SOUTHEASTERN GTO ASSOCIATION
January 2010
The Christmas Luncheon at the Red
Top Mountain Lodge had to be one of
the most enjoyable club gatherings in
the 16 years I have been with SEGTOA. Twenty three members were present plus twenty spouses and friends.
We had the whole lodge dinning room
with an excellent complete buffet
lunch. And a lot of time to meet and
greet club members and friends I had
not seen in many months. During the
gift picking and trading (definitely a
hoot this year) we even had the REAL
Santa Clause and Mrs. Clause cruise by
on their way from one event to another.
To top the meeting off Denny somehow slipped up and told one of the best
Christmas stories we all had ever
heard. The best ending came reviewing
the 69 Judge and 71 Convertible
GTO‘s brought by club members Jerry
and Pam Hickox. ―NICE‖
month until the show.
By the January newsletter release over
180 invitation letters will have gone
out to past Georgia based SEGTOA
and GTOAA members to reconsider
club membership. If you know of a
past member or possible interested new
member, direct them to the web site for
an application.
Other potential tech session presentations: brakes, cleaning the engine compartment, the real detailing pointers
(before the BOP&C), detailing your
trunk, rebuilding Rochester‘s, front end
and rear end suspensions, exhaust systems, electrical wiring, radiators and
core support, the dash, A/C details, the
engine and transmission, what to carry
in your GTO trunk when driving,
breakdown prevention before you (or
spouse) drive your GTO.
The Cadillac club is already hard at
work on the 29th annual BOP&C at the
Marietta Convention Center April 23 rd
and 24th near downtown Marietta.
Check the flyer in the newsletter each
The monthly calendar of events will
continue with at least a 3 month look
ahead for you to plan your Saturdays
with SEGTOA and GTO‘s. Looking
forward to this year‘s monthly meetings we will try to group together each
month a specific tech session with a
spouse/family event. Let me know if
you have an interest in a specific tech
session or possible meeting location
and event idea.
This year we will examine the GTO
from front to rear, inside and out, top to
bottom. Below is a draft list of possible
tech sessions with session focusing on
seats, carpet, headliner, and door panels taking place in January. I will direct
the session and Denny will start when I
have said the wrong thing.

2010 January Club Meeting
Saturday, January 9th
What:
Indoor go cart racing, followed by a tech session and a lunch
When:
January 9, 2010, at noon (12:00 pm).
Where:
Andretti Entertainment Complex, 11000 Alpharetta Highway, Roswell, GA 30076
Directions:
Take GA 400 North to Mansell Road (Exit 8). Make a left onto Mansell Road, traveling under GA
400. Go about 2 miles until you reach the major intersection of Highway 9/Alpharetta Highway.
Make a right onto Alpharetta Highway. The complex is located just past the first traffic light (Houze
Way) on your left-hand side. The main phone number is 770-992-5688.
Detailed description:
This complex has two indoor go cart racing tracks with new Stratos Super karts which are world renowned for their speed and superior handling. Compete against up to nine drivers per race while
completing 10-15 laps in an 8 minute heat at speeds that can exceed 35 mph. The facility has a high
tech timing system so you can keep track of where you finish in the rankings. I know of at least one
member in the club with the initials of (DS) who loves to race. We hope everyone will choose to participate as it certainly looked like a lot of fun to me when I toured the facility. There are also a large
number of arcade games as well as foosball & pool tables for the entire family to enjoy.
After the racing Jim Norman & Denny Sanford will put on a tech session covering seats, carpet &
door panels which will be held in one of the classrooms at the facility.
Immediately following the tech session we will proceed to Longhorns Restaurant located in the
Mansell Oaks Shopping Center at 900 Mansell Road, Roswell, GA for a late lunch or an early dinner.
We look forward to a large turnout as we have attempted to set up the meeting in an area which is
easily accessible and as centrally located as possible to the majority of our members.

JIM’S TECH CORNER
Radiator Core Support—The Poor Man’s Fix
By Jim Norman
I continue to see non-frame off yet restored GTO‘s and this means is that the rubber bushings between the frame and body are all original. And while these bushings do not generally split and
crush flat after 40 years the same cannot be said for the radiator core support bushings.
The driver side metal beneath the battery tray down to the core support has rusted to the point that
the core support itself is only being held up by the fender well, front fender, and front valance
panel. And the actual bushings are crushed due to the 40 years of road elements and weather.
A new bushing set is available from the GTO resto houses for about $20.00 and can be installed
one side at a time with the front bumper left on after removing the front valance panel. Be prepared for the old bolt to shear off.
The real challenge comes with the NEW bushing mounting. The metal area that holds the rubber
bushing is rusted out larger than the diameter of the new rubber bushing. So unless you spend
over $200 for a new core support and completely remove entire the front clip (2) sheet metal
plates with a 1‖ diameter hole have to be fabricated and secured to the top and bottom of the EXISTING core support to INSTALL the core support bushings properly. (See photo).
Looks like items the GTO resto houses could make and sell to help the poor man‘s GTO restoration.

He who dies with the most toys wins? Really?
By Joseph Montenegrino , Classic Car Community Newsletter (Nov 1st 2009 issue)
Courtesy of Roy ‘Smitty’ Smth
I got an email from a buddy of mine the other day about this amazing collection of classics in
Punta Gorda, Florida. You can read the article at http://www.classiccarcommunity.com/news/
All+Revved+Up/92/. I looked through the pictures and it reminded me of a poster that I had in college. It was a poster of a 4 car garage where you can see a Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini and I
think a Shelby Cobra, the caption read ―He who dies with the most toys, wins.‖ I thought that was
awesome. Then I read this article and thought, this guy took that saying way too far. I mean, when
does it become an obsession vs. hobby vs. enjoyment? I read another article about a couple in Canada that collected every convertible that Chevy ever made, up to 1973. I though again, where is the
fun in that? Do they drive these cars? At times, I bet, they don‘t even remember buying some of
those cars. Every car I had, I drove. Cars are meant to be driven, especially collectibles.
Now, if your argument is that these are investments like fine art, Picasso and the like, then I would
agree, the more the merrier. However, you would have to put the cars on display in your home
somewhere, so when you walk by, you can look at it and enjoy the beauty. That I agree with, but I
sincerely doubt my wife would allow me to park a 1969 Boss Mustang in our master bedroom. Although, I remember a story in the eighties where a guy in Italy bought a Ferrari F40, tore down a
wall in his living room, moved that car into it and built the wall back up. That was AWESOME!
Back to the two articles and my next question…quality or quantity? The collection in Florida has
over 200 cars and if you compare that to (another show that I watched) the Ralph Lauren Collection where he has about 30 cars, of which are some of the rarest Ferrari's in the world, then who
wins there? The combined value of those 200 Chevy‘s might be worth one of Ralph's (we are on a
first name basis) cars. So now what? Does quality win over quantity?
I am going to shift gears here. Another story that caught my attention was on the show Chasing
Classic Cars last week. A Connecticut couple bought a 1960 Chevy Impala convertible in 1981
and literally parked the car and never drove it. I think the car had 26,000 original miles. The wife
asked the husband if they could take it out and drive and he said, ―No it will diminish the value.‖
Sure enough, the husband passed away earlier this year and the wife called Wayne Carini to help
her sell the car. Wayne took the car, freshened it up, detailed it and put it up for sale at a Mecum
auction. They wanted somewhere between $35k and $45k. The car sold for $33,250 dollars. I
thought…what a shame. That great couple had that car for so long, didn‘t drive it and then only got
$33,250. What a shame! I say drive them. Drive the hell out of them, restore them, drive the hell
out of them again, and restore them again.
Page 7
Now, I know many of you are saying to yourself, they are only original once. I then would ask
what kind of original do you want? Do you want the Connecticut couple‘s Impala that has no history because it was parked for 50 years, or do you want the original Shelby that Carroll Shelby
himself raced and won all those championships with? I say drive the hell out of them.
To sum up, the enjoyment of the cars should be the first reason you buy a car. Even if you are fortunate enough to have all kinds of cars in the stable, or one of the rarest cars in the world, get out
there and drive them. As for ―the guy who dies with the most toys wins‖…no matter how fast
your cars is, no matter how rare your car is and no matter how perfect your car is…someone will
make a car faster, someone will have a car that is more rare and someone will have a newly restored car that is more perfect than yours. And in the end, you can‘t take them with you, so
DRIVE THE HELL OUT OF THEM!
Ho, Ho, Ho—December 2009 Meeting
Story by Pam Immekus
Pictures by Pam Immekus and Eija Trees
What a Merry Christmas Party we had! We had 22 members and 16 spouses (or significant others). And the Fieseler‘s brought their daughter and granddaughter. Even Santa showed up. The
food was great and the company better. We exchanged gifts and had a choice of keeping one from
the table or stealing one previously claimed. There were a few altercations involved (all in fun, of
course). We installed our officers for 2010:
President - Jim Norman, Past President - John Link, Vice President - Denny Sanford,
Secretary - Pam Immekus, Treasurer - Ed Bellair, Vice President of Meetings - David Peebles,
Vice President of Membership - Jon Ward, Newsletter Vice Presidents - David & Eija Trees,
Vice President of Merchandise - Barry Dameron, Board Member - Bob Immekus.
If you‘re curious why there are so many V.P.‘s , its that they each have a vote on the Board under
our By-Laws as a V.P.
As web mistress, I would be happy to accept any digital photos of your car(s) that you wish displayed on our rolling video sidebar on the website. Send to [email protected]. Check the
website www.segtoa.org for past copies of the Newsletter, our event calendar and all the photos of
our member‘s cars.
Our Newsletter has once again won an award from the GTOAA this past convention in Dayton,
OH. Please forward your articles, photos, news items, things for sale or things you‘re looking for
to the Trees at [email protected]. It‘s the Trees‘ expert assembly that makes the newsletter look
so good, but it‘s the content that they receive from us that makes it so interesting.
If you have suggestions for upcoming meetings please forward them to David Peebles at
[email protected].
Page 8
We are still in need of some tech advisors to cover 1972 thru 1974 and for all the newer GTO‘s.
Since our membership is open to all Pontiacs, we could use tech advisors for other models as well. If
you are interested in helping your fellow members with your expertise, please email me and I‘ll add
you to our list on the website.
Last item, the next GTOAA convention will be held in Wichita, Kansas. Bob and I will be going and
we are contemplating driving. More information is available at www.gtoaameet.org/. The dates are
June 30th through July 4th. Some of the events planned are a Trolley excursion to Old Town, a cruise
to Cowtown, and Drag races at the Strip. (Ask Denny about racing a rental car.)
Thanks to all the Board members for their willingness to serve the membership.
