Transcending an “Artless Tradition”
Seeing is Believing: A History of Jewish Art
Judaism has been historically seen as an "artless tradition" due to the prohibition of
"graven images" by the Torah, and anti-Semitic barriers in artists' guilds. The modern
Jewish art movement began in the mid-19th century.
Join us for a visual presentation of the art of prominent Jewish artists of the time, such as
Moritz Daniel Oppenheim, Isidor Kauffman, and Marc Chagall.

2014 ANNUAL CAMPAIGN STORY OF THE MONTH
“Rebuilding a Family and a Future”
Judith never expected retirement to be so
much work. At the age of 67, after living alone
for 10 years following her husband's death, she
was awarded custody of her five teenage
grandchildren. After a tumultuous period of
investigation, the state had determined their
mother was unfit and all five moved into her
one–bedroom, one–bath apartment. "I knew
that I had their support and that I could really
do this"
Judith initially hoped she'd be able to support
her grandchildren, both financially and emotionally, which she now terms
"naive." She soon came to realize she would need assistance. "I needed
a support group that was big enough to help me and the children, but I
couldn't go to a temple because I wasn't a member anywhere," she
says, "I kept reading about Jewish Federation and I heard so many good
things, so I called them."
Federation provided the family with food when Judith wasn't able to
afford it, and offered the children school supplies and clothing. "I knew
that I had their support and that I could really do this," said Judith. "I
could raise these five children and make productive people out of them."

A PLACE AT THE TABLE
With 90 in attendance, the sanctuary at Douglas Avenue United Methodist
Church was full with interested and concerned community members to listen
to Matt Gross, Deputy Director for Bread for the World, and Kaleigh
Friend, Public Relations Director at the Central Illinois Food Bank and enjoy a showing of the documentary film, A Place at the Table.
Matt Gross & Lisa Stone
The film highlights food insecurity, poverty and health issues of 50 million
Americans. This joint program of the Jewish Community Relations Council,
three area churches, Slow Food, Gen H, Central Illinois Food Bank and Bread for the World was a successful
joint venture with hopes that our community members take interest in this topic of need.
