From seeking 'retirement" from association officership to
the presidency - quite a turn of events---we accepted the challenge because circumstances often dictate the course we must follow. When
Bob & Liv Carlson, through reasons of job opportunity and being closer to
their family, moved to North Carolina, they resigned as presidents of NNJ
SDA. We, as first Vice Presidents, gladly assumed the responsibility.
After that, continuing in that capacity for 1981-1982 seemed like a logical and agreeable consequence. We stand ready, with the newly elected
Executive Board, to serve, to the best of our abiliLies, our favorite recreational activity: SQUARE DANCING. We feel strongly that we can only
do so with the support of each dancer from ALL clubs.
Please communicate with us. Your Executive Board welcomes suggestions
and constructive criticism. We promise to give each one received our
thoughtful and careful consideration.
We need each other. Together we can continue to "expand square dancing
and promote the interest of our member clubs."
Speaking of 'EXPANDING'
CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF '81. We welcome
you, we need your refreshing enthusiasm. Let us all take time to be
friendly and to have fun with our graduates. We'll be looking for you in
a square at all the associations' SUMMER DANCES.

thatch,
Spring! and we are literally whirling our way to summer, drawing new
dancers into the vortex as we go. At our Presiden4- 's Ball we were joined
by a dozen first couples & were treated to a dancing exhibition by the
loveable Cast-offs. After the wearing of the green, we did our Spring
cleaning for the flea market dance & then readied for the big event; the
graduation of the Class of '81. We feel like proud parents, but it was
only a short time ago when we were the se'f-conscious fledgelings. Thanks
to Ron/Doris Duda and their band of dedicated angers & to the meticulous
teaching of Bruce Vertun, Western Wheelers is four square livelier!
We will again provide the means for all graduates to sharpen their
skills & work up to club level dancing with outdoor summer workshops on
Monday evenings in Petruska Park, Paramus, See our ad on p. 8 for details.
Be well. Be happy!

COMPLIMENTS to our new graduates (12 couples/8 singles) on their transition to full-fledged club dancers! A special "Thank You" to the Angels
who faithfully gave their time to help out. Charter members Bill/Lucille
Roppenecker & Don/Joan Green are gratefully commended because they've
served as angels each year since they graduated 4 years agp!!! A Quarterly
Selection Review & +1 Workshops are being offered Monday evenings this
Spring (see our flyers). Dick Pasvolsky & Pal Johnson will be the callers.
Our Annual Meeting & Covered Dish Supper for members will be held prior
to our June dance. Our last dance in June is "Strawberry Strut", suggested
by Bill/Luciile Roppenecker, who won the gift certificate in the contest
to name the dance, We're sure that a strawberry dessert will be "in the
making" for refreshments that night!!!
During July & August we'll be
dancing on our regular nights at Hillcrest Community Center. Bob Mitchell,
Fred Weiner, Bob Tarrant & Ralph Stapenell will be calling.
We're pleased Western Wheelers raided us recently with no less than 6
sets, which certainly added to the pleasure of dancing that nicht. A mystery Bus Ride to visit the Pocono Squares, PA was enjoyec by our

Thinking back over the past few months on the activities that our club
has had, we hope that everyone enjoyed themselves! We had a Valentine
Dance where Charles Hunt was crowned King & Wendy Spinks Queen. Ali sweethearts had a good time. At our St. Patrick's dance everyone found their
lucky Shamrock mate. The world's biggest Leprechaun was there in the person of Dave Mulraney, along with the green suit, hat, red beard & ale.
Graduation Dance was a time of excitement as we welcomed our new members. Thanks go to Van/Lola VanBree for a terrific job as 2nd VP in
charge of classes. We had a Mystery Dangle Dance where confusion reigned
during one tip as each square did its own thing such as munch apples, suck
lemons, ate pickles, slid around in shoe boxes & paper bags. We danced
6 to a square. During February we were raided by Kittatinny Rangers and
in March by Leisure Squares. We also demonstrated at St. Mary's church
in Hackettstown & Our Lady of the Mountain church in Long Valley. More
demonstrations are set for May & June. We think that there is no bett,e:.
way to get new people interested in the wonderful world of square dance
Our thanks go to the callers, cuers, Executive Board and all dancers
for making this a good year for Warren Wheelers. We wind upe 2hd Thw ,

Our pot luck dinner dance which was also our 30th anniversary celebration was indeed a gala occasion. The hall was filled with old and new
friends and the cuisine was superb. The trip down memory lane was pure
nostalgia including three charter members, Keith Douglas plus Alice/Al
Fulmer who travelled from North Carolina for the occasion. Past presidents and life members were honored and a few of the many 'firsts" on
which Tenakill prides itself were highlighted. As a Grand Finale, Prexy
Art Rellinger disguised as King Neptune wheeled in his "Pearly Queen",
Helen and distributed pearl dangles to one and all. During the dance itself, John Kaltenthaler and Peg/Doc Tirrell alternated current dances
with those of the past 30 years.
The "Happy Squares" our demo group to entertain shut-ins and senior
citizen groups recently entertained & educated an elementary school group
with explanations & demonstrations of the history of our American Fo? k
Dance. Speaking of which, Peg Tirrell & Frank/Helen Cavanaugh have become regular commuters to Trenton trying to get Gov. Byrne to s i gn AJR 29.
We were all saddened by the news of the untimely death of Bill Suessmann
who became ill while vacationing in Florida. Bill always added fun and
sparkle to every square he joined. On the more serious side, he was a
willing worker in several clubs and as a volunteer in Pascack Valley Hospital. He leaves a big hole and will be sorely missed. Condolences to
his widow, Catherine.

CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES
very warm welcome to each of
of 1981! We, of Tenafly Squares, extend a
you & hope you will find your we to Demarest.
Our Valentine Dance was again aii.ast special occasion with decorations
of the day including an electrified heart plus romantically dimmed lights.
Paul Brody did an excellent job of calling for us as we danced off all
those calories. Cueing the Rounds, we had Bob Gordons substituting for
the Tirrells. Our club was the first club where Bob ever called Rounds,
so it was a real 'reunion" type treat to have him and his wife Lynne return to us. Pot '0 Gold at the Rainbows End and lots of wearin' of the
green indicated St. Patrick's Day was indeed the theme in March. Would
you believe green goodies? Paul Brody did his usua; good job of putl 7 ng
US through those steps we love. Doc Tirrell cued rounds, while Peg attended a Scouting affair but she came later - in full Scout unif•om (green,
too). Our raid to Stan's Patriotic Squares coincided with his 5th Ann:versery of calling and everyone had lots of fun. Next, we raide6
friends at belles & beaux Pinc were warmly received.
ReMember "C'mon Over", the welcome YELLOW ROCK is always out to both
Round end Square Dancers alike. Enjoy a safe & dancin/ summer and see you

All sets in order? Don't hear that much anymore but, thanks to a publication by that name, Sets In Order, we who travel can square dance world
wide. On the other side of the coin, WE have the pleasure of welcoming
travelers. Such was the case in March when Bruce/Audrey Snider, lately
of Hawaii, visited us.
And now that Spring is sprung and the grass is
riz, we know another season is almost over. Doesn't seem possible! Once
again we have proven a hardy bunch who, despite a plethora (isn't that a
great word?) of crises, are determined to pursue our favorite activity.
Now that doesn't mean we never have a complaint. Square dancers certainly
do and the biggest one has to do with sore feet. This of course has to do
with the floor of the hall. Nothing like a wood floor.
So come, enjoy,
& leave with happy feet. 8 PM for rounds and of course 8:30 for squares.
See you around a square.

Welcome to I h e grand world of square dancing - that was the theme of
our graduation ball. Chairpersons of this very ceremonial affair was Lou/
Terry Gaeta. Gene Lucarini conducted a very impressive ceremony. We must
say our graduation was a touching and moving affair. We're sure this
night will be long remembered by the graduates and surely everyone there.
On the next night the new dancers went on their first raid to Kings Sq.
That's real ly starting on the right foot.
In April our theme was the
"Bunny Hop". They had bunnies hopping all over the dance hall. Well,
not real bunnies, but dancers dressed in bunny outfits. They hopped from
square to square. We also had an egg hunt & prizes too. It certainly
was different. Thanks to Jim/Joann Adams the Chr. & their committee.

We celebrated our 18th BIRTHDAY in May.
if you
I
missed the bus trip to
Carl's Club, the Circle Eighters of Wi lkes Barre, PA, you missed a lot of
fun. 6 Sets enjoyed a very warm welcome, good dancing & refreshments galore. A free dance for new graduates at Stepping Stones in May had our
new dancers in the 'swing' of things. We congratulate them & encourage
them to get out & dance, dance, dance this summer. Let's all do our part
& greet these folks with a friendly smi le & a helping hand. Can it be
that our last dance of this season in June only a few weeks away? Our
annual pot-luck supper is planned for that night. Start getting those
recipes out, we'd sure like to have you with us to close the season.
Looking ahead to Fall, we want you to be sure to mark your calendars for
our opener the day after Labor Day. Carl Hanks will be back to begin another great year of dancing & Grace/Walt Penn ie will be cueing the rounds.
Have a swinging summer.

Remember Valentine's Day? We do! It was one of most successful dances
coupled with our most successful after-party supper. And we are just about
cal ibrated - we managed to have plenty of food without having as much left
over as we ate.
Raiding has been a major club activity lately. Raids
to Covered Bridge & Hix & Ch ix, both organ i zed by Buddy Goode I I ,were quite
successful and more are in the works.
Again this year we will not be dancing through the summer; our last
dance is third Sunday in June. As we head into the summer, it is time to
remember our callers this past year: Betsy Gotta, who also did a fine job
teaching our class, Frank Riviccio who helped us strengthen our dancing &
have a good time doing it, and, of course, Bob Tarrant, our good friend
for these many years. Speaking of these many years - did you know that
Solitaires is 6 years old this June? Happy Ann i versary to us! And a
Happy, safe summer to all our dancing friends. See you next Fall!

It's been a great Spring for us. Early in April a class of 33 graduated. It was an exciting evening; enjoyed by all. Congratulations & best
wishes to all our graduates. May you enjoy square dancing for a long time.
Mike/Marion Lattig thank all of the angels who helped with the lessons &
the club thanks Mike/Marion & Wilson Hoff for a terrific job.
We've had 3 successful raids - West Milford Flutterwheels, 27 couples;
Grand Prowlers 251/2 couples, & Somerset Hills. Al/Ruth Rosenbohm deserve
a blue ribbon for promoting club spirit. Roger/Joan Morgan hosted the
great after-party following the Prowler Raid. Over 100 people will be
wearing a 20th anniversary dangle from the dinner dance. Dave Manning
gave us a brief history of the club. Our original club had 2 sets in
Roxbury. Our present & past presidents were introduced; 10 out of 12 attended the dinner including Fay/Ray Weiler who were visiting from CA.
Late in the evening we had an unexpected guest - the Easter Bunny-identity
unknown. Everyone ate well and enjoyed dancing to the calling of Jim &
Wilson. To end a good year of dancing we'll dance to the calling of Bob
Mitchell, Mike Cleary and Jim Adams. The final dance will be preceeded
by our annual covered dish supper - oh, those calories. See our ad on

The Winter/Spring changeover was a busy & hectic time, A March snowstorm cancelled our Strawberry Festival & we're not sure how many delicious
strawberry shortcakes finally found their way to non-Merri 8's stomachs.
The weather was fine, though, at our St. Patrick's Day dance later that
month, called by our favorite leprechaun, Glenn Begorra Cooke. Our Barn
Dance had been sold out for many weeks & the hall was really packed; it

ing the Galaxy Wheelers :n Levittown,PA. We helped them celebrate Ralph
Stapenetils birthday. Another trip is being planned for May.
At our graduates dance more than 30 sets participated. Our more than
50 graduates were quite impressed with so many people square dancing. Now
that classes are over, we'll be conducting +2 workshops to the end of June.
As yqu e
see in our ad, on page 4f, our club dances will continue right
Through the summer. Pease note that the July & August dances will be held
at a different location & at a different time. Air conditioned,so c'mon

Seasons pass, but sculptered in memory are the good times, friends, acquaintances, & enjoyable encounters. What a year! Hardly seems possible
that it is about to reach its climax. However, it will extend through the
talents of Dick Jones in July & Glenn Cooke in August at the VFW in Iselin.
Our two specials in March & April were a blast or shoOd I say a memorable
encounter. Mystery Bus Ride - Mike Adelman for a superlative effort.
Again it is that time of year that we acknowledge our gratitude to our

The S/D Season has sped by very fast. We have had a great graduating
Class who are now attending a iI & 2 workshop. Our mystery Bus Ride and
raids to other clubs have kept us dancing constantly. We are encouraging
both new graduates & older members to continue square dancing during the
summer months wherever they may be. To assist them we will provide our
members with information on dancing in our area & elsewhere in the country.
We are looking forward to our dinner dance in June when our new slate
of officers will be installed. We wish to take this opportunity to
this year's officers for the terrific job they have done in running
club. Enjoy your summer and keep dancing.Mutiettaite Go•dbe4g212-645-(n

At this time each year an annual ritual takes place, the graduates jai
us at our regular club dances. The graduates bring vitality into club
dancing along with the new challenges & renewed dedication for experience
dancers. Each of us is afforded an opportunity to develop friendships
among the graduates for they will not forget those who have helped them
over those initial tips that were causes for anxiety. So let each of us
make a special effort to encourage the graduates & to make them feel tha
the Isle Squares is the right home for them.
We are proud to announce that Frank Riviccio will be our Club Caller
for 1981-1982. We feel fortunate to have Jean/Frank join us, for they ar
friends of long standing. Frank is an experienced caller & a successful
teacher, who will offer his many talents to our club. We extend a warm
friendly welcome to Jean/Frank Riviccio as club caller for Isles.
Leave taking is always difficult but there comes a time when change
must force us to recognize its need & to disturb our routines. Time is a
precious commodity & when a caller has given as generously of his time as
Glenn Cooke has given of his, there comes a point in time when he must re
duce his commitments. Glenn will conclude his long tenure as our club cal
ler at our June dinner-dance. Many hearts will be chilled by the loss of
such dear friends as Janet/Glenn Cooke. It is never wise to dwell on
goodbyes, however we do wish to thank you for the dedicated service that
you have given over these many years. We hope to visit you often & we ho
that you will return as a guest caller as often as you can. Farewell!

Within a few weeks, the curtains will close for our 1980-81 season. !ri
the meantime, however, we have scheduled many great callers who will provide pleasurable evenings for all who attend Our dances. For instance,
our last dance in June features Ralph Stapenell.
It is fitting at this stage to extend thanks to the officers for their
immeasurable effort the entire year to insure that everyone who attended
our dances had an enjoyable time; to our cuers, Grace/Walt Pennie, for
their expert guidance on the rounds; to the guest callers for their stimulating and challenging calling; to all the dancers who supported us by
their attendance - we really enjoyed dancing with you; thanks for being a
friendly and fun part of our lives. The list would not be complete without conveying our appreciation to the staff & editors of GRAND SQUARE for
their time & hard work in providing us with a publication "jam packed"
with general dance information & activities of other clubs. [You're welcome]
See p.5 for when we will usher in our 1981-82 dance season. Circle this
date on your calendar as well as every 1st & 3rd Saturday of each month
so you can join us for great dancing. We look forward to seeing you. Best

Well Folks, Summer is on it's way. We've been busy with Raids & Demos
at various Nursing Homes Social & business functions, & many more plans in
the near future. Cross Trail Sq. Campers are set to go & looking forward
to a change of pace. Our new slate of officers are ready to take over.
This will be our last writing for Cross Trail, it was a wonderful experience. Everyone should take a turn in some office. Also, when asked to
help say ,"Yes", after all it's OUR club - not His or Hers.
By the time
you read this, we would have had our Mystery Bus Ride, at this moment only
Stan, I & the Bus Co. knows. When we start Dancing in Sept. come join us.
We'd love to see old friends & get to meet new ones. All are welcome to
join our club too. Our last wo-d of advice to the new Grads, do all the
dancing you can during the summer, when Fall comes you'll be raring to go
to all the clubs avai;abLe to you, and there are plenty. A Safe & Happy
Summer and Good Dancing! WP:come to our new officers, Good Luck! Good Bye

The wearin' of the green was much in evidence at our St. Patrick's Day
Dance. It was good to have numerous friends from other clubs join us to
celebrate. Dick Pasvolsky enlivened the fun with some unique contras.
The very next day found many CB members attired in green S/D costumes
marching in Nutley's St. Patty's parade. It was cold & windy, but spirits
were high! Even Gov. Byrne came to celebrate! If your reporter had
known she would be mischieviously twirled in front of the reviewing stand,
she would not have worn her orange petti-pants! When the parade was over
we joined local celebrants with an impromptu party at a local spot, went
on to supper, then on to Pres. Oiler's home, then on to "Swingin' Stars"
where the "swingin" continued. There were enuf of us to make it a raid!
March festivities ended with a fun special - our "Sundae on a Friday" ice
cream party with lots of trimmings. "See Saws" were raiders and hopefully
got their fill! Happy Spring to all.-MaAgie/Watty Cox

COUNTRY PROMENADERS
2 S 4 Satutdays
It is with regret that we report the passing of a beloved member of our
club, Margaret Martinez. Quietly, she slipped away on March 28th in the
midst of doing one of the things she enjoyed most - square dancing. Margaret will be sorely missed by all of us. Her kind heart, happy smile,
and good word for everyone will be long remembered by all her square dancing friends. We, the members of Country Promenaders, extend our sincere
sympathy to her devoted husband, John. Together they served as officers
of our club, doing more than their share to keep the club a friendly,
growing organizations.
Thanks to Valerie/Bob Neher for the second successful Pot Luck Supper.
Our third annual Mystery Bus Ride is now history. Our grand finale for
this year-our club picnic will be the first Sunday in June at Merrill Park
in Iselin, rain or shine. Members & their families always have an exhausting good time. Between tips square dancing to Marty Clifford, there's
usually rousing volleyball & baseball games intermingled with vast amounts
of good food.

Gosh & Golly Gee are we proud & happy! We had our biggest crowd ever,
8 sets, at our Mini-Weekend in the Catskills in March. You should have
heard Mike & John Cleary calling simultaneously- hard to tell them apart.
Mike's 8 month old Jennifer joined us-what a doll. She'll be dancing before we know it! Bob/Lynne Gordon, as usual, did a superb job cueing the
rounds, & Bob displayed his skill as a magician. All enjoyed dancing to
Bill Heyman, our guest caller. The food was superb as always & we could
not have asked for nicer weather, for a change! Sign up now for our fall
Mini weekend when you join our happy friendly group and see for yourself
what we've been bragging about! Call for directions or information. New
graduates ALWAYS welcome. Remember we dance in May and then not until
October for the weekend. Dave/Dot Pinand AepoAteu

We are starting to prepare for the annual Flemington Fair invitational
S/D competition, held in late August. We should have at least two sets
especially by our
competing this year - and with great enthusiasm
new graduates; we expect to do very well. We ALWAYS have a good time.
Last year, we took first place - kinda hard to top that!
Our recent barn dance/demonstration, organized by Marie Kerwin, for a
group of retarded citizens in Bloomfield was a great success! We introduced them to some basic S/D calls & they taught us some new line dances.
A great time was had by all! Other recent demonstrations included several
local schools. Hope to see you all at the summer dances!

This issue the SQUARE PINCUSHION
takes a good look at SLEEVES....
Pretty dresses go unworn all
because the sleeves bind or cut due to improper fit or
planning. A sleeve that is tight and smooth does not wear
well on the dance floor. You raise your arm to do a 'star
thru' and it either binds or tears. Spend a little time in
planning what sleeve to use and how it will wear when dancing and you'll get lots more mileage from that dress.
Sleeve choices are many-we'll discuss a few to help you.
There's the 'cap' sleeve
not cut onto the bodice but a
separate piece eased or gathered to fit
the upper part of the armhole (fig. 1)

Then there's the 'cape' sleeve

most often found in raglan styles.

FIG. 2
i-uffed sleeves have been around for generations but are
quite comfortable to wear. Just be
sure the elastic edges are soft and
not too tight or they won't be so
comfortable either. (fig. 3)
A newer addition to the family of sleeves in recent years
has been the'petal'sleeve. Very
feminine and quite comfy,too.(fig.4)
To adapt your puffed sleeve pattern
here's how... Make a tracing (twice)
of tissue or other paper. Draw a
gentle curve as in fig.5. Cut out.
FIG. 5
Repeat with 2nd pattern only in

require 2 pieces of fabric cut from

Repeat with pices'B'.Join underarm seam l see fig.?. Overlap
A over B to fit the upper curve, then set in your sleeve in
the armhole normally. Repeat other sleeve using B over A.
This is kind of tricky so if you have a question feel free
to call me (687-0342) evenings or weekends please.
-
Long or 3/4 sleeves, with added fullness are great when
temperatures dip. If you make them a little longer and in
place of the cuff you put a casing and insert elastic,
you can slide them up a bit if more stretch is needed while
dancing.
There you have a few styles to start you thinking. These
can all be adapted in one way or another. Trimmed or plain,

QUARTERLY SELECTIONS COMMITTEE REPORT
The International Association
of Square Dance Callers
For the quarter beginning April 1, CALLERLAB
has selected one new movement for use in workshops at MS Dances....written
RELEASE RECYCLE. From a 1/4 Tag formation, the ends of
by Dick Kenyon
the Right Hand Wave and the outside Boys (beaus) extend to the dancer
ahead of them and all finish like a RECYCLE. Ends in a starting Double
Pass Thru formation. Timing is 6 steps. For the majority of clubs, this
call should be used with standard set-ups only (girl on boy's right). For
groups that can handle variations of Recycle, this call can be used from
a variety of Boy-Girl arrangements. There will be no QS chosen for the
summer months. It is recommended callers feature some of the calls from
the Mainstream list they haven't used too frequently in the past.
