Term 1, Week 2
8th February, 2012
Dear Parents,
Welcome everyone to the start of 2012. It is great to see the new families here at the school. Even though it
has been a damp start to the year, it has been a wonderful beginning for everyone especially our new kinders.
During the holidays my wife and I went to New Zealand. Having never been to New Zealand, we were certainly
impressed by the people. They were warm, helpful and very friendly. It is amazing how much more you enjoy a
place when people are so kind and friendly. We came to a place called “Port Chalmers” on the South Island – the
industrial port for Dunedin. Walking around the shops in Port Chalmers, I saw something in the window that
caught my eye; it was a post card for sale. This post card was a print of a painting of Mary MacKillop who
visited Port Chalmers in 1898. I went in and asked for more information, well didn’t that start something! The
lady in charge of the promotion of Mary MacKillop in Port Chalmers – Mrs Caroline Meikle, not only answered my
questions but also closed the shop and took me for a drive to see the St Joseph primary school and church. I
met the principal, walked around the school and through the Church. She also gave me a large print of the
painting she commissioned for Port Chalmers. The original school was called St Marys School and opened in
1882. In 1898 Mary MacKillop and her sisters renamed the school as St Joseph’s. The current school numbers
are increasing nicely with the total school enrolment of 55. This was a moment of grace for me. There are
moments of grace happening everywhere in our lives, we just need to keep our eyes open and look.
Bishop Anthony has started a new initiative for the Diocese: - “Faith in our Future”. It is the planning together
for the Diocese’s future.
How can we serve families better as a church, build a true sense of belonging and equip people for Catholic life
in the 21st Century? How might we better support our schools and parishes and better meet the needs of our
people, especially our children and future generations?
Bishop Anthony Fisher OP invites you to share your vision, suggestions and ideas as we plan for the years ahead
in the Diocese of Parramatta. For information about the consultation event taking place near you, or to have
your say online, visit www.faithinourfuture.org.au.
Recently a case of tinea was reported to the school. I thought it was timely to put out some information that
will help parents with children who may have this relatively common infection. The treatment includes
antifungal medication and good hygiene.
Tinea is a fungal infection that can infect the skin. Commonly affected areas include the feet (athlete's foot),
scalp and other areas that get sweaty. Tinea is contagious and can be spread by skin-to-skin contact or
indirectly. It is also known as ringworm, although no worm is involved.
How to avoid infection
Overheating and perspiration contribute to tinea infections. Suggestions to avoid tinea infection include:
After washing, dry the skin thoroughly, particularly between the toes and within skin folds. Expose the skin to
the air as much as possible. Wear cotton socks instead of synthetics. Use antiperspirants to control excessive
perspiration (sweating).
Wear thongs to swimming pools, locker rooms, gyms and other communal areas.

Next Wednesday 15th February, at 9:00am there will be the Parents and Friends (P&F), Annual General Meeting
(AGM). This will be held in the resource room near the Year 6 learning space.
Uniform proposed changes – There will be 2 meetings to further discuss the proposed uniform changes – Monday
20th February at 9:00am in the school library and Tuesday evening 21st February from 7:00pm in the school library.
These 2 meetings will be a discussion time only. Later this term a survey will be distributed for all parents to
choose and comment. Please come along to share your views.
This Friday we will be celebrating our Beginning School Liturgy. You are most welcome to attend. The Year 6
children in leadership roles will receive their badges.
Last Friday I sent home details about our parking and Kiss and Drop procedures. Thank you for your co-operation. I
do ask that the block of units opposite the school is not used by school parents as a round-a-bout. We should not
drive into this property unless we are a guest of one of the residents.

Congratulations to EJ Brown-Vaelua 6O who won the
“Citizenship Award” for 2011.
He was presented with this
award at the end of last year.
Congratulations also to Chloe-Anne
Cortes Of 6O who came 2nd placing
overall in an International Gymnastics
Competition.
Qualifying for her first ever
international gymnastics competition,
after a tough year of local, State and
National competitions in 2011, ChloeAnne did herself, her family and the
Penrith City YMCA gymnastics club
proud by placing 2nd overall in the 36th
Annual Aloha Gymfest in Hawaii for
Level 4 (10 yrs+).
The Aloha Gymfest 2012 had over 350
individual competitors and teams from
6 different countries, America,
Australia, Japan and Russia to name a
few.
The training for such a competition meant that Chloe-Anne
had to learn new routines (for the Balance Beam, Uneven
Bars, Floor and Vault apparatus).
PRAYERS
Please keep the Reddy family in your thoughts and prayers.
Jay Reddy’s (1L) Aunty passed away last Wednesday.
REC CORNER
ST JOHN BOSCO
Last week (31st January) we celebrated the feast of St John Bosco the founder of the Salesian order. During
this time we remember in prayer and thanksgiving the many Salesian priests, brothers and sisters we are
blessed to have working beside us in this parish.
We remember in a particular way our Parish Priest Fr Brendan Murphy, Assistant Priests Fr Guy Riolo and Fr
Jerry Brean and Salesian Rector Fr Shane Reade. With their continued guidance and good example may we
live our lives like St John Bosco, in serving the Lord in the good choices we make each day and the love and
care we show to others.
BEGINNING SCHOOL LITURGY
When: Friday 10th February.
Time: 11.45a.m.
Venue: OLR Church
You are invited to the Beginning School Liturgy next Friday.
We look forward to sharing this important liturgical celebration with you. As you know it is at this time that we
welcome all new members of staff and new students to our school, especially our new Kindergarten students.
At this liturgy we also call forth our new Student Leaders to receive their badges as a reflection of their being
called forth to lead by example within this community.
We look forward to celebrating the beginning of another school year as we give thanks and listen to the Word of
God as we reflect on the many challenges and joys the year offers each of us.

Two Parent Information evenings are being offered by the parish in February.

Last year parents returned forms as an expression of interest in the Confirmation Program. This was not an
application form.
Now is the time to complete an application for enrolment and hear from the Parish Priest, Fr Brendan Murphy
present information and clarify expectations about receiving the sacrament of Confirmation.
When: Tuesday 14th February or Thursday 16th February.
Where: In the Parish Church.

STUDENT BANKING
The School Banking Program includes an
exciting Rewards Program designed to
encourage children to get into the habit of
making regular savings. Every time your
child makes a deposit at school they
receive a silver coloured Dollarmites token. The first token will be received upon the first deposit at school. Once
your child has individually saved 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive Dollarmites reward item. Students
will have lots of fun saving their tokens for these cool rewards items.
School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. The school receives $5 when children make their first deposit
at school and a commission on every deposit made through the School Banking Program.
Taking part in School Banking is easy.
•
If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They
just need to bring their deposit in every Thursday for processing on Friday using their Dollarmites deposit
wallet. If you child has misplaced their Dollarmites deposit book or deposit wallet, they can request a new one
from either the local branch or contact Mrs Grech.
•
If you child does not have a Youthsaver account, you can open one at any Commonwealth Bank Branch, no forms
to fill in! Alternatively, if you are an existing Commonwealth Bank customer with access to Net bank you can apply online. Another option is to download a paper-based application form from commbank.com.au/schoolbanking.
Please note this option may take up to 2 weeks before a Dollarmites wallet and deposit book is sent to your home
address to start banking at school.
