Professor Pozzi at RIS - Thursday 26 March, 16.30
Thank you to the parents who have already secured their place to attend next week’s
lecture. If you haven’t already, make sure you book your place to participate in the
stimulating lecture by Mr Prozzi on the way in which the main paradigms in
economics were formed, how they have influenced the evolution of reality and the
impact they may have on our future: a perspective in which history, economics and
philosophy are interrelated; and how to interpret the world in which we live and in
which our children are going to live in. Please reserve your place asap by writing to
[email protected].

Rome Marathon:
Operation Smile
Sunday 22 March
RIS Grade 4 teacher, Mr
Andrew Crase will be
running 42 km at the
Maratona di Roma in
support of Operation Smile a RIS charity for 2014/15.
Thanks to the outstanding
support from the RIS
community, we have
managed to raise a fantastic
€2.485 surpassing our initial
target of €900, for an Italian
Medical team to give five
children smiles in
Madagascar.
Mr Crase has actually been
the top fundraiser of the
Charity Programmes for this
Marathon! We are incredibly
proud of him and our
community. He will receive a
special prize for this from the
Rete del Dono. For more
information on Sunday’s
event please email the PTA.

Father’s Day
celebrations
The Elementary School
celebrated Father’s Day on
Thursday with a breakfast
for all the wonderful
Elementary dads.
Nursery celebrated Father's
Day by making these lovely
bow ties for their daddies!
Modern day Fathers
Thursday 19 March was Fathers' Day, so Grade 3F
created some modern Fathers' Day cards for the Dads in
our class. Our lives today are full of technology, so we
decided to combine this with the traditional Fathers' Day
cards and we came up with the
"iDad". Each icon on the iDad
has a special message for
Dad underneath.
The class had a lot of fun
making these special cards
and we hope the Dads enjoy
them too!
- Ms Fowler, Grade 3F
Business and a box of baguettes
As part of their unit on How the World Works, 4C
had to imagine setting up a business with 100
euros. To stimulate their inquiries Mr Tirelli very
kindly visited the class to explain how he set up his
own business. As a student in Switzerland, he
made up his mind to start his own food enterprise
based on top quality Italian food. Nowadays, he
has branches in Rome and Milan with new
openings in New York! He gave the class a great
insight into the realities of investment, costs and
rewards. Mr Tirelli ended his wonderful talk with
freshly made baguettes for all the class from his
establishment by the Pantheon! Thank you Mr
Tirelli!

Teacher
Conferences
On Tuesday 24 March the
High School parent-teacher
conference will take place. An e mail has already been
sent but if you are a High
School parent please
encourage your son or
daughter to make
appointments on your
behalf. Please remember
there are no classes in the
afternoon apart from Mr
Paratore's 9B class and
Mrs Bastelli's Grade 7
electives. These will take
place at 13:40 rather than
15:40. Lunch will be
available to all the students
who want it and have paid
for it. We can supervise
Middle School students
who travel on school buses
until 15:40.
Please note that the parentteacher conference for
Middle School is not
scheduled until early in the
new term.
On Thursday 19 March Grade 12 accompanied by Miss Walters and Mr Allard
attended the inaugurazione dell'anno accademico at LUISS.
This was a very interesting ceremony. It majored on economics and the highlights
included an impassioned speech by Jacopo Macri, the student representative who
made a powerful plea for more opportunities and economic growth in Italy. Mr
Macri called on the Italian authorities to adopt the models of business growth and
development that are so successfully modelled at LUISS.
Pier Carlo Padoan, Ministro dell'Economia e delle Finanze, gave a wide-ranging
speech. LUISS then conferred an honorary degree on the Nobel Prize winning
economist Jean Tirole. Prof. Tirole spoke about the current economic situation with
reference to Greece and the Eurozone. All the students benefited from this
experience, which was academically challenging and had a real impact.
- Mr Allard, Middle/High Principal
Model United Nations - reflections
Having completed the second successful MUN programme in Rome and in New
York 2015, it is important to reflect on the educational nature of this unique
experience. Being an IB school, we very much adopt the values of the UN since
these were the core values from its inception of this world wide educational system.
Therefore, the participation in the MUN is a distinguished extension to ‘classroom
learning’ where students have the opportunity to apply their skills and ways of
thinking as ‘global citizens”.
Despite travelling with a younger team than last year, our students have surprised
and amazed me with their commitment and hard work throughout the conference.
Their performance was that of highly professional adults, with each day starting at
7:00 am and committees ending past 11:00pm, with debriefings starting at
11:30pm, ending their days past midnight.
The New York High School Model United Nations 2015 brought together 3800
students, many of them native English speakers, thus it has to be acknowledged
that our students demonstrated great confidence, and were fully engaged in
speeches and were all sponsors of passing resolutions.
Yet, the learning experience was not limited to the conference. Students had a
guided tour at the New York University, visited the MOMA, the financial district, and
many other places of interest.

IGCSE exams:
Gr 11 parents
Parents of Grade 11
students are informed
that the students have
received their
Statements of
Entry listing the IGCSEs
they have been entered
for and the exam times. They have also received
timetables indicating
clearly when the exams
are. This timetable will
be emailed to parents
soon. Please remember
that there are two
exams, History and
Economics, on the June
1 'Ponte'. Students
taking these exams will
need to be in school on 1
June.
MUN reflections continued
We also want to take this opportunity to thank the Consules team, who made this
experience possible and who put forward so much effort to turn it into such a great
success.
Please find below some testimonials of our NHSMUN 2015 participants:
“The Model United Nations influenced my way of approaching things and
learning. Being in New York, in the shoes of a real delegate made me
understand how difficult, but at the same time how interesting, the job of a
delegate of the United Nations is. During the sessions I learned many new
things as facts and information about different countries, I learned how to
persuade people, how to create an effective speech, and how to valorize an
issue that might seem not important but actually is. I also learned to know
many competitive students from all the world. I recommend this fantastic
experience to everyone!” Ginevra Di Blasio G10
“My experience in New York has been one that I will never forget, it has been
amazing to work with students from all around the world, to find solutions to
actual problems that are afflicting the world. The MUN has been a real work
experience and I understood how United Nations work and how challenging it
is to reach an agreement. New York is a fascinating city which I loved to
explore, I hope I will go back again.” Cosmo Peretti G10
“The first thing that impressed me was the enormous number of students of my
age coming from all over the world. We all followed the same course in the
same language but with different cultures and traditions. It was incredible to be
there and to share our points of view and our experiences. It was a chance for
me personally to show what I had studied and that I was prepared to face such
a large assembly without fear. This experience gave me great confidence in
terms of public speaking abilities, public relations, and improved my knowledge
and diplomatic abilities. An extraordinary experience which I will treasure all my
life.” Leonardo Cecconato, G12

Middle/High School
MUN reflections continued
“The HSMUN experience has been one of the most educative and enlightening
school trips I have even been in. It taught me to be more independent, selforganized, communicative and cooperative, but also to never underestimate
others. We worked hard in this intense week and during every other MUN
lesson but this journey has not only been about that, we had fun together and
had the privilege to meet so many new friends. We were also given numerous
instructional presentations, such as the one from UNICEF, which I personally
preferred. It was a short-term experience, which will, nonetheless, accompany
us throughout our whole lives. The things we learned and achieved will help us
in our future in order to decide what to do in life and how to do it at our best.
The HSMUN experience has been extremely helpful to us as individuals, both
academically and personally. I want to thank every single person who has
helped our group go through this, every single member of our small MUNers
group and finally Miss El Sheikh.” Amanda Salvati G11
“MUN was an experience which greatly benefited my learning and way of
thinking; I had the opportunity to not only make friends with new people from all
over the world, but learn things which I wouldn’t learn at school. It has given me
a more open-minded outlook on the world, as I’ve had to study two countries
which I originally knew nothing about and I can now bring up examples
regarding them in a number of different subjects. I also learned how to work
with a large group of people and write a resolution which will benefit and satisfy
all of the countries present, rather than our country alone. It taught me how to
debate, negotiate and write resolutions and this will be useful in any job the
people who participated choose to do.” Kirsty Robinson G10
My experience with the MUN in New York City in the beginning of March was
eye-opening. I learned the importance of having to follow precise rules during
the sessions, during which I acted as a delegate, assuming the correlated
responsibilities. It was very interesting meeting students from all over the world
and exchanging different points of view with them about serious, actual
international topics, such as infant mortality, gender issues and infertility in
developing countries. It was a real privilege being able to participate in this
unique program. Maria Letizia Massa G 11
