―I was hoping it
would come in another form. But
I guess you have to take what you
can get.”
As for the photo itself, it was
taken when Goldenberger was 11
years old and was dressing up in
character with friends. Putting
on a horrible vest, wearing her
hair in pigtails
that she would

wear and holding

The polaroid image was on some of
Goldenbergers own social media
sites as a joke reminising about
fun times in the 90s before it was

The meme has since many different

her favourites is her photo.

Davis, who earned the ire of
countless people around the world
for refusing to comply with a US
Supreme Court ruling legalising
same-sex marriage, though now
married, has been divorced three
times.

Wait for it... Kim Davis vs The
Westboro Baptist Church.
The ‘God Hates Fags’ Westboro
Baptist Church is certainly no
friend to the LGBT community
but it seems as though they dislike
Kentucky clerk Kim Davis just as
much as we do. In fact the church
hates Kim Davis so much that they
want to sing it out for the world to
hear – literally!
While the church is normally
content with picketing funerals
and events with offensive signs,
this time around they have decided
to take a more creative approach
by reworking Neil Diamond’s
Kentucky Woman into a parody
number attacking Davis over her
infidelity and multiple divorces.
With lead vocals by Shirley PhelpsRoper (daughter of church founder
Fred Phelps), the churches song
includes the lyrics: “Kentucky
woman/She caused fag marriage/
Now fags own her/Kentucky
woman!”, and “full of adulteries,
constantly changing her name/ But
she’s still proud, and that’s why the
Christians are blamed/ And God
hates her; she knows God hates her.”
Before releasing the song, the
Westboro Baptist Church also
picketed Davis’ workplace with
church accusing her of being a
hypocrite via Twitter.
“Christianity is not a smorgasbord
religion – you don’t pick what you
like & leave the rest,” the group
tweeted before adding “Singing to
Kim Davis in KY cuz she refused
to give fags marriage licenses but
gave herself FOUR?! Both are sins!”.
Davis herself is now a musical
sensation (sort of) with a Davis

REPLACES STEPHEN FRY AS QI HOST

“For 13 years I had one of the best
jobs on television,” Fry said via the
BBC.
A
fter thirteen years as
the face of the hugely
popular comedy quiz
show QI, Stephen Fry has
announced that he will be
relinquishing the host’s chair
which he has sat in since the
show’s inception.
Known for his razor sharp wit and
intelligence, Fry leaves big shoes
to fill but the BBC believe that they
have the perfect replacement in
comedian Sandi Toksvig.
Toksvig, who is also openly gay, was
a regular guest on the show and has
hosted other BBC programs such as
1001 Things You Should Know, and
the game show Fifteen to One.
Resident panelist Alan Davies will
continue on in his role on the show
which covers topics under one letter
of the alphabet per series .
In announcing his departure, the
ever gracious Fry was full of praise
for his co-workers and audience.
“Behind the camera squadrons
of quite extraordinarily brilliant
researchers, programme makers
and uniquely curious (in both
senses of the word) people making
that job so much easier.
“In front of the camera generations
of lively minds and above all of
course the wonder of nature that is
Alan Davies.
“After passing the alphabetical

grateful to John Lloyd for devising
QI and for everyone else for making
it such fun.”
Toksvig said Fry had done a
remarkable job as QI host but say
she is really looking forward to
taking up what she described as her
“dream job”.
“Stephen has been utterly brilliant
with the first half of the alphabet.
“Now I look forward to picking up
the baton, mixing my metaphors
and sailing towards the Land
of Nod (ie. Z). Who knows what
lies ahead? It should all be quite
interesting.”

required documents to send off as well as ensuring that I order it enough
weeks in advance to ensure that my supply is not going to run out.

CHRIS WILLIAMS: WHY TAKING
PREP HAS CHANGED MY LIFE
O
ver the the last couple of years
more and more Australian
gay and bisexual men have
been considering PrEP - the once a
day tablet that can prevent you from
contracting HIV. But what is the PrEP
experience really like? To find out we
spoke with Chris Williams, a PrEP
advocate who wants to share his PrEP
journey with other Australians.
How long have you been taking PrEP?
It’s been seven months now after being made aware of PrEP fourteen or
fifteen months ago now after my housemate went on holidays to Hawaii
and heard about this amazing little pill that meant that you didn’t contract
HIV. He came back and was fascinated by it.
How did you start treatment?
I approached my GP after having decided within myself that this is what I
wanted to do. I hadn’t been able to gain a place on one of the free trails so
wanted to find out if I could do it privately. Unfortunately PrEP is not yet
approved in Australia so the best option for me was to buy it from overseas.
Did you have any concerns about importing medication from overseas
pharmacies?
Well it’s certainly not as convenient as taking my prescription from my
GP and walking into any local pharmacy and getting the medication, but
it’s not overly complicated either but it does require some extra diligence

I work on the basis that I could be sexually active at any time so take it every
day. I’m comfortable doing this and I have not experienced any noticeable
side effects so I guess there is no repucusions that I can see for taking it
daily, only benefits.
There are often some short term side effects when people first start taking
PrEP. Did you experience any of these?
Yeah, I did have a very mild upset stomach for a couple of days. I know
people often report an upset stomach for up to a week before it subsides.
The most interesting side effect was that after about 10 days after I started
taking it I was having the most amazingly vivid dreams for around ten to
fourteen days. I did a little reading and found that it is not uncommon for
some antiretroviral medications to have that effect.
Over the last few years, PrEp users in the US have been labeled ‘Truvada
whores’ and other derogatory names. Have you experienced any of this
negativity?
I think that it’s all wrapped up in the term ‘slut shaming’. I have experienced
a little bit of that online and generally that has come from a faceless profile.
I guess it’s very easy to throw out stigma while hiding behind a mobile
phone screen, particularly when you don’t have a picture but I am yet to
experience it on a face to face basis or even on an online basis when the
other person has declared who they are. There is a little bit of stigma here
but it is not anywhere near as prevalent as it has been in the United States.
Has it changed your outlook on sex? Do you feel more protected?
As a result of taking PrEP one of the fantastic side effects is that my levels
of anxiety are significantly reduced in relation to how I feel about HIV.
It’s something that I am lo longer frightened of and my anxiety towards
it and engaging sexually with the people who have it is non existent now.
Somebody else’s HIV status now has nothing to do with my decision
making in terms of how I will interact sexually with that person.

BRISBANE CITY COUNCIL REJECTS
LGBT ADVISORY Committee

risbane City Council
has officially rejected a
petition from the LGBT
community asking for the
formation of a Lesbian Gay
Bisexual Transgender and
Intersex (LGBTI) Advisory
Committee.
Despite attracting hundreds of
signatures, Council informed the
petition’s creator Phil Browne who
heads the Brisbane LGBTIQ Action
Group (BLAG) that a separate
LGBTI Advisory Committee such
as the ones seen in world cities like
San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Chigaco,
West Hollywood, Toronto and
Vancouver is not necessary.
A number of Australian councils
have also implemented LGBTI
advisory committees or LGBTI
action plans including Hobsons Bay
City Council, Banyule City Council,
Darebin City council, Moonee
Valley
Council,
Maroondah
City Council, Greater Geelong
City Council and North Sydney
Council, while the Victorian and
ACT governments also have LGBTI
Advisory Committees. Sydney City
Council even goes a step further

Council’s Inclusive Brisbane Board
includes an LGBTI representative,
Dr Peter Black who has previously
served as the President of the
Brisbane Pride Festival.
Both The Greens and Labor’s Lord
Mayoral candidates Ben Pennings
and Rod Harding have stated that
their respective parties would fight
to change Council’s position at next
year’s council election.
“A New World City is one that
actively supports communication
with and inclusion of marginalized
people. Council hasn’t been listening
closely to these communities and
a formal advisory committee is a
great first step in developing a better
relationship of trust and inclusion,”
Mr Pennings said.

acknowledges that the council
has made a number of significant
steps towards fostering a closer
relationship with the LGBTI
community in recent years but
sees this decision as a missed
opportunity.

City Council has flown a rainbow
flag for IDAHOT this year and
the Mayor has marched in the
annual Pride March, it is essential
to understand that LGBTI issues
happen all year round and need a
forum for timely discussion, and

Sheena Easton:
Still Queen of the Strut
S

heena Easton is strutting
back to Australia to
play her extensive back
catalogue at the Twin Towns
Services Club.
After early hits like the classic
“9 to 5 (Morning Train)”, Sheena
conquered 1980s pop after
collaborating with Prince on
her signature track “Strut”, her
gorgeously suggestive “Sugar
Walls” and her duet with the
Purple One “U Got The Look.”
“He actually saw me on the
Tonight Show in the States. I was
in the studio at the time; I’d had
a few albums under my belt,”
Sheena explained.
“He wrote ‘Sugar Walls’ for me. I
came into the studio the next day
and my engineer said, ‘I’ve got a
tape for you,’ - back then it was
reel-to-reel, we were working on
the 48 tracks - and he wound it up
and played a basic demo.
“He told me, ‘Prince said if you like
the song, come over and record it.’
We did, I think within two days of
hearing it.”
“U Got The Look” was intended
to be a solo song until Prince liked
what he heard from Sheena in the
studio.
“I’d get a 2am call from him, ‘Hey,
want to come down and hear some
stuff?’ You tended to do that to
friends when you were working
on a project; you’d call them and
say, ‘Come down and tell me if this
a good song,’” she said.
“I listened to the finished track. It
was just a solo song. He asked me,
‘Do you want to put your voice in
there on there backup vocals?’ and
I said, ‘Yeah shove me in there!’ I
went in and started singing, but I
was a little bit off. I was singing in
the wrong places but he said ‘I like
your voice there. Do that again.’
“On the spot he decided to turn
it into a duet because our voices
are so different and he loved the
juxtaposition. It wasn’t planned by
any means.”
Sheena has lived in Nevada for
several decades but grew up
in Scotland as the youngest of
six children. She counts Barbra
Streisand as one of her earliest
musical influences.
FEATURE
“When I was coming up my older
brothers and sisters had their own
favourite styles of music. I was
going in their rooms and stealing
their albums and singing along
with them. I was teaching myself
to sing but it wasn’t something
I was consciously doing,” she
recalled.
“I was practicing with some of
the great vocalists, and Barbra
Streisand was just the epitome
of the perfect female voice when
I was coming up. No-one could
beat her, in my opinion. I’d put the
records on and try and sing and
hold the notes like her.
“She doesn’t know it but she went a
long way to teach me how to sing. I
probably owe her a fee somewhere
along the way!”
One of Sheena’s earliest hits was
her theme song for 1981 James
Bond film For Your Eyes Only.
But whereas Sam Smith’s Bond
song “The Writing’s On The Wall”
was teased out over months this
year, Sheena remembers her
experience with the iconic series
was much faster.
“I’d only had a couple of hits and I
was very new to everything. There
was just so much happening at
once,” Sheena recalled.
“We met [Bond film producer]
Cubby Broccoli in the studio and
I was lucky that I didn’t have
enough time to panic. I didn’t
have enough time to second-guess
things. I also had a great deal of
confidence in my producer.”
Sheena’s last album, 2000’s disco
cover album Fabulous, didn’t
take off commercially but was so
successful in the local club scene
that Sheena was a special guest at
the 2001 Sydney Gay and Lesbian
Mardi Gras.
“Those songs have woven their
way in and out of my sets over the
years,” she said.
“I always do the main hits and
then I change the music that
supports them. I’ll think, ‘I haven’t
done this song in 15 years, it’s an
old school cut.’ The fans I see at
shows again and again will tell
me, ‘I’m so glad you put that song
in!’”

For Socrates’ is a smart option

during the festival and embrace

archival footage throughout. A

penly gay UK singersongwriter Will Young
has featured a naked
trans man in his video for
new single “Brave Man.”
The video follows a young man who
takes off his clothes and wandering
through city streets, covering
himself with his hands in the face
of giggling and abusive members of
the public.
“It seems extremely brave to be a
man in a woman’s body and then
decide to do something about this,”
Will explained in an emotional
Facebook post.
“I realised that there is often coverage
of what it is to be a woman in a man’s
body, but never to my knowledge the
documenting of the opposite.”
The video divided opinion on
Twitter, with some claiming the clip
was insensitive and triggering for
trans people.
But Will praised the video’s trans
star Finn’s performance and the
clip’s director Wiz for his “nonsensationalist and honest” handling
of the subject matter.
“Through casting we found Finn.
The vulnerability, strength and
intelligence he has is so abundant
on camera. Really, I have not met
someone like him before. Someone

who has an inherent strength and a
determination whilst also holding
such vulnerability,” Will said.
“To express and show this is actually
the bravest and most wonderful
thing to do.”
He added: “Through tough times
embracing myself as someone

struggles as well as their inner
strength and determination to be
their true authentic selves. When I
wrote the song, this is what I was
referring to – the determination in
modern life to be my authentic self.
“In this video we see a man
determined to be himself in the
face of all adversity from inside and
outside. It isn’t brave but, my god, it
shows true grit and strength. What a
wonderful thing.”

The 20-year-old Perth Youtuberturned-popstar
has
released
the clips for the album’s first
three singles as the “Blue
Neighbourhood” video trilogy beginning with “Wild”, continuing
with “Fools” and concluding with
“Talk Me Down” - telling the story
of two young men whose romance
is stifled by family intolerance.
Iv’e been excited for a long time
to be honest as an artist, because
we’re in a really cool time when we
can be, Troye told Out Magazine.
“I’m gay. I like boys. These songs
are about boys. I think some
people think I’m trying to make
this big statement by having a boy
in these videos. It’s like, what, am I
supposed to have? A girl?
But Troye told Out he felt it was
important for him to reach not
only to his fans but the people
around them.
It makes me so frustrated [thinking
about] the potential we’ve already
lost in the war against LGBT
suicide,” he said.
“So much of that happens because
of the way those around LGBT
people deal with the news. I hope
my fans’ parents see it, or they’re
watching it on their laptops and
