Seeing America at Ten Miles an Hour Brings
Together Team of Wounded Warriors
For Immediate Release
San Francisco, California, May 25, 2012: For two months beginning May 28, 14 disabled
veterans will cross America by bicycle, hand cycle and recumbent, learning about the country
for which they stood tall to defend. Meeting Americans of all walks of life in 14 states and
the District of Columbia as they cross through cities both large and small, the team is
undertaking a life-changing challenge that will stay with them for the remainder of their lives.
Presented by State Farm, the 2012 Sea to Shining Sea ride from World T.E.A.M. Sports
brings together veterans from all branches of military service for the nearly 4,000 mile crosscountry ride. These wounded warriors participated in wars and conflicts from Vietnam to
Bosnia to the Gulf War to Afghanistan and Iraq. Through their service, many of these
veterans received injuries ranging from amputations to blindness to Post Traumatic Stress.
Others experienced life-threatening illnesses such as cancer.
With strong corporate and private support, the team will cycle together across deserts,
mountains, grasslands, cities and woodlands as they see America at ten miles an hour. Like
their forefathers who crossed the continent before the transcontinental railroad, automobiles
and airplanes, these veterans will experience America minute by minute, mile by mile.
Leaving San Francisco on Memorial Day morning, the team will arrive in St. Louis in time
for the city’s Independence Day celebration, and then reach the east coast of Virginia by July
28. Through the miles, the team will bond together, as will the thousands of Americans who
will follow the ride’s progress online.
The 2012 Sea to Shining Sea ride is supported through generous sponsorships by State
Farm, American Portfolios, MWV, Dominion, the Semper Fi Foundation, the USO, BNY –
Mellon, General Electric, GM Fleet and Commercial, Brown Shoe Company and Famous
Footwear, Energizer Holdings, Altria, EnerSys, Occidental Petroleum, Magaschoni Apparel,
Penske Truck Rental, AR Capital, Vedder Price, the El Pomar Foundation and George
Puskar.

About World T.E.A.M. Sports
For more than 20 years, the non-profit World T.E.A.M. Sports has used athletics to challenge disabled and
non-disabled men, women and children to accomplish goals they never thought possible. At all our events –
whether mountain climbing, biking, white water rafting or many other sports – four things always happen: (1)
Disabled participants build self confidence and physical fitness; (2) The disabled provide a role model for other
disabled citizens, encouraging them to take up athletic activities; (3) The disabled provide a moving inspiration to
other participants and to spectators when they see disabled individuals can reach goals and meet challenges
beyond anyone’s imagination; (4) The disabled and non-disabled participants become a team, working together to
overcome those challenges. Among the successful events is the annual Face of America bicycle ride in Maryland
and the Adventure TEAM Challenge in Colorado. World T.E.A.M. Sports changes lives. Contact: Richard

Riding Cross Country in Honor of Wounded Warriors
Changing Lives through Sports
The 2012 Sea to Shining Sea, from World T.E.A.M. Sports and sponsored by State Farm, honors and engages disabled persons across the United
States with an epic North American cross-country bicycle ride. A two month, 4,000 mile journey from San Francisco to Virginia Beach, Virginia, the
ride crosses America with able bodied and disabled athletes, including honored wounded warriors.
This inspiring ride is an opportunity to welcome wounded warriors and able-bodied men and women as teammates in a challenging outdoor
sporting event. In its second edition, sponsorship funds raised through the 2012 Sea to Shining Sea will pay for participating athlete transportation,
hotels, food and support, and create a safe ride experience for all participants. Excess funds following the ride’s conclusion will be dedicated to
future World T.E.A.M. Sports events for wounded warriors and able bodied participants, including the popular Face of America Ride each April and
the Adventure TEAM Challenge in Colorado in May.
The 2012 Sea to Shining Sea begins with a kick off dinner and ceremonies on Sunday, May 27 in San Francisco. The following morning, the disabled
and able-bodied riders will gather at the sandy beach of the Pacific Ocean and begin their extended journey east. Across mountains, deserts, plains,
farmland and forests, cities and towns both large and small, the riders will continue east until they reach the waters of the Atlantic Ocean at
Virginia Beach, Virginia on July 28. Throughout their cross-country journey, local citizens will come out in support and to encourage the riders.
Along the route, rest stops at local firehouses, schools and community centers, as well as some of America’s scenic natural attractions, provide an
opportunity for personal interaction with the participants.

“The World T.E.A.M. Sports Sea to Shining Sea ride symbolized for me facing the impossible, which many of us on the
team could relate to in our lives. As the miles passed, the ‘impossible’ became the ‘very possible’ and the focus
switched from changing our lives to changing the lives of others.”
- Kevin Sullivan, US Air Force (Ret), Sea to Shining Sea participant.

Sea to Shining Sea 2012
Riding Cross Country in Honor of Wounded Warriors
Changing Lives through Sports
Our Ride Participants
Jeff Henson
US ARMY
A Heflin AL resident, Jeff Henson lives with his wife, two daughters and his five and a half year old yellow Labrador
retriever, Chauncey. A part of Jeff’s life for four years, Chauncey is the hardest thing Jeff is leaving behind as he
undertakes his cross-country journey as a member of the Sea to Shining Sea 2012 ride.
Jeff reports he is very toned for the two month ride.
He has ridden the coast of France with the nonprofit Ride 2 Recovery, and has spent many hours
on the Chief Ladiga and Silver Comet Trails that lead
90 miles along former railroad grades from Georgia
to Alabama. According to Jeff, the ride from
Alabama to Atlanta is a pretty wild ride. Jeff also
rides with his church group every Tuesday night.
Physically active in running, cycling and triathlons,
Jeff has participated in World TEAM Sports’ Face of
America ride in 2010 and 2011, and the Coastal
Team Challenge in 2009. He also has participated in
events such as the San Diego Triathlon, the Los
Angeles Marathon, the Bataan Death March and the
Marine Corps Marathon.
One of Jeff’s daughters has gone to college to work in the field of assisting the visually impaired. Jeff’s vision has
suffered greatly from the effects of arthritis. He has had numerous surgeries on his eyes as a result of this condition.
During his career in the Army, Jeff served as a demolition specialist. It was during his career that he noticed his sight was
beginning to fail.
World TEAM Sports’ former CEO Jeff Messner and current director Lon Dolber have been an inspiration for Jeff’s
participation in the 2012 Sea to Shining Sea ride. Jeff wants to dedicate his ride to his mother, father and family,
particularly his Uncle Stell Herrin, who is 68 years young. Stell used to be very active when he was younger, but is now
suffering from arthritis of his joints. Jeff relates very well to his uncle’s challenges, as his eyesight has been impaired as
well by this same disease.
Michael Manning
USMC
Michael Manning graduated from high school in 1996 in Mobile AL, near the Gulf of Mexico. This was an ideal location
for Michael to grow up, as even in the middle of winter, he could spend time catching bass and having fun on the beach.
Living now in Dixon TN, Michael moved north, near Nashville, to be close to
his wife’s family. He is the only male in his household, living with six women
- his wife, four stepdaughters and his eight-year-old daughter. His family
plans to drive to meet him and the team during the Sea to Shining Sea ride’s
two-day rest in St. Louis in early July.
Michael looks forward to his participation in the Sea to Shining Sea. Having
completed the Gulf Coast Challenge with the non-profit Ride 2 Recovery, he
feels he is ready to take on something even bigger.
Following his return from Iraq in 2003, he struggled for seven years with a
variety of mental health issues. In March 2010, he accepted admission into a
VA hospital for six weeks of rehabilitation.
A high school friend, Thomas Ederette, serves as Michael’s mentor. Thomas
came across the country to see and support Michael when he was in the VA
hospital, as soon as he learned of his difficulties. He showed up with a
Popsicle and a solution. Because of their long friendship, Thomas convinced
Michael he could still do anything he wanted, just as he did when he was young.
Thomas told Michael that he started working at a bicycle shop, which encouraged him to start riding. He wanted
Michael to understand the freedom one feels and gets while riding. Thomas knew in his heart that riding would pull his
friend through any challenges, both physical and mental.
Michael listened to his friend’s advice, and started bicycling. He now understands what Thomas told him about freedom
as he rides and enjoys the outdoors, as he did when young, on the Gulf Coast.
Henry Riley
US ARMY
Henry Riley lives with his wife of 30 years in Fayetteville NC. A member of the US Army’s Warrior Transition Battalion at
Ft. Bragg, Henry notes that he will be medically retired after 28 years of active and National Guard duty while on the Sea
to Shining Sea ride, while the team rides through eastern Kansas.
Excited to participate in the two month ride from coast to coast, Henry heard about it from his social worker. His social
worker in turn had learned of the ride from Kevin Sullivan, a 2010 participant who is doing his clinical rotations for
Physician Assistant studies at Womack Army Medical Center.
Henry recalls that his wife and he bought mountain
bikes for their 30th wedding anniversary in July 2011.
Since purchasing the bikes, he has found riding to
instrumental in his recovery from esophageal cancer.
At first, he found he could barely ride three miles a
day, as he recovered from several treatments for his
cancer. However, as his strength and endurance
returned, he was able to lengthen his rides.
Reporting that his wife has been his “pillar of
strength” through his treatments and recovery, Henry
also reports that the Army medical care has been
first-rate. His team is “incredible,” he says, and
credits them with saving his life.
Henry says that his participation in the 2012 Sea to
Shining Sea ride is a life-changing opportunity for
him. He has purchased a new road bike for the journey and has been training extensively.
Michael Sanders
US AIR FORCE
Michael "Mike" Sanders is a Senior Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force and is based in what he calls “God’s
country,” Eagle River AK. His last duty day was April 20, 2012 as he left the Alaskan Command as the Superintendent,
Operations Directorate on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. Michael and his
family have served our nation in 11 different assignments. He has been
decorated with the Defense Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf
cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Joint
Service Commendation Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal with two
oak leaf clusters, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Air Force
Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Good Conduct
Medal with six oak leaf clusters, the National Defense Service Medal with
star, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Global War on
Terrorism Service Medal.
His final official temporary duty was to compete at the 2012 Warrior Games
in Colorado Springs CO, for the Air Force where he won the Silver Medal in
recumbent cycling and the Bronze Medal in the Open Division 1500-meter
run this past May. After nearly 24 years of service to his country, he will
retire from active duty in September 2012.
Sports have been a part of Michael’s life since he was 16 years old. He has
participated in ten marathons including Boston, London, and New York. He
also won the 2010 Warrior Games Gold Medal in recumbent cycling. This
achievement encouraged him to participate in two Ride 2 Recovery events.
Training for the 2012 Sea to Shining Sea Ride with World T.E.A.M. Sports
through running, spinning and cycling, Michael is ready to fulfill another
dream and make some memories. Despite the record 133+ inches of snow and cold of Alaska, he continued his training
throughout the winter. When the spring thaw finally arrived, he began cycling outside once again.
In 2007, Michael was diagnosed with Stage IV Throat Cancer. He continues to suffer from the "collateral damage" that
came with it such as scar tissue from the neck being cut open, a missing neck muscle, a hole in the throat from the
racquet ball sized tumor that was removed at the base of his tongue, over 40 lymph nodes removed, and part of the
epiglottis and right pharyngeal wall removed. As you can imagine, swallowing is a significant challenge for Michael.
Michael also went through two bouts of chemotherapy (supposed to do three but couldn't sustain it as he went from
150 lbs to 108 lbs) and now has some after effects from the it, primarily a bit of short-term memory loss, dizziness, and
fatigue. His final battle with cancer required 33 sessions of radiation directly to the neck in which he was snapped to a
table so he wouldn't move while receiving the dosage. Some of the damage sustained in this process was the "frying" of
the saliva glands and thyroid...now he chokes on his own saliva because of the way it forms and deals with
hypothyroidism. This is when he was willing to give up, especially in the last week. He was on a feeding tube and facing
many mixed emotions. The radiation and chemo caused many nights and days of throwing up and crying and he shares
that he simply wanted to throw in the towel. After the "slash and burn," phone calls from his son, Shawn (who just had
open-heart surgery), and Mom and Dad (who was diagnosed with colon cancer in the same month as Michael and
passed eight months later), and finally knowing that the Air Force was pulling for him, he knew he needed to fight;
however, he was struggling with depression and anxiety. There were days where his wife, Laurie, would curl up beside
him and just cry with him. What encouraged him the most was when his little girl, Jenna, would come in the bathroom
after he had thrown up so much and stroke his head saying "It's gonna be alright, Daddy..." That's when the battle really
began! He shares he was encouraged by so many to fight and so determined to not let it beat him, he took on the
challenge to live! With the successful radical neck dissection, chemo, radiation, and a lot of prayer, he has been cancerfree since January 2008.
Having dreamed about crossing the country by bicycle for most of his life, he greatly appreciates the opportunity to
fulfill his dream but now with a recumbent trike. Michael also wants to encourage and inspire those he meets and those
tracking him and to share with them that there are many types of wounded warriors ranging from combat-related
injuries to accidental injuries to diseases such as cancer.
Finally, Michael shares, "This ride gives me the chance to meet the citizens of the United States...I want to do that! My
family has sacrificed so much for me to serve our country, so I'm excited to meet the people we have defended for so
long. I want them to know that I'm grateful and thankful for their love and support and to also know that with God, all
things are possible!"
Jonathan Snodgrass
NH ARMY NATIONAL GUARD
Jonathan Snodgrass lives in Dover NH with his two house
cats, Babygirl and Jefferson. With the full support and
encouragement of his friends and family, he will leave his
cats behind this summer as he participates in the 2012 Sea
to Shining Sea ride.
A participant of the Wounded Warrior Project’s Soldier Ride
in Washington, D.C., Jonathan was inspired by his “brothers
and sisters” in the ride to actively pursue fitness through
bicycling. Riding his mountain bike around his Dover
neighborhood, Jonathan also uses his elliptical and
treadmill to keep in shape. Visiting his local shooting range
regularly, he maintains his shooting skills.
During his 12 years with the New Hampshire Army National Guard, he developed PTSD, which he is working to overcome
through physical activity and exercise.
Although others have on occasion told him he can’t do something, Jonathan reports he takes that declaration as
inspiration to succeed at his task. With personal determination and will power, he works until he overcomes the
challenge. Riding across the country will provide him with the opportunity to not only improve his physical fitness, but to
also spend time with other former and active duty military members.
Joe Frank
US NAVY
A terrible head-on automobile accident in 2007 turned Joe Frank’s career
in the Navy upside down. In Coronado, California for training as a Navy
Seal, the Valley Stream NY native found himself in the hospital with
numerous injuries, including a TBI, and collapsed lung.
Recovering from his accident, Joe sought physical activities as a part of
his training process. Using bicycling and then running, Joe has completed
three double century long distance bicycling events, an Ironman, several
triathlons and participated in two Wounded Warrior Games as a member
of the Navy Safe Harbor program. Since August 2011, Joe has ridden over
3,000 miles on his road bike.
For the Sea to Shining Sea, Joe is dedicating his ride to his military trainer,
Jordon Bancrost, who helped him greatly in his training. Currently a
resident of San Diego, Joe is pleased to have the opportunity to
participate in the cross-country ride and is looking forward to helping
encourage other military veterans and persons with disabilities to not
give up in their personal training challenges. “I want to do this ride for the
one’s that can’t,” he says.
Sabrina Hearst
USCG
Sabrina Hearst serves an active duty Chief Petty Officer with
the US Coast Guard. From her home in Santa Rosa, CA, Sabrina
enjoys the “simple things in life,” such as walking, reading,
cooking, gardening, and bicycling. She rides her bike to work
whenever possible, and has dreamed of someday undertaking
a cross-country adventure.
One of the able-bodied participants of the 2012 Sea to Shining
Sea ride, Sabrina finally can undertake her dream. With the
support of her family, friends, co-workers and the Coast
Guard, Sabrina will ride from San Francisco to Virginia Beach,
accompanying a team of wounded warriors from our nation’s
military. To be of service and to be helpful to these disabled
veterans will be fulfilling for her.
It’s a very personal journey for Sabrina – some of her mentors
in the Coast Guard have sacrificed their well-being in the line
of duty to their country, including Captain Ross Bell, an inspiring commanding officer, who was injured in Vietnam and
lived in pain for the remainder of his life. Her own sister Laura also inspires her. Becoming a T11 paraplegic at age 29,
Laura’s injury and chronic complications led to an early death at age 48, but not before she provided a lifetime of
inspiration and joy to her sister.
Active as a hospice patient care volunteer, Sabrina savors the simple life and notices all the natural phenomena in the
world around her, from the sound of the wind in the grass to light and shadows.
Larry Gunter
US AIR FORCE
Retired from the United States Air Force, Larry Gunter has been exercising
at the YMCA every Tuesday and Thursday faithfully. He rides his tandem
bicycle 70 miles per day when he’s not exercising. Born in Texas, but now
residing in Phenix City AL, Larry lives with his wonderful wife of 25 years.
He has two sons and two dogs at home.
When Larry asked his wife if he could cycle across the country for two
months with the Sea to Shining Sea ride, she said, “Go for three.” That is
support and then some from his family!
Larry loves the challenge, adventure and the network of people involved
with World T.E.A.M. Sports and is looking forward to his ride. For the ride,
Greg Hoffman is serving as Larry’s tandem bicycle pilot.
Larry is riding with a dedication to the best friend he has ever had, his 15year-old Seeing Eye dog, Pasha. They have traveled a long road together;
Larry and his beloved black Labrador retriever. Larry’s eyes and soul for
many years, Pasha‘s harness was worn out through constant use.
Unfortunately, her bad hips brought her suffering. After putting it off for
much too long, Larry decided to let her go in early May, allowing her to be put to sleep.
Larry will keep Pasha in his heart along with his wife, children and his two dogs, Molly and Hazel, as he makes his trek
across the country. Embarking on the cross-country Sea to Shining Sea Ride, Pasha will undoubtedly also be by his side
as the miles roll by.
James Sheehan
USMC
A veteran of the US Marine Corps, Cpl. James Sheehan is
currently living in Stillwater OK and attending school at
Oklahoma State University. With plans to moving back to
his family farm for the summer, and then transferring to a
college in Kansas City for the fall, it will be a busy summer
for the recently-retired veteran.
Leaving behind the love of his life, Laura Lee, and his twoyear-old daughter Annaleigh, James will ride the crosscountry Sea to Shining Sea ride with other wounded
warriors. The Harlan IA native notes that his entire family
supports his participation and will be cheering him on
through every mile of the journey.
A backpacker and camper, James reports he has always been in decent shape. In preparation for his lengthy journey, he
has been spending more time on his bike, increasing his workouts.
Noting it was difficult for him to leave his beloved Marine Corps upon retirement; he wants to live life to its fullest. “I
won’t let the fact that I was torn apart on some battlefield get the best of me,” he says with determination.
James feels fortunate and grateful to be provided the opportunity to ride across the United States. Though he will miss
his family, he is looking forward to the journey and to meeting new people.
Ivan Castro
US ARMY
Ivan Castro is a determined man. “I want to show my family that even though I am blind, I am still the same man I was
before, driven and determined. With their support there is nothing I/we cannot achieve.”
During his career in the Army, Ivan has been deployed to South America, Kosovo,
Albania, Bosnia and Iraq. During Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006, Ivan sustained
life-threatening injuries when he was struck with shrapnel from a mortar attack.
Despite his injuries, his motivation pushed him to become the first blind graduate
of the Maneuver Captain’s Career Course in Fort Benning GA.
Currently serving as a commander of a Special Operations Recruiting Company,
Ivan spends his days traveling for speeches and presentations, at recruiting events,
athletic competitions and mentoring newly wounded service members. Living in
the Ft. Bragg NC region, Ivan spends his free time running, cycling, working out,
traveling and working on his salsa dancing.
Leaving behind his beautiful wife, new baby girl, a son who will be graduating from
high school, and a recently-adopted black cat, Ivan reports he is looking forward to
the challenge of a cross-country ride. Such a ride has been his long-time dream.
Ivan is in good condition for the long ride, having worked out daily and participated
in numerous endurance events. He has run in 25 marathons, including the New
York and Boston Marathons. He also participated in a 400 mile bike ride across Europe and climbed the 14,000-foot
Gray’s Peak in Colorado. In 2011, he was one of two wounded warriors featured in country music star Joe Nichols’ hit
video for his song, “The Shape I’m In.”
Andrew Jansen
US AIR FORCE
An Air Force veteran, Andrew Jansen is participating in the Sea to Shining Sea ride on behalf of those who cannot. A
good friend of Andrew’s, SSgt Travis Griffin, was killed in Afghanistan in 2006. In his honor, Andrew is dedicating his ride
to Travis and to all other soldiers, sailors, and airman who “paid the ultimate sacrifice for my freedoms.”
Living in Normal IL, Andrew reports he exercises daily. Attending classes at Heartland Community College to pursue a
nuclear engineering degree, Andrew also works at the college’s veteran’s center each afternoon. Andrew volunteers
each week with Habitat for Humanity and for a local Christian organization recycling furniture for families. In addition,
he helps Sunday mornings at the local Salvation Army center to cook breakfast for 80 people, including local veterans.
“My life is about service,” said Andrew. “It was when I was on active duty. It is still, now that I'm a civilian.”
Andrew rides with fellow Sea to Shining Sea participant
John Malkin to prepare for his cross-country journey. With
Egyptian trainer Mohammed Mahomet, Andrew and John
ride mornings, evenings and on weekends.
Serving as a military Security Forces Law Enforcement
professional for four years until 2006, Andrew reports he
was seriously injured at one point, and took six months to
begin walking again. He also reports he continues to suffer
from PTSD, owing to situations his job required.
“I want to show those vets out there dealing with PTSD
and Panic Disorder that they can live not just a normal life
but an extraordinary life,” explained Andrew. “For a period
of six months, I was afraid to leave my house, when I first
started having panic attacks. I was irrationally afraid. I am still afraid every day of my life, but want to show that fear can
be overcome.”
Bill Czyzewski
US ARMY
An Army veteran who served in the Vietnam War, Bill Czyzewski was a part of the fighting Sea Bees, although he never
served on a ship. Has been deep in the jungles of Vietnam, with Alpha Troop, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry - the
famed Blackhorse Regiment. The Regiment was a specialized cavalry outfit
equipped with tanks and armored assault vehicles. Bill participated in the May 1,
1970 Operation Fish Hook, which encircled a North Vietnamese logistics center.
While in Vietnam, the regiment received its own distinctive patch and three
soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor.
Bill has been actively training for the 2012 Sea to Shining Sea ride. He rides the Jail
Trail near the West Virginia Regional Jail, 12 miles each day. On weekends, Bill
rides the Western Maryland Rail Trail, 46.1 miles long.
Starting cycling as a rehabilitation activity, Bill has a number of rides under his
belt, including Ride 2 Recovery’s Florida Challenge, the Gulf Coast Challenge from
New Orleans to Tallahassee, and the 9/11 Memorial Challenge from Jacksonville
to Tampa. Bill rode around in circle after the 9/11 ride in the parking lot, since he
wanted to keep going. Now, that’s pumped!
Bill has also participated in two Face of America rides from World T.E.A.M. Sports,
in 2011 and 2012. In 2010, he rode one stage of the Sea to Shining Sea ride with
the veterans of that ride.
Now 63 years young, Bill was married, but now lives with his seven year old black and silver German Shepard, which he
would like to include on his cross-country trip. He reports his dog often trains with him.
Bill dedicates his ride to the over 58,000 brothers and sisters on the Vietnam Memorial, the Black Wall in Washington
D.C.; to his unit, the 11th Armored Cavalry; and to every veteran who is hurting today. “Get out there, your life is not
done!” said Bill.
John Malkin
US NAVY
John Malkin served with the Navy Seabees. He was born in Neubrucke, Germany. His father was in the Army and his
mother worked for NATO as a translator during the Cold War.
Being in an Army family, John moved regularly as his
father was transferred. His life includes homes in
Alabama, Virginia, Tennessee, Kansas, and Iowa. He
currently lives in Normal IL, a city voted America’s best
singles city. It also has 27 miles of cycling and running
trails to keep fit. With his ex-wife, John shares custody
of his three children.
John’s days usually include waking at 5 a.m. to ride 20
miles, than participating in a second ride that evening
with his mentor, Doug Ohler. Doug is the 60 years
young founder of John’s bike club.
When John is not riding, he is a member of the
Abnormal Brewing Club/Company. He was voted as the
most inspiring student, owing to his decision to go back
to school for a higher education.
During his term in the service, John was severely injured, receiving multiple concussions. Following his accident, he
spent seven days in intensive care. An injury to his right frontal lobe caused amnesia, depression and sleep disorders.
Owing to his concussion injury, John sometimes forgets what he did the previous day, or where he parked his car. He has
learned to live and sometimes laugh about his memory lapses.
John learned after his injury was that there are no real recovery systems available for individuals with severe
concussions. But, with the help of some good friends, neighbors and his mentor, he is working hard to recover. Through
diet and exercise, he is taking control of his life again.
Regarding his motivation in the Sea to Shining Sea ride, John reports he is looking forward to that beer at the end of the
road!
Glenn Goulet
US ARMY
Glenn Goulet can no longer run and jump. But, he can still ride his bicycle.
Medically discharged from the Army following 7-1/2 years of service,
Glenn reports that going on rides with other veterans helps him relieve
stress and stay physically fit. The Martinsburg WV resident injured his
back while on active duty in Panama and has undergone five surgeries.
More recently, he was diagnosed with a lung ailment, which he had
noticed during his riding.
Despite his physical ailments, Glenn does not give up. During a bike ride
with the non-profit Ride 2 Recovery, Glenn met a veteran with a
prosthetic leg. Though this older veteran was having difficulties in the ride, he did not back away from the challenge.
Glenn was greatly inspired by this veteran’s determination and will power.
Riding in the Sea to Shining Sea ride will give Glenn the opportunity to meet his fellow veteran riders, and to talk and
share stories. “Knowing that I am not alone with these internal battles” will be a relief to Glenn. “I plan to show others
that being disabled does not mean that we are not able to accomplish challenges in our lives,” he said.
Greg Hoffman
Greg Hoffman is serving as the pilot for Larry Gunter. A resident of Doylestown PA, Greg reports he has been riding and
racing bicycles for over 30 years. “I've always had a passion for all forms of cycling,” he said. He is an active bicycle racer
on the road, on track and in cyclocross.
In 2011, Greg answered a post on a tandem racing forum online to serve as a
pilot for a blind stoker. “Best email I've ever written,” he recalls. Since
answering the post, Greg has been invited to participate in three Paralympic
Learn to Race Camps at the Olympic Training Centers in Colorado Springs and
in Chula Vista. “At these camps I've met some of the most amazing people
that I've ever met in my life. I developed a new level of respect and
admiration for our military personal.”
Among the blind athletes he rode with on the tandems was Larry Gunter.
“From the very beginning of camp, I was told that Larry was new to cycling
but was very trainable because of his huge desire to learn. We had a great
camp and got along famously.” When the call came that Larry was riding the
Sea to Shining Sea, Greg jumped at the opportunity.
Working as a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines for the last 14 years, Greg’s flexible schedule allows him the time to
take away from his duties to participate. “It is the greatest company and the greatest job in the world.”
Riding with wounded warriors in the Sea to Shining Sea ride, Greg reports he is “more than honored.”
William Lahman
William Lahman, riding as the tandem pilot for Ivan Castro, is originally from
the small northwestern Colorado community of Rangely. A current resident of
Colorado Springs, William reports he spent “a lot of time in the saddle, both
touring cross country fresh out of high school, and racing road and track.”
With his interest in cycling, he has served as a mechanic, coach and a number
of promotional and technical support positions for USA Cycling. In 1999, he
became involved in tandem bicycling and became involved with a rider who
was seeking a training partner for the 2000 Paralympic Team. “I thought it
would be a good way to help someone else out, and put something back into
a sport that had brought me so many great experiences and pleasure.”
Through training, William and his partner made the Paralympic Team and
competed in the Sydney Games.
“Since then, I have ridden with many blind, disabled and VI riders, as a
training partner for other Paralympians, at training camps as well as clinics
put together by the U.S. Association of Blind Athletes (USABA) and others,” reports William. He connected with Ivan
Castro when Ivan attempted his first triathlon. “We rode the cycling portion together, and built a bond that has seen us
compete again and ride in support of other wounded warriors in various events.”
William speaks highly of his riding partner. “It doesn't take much time around Ivan to realize what an inspiration he is to
other vets, kids, and people of all walks of life. Through all of these events and time in the saddle with others, and Ivan
in particular, I am always rewarded by getting back much more in return than any time or effort I put in. My life is
infinitely richer for these experiences, and I expect more of the same as we embark on this great cross country
adventure. “
“I can't help but think of Ivan when I read the quote below, and I aspire to do the same.”
"In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human
being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit." - Albert Schweitzer, philosopher,
physician, musician, Nobel laureate (1875-1965)

El Pomar Foundation
History and tradition don't always lead to innovation, but in the case of El Pomar Foundation these three
words are intertwined.
History means we've been around a long time-since 1937 when entrepreneur Spencer
Penrose and his wife Julie established a legacy to serve as a valuable resource for the
people of Colorado.
Tradition means we do some things year in and year out. Grantmaking is one example. El
Pomar Foundation makes grants to nonprofit organizations in the state of Colorado--and
has been doing so since the Foundation was established. Some grantees have been
funded on a regular basis since the days when the Penroses made grant decisions themselves.
Innovation means the trustees of El Pomar are constantly looking for new ways to achieve the mission set
forth by the Penroses - to enhance, encourage and promote the current and future well-being of the people of
Colorado. El Pomar's extensive programs are an example of innovation in action. The program details are all
different, but together they support the same objectives of developing leaders and strengthening
communities.

World T.E.A.M. Sports is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization chartered in North Carolina and headquartered in Holbrook, New
York. For more than twenty years, World T.E.A.M. Sports has organized all kinds of
athletic events for disabled and able bodied citizens – mountain climbing, white
water rafting, biking, and more. We change lives through sports.
World T.E.A.M. Sports uses sporting activities to challenge disabled and able bodied
men, women and children to reach accomplishments they never thought possible.
Four things always happen at our events: (1) Disabled participants build self
confidence and physical fitness; (2) The disabled provide a role model for other
disabled citizens, encouraging them to take up physical activities; (3) The disabled
become a moving inspiration to other participants and to spectators when they see that disabled individuals can meet challenges
beyond anyone’s imagination; (4) The disabled and able-bodied participants learn to work as a team to overcome those challenges.
Support for World T.E.A.M. Sports comes primarily from individual and corporate donations and sponsorships.

“World T.E.A.M. Sports has given me an opportunity to re-identify myself. People don’t look at me as just an injured veteran
anymore. They now see me as the veteran that rode her hand cycle across the country and climbed a mountain in Nepal. These
experiences have allowed me to see myself as a stronger more complete person. I am not just surviving after being injured, I am
truly living! Thank you World T.E.A.M. Sports!!! I'm ready! What's next?” - Nicolette Maroulis, US Navy (Ret), Face of America
(2010), Sea to Shining Sea (2010), Soldiers to the Summit Nepal Expedition (2010)
“For most people, the road to recovery starts when they enter a rehabilitation hospital. But for me, the recovery process
started in March 2007 when I left my final rehabilitation hospital and joined a team called World T.E.A.M. Sports. That’s
when I accepted the challenge of riding the Face of America ride–my very first ride and a ride that changed my life! As I look
back to the harsh reality five years ago knowing I would never walk again, I am extremely humble and grateful that the Lord
put World T.E.A.M. Sports in my life to be able to give me challenges that would in the most positive way alter my quality of
life.” - Eric Frazer, US Marine Corps. (Ret), Sea to Shining Sea (2010), Face of America (2007), Adventure TEAM Challenge
