To get his license, Gale said
he needed to have a certain
amount of hours flying with
an instructor, which comes out
to around 10-20 hours. He
also needed to fly a certain
amount of solo hours, with
nobody in the basket.
Then a certified flight examiner is brought in for an hour
flight, who runs through a
bunch of different scenarios
and tasks.
Before the Thursday flight,
Gale said he thought the
weather was going to be great.
He and his crew, made of
mostly family and friends, released a few smaller, colorful
party balloons to help guage
his absolute direction. With
winds generally flowing
northeast across the county,
Gale said there wasn’t much
‘steerage’ for his flight path.
He also said it’s incredibly
hard to explain what it’s
like once they leave the
ground, and there really isn’t a
sensation of moving while flying.
When the burners are running, he said it’s quite loud.

yelling ‘Hello!’” During the
flight, many residents looked
up to wave at the balloons,
and some cars pulled over to
the side of the road to gaze at
the colorful show in the sky.
Although the goal of Thursday’s Splash and Dash flight
was to drop a rubber duckie
on an ‘X’ on the lake, Gale
said during his flight his balloon wouldn’t make it. Instead, he made for the Vermilion County Regional Airport
to make for a clear landing.
