Mail Delivery Concerns
The possible closure of Australia
Post’s mail sorting centre in Bendigo
and redirecting its mail to be sorted in
Dandenong is causing concern.
Kyneton residents and businesses may
soon not be able to expect next day
delivery of mail posted in the local mail
only slot at the Kyneton Post Office.
For some time mail posted in the local
only slot at the Kyneton Post Office
has been sent to Bendigo for sorting
and residents have found that next day
delivery for local mail lodged at the
Post Office has not been as reliable as
it used to be.
If Kyneton’s local mail is to be sent to
Dandenong, sorted there, and then
returned to Kyneton there is concern
that a minimum period of two days
might pass before local mail is
delivered in Kyneton.
Kyneton Airfield
The Council is about to undertake an
assessment of the Kyneton Airfield to
identify challenges and opportunities
and to determine its long term benefit
to the local community.
$30,000 for the development of an
economic opportunities analysis for
the Kyneton Airfield has been secured
following a funding application to the
Victorian Government.
Extensive community consultation
with key stakeholders and residents
will commence in November.

$500,000 Promised for Park
Branch’s First Parliamentarian
Kyneton Community Park organisers
have welcomed a $500,000 funding
commitment made by the now
Environment Minister in the new
federal government Greg Hunt.
Mr Hunt committed the Coalition if
elected to contribute $500,000
towards construction of the proposed
Park when he visited its site in the
Kyneton Botanic Gardens in the latter
days of the federal election campaign.
Kyneton Community Park President
Amy Cockroft said that it was
particularly pleasing that Mr Hunt had
committed at the Kyneton visit to
funding being available on July 1 2014.
“Our dream of building a world-class
park in Kyneton is now on its way to
becoming a reality” Amy said.
Despite the overall result of the Sept 7
Federal Election members of the
Kyneton ALP Branch had good reason
to smile.
Labor Candidate Lisa Chesters, a
member of the Kyneton Labor Branch
since 2010, had won the local Federal
Seat of Bendigo.
Lisa resided in Kyneton from 2010 to
2012 and remains a member and
regularly attends Branch meetings.
Although Kyneton ALP Branch
members have stood for Parliament in
previous elections Lisa is the first
Branch member to be elected to
Parliament.
Ms Chesters won the 2 party
preferred vote at both Kyneton
booths taking 54% at the Sports &
Aquatic Centre and 50.1% at the
Sacred Heart booth.
The introduction of two Kyneton
booths did reduce waiting times
somewhat. 1811 formal votes were
cast at the Sports and Aquatic Centre
and 1293 at Sacred Heart.
The overall result for the Bendigo seat
saw Lisa Chesters with 51.3% and
Liberal Greg Bickley with 48.7% 2
party preferred.
Lisa attended a celebration with local
Branch members in Kyneton on
Saturday October 12 before travelling
to Canberra to attend the Labor
leadership Caucus.

I have found my first
12 months as one of

the Macedon Ranges
Shire Council both
c h a l le n g in g
an d
rewarding.
My first aim in this
time has been to try
to achieve solid strategic planning by
council, planning decisions that reflect
the desires of the communities of
which we are part of; and to
encourage and direct dist ant
government departments and other
agencies to understand the beauty and
uniqueness of the region.
Secondly: I promised to try to improve
openness, honesty and transparency in
all that council does.
Thirdly: I want to improve community
engagement: where you feel
encouraged to comment on things and
feel that your voice is listened to.
These three areas have been my major
focus in this last year, and I appreciate
the support you, the Shire community,
has given me in my endeavors to
represent you. I hope that you think
that I am on my way to achieving these
aims and keeping these promises.
Even if you have been disappointed
with outcomes in the past, I encourage
you to continue to write to and ring
your Councillors to let them know
what you like and do not like about
the direction our Shire is taking.
We are here to represent you, but we
cannot do this unless you tell us what
you want from your Council, and what
you think about what we are doing.

few weeks to see what issues you can
comment on and look at Council
meeting agendas on the 4th Monday of
the month and ring us before the
Council meeting that occurs 2 days
later to let us know your concerns.
Together we can keep our Shire the
amazing place that it is today, where
people feel happy, healthy and safe, in
the knowledge that what we all cherish
about where we live and work will not
be lost.

Light Horse Monument
The Kyneton Light Horse Monument
Group Inc initially led by Emile Cox
was formed in July 2006 with the aim
of raising funds to erect a suitable
monument to acknowledge Kyneton as
the birthplace of the Australian Light Horse.
The statue and plinth is now
completed and is awaiting outcome of
considerations of the Macedon Ranges
Council for its permanent site in
Kyneton. Further donations are
needed for its installation and these
can be made to the group at C/Kyneton RSL or Jack Willmott, Leo
Ramsdale or Secretary Larina Strauch.
Outdoor Movie Night
The Carlsruhe Fire Brigade will be
hosting an outdoor movie night Sat
Nov 23. The feature movie will be
"Despicable Me 2".
Residents wishing to support the
brigade should pack up their family,
chairs, blankets and picnic dinner and
head to the Carlsruhe Annex of
Woodend Primary School, Nicholson
St, Carlsruhe.
The gate will open at 6.30pm and the
movie will start approx 8pm.

The Kyneton Light-Horse Monument
Kyneton Wine Show & Dinner
Once again, local wines will be
showcased at the Kyneton Agricultural
Society’s ninth annual Wine Show to
be held in the Campaspe Room at
NMIT Kyneton Park, Campaspe Place,
Kyneton, on Sat Oct 26.
All entry wines will be available for
diners to taste at a dinner the same
night featuring a gourmet meal
carefully chosen to enhance the
produce of our local region.
Wines entered into the show
represent the best and brightest wines
from the Macedon, Heathcote, Ballarat
and Bendigo wine regions as well as
many other wines from all over the
state.
All wine show winners will be
announced during the evening.
The wines will be complimented by a
fabulous feast of excellent regional
produce prepared by talented local
caterers, Piper St. Food Co.

Funds raised from the sale of the book
will be used to assist with the
installation of the Kyneton Light-Horse
Monument.
2013 Kyneton Cup
On Wed Nov 6, a local public holiday,
the Kyneton Cup will be run and won.
Thousands of patrons attend the Cup
at Kyneton’s picturesque course NMIT
Kyneton Park.

Council’s Hanging Rock Decision
In August Kyneton Connect
editorialised “….many citizens who
seek to have input into Council
decision making have a perception of
lack of respect (from the Council) for
their views, experience and
expertise”
Kyneton Connect welcomed the
Council’s preparedness to discuss
with a dismissed volunteer his reinstatement as “…a first step towards
a more constructive and inclusive
approach to the input of the
residents of the Shire”.
We spoke too soon.
Consultation with residents remains
Council’s Achille’s heel.
Deciding, even in principle, to allow
significant private development on
Council owned land adjacent to the
Rock originally purchased to protect
this Shire’s greatest natural asset
from such development, is a decision
that should not have been taken
without wide prior community
discussion and consultation.
Kyneton Connect urges the Council to
do as it did with the volunteer:
backtrack, admit a mistake in process,
rescind its Hanging Rock decision and
undertake genuine consultation with
the community about the desirability
of development, especially private
development on the Council owned
land adjacent to Hanging Rock.

Men’s Shed Call for Help
With Cobaw Community Health’s
plans to sell their Mollison Place site
at Kyneton, the Men’s Shed is looking
for a new home.
The organisation’s Board and
Management are committed to
ensuring that the facility will continue
in a new location and are working
with the participants of the Shed to
minimise the impact of the move.
Alternative sites are being
investigated however the search is
still ongoing.
The participants of the Shed are
hoping that someone might know of a
small piece of land close to Kyneton
where a new shed might be built.

the Combined Services Dinner at the

Connections Daffodil & Arts Festival
and Kyneton CFA & Ladies Auxiliary.
Guest speaker was Justice Jack
Forrest of the Supreme Court of
Victoria and a former local horse
trainer.
Justice Forrest gave a spirited
endorsement of the role of juries in
both civil and criminal cases.
He also explained the difficulties that
the pervasive nature of the internet
and social media are having in
achieving a fair trial.
Justice Forrest is currently hearing
the Kilmore – Kinglake Black
Saturday Class Action mega trial.
Two nights earlier the Rotary Club
had continued its support for the
mental health of our young people by
conducting its Tricky Business – Rock
and Roll Dance’ and donating all the
profits to Live4Life.

Picnic in the Park
Sunday Nov 24 (between 10 and 2pm)
promises to be a day of Spring fun
with Kyneton Community Park’s
annual Picnic in the Park.
This year’s event will showcase
Kyneton’s muscle with its annual
community Tug-of-War.
There will be free entertainment
including live music and children’s
games.
Nola Poor Boy and the Dhaba Curry
Van and sausage sizzle will keep
tummies full.
All that is needed is your picnic rug
and a smile.
The Kyneton Tug-o-War Challenge is
open to all ages including juniors.
Teams of 7 can be registered for $50,
or $30 early birds who register prior

"Waterlilies”
The Friends of the Kyneton Botanical
Gardens will host a Garden Ramble
when garden lovers can visit beautiful
local gardens on Sun November 24.
Garden visitors can enjoy a tour of the
Kyneton Botanic Gardens when they

and 10.30am and a delicious Basket
Luncheon is included in the day’s
package.
The Gardens to open for the Ramble

Firth Park East Trentham, the Kyneton
District Trail Riders Club next ride is
to be to the Blackwood Pub for a very
enjoyable social get together over

organisation for its end of year break
up which takes in the whole weekend
of Nov 23 & 24, when the riders set
up camp enjoy a barbecue, drinks and
music into the night wake up to an
appetising barbecue breakfast &
another great day of riding.
KDTR Committee meetings are held
every month commencing at 7.30pm
at the Trentham Pub in the Gwyneth
Wisewould Room. All welcome to

Organising a Practical Self-Defence
Program for women is a new initiative
of the Zonta Club in Kyneton.
“This course is timely as recent events
have led to concerns by women

Financial Challenge for Festival
Although 2013 saw an extremely
successful, very well attended Kyneton
Daffodil and Arts Festival and a Parade
widely proclaimed as the best ever,
changes in VicRoads regulations and
other factors have significantly
increased the cost of conducting the
annual 11 day event to the wholly
volunteer organising Committee.
New VicRoads regulations for road
closures required a road closure plan
to be prepared by a professional firm
and for qualified personnel to oversee
the road closures necessary to
conduct the Grand Parade and Street
Fair.
In the past the Council had been able
to provide qualified staff for the road
closures free of charge but this year a
month or two prior to the Festival the
Council advised the Committee it was
unable to provide suitably qualified staff
to meet VicRoads requirements, but
were prepared to assist in partially
funding the cost of hiring a traffic
management company to oversee the
road closures for the Parade and Fair
on the final day of the Festival.
“Hiring a traffic management company
to oversee road closures on Parade
and Fair day cost an additional $3700
this year” Festival President Ann
Paterson said. “Festival Venue hire
expense to the Committee was more
than $8000 alone and insurance
around $3000 – and this is before
payments for Parade and Fair day
essentials such as bands, attractions,
children’s activities and prizes” Ann
said.
“Contributions from our very
generous sponsors and from the
Council are significant in helping our
Committee meet the costs of running
the Festival which attracts thousands of
visitors to Kyneton every year and is
also a major community celebration.
“These contributions are
supplemented by weeks of fundraising
by our small band of volunteers who
conduct sausage sizzles, sell raffle
tickets, and sell bulbs to help make
ends meet.
“We want Kyneton’s wonderful
Festival to continue but we will need
to review what we do and we
desperately need more hands to help
us with our work and hope that they
will come forward when the Festival’s
AGM is held in the Kyneton Mechanics
Institute at 7.30pm on Tuesday Dec 3”

Nominated for Award
Kyneton Community and Learning
Centre was thrilled to be nominated
for its very successful Flexible Learning
Options Program as one of three
finalists in the recent Victorian Learn
Local Awards.
The Centre has also received a $2000
grant from the Council’s Community
Funding Scheme to install, along the
driveway at the Centre, a number of
large mural panels which will be
painted by local Primary School
children.
The Term 4 Brochure is now available
and this lists a large number of learning
and interest based opportunities for
interested community members. The
Brochures are available from the
Centre at 34 Mollison St .
The Centre’s Committee is always
looking for community members who
are keen to join its Committee of
Management (COM). They would
welcome members with experience in
finance, management and/or
communication knowledge and skills
and a real interest in working for their
community in a meaningful and
rewarding way.
There is also a wide variety of
volunteer opportunities. People
interested in volunteering as a literacy
tutor assistant or a youth program
assistant, admin assistant, gardener or
community lunch helper or in helping
to organise activities at the Centre are

Cobaw’s 2013 AGM
The Cobaw Community Health AGM
will be held at the Romsey Community
Hub at 1:30- 3pm on Wed Nov 13.
It will commence with a Welcome and
Panel Discussion about the rapidly
changing policy environment Cobaw is
working in and the implications for our
future. The panel will comprise three
people including a CEO and Board
Chair of similar organisations and a
Senior Policy Officer from the
Victorian Healthcare Association.
After the discussion the more formal
business of the AGM will follow.
The Board feels this is a great chance
for members and stakeholders to
understand the options available for
Cobaw Community Health’s future.

Ian Marks Liqour outlet at 63 High St
Kyneton has changed hands.
New owners Leo Zhu and Ella Cheng
took over at the end of August and will
run the business as an independent
operation.
Leo and Ella now live in Kyneton.
In addition to the broad range of stock
previously offered by the store Leo
and Ella aim to stock as many local
wines and beers as possible.
Super Sushi Expands
It is two and a half years since James
and Katrina Pilbeam opened their sushi
shop Super Sushi at 109 Mollison St.
August brought some changes to Super
Sushi with the remodelling of the
kitchen to install a state of the art wok
stove and to introduce noodles to the
menu.
Katrina has also welcomed Hing &
Sammi Chow to the staff. They come
with a abundance of knowledge and
experience within the industry having
worked at a renowned noodle shop in
the UK.
Super Sushi's menu now includes
Japanese curries, soups, salads, laksa ,
Nori rolls, noodles in a box and a
variety of entrees.

— Towards 2014
Club President Rob Waters advises
that Kyneton is making strong progress
as it re-builds its senior football team
for the 2014 season.
Already ten players have put pen to
paper confirming they will play for the
Tigers.
The bulk of the team is expected to be
signed up in the next two weeks with
new coach Mark Adamson assembling
his squad ahead of schedule.
The Tigers have pulled off a recruiting
coup with conformation top
midfielders Ryan Carraffa and Michael
Rainey will be at the club next year.
The pair have been team leaders at
Blackburn for many years in the strong
Eastern League. Last year they played
for Old Carey in the A grade
Amateurs.
Both are very excited to be a part of
the Tigers revival and are looking
forward to get stuck into pre-season
training when it starts next month.
Kyneton will make more
announcements on recruits in the next
few weeks. The bulk of its squad is
expected to have signed on by the time
pre-season training begins.

The 6th Free Christmas Lunch
The Council’s Cultural Development
Unit is working with Cobaw
Community Health to provide a free
Christmas Day lunch in the Kyneton
Town Hall. The lunch starts at 11.30
am and goes through until 2.00 pm. It’s
an opportunity for people to come
along and enjoy the company of others
over a meal and have some fun with
entertainment provided.
This is an alcohol free event. Transport
can be provided for people who
cannot get there themselves.

An Iron in the Fire Exhibition
Volunteer Robyn Clarton with the Museum’s
Bronwyn Wilson
The Kyneton Museum’s current
exhibition, “An Iron in the Fire”,
displays an amazing array of irons of all
shapes and sizes. It features irons on
loan from Victorian members of The
Australian Iron Collectors Association
together with irons from the museum
collection. Discover sad irons, crimping
irons, tailors irons, trivets and many
more interesting unique and unusual
irons and learn about their history.
The Exhibition commenced on Oct 4
and will finish on Jan 26 2014.
The Museum is open 11–4pm Fri-Mon.
History Week 2013
During History Week (Oct 20-27)
Kyneton Historical Society will
showcase aspects of Kyneton’s History
in three different locations.
The shop window at 74 Piper St will
display the agricultural history of
Kyneton and district. From Minute
books, invoices, show ribbons and
photos – viewers will be able to step
back into a farming legacy that will
evoke memories of a time gone by.
Aesop’s Attic Shop Window at 24a
High St will showcase items from the
former Shire of Kyneton Records that
the society has now taken into care.
Again the emphasis is on what is
historical and how important they are
for family researchers. The shop is
open 7 days a week and informational
material will be available for those
interested in the Historical Society.
Open house at 75 Piper St: the Society
will open their archives and collection.
Old film footages of the past now on
DVDs will be shown on a loop along
with a slide show of the photographic
collection.
The Society hopes the displays may
alert people to think before they toss
things into the bin – they may be items
they could get the Society to check to
see if they should be preserved as part
of the town’s heritage.
Retirement of Rev Phil Lyles
Phil Lyles, who has been the minister
of the five congregations (Kyneton,
Barfold, Metcalfe, Mia Mia & Sutton
Grange) of the Mia Mia–Kyneton
Uniting Church for the past six years is
concluding this ministry on Sun Oct 27
at the 10am service in Kyneton and
also retiring on Oct 31.
Phil and his wife, Joyce came to
Kyneton after a two year working
holiday in Scotland. Phil had previously
served the Allansford and Pyramid Hill
congregations. He had also been a
Resource Minister to the Northern
Plains Ministry, now known as the
Nardoo Mission Area, in a remote area
of northern Victoria.
Reverend Phil has been active in the
church’s Christian life and has been an
active community member. He is
currently President of the Kyneton
RSL. The RSL has been a passion of his
since his time of serving with the Navy.
Phil is also a Master Mason of the
Kyneton Masonic Lodge.
Phil and Joyce have found the
surroundings of the Macedon Ranges
to be so comfortable and friendly that
they have decided to stay in Kyneton.
The Uniting Church congregation
thanks Phil and Joyce for their
dedication to their ministry in the Mia
Mia–Kyneton Uniting Church and
wishes both a future of doing other
things in life that give them fulfilment.

Kyneton Secondary and VESKI
Kyneton Secondary College is one of
three schools invited to participate in
an exciting VESKI program.
VESKI, Victorian Endowment for
Science, Knowledge and Innovation,
recognises that research is vital to the
economy of Victoria and its major role
is to attract leading researchers across
the areas of science, mathematics,
engineering and technology. It has
expanded its role to lift participation
and interest in these areas in
secondary schools. This will be
achieved through the inspiring students
and teachers program.
VESKI has the connections and ability
to link the College’s students to
cutting edge researchers in a range of
areas, arrange visits to world class
institutions and provide activities and
resources to engage students and
support teachers with professional
development.
Already KSC students have benefitted
from this program through a day at the
Australian Synchrotron, a tour of the
Walter & Eliza Hall Institute and being
present at the Graeme Clark Oration
for 2013 on the topic of Global Health,
Economic Growth and the end of
Absolute Poverty.
For the remainder of the year
members of VESKI and science staff at
the College will be planning the
implementation of activities into next
year’s curriculum supported by
universities, Melbourne museum and a
number of other organisations.

Sexting Concerns Police
Detectives from the Central Victoria
Sexual Offences and Child Abuse
Investigation Team are becoming
increasingly concerned with the
transmission of indecent images via
smart phones, computer and social
media platforms.
This follows a current investigation
involving two 17 year old boys who are
being investigated for possessing child
pornography and procurement of a
minor for child pornography after their
phones were seized from a Macedon
Ranges Secondary School.
Hundreds of images are being examined
and as a result a number of young
female students have been identified
and spoken to by police.
Police believe the issue to be wide
spread and at 'epidemic' proportions
and despite educational lectures and
awareness campaigns both boys and
girls continue to ignore advice
provided.
It is an offence for a person to possess
images of a person who is or appears
to be under the age of 18 years and is
engaged in sexual activity or in an
indecent context or manner.
Possessing child pornography carries a
maximum penalty of five years
imprisonment and procurement of a
minor for child pornography carries a
maximum of ten years imprisonment.
Police urge parents to discuss the issue
with their children.

Kyneton resident Bill Lotherington, an
80 year old, was recently placed first in
the Masters Category of the Australia
Drug Free Power Lifting Association
National Championships in Renmark
SA.
Bill commenced weightlifting when he
was in his 70’s.
Bill who trains at the Eclipse Gym set
world records in his age/weight
category in Squat, Bench Press and
Dead-lift and is now the Australian
National Champion and world record
holder.

Food Festival allowing residents and
visitors to taste the wines and share
the passions of the local winemakers
and restaurateurs.
This year’s Budburst takes place on the
weekend of Nov 16 and 17.
A $15 tasting glass can be purchased
from any of the 20 or more
participating wineries across the
Macedon Ranges.
Two dinners featuring local wines and
great food will be held at Kyneton
restaurants on the evening of Fri Nov
15 – one at Mr Carsisi and the other at
the Royal George Hotel.

Roll Up to the Kyneton Show
On November 15 & 16 the gates of the
Kyneton Showgrounds will open for
the 2013 Kyneton Agricultural Show.
The Show kicks off with the Friday
Night Show Carnival starting at 5.30pm
with this year’s Kyneton Idol finals in
full swing in the Football Club Rooms.
The 2013 Ute Muster will see the
hottest and best dressed utes
competing and those attending the
night carnival can look forward to
entertainment by the Hubcats band on
the oval and a stunning fire works
display.
The theme for the Saturday Show Day
is Bikes Bikes Bikes, with the O’Sullivan
& Benn Bike Emporium in the
Community Area. Here kids big and
small can have some fun with some
standard and unusual bikes in this
interactive display which celebrates all
things about bikes. Or if chilling out is
more your style, make your own
smoothie with a bike - you will have to
come to see how.
The Free Zone for Kids will be part of
the Community Area again during the
Saturday show carnival. With Farmer
Darryl and his animal friends, pony
rides, Birds of Prey, a flying fox,
Dazzling Dan the Magic Man, puppet
making, train rides, woodwork &
painting in the kids tent, Kyneton
Transition Hub and Landcare .....
there’s just so much to do for
everyone. And the whole Community
Area is free.
The Master Cook Off Tent will be
buzzing again with Kyneton Secondary
College and Sacred Heart College
cooking for hundreds of dollars of
prize money using items from their
“mystery box”.
And while there
visitors can taste test the entries from
this year’s Kyneton Jambouree.
The famous Treasure Hunt Showbag
will again be on sale at the front gate,
but get in quick as there are limited
numbers available.
Horses, cattle, dogs, poultry, rabbits,
sheep, Watts Pavilion full of arts &
craft and so much more will be there
to see.
There are loads of fun and fancy things
that every member of the family can
enter or participate in at this years
show.

Tractor Trek
Kyneton Vehicle Appreciation Society
conducted their annual tractor trek on
Sun Oct 13. Taking part were 14
tractors of various 50'sand 60's models,
Ferguson's and David Brown's. They
completed a 32km Trek visiting various
historic sites between Kyneton and
Malmsbury.
Participants came from as far afield as
Moyston, Dunolly, Rochester
Maryborough and Bealiba and included
local enthusiasts.
