Second Collection Next Week:
Fund for Retired Priests
Immaculate Conception Parish
We are well into ordination season. Five men were ordained priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago on May 21.
On May 29 and again today permanent deacons have been or are being ordained for our diocese.
In Chapter 6 of the Acts of the Apostles we hear of a problem that arose among the Hellenists, that is, the Greek
speaking Jewish widows in the early Church community. At that time when a woman became widowed, the inheritance went from father to son, so a widow relied on her son for support. If something happened to the son, the widow would have nothing and would have to rely on her community for support. In this early Christian community, the
Apostles took care of the widows. However, as the Apostles became more involved in spreading the Gospel, they
began neglecting the widows. When the widows complained, the Apostles decided to select seven reputable men to
serve the widows. So the Apostles imposed hands on the men and thus the first deacons were ordained-Stephen,
Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch. However, in the very next chapter of Acts, we
see Stephen suffering martyrdom; not because he was helping the widows, but for preaching the Gospel. A little later
on we see the deacon Philip also proclaiming the Gospel. These events give rise to the ministry of the deacon.
A deacon is ordained not unto the priesthood, but to the threefold ministry of service to the Word, Altar, and Charity. We can summarize our lives as Christians as follows: Each week we hear the Gospel at Mass, we are sent to live
this Gospel at the end of Mass, then we act on the Gospel message during the week and bring the results to offer
back to God at Mass the following week. So, you can see that the ministry of the deacon’s ministry correlates to your
life as a Catholic Christian. The deacon proclaims the Gospel that you hear at Mass, he sends you forth at the end of
Mass, he helps to provide and to encourage Christ-like service opportunities, and he represents all of your service at
Mass the following week.
Some people have said to me that deacons should be able to say Mass. To this I respectfully disagree. The 3
degrees of ordination each have a specific image. Deacons are ordained to be the image of Christ the Servant.
Priests are ordained to be the image of Christ the Priest. Bishops are ordained to be the images of Christ the Teacher and Christ the Shepherd. Since the Mass is a representation of Christ’s sacrifice on Calvary, and a priest is one
who offers sacrifice, saying Mass belongs to the ministry of the priest. The sacraments that a deacon presides at ordinarily are the same ones that a lay person presides at in extraordinary circumstances. A deacon is an ordinary minister of Baptism, but anyone can baptize in danger of death. A deacon is an ordinary minister of the Holy Communion, but as you know we have here at I.C. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. Deacons can witness marriages, but in some places where there is a shortage of priests and deacons a lay person or persons are appointed
by their local bishop to witness marriages.
Hopefully this helps you to better understand the ministry of the deacon. Please contact me through the Parish
Office if you have questions, and perhaps we can discuss these questions in future bulletin articles.
Children's Liturgy of the Word is the practice of
children (age 4-10) leaving the Sunday assembly during the Liturgy of the
Word and gathering elsewhere to celebrate a separate Liturgy of the Word
that is more appropriate to their level of understanding.
Children at Immaculate Conception Parish gather at the 11:15 A.M. Sunday
Mass during Liturgy of the Word. This program is open to all children age 410. After the celebrant calls the
children forward for a blessing,
the catechist and children gather
to discuss the week's readings in
language that is modified for the children's understanding. The work with the
children is very rewarding.
Teenage or adult volunteers are needed to keep this program vibrant and
growing. Please consider helping out. If you are interested in becoming
involved in this important ministry, please contact Julie Szwedo at
[email protected].

IC Youth Ministry Field Trip to
Mundelein Seminary
Children from the Altar Servers, Bell Ringers,
Readers, and Choir were treated to a field trip
Wednesday May 25th to Mundelein Seminary
for all their hard work practicing and serving
the needs of our Parish. It was our way of
thanking the youth for their commitment and
sacrifice to the Immaculate Conception
community.
Gregory J. LaVeau, Altar Server Coordinator, teamed up with Michael
Bednarz from the School Board to reserve buses and a tour guide of the
facility. Renee Baio from the Parents Club helped make the afternoon fun as
well as enjoyable, by providing cool beverages during volleyball and
softball games.
Scott Will, Director of Music Ministries, was accompanied by Melissa
Bednarz, Scheduler of Weekend Readers, and parents to make this event a
success for the choir and bell ringers. The 80 visitors were rewarded with an
“All-You-Can-Eat” luncheon buffet before returning home for the day.
Special thanks to Fr. Srenn, Fr. Andama, IC Holy Name Men’s Club, Scott
Will, Michael Bednarz, and Knights of Columbus Council #4338 for financially
supporting this event.
