Well, Shut My Mouth!
Have you ever said anything and then
wished you had not? Obviously we all have experienced that terrible feeling of regret when a
word is “carelessly” spoken. I’ll never forget on
one occasion, sitting in a restaurant in Birmingham and talking negatively with some of my
minister buddies about a professor I had in college. Suddenly, I felt a hand on my shoulder and
I turned to realize that the president of the college was seated right behind me! Needless to
say it was an awkward moment.
There is a reason God gave us two ears
and one mouth. My friend, Gil Barrow once said
to me, “I never learned anything while talking.” I
found his statement to be very wise. Speaking
may be easier than listening but knowledge and
understanding will come from remaining quiet
and paying attention.
In Proverbs 17:28 we read, “Even a fool
who keeps silent is considered wise; when he
closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.” So, for
me it is my goal in 2013 to develop the art of listening rather than expanding my gift of gab. After all, a shut mouth gathers no feet!
