O Camiño dos Faros that runs through loads of
different landscapes always looking at the sea
towards the West. Lighthouses, beaches, dunes,
rivers, cliffs, forests, estuaries with a great variety
of birds, castros, dolmens, fishing villages,
viewpoints from where to enjoy how the sea
breaks in all ways possible, sunsets and so on. A
hiking route different from the others that will
take the hiker to a world full of unique sensations
only enjoyable in this Costa da Morte.
O Camiño dos Faros, as we have designed it,is
divided in 8 stages. Each stage takes 9 hours on
average by using the so-called pace of the
Trasnos, a pace that implies to stop in every
landmark to take photos, to have something to
eat and drink and enjoy the route all day long.
The route is classed of medium difficulty level, although we believe that it is accessible to everyone because of the slow
pace we propose.
It is a route along the coastline, which does not mean that it is a route along the beach. This coast is known as being really
rough. You can be walking around some cliffs and suddenly you are going up a 100-meter mountain. The whole route has a
4,000-meter ascent and 4,000-meter descent.

STAGES
Stage 1
Malpica - Niñóns
Level:
Medium
The first stage starts at the lighthouse in the port in Malpica and goes
along this beautiful fishing village: the port, its streets, the promenade and
the beach Area Maior to go on towards Saint Adrián. Before reaching the
chapel, we walk by the beach Seaia and the fountains of the Romeros
(people who take part in pilgrimage), where we can get some water.
From Saint Adrian, we can enjoy an awesome view of Malpica and of the
SisargasIslands. We will see these islands from the so-called path of the
fishermen which leads us to Beo, walking through the first cliffs of this
Camiño dos Faros.
From Beo, that is a stop to have something to eat and drink, we go on with the route towards Seiruga, where we will have
to take off our boots, to pull up our trousers till the knee to go through a river. Then, we will walk along the beach Seiruga
and we will arrive at Brizo, where we will walk along the beach before going up through a stream towards Punta Nariga.
When being up the stream, we have to take the dirty track on the right and a path which will lead us to the windpark that
we will walk through. Then, we will walk down a path till we reach the road of Nariga and, from there to the lighthouse
Punta Nariga, built by César Portela. There are both a complicate ascent and a downhill to the beach Niñóns walking by a
cliff-lined area where you are told to finish the stage at that point.
Stage 2
Niñóns - Ponteceso
Level:
High
This second stage is kind of long with 29 kms from Niñóns to Ponteceso. It
starts in the beach of Niñóns, walking along the coast till the Port of Santa
Mariña. It is from this point from where we will start the most demanding
and complicate ascent of the day reaching the “Virxe Do Faro” (the Virgin
of the Lighthouse), from where we can enjoy some breathtaking views of
the following stages. The furthest point we can see is the dune of MountBranco, in Camariñas, that is the half way of O Camiño dos Faros.
From the MountFaros, we will descend to walk along the path that is parallel to the Beach of Barda, which will lead us
close to the Windpower farm by taking the highlands of Corme. It is in this farm where we can see the petroglyphs of
Petón da Campaíña. From there, the an unpaved road will lead us to the village of O Roncudo, to, later, descend from the
wind farm till the lighthouse Roncudo, which is another of the landmarks in our route. It is there where we can see the
rocks from where the “percebeiros” (people who hunt barnacles) risk their lives to get such a delicacy.
From there we get into the estuary. We walk along the fishing port in Corme and we leave it to head towards the beach
Valarés, walking along the beaches Osmo, Hermida and Rio Covo. When leaving the beach of Rio Covo, we will head
towards a broad forest track over the estuary that leads us to the mountFacha and to Valarés, where we can stop to enjoy
its beach and pine forest.
The end of the stage along MountBranco is amazing. The coastline takes us close to the river mouth of Anllóns, with a
privileged view of the TiñosaIsland, all the dunes and the beach of Barra. We will descend to walk along this unique
kilometer, as it seems to be part of a desert, in the middle of the bay of Insua, a spot popular for its importance ornithological.
From there we will walk along the boardwalk in Ponteceso that divides the croplands till we reach the bridge in Ponteceso,
in front of the house of Eduardo Pondal.
O Camiño dos Faros
7
Stage 3
Ponteceso - Laxe
Level:
Low
The 3rd stage of O Camiño dos Faros takes us along the coast and to the
inland of Cabana to finish in Laxe.
The 1st kilometer goes along the hard shoulder of the main road that we
walk across by taking a crossing point on our right to get to the Bay
Insua and walk along its pinegroves till Neaño and the beach Urixeira.
From there, a 3-km walk starts till O Lodeiro where we can still watch a
great amount of birds that have their habitat in this estuary of the River
Anllóns.
At the end of this walk, when reaching As Grelas, we walk towards the inland by taking a very hard ascent following the
route of “Rego dos Muíños” till the Castro A Cibda and the Dolmen Dombate, two amazing archeological pieces in A Costa
da Morte.
From Dombate we go towards the coast again, turning off in Fontefría to ascend to the Castle of Lourido, which is the
summit of this Camiño dos Faros with 312 meters high. From there we can enjoy the most amazing views of the “Ría of
Corme and Laxe”.
From this summit, we descend across Canduas towards the Beach Area das Vacas, which we will never reach as we take a
crossing point that takes us across the pine yards and eucalyptus to the Rebordelo beach, where we suggest having a
stopover.
The last part of this stage takes us to Punta do Cabalo, from where we can see Laxe kind of close. We will reach Laxe by
walking along its beach and promenade till the village square, which is the end of this 3rd stage of O Camiño dos Faros.
Stage 4
Laxe - Arou
Level:
Low
This 4th stage takes us closer to the heart of A Costa da Morte. This
stage starts in Laxe visiting the port and the Church of Santa María of
Atalaya to go on till the lighthouse by taking the Route of Insua. From
the lighthouse we have a big panoramic view of the estuary of Corme
and Laxe and we can also see all the route we will have to do till
Camelle.
Close to the lighthouse we will enjoy 2 wonders of the nature: “A Furna
de la Espuma” and “La Playa de los Cristales” (the so called Beach of
pieces of glass). From this point, we will start the route that will take us
to the Rock of Soesto, with awesome views of all the Route of Insa and
of the beach of Soesto.
In Soesto, we will make the first stop to get some foodstuff before walking across the Rock Catasol and the beach Arnado
to get to the beach and the Lagoon Traba where we can watch a great amount of bird species.
From Mordomo, at the end of the beach Traba, we can take a path that will take us to another amazing landscape of this
Camiño dos Faros. All this part of the coast leading to Camelle takes us to the fairytale Lilliput in the world of huge rocks.
Rocks and stones of all shapes and sizes form another unique landscape in this Camiño dos Faros till we get to the cove of
Sabadelle, and old whaling port.
Camelle is one of the outstanding parts of this route. We get into its beach and small port to get to the pier where we can
see the remains of the “Museo de Man” (the museum created by a German man who was known as Man). From this point,
the end of this stage takes us to small paths along the coast till Arou, where this short but intense 4th stage ends.
O Camiño dos Faros
8
Stage 5
Arou - Camariñas
Level:
Medium
O Camiño dos Faros gets people hooked. If you have reached this stage,
you have that feeling more than clear. If there is any doubt left, this is the
stage that includes one of the best hiking-trails that you have ever done,
on a coast that is extremely rugged and full of history.
The part of the coast that goes from Arou to CapeVilán is the beginning of
everything. Some wrecks suffered from vessels belonging to the British
Navy at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th
century, with loads of casualties in the Serpent were the reason why this
coast is called A Costa da Morte (the coast of the death).
Along the route, we are going to have evidences of such a name. Hundreds of “ killer restingas” (straight spit of land
extending towards the sea) get into the sea that never lets up, a sea that doesn´t understand only works…
We left Arou early in the morning and we went to the viewpoint in Lobeiras by walking along the bay and we stopped by
also on the beach Lobeiras. From there, by walking along a path full of gorse bushes we walk along the “coídos” (small
coves full of ball-shaped stones) in the middle of a unique landscape, till we get to the port Santa Mariña that we will go
across to ascend the dune in MountBlanco. Once again, when we get to the summit we will enjoy some amazing views of
O Camiño dos Faros with the dune, the beach Trece (“thirteen”), all the Point Boi and the Cemetery of the English.
We are in the middle of O Camiño dos Faros, 100 kilometers already done, 100 kilometers still left, but from this point
what we feel is that we are in the heart of the route.
When descending, we go across small and isolated coves from the beach Trece till Point Boi. At this point the sea hits the
coast with strength and we can see the Cemetery of the English, where the casualties of the Serpent are buried. In the
foreground we can see CapeVilán, although we will need two hours to get there.
Stage 6
Camariñas - Muxía
oak and the Towers of Cereixo.
Level:
Medium
The beginning of this stage, that will take us along the Bay of Basa and the
mouth of the Río Grande, shows us again the different landscapes this
Camiño dos Faros contains. We can see shellfish farmers working in this
calm sea, which is rich in shellfish, especially cockles, when the tide is low
among flocks of egrets and some other birds that look for shelter and food
in this area. When we reach the beach Ariño, we cannot access the upper
river Grande along its banks. We have to get the road to go across Tasaraño, Dor, Allo, and get to the bridge Porto, where we will go across all the
river walk heading to Cereixo. There, in just a small surface, we can enjoy
an amazing walk seeing a tide mill, the church Santiago, and an impressive
From that point, the route gets harder till we get to the beach Lago. We have to walk along the road till we turn off along
a forest heading the beach Area Grande. We will descend to it to arrive again at the mouth of the river Grande. We will
walk across the beach and ascend along the pine grove to reach the beach Leís, that we will also walk across but in this
case being very careful as there are a lot of rocks to get at the lighthouse of the beach Lago, a place where we will enjoy a
deserved bath and rest, before facing the second part of this long stage. If you decide to divide the stage in two parts, the
beach Lago is the best place to finish. We leave the beach Lago by walking along the road under the bridge and we take a
small path on the right that will take us close to Merexo. We will walk along this path that goes across the center of the
village with panoramic views of its small bay. From that point we head to Os Muíños where we will do the beautiful route
of the mills belonging to the river Negro, a group of mills that have been rehabilitated that connect a 1,500-meter stretch
with the beach. At the end of this route we see the beach Os Muíños, one of the most visited of the area, that we have to
walk till the end by taking a steep hill leading to Chorente. Right here there is the possibility of going to the Monastery of
Moraime and from there connect with Chorente via El Camino de Santiago (“The Way of Saint James”).
From Chorente, the route takes us along the forest of Chorente and the point with the same name from where we can see
Muxía, known as the wind´s girlfriend, which we will reach after walking along the beaches Espiñeirido and A Cruz. We
will walk along Muxía towards the Church Santa María to reach the summit of the MountCorpiño from its bell tower to
enjoy another amazing view of this Camiño dos Faros. From that point, we descend towards la Punta da Barca with the
lighthouse, the sanctuary of “A Virxen da Barca” and all its stones that make of this place a magical place. If the weather
conditions are good, we suggest you reaching this place before the nightfall to enjoy one of the most amazing sunsets in
A Costa da Morte. But the stage doesn´t finish here, there is 1 kilometer left along which we will walk along the Eastern
side of Muxía from the monument devoted to the volunteers to the beach O Coido, the ground zero of the tragedy of the
Prestige and the last part of this 6th stage of O Camiño dos Faros.
O Camiño dos Faros
9
Stage 7
Muxía - Nemiña
Level:
High
This penultimate stage is the most demanding one of this Camiño dos
Faros, mainly at the beginning, along the 10 kilometers from Lourido to
Moreira with loads of ascents and descents.
We leave Muxía across O Coído and we walk across the beach of Lourido
till we reach the Coído da Agra. From this point we start ascending to the
MountCachelmo (750 meters up from 0 to 150 meters, with an average
gradient of 23%). Up there, in the mountCachelmo we enjoy amazing
views of Muxía with Vilán in the foreground, and of Point Buitra with
Touriñán.
From that spot, we start a kind of difficult descent that will take us to the beach of Arnela. From this beach, we will ascend
to the track that takes us to the end of Point Buitra and to the summit of the mount with the same name, from which we
see the panoramic view of the rest of the stage, with Cuño, O Pedrouzo, Moreira, and all the peninsula that forms the
CapeTouriñán.
We choose a place somehow near the antenna that is in Point Buitra to start a descent to the Coído do Cuño whose last
stream is a good place to have something to eat and drink and SPA.
From Cuño, we start the ascent to the 264-meter MountPedrouzo (2 kilometers ascending with an average gradient of
13%). When we get to the top and after a rest that we actually deserve, we start the descent to the beach Moreira that is
also very technique, with a rugged land and an average gradient in some stretches of 25%.
When we get to the beach Moreira, the stage starts being less difficult in this second part. From Moreira a dirty track takes
us to Touriñán. We will arrive there by getting the right side to the lighthouse of Touriñán, the westernmost point of this
Camiño dos Faros, and on many days, where the sun sets the last in Europe.
In the last part of this stage, we will walk along Insua and the Coído de Touriñán to get to the Mirador. There is a road at
this point that will take us close to the beach Nemiña, walking across the village Talón. It is the beach Nemiña, the penultimate stage.
Etapa 8 Nemiña - Finisterre
Level:
High
The last stage of this Camiño dos Faros is quite long, that´s why we
suggest starting it kind of early. The stage starts on the beach Nemiña,
walking along all then sand till we reach to the mouth of the estuary of
Lires. On the other side, the beach of Lires the one we will reach following
our Camiño dos Faros. We have to options to get to it: Walk across or
border it. O Camiño dos Faros takes always the worst route, that´s why it
heads up the river to walk over the bridge of Vaosilveiro and reach, by
walking across the village of Lires, the beach with the same name after
walking 3 kilometers. We can save all this walk by walking across the ría,
but this is only possible a couple of hours every summer. During the
raining season it is impossible as a channel is formed. From this point, the stages starts being demanding all along the
coast of Lires with a steep ascent leading to the awesome cliffs of Point Besugueira and of Mexadoira, that we will walk
across one of these amazing landscapes O Camiño dos Faros provides us with.
The next point in this route is the beach of Rostro (“face”). We will walk across the beach listening the continuous noise
the waves make overwhelming everything surrounds us. At the end of the beach, we will ascend by taking a small path till
the Point of Rostro, where we can admire some amazing views and it is a very good place to have something to eat and
drink. As soon as we leave behind the beach of Rostro and after turning over ourselves we see another unique landscape
of this Camiño dos Faros. The cliffs formed by the Point of Rostro and the Point of the Castelo that we will go across
walking along its highest parts, which will make us remember that the Casón hit against them making its inhabitants
leave the area as it had never happened before. There, in Point Castelo, we visit the remains of the Castro de Castromiñán
although we can only see its exterior walls and from this point we can see the end of this stage: The cape of the Nave. In
order to reach it, we have to turn off a bit towards the inland and go across the villages of Castromiñán and Denle before
reaching the beach of the Arnela and start the ascent. O Camiño dos Faros continues in crescendo and this stretch of Cape
of the Nave is one of the most amazing ones. From the track that borders the beach of Arnela, we start the ascent that will
take us to the antennas of Cape of the Nave by taking a track among the rocks with the highest cliffs in our route. When
reaching the end, we take a rest we deserve before facing the end: the last descend, the last beach, the last mount before
getting to the Lighthouse of Fisterra, our goal. From the cape of the Nave and walking down a very steep descent we
reach the beach of Mar de Fora and from the picnic area we ascend looking for the Camiño da Insua, that will take as close
to the Mount Facho, where the last ascent is the last great and fascinating effort. Ascending without stopping, we reach to
the Western part of the Cape, and from that point we start the last slope which is actually very steep and very stony before
admiring the first views of the lighthouse Fisterra, the one we reach by taking a route that is completely different from the
others: O Camiño dos Faros.
