Telenovelas, also known as soap-operas, is a kind of television drama from Latin America.
Telenovelas, a made-up expression composed of TV (television) and novelas (novel). Telenovelas are single seasonned soap-operas
which are daily broadcasted on a 6 months to 1 year period. They are produced in Spanish or Portuguese.
They mix romance and drama and are punctuated by recurrent happenings. To sum up telenovelas identity in a few words:
love, fame, beauty, money, lies, betrayal.
Telenovelas are extremely popular in Latin America but are also exported worldwide. They are highly appreciated in Africa.
Telemundo in fact launched its Telemundo channel on DSTV Africa in 2013.
The largest producers of telenovelas in the world are: Televisa (Mexico), TV Azteca (Mexico), Rede Globo (Brazil), Telefe (Argentina),
RCN (Colombia), Venevision (Venezuela), Telemundo (United States).
Each year, more than 500 telenovelas are produced for a global audience of 2 billion viewers.
In terms of production budget, telenovelas function more like Hollywood movies than American soap operas.
In Brazil, some telenovelas such as “Avenida Brasil” attract an average of 40 million viewers for each episode. Furthermore,
“Avenida Brasil” has been exported to 124 countries and has generated advertising incomes of over a billion dollars.
