April 2012
Hello summer….following a
disappointing winter for ice rinks
and a short spring, summer is
in the air. We are already at the
mid-point of semester two and
wondering where the time has
gone. As we emerge from the
sacred time of Lent, Saint Michael
has been a very busy place with
our winter sports coming to an
end and our avid spring athletes
sprinting around the property. As
we say goodbye to the ice rinks,
volleyball and basketball courts,
fields and stages become the focal
point.
Our push to June was kicked off
with Saint Michael Game Dinner.
Chef Mario Scozzafava and his
culinary arts students stunned
visitors from around Niagara with
a creative and succulent feast.
As this new season moves into
May and June, we look forward to
Art competitions, Art’s Night and
the musical production of “The
Wiz”. Performances will take
place on Thursday, May 3rd and
Friday, May 4th. Congratulations
to all our performers, tech crew,
stage design, supporting cast and
staff members who have created
such an enriching event. For ticket
information please contact Mrs.
D’Amelio in our Main Office. Other
activities that our students are
engaged in include, technological
skills, soccer, rugby, badminton,
track and field and rowing. Our
chess players are currently
matching wits with other chess
teams from around the Board while
our Mathletes are providing great
examples for our young elementary
Mathletes who will be hosted by
Saint Michael for the feeder school
tournament.
The heart of Spring in Niagara
Catholic is Catholic Education
Week and our theme is, “Walking
in the Light of Christ”. You will see
us on display at Niagara Square,
come by and visit. Please note
that you can also find us at www.
saintmichaelmustangs.com. We
are still under construction re: our
website but are looking forward to
unveiling our extensive and custom
crafted site shortly. Meet us there
to get any information regarding
daily schedules and happenings at
Saint Michael.
Please take the time to review the
midterm report card with your son
or daughter and discuss strengths
and areas needing improvement
and possible next steps in the
Saint Michael Catholic High School
process of success. Please
do not hesitate to discuss any
concerns and action plans with
the classroom teacher. There will
be two more Markbook reports to
go home on May 25th and June
20th (or last day before exams).
Please look for these reports in
order to ensure that all markers
of success in your action plan are
present.
May we continue to support and
enjoy the successes that make us
Saint Michael.

CHAPLAINCY NEWS
On Feb 13, Secondary
students gathered for a
Development and Peace
workshop. Students from Saint
Michael used this information to
lead our Lenten prayer services
and inform other students
about how we were supporting
small scale farmers in the
global South during Lent.
The Lenten season began
with our Ash Wed Liturgy.
Our school and community
gathered together with Father.
Tony leading us all in mass.
Father Tony reminded us
that Lent can also be about
“doing something” rather than
“giving up something”. Staff
participated in a Lenten prayer
group each Thursday morning
during the Lenten Season .
On Feb 25, a few students from
Saint Michael’s Respect Life
group attended the Right to Life
dinner put on by St. Catharine’s
Right to Life. The keynote
speaker was Scott Klusendorf,
who spoke to our grade nine
students the following week.

Cha-ching, cha-ching, chaching! What’s that sound you

from the Vintage Hotels,
Niagara College Summer
Jobs Centre, HOCO, Niagara
Parks Commission, Ripley’s
Entertainment, the Niagara

doubt that with the quality of
students that we have at Saint

students were offered a job.

SOCIAL SCIENCE
The Saint Michael Catholic

that travelled to Europe
to commemorate the 95th
anniversary of the Battle of
Vimy Ridge. Carlo Girardo,
a grade 10 history teacher,
promoted this event and
encouraged 6 Saint Michael
students to take part in this
historic occasion. The NCDSB
group of 54 staff, students
and chaperones from 7 high
schools spent 9 days visiting
France, Belgium and the
Netherlands. A highlight was
the April 9th ceremony at
the Vimy monument which
was attended by about 4,000
Canadian students.

The English Department
is excited to announce the
upcoming release of the Saint

should hit newsstands in early
May. This year’s promotional
insert will feature the work of
Mr. Serravalle’s Grade twelve

large contingent of creative
writers is primed to showcase
the best of their poetry and
fiction at the spring Poetry
Reading. Performing to a
packed theater of peers and
teachers, this year’s Writer’s
Craft class is primed to etch
their signature on what is
becoming a bona fide literary

group of these same writers
will be attending the Niagara

last but not least, the English

ENERGY ENERGY

ENERGY ENERGY
We can’t say it enough times.
The energy programs available
at Saint Michael can lead to
one of the most sought after
and lucrative areas of study in
the upcoming years. Ontario
has an aging power distribution
structure in place. The CEO
of Hydro One recently stated
that Ontario will be updating
as much as 80% of their power
grid over the next 20 years.
Energy and its consumption
has the biggest impact on our
daily lives. Ontario is looking at
a shortage of qualified people
in this area. Where are we
going to be without the right
people to help bring to us the
future energy demands of our
province. Along with all this is
the Provincial Green Energy
Act which is placing additional
pressure on the province
to meet the green energy
requirements as set out by this
provincial decree. TO BE IN
ENGERY is not the question
but the answer. Take time to
learn more about our Energy
Specialis High Skills Major
programs. Take time to help
your child properly prepare for
the future.
BUSINESS
Did you know that each
year universities are offering
more and more dual degree
programs at their institutions.
For example, several
universities are offering
engineering and business
adminstrative degrees to their
graduates through special
dual degree programs. The
importance of having a good
knowledge base in business
studies in the workplace has
driven these dual degree
programs. Use business
studies at Saint Michael to
have your child get an early
jump on the types of programs
that matter the most in their
future. Business studies will
not only prepare them for post
secondary studies but also help
them make informed financial
choices in their lives.

Swimming
OFSAA Swimeers Jason Mackay, Simone Waller, Stephen Nicholls
This year is the first year, since
the Saint Michael Swim Team’s
induction, that any of our
Mustang swimmers advanced
to OFSAA. Not one but three
of our swimmers competed
at the event which took place
at the Milton Sports complex
on March 6th. Simone Waller
competed in the 100 Breast,
Jason Mackay competed in the
50 Breaststroke and Stephen
Nicholls competed in the 50
Butterfly and the 50 Freestyle.
All of our swimmers showed
determination and all strived
for personal bests. Congratulations goes out to all of our
swimmers, we are so proud of
you! Mr. Mills and Mrs. Connor
look forward to another great
season next year and welcome
any new swimmers!
Girl’s Rugby
The Girl’sRugby team played
their first tournamnent of the
year. The season had an impressive start to it as the team
drubbed their cross town rivals
Saint Paul by a score of 29 - 0.
They went on to beat a tough
Lakeshore team in the next
game and looked good all day
with exceptional efforts by all.
Coaches Mr. and Mrs. Carter
are pleased with the start and
hope to see the success continue throughout regular season
play. Way to go Girls!
