Last week saw the unveiling of Queenstown’s first official mural. The ‘Drainbow Trout’
depicts a trout with a drain for a stomach. Clever, right?? Artist Tess Sheerin has installed
the mural with help from volunteers from Wanaka and Queenstown. The painting (which can
be viewed in Earl Street) is the first of five pieces to go up around New Zealand with the hope
of raising awareness of pollution in the country, specifically the damage caused to marine
life.
As an interesting counterpoint: photographs are beginning to emerge of the Chernobyl
exclusion zone almost 30 years after a catastrophic nuclear accident occurred there. These
photographs show a world untouched by human hand and they are truly breathtaking. The
disaster took place on April 28th 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine
and to this day remains the single most devastating man-made event in Earth’s history.
The initial explosion and ensuing fire released large quantities of radioactive matter into
the atmosphere which then spread over much of Europe. A report has accompanied these
photographs detailing that the effects of radiation has not influenced the wildlife population
in the area adversely, with some scientists even going as far to say that the presence of
humans is a bigger threat in the area than the radiation itself. The report has angered many
as the results are inconclusive. At this stage it’s still unknown what kind of long term effects
the accident had on the species in the area but no reports of Simpsons-esque three eyed
fish have emerged as yet.
Luckily for us a piece of legislation was passed by the government in New Zealand in the
wake of the disaster that prohibits nuclear powered and nuclear armed ships from using
our ports and likewise airspace and territories. Anyone who has made the journey into this
country will be aware of the strict biohazard screening system in place to make sure that NZ
stays the pristine ecological canvas it is known to be. The fragility and uniqueness of the
islands that make up NZ cannot be understated with regards to native animal and plant life.
Looking upon the hills in the Queenstown Lakes District it’s plain to see the damage caused
on our indigenous landscape after the introduction of an invasive species like Pine and
Douglas Fir.
James Lord and Pascal Fillion (Back) and Chris Dickson and
Jen Ernst (Front) on the opening day of Queenstown’s newest
craft beer bar Smith’s.

The impact of mankind must be regulated on a day to day basis and litter is a large
component in that. Keeping the country in a state of breathtaking beauty doesn’t just happen
by sheer wishful thinking. This can only be achieved through the hard work of local councils
and groups such as Keep New Zealand Beautiful (knzb.org.nz), a charitable trust who
organise events and initiatives to that end. Their message is simple but strong. Be proud
of your community, do the right thing. At the end of last year QLDC implemented such an
initiative in an effort to keep the CBD litter free. This trial scheme gave local business owners
the opportunity to take their blue bags and cardboard to a number of designated points for
collection twice a day, thus keeping the streets uncluttered for locals and visitors alike. At
last review the scheme was proving effective and its extension was welcomed by business
owners in the area.
It’s not a problem that can be solved overnight; it’s an ideal that takes constant vigilance to
ensure the beauty of this country is maintained. And the real icing on the cake is that it really
doesn’t take that much effort on our part. Captain Planet isn’t around to clean up after us, so
for now – it’s up to us to keep Queenstown beautiful.

Jubilation
Sorry, this is not a whinge. It is actually the opposite. And
in want of a better word, I would call this a jubilation. For
all you avid readers of whingemania, I do apologise. But
sometimes daily life showcases a little gem of humanity that
is just too hard to ignore. I wish LWB had a ‘jubilation
of the week’ and I would present my case in front of it
but alas...
I walked back to my car after finishing work on Thursday
last, conveniently parked in one of the few spots on
Gorge Road that still enables Joe Normal to park all day.
From afar I noticed a white piece of paper tucked under
my wiper. First impression (we all experienced it) was of a
fine for breaking parking rules too strict and ignorant of tax
paying locals. I even had my phone out to take pictures to
prove my innocence and ‘admittedly’ was looking around
for potential witnesses to bolster my case. The size of the
paper was not of the dreaded rectangular version though,
but rather of the folded A4 one. I opened it and read the
following: ‘ Hello, I accidentally scratched the right hand
side of your back bumper. So sorry! My contact number
is ******** We’ll get it sorted. Again, so sorry! Alex B.’
Initially contented I did not receive an (unwarranted)
parking fine, I slowly made my way to inspect the corner
of my right back bumper. Now, I am the proud owner of
what I would call ‘the bruised & battered auto vehicle’.
I truly believe a car is not the epitome of a man. This
ensures that I am not in any way distraught when one of
You know the one! The numerous cars with their little
pieces of paper advertising the age, make, model and
recent repairs (if needed) the vehicle has been subjected
to before Joe Bloggs comes down the road to suss it out.
Now, I don’t mind the fact that people need somewhere
to place their vehicle to sell it. My issue is with the fact that
people are parking outside of residential housing, some
of which only have 1 car parking space attached to the

I know we all like to believe that we do the right thing
at the right time, but it is only once and a while that we
get these little, reminding flashes of awesomeness that
brings home how cool people can sometimes be. Ask
yourself the question - if you would have done this or if
you would have written something about the latest weather
in Reefton, because people were watching you and you
had to be seen writing something.
FACEBOOK/WEBSITE COMMENTS
So Alex, if you read this and the LWB deems it worthy
to publish, please accept my sincere high five to say thank
you for your honesty. I consider the scratch on my right
back bumper as a most valuable addition! In case the good
people of LWB consider a prize, please collect and have
a cold one. You deserve it!
Yes, it’s absolutely great to see a growth in the
butcher, baker, grocer like we used to see in the
good old days. Neat Meat, Organico and the
Artisan Bakery at The Landing are able to supply
fresh, clean and organic produce... prepared in
store with support going to local growers.

property, whilst having 3 - 5 people residing within with
vehicles as well. If we are lucky we get to park a whole
block, maybe 2 away from our own our houses. Oh and
you who parked in two spaces instead of one! Seriously,
WTF?
Don’t get me wrong I love walking, but sometimes after
a long day at work you just want to park the car, get out
and walk 4 maybe 5 car spaces at the longest and you’re
home you know!
I would like to ask the Queenstown Council what they
propose to do to remedy this very long, tedious situation
as it is out of control and annoying the shit out of all of us
who live there!
Frustrated
Response from Lee Webster, Regulatory Manager,
QLDC
This issue crops up periodically, and when we solve it in
one area, it pops up somewhere else.
We have a Traffic and Parking Bylaw that we can use to
ban street-side car sales, but we can’t make it a blanket
prohibition across the whole district.
Do you regularly shop at your local
dairy or convenience store?
our more liberal drivers decides that left isn’t right and
‘dings’ my car. Still, I decided to call the number and was
actually expecting the voice of a non-expecting housewife
somewhere in Gisbourne asking me what the f*** I was on
about. Imagine my amazement when I actually spoke to an
Alex, who readily admitted scratching my car and was oh
so apologetic. What could I say... but thank Alex for his
honesty and say a few words about karma, that I am sure
Alex didn’t actually understand.
Sydney Street Car Yard
Oh Sydney Street! Just far enough out of town to not
hear traffic but close enough to stumble home at all hours
of the morning. Sad truth is, it’s easier to walk to anything
from this area than it is to drive and you wanna know why?
Well that’s because if you decide you need to go to the
supermarket or The Warehouse for a spot of shopping
and leave it that little bit too long... that last carpark... then
becomes part of the “SYDNEY STREET CAR YARD”.
ASK ME
If you get together with your neighbours and collect some
evidence of how this activity is affecting you, please get in
touch with me at QLDC and I will take it to the Mayor
and Councillors. They’re the ones who will ultimately
decide whether to designate Sydney St an area where
street-side car sales are prohibited.

Visa Deprived- Issue 525
I suggest Homeless goes to the CAB (Citizens
Advice Bureau) on Stanley street and see if they
can progress this. They help a lot of migrants with
various issues and they are also in contact with
INZ.
Skimaster
While I sympathise with your situation, I don’t
agree with your view that visa holders are doing
jobs NZers don’t want to do.
The reason for the lack of NZers applying for front
line and entry level positions is simply that some
Queenstown employers take advantage of the
low pay and the adverse living conditions that visa
holders are prepared to put up with.
All the goverment has to do is turn off or restrict
the temporary visa tap and employers will have to
up the ante in regard to making employment an
sustainable opportunity for New Zealand residents
and citizen’s.

audiences through a mixture of positive energy and feel-good
music. Tickets are available from the Lakes District Museum for

Their research has shown that a glass of beer is far better at rehydrating the body after exercise than water.
