It’s time to celebrate National
Nurses Week, observed each year
from May 6 to 12, Florence
Nightingale’s birthday. Although it’s
an official special event sanctioned
by the American Nurses Association,
nurses and others in the industry say
one week is not enough to celebrate
the hard work and dedication of
nursing staff throughout the country.
Traditionally, National Nurses
Week is devoted to highlighting the
diverse ways in which registered
nurses (R.N.s), the largest healthcare
profession, are working to improve
health care. From bedside nursing in
hospitals and long-term care facilities
to the halls of research institutions,
the depth and breadth of the nursing
profession is meeting the expanding
healthcare needs of American
society. In honor of National Nurses
Week and R.N. Recognition Day,
registered nurses around the country
are encouraged to wear the official
R.N. Pin.
Jersey City Medical Center, in
Jersey City, celebrates its nurses by
investing in retention programs. The
hospital launched four employee
councils for process improvement.
Each council has a representative
and voice from the nursing staff. The
four councils include professional
practice, recruitment and retention,
research and performance improvement. “This is a key for retention
because nurses want to be involved”
says Maureen Corrado, director of
professional recruitment. One
outcome of the recruitment and
retention council was a new program
called Precious Moments. The
purpose of the program was to
create a quiet and secure room in the
hospital where nurses on any shift
can utilize massage chairs, yoga mats
and other relaxation tools to
recharge. Precious Moments was
recently launched during National
Nurses Week and the official ribboncutting ceremony took place May 6.
Jersey City Medical Center also
invests heavily in growth opportunities for its nurses. The hospital offers
tuition reimbursement and training
programs, such as Earn & Learn for
new hires, that lasts for 12 to 16
weeks to assist in the transition from
classroom to bedside. The medical

Q: I’ve read your column for years
and respect your judgment. I’m trying to
relocate, but it’s nearly impossible to get
interviews in the state to which I intend
to move. On major job boards, many listings
say, “local candidates only.” I tried contacting one to ask why they wouldn’t consider
someone who would pay their own relocation costs, but never got a reply. Can you
shed some light on this? Do you have any
other advice for those wishing to relocate?
This is an issue that’s becoming more
prominent and, therefore, more important, to a
growing number of Americans, so I’m glad you
put it forward.
For numerous reasons, Americans are more
mobile than ever. Among the factors are:
enrolling in schools (undergraduate, graduate
or post-graduate) away from home; earning a
degree in an industry centered in, or doing well,
in other regions (oil, film, construction); being a
“trailing spouse,” partner or significant other;

warmer climate; or simply wanting to start over.
While these are legitimate relocation reasons,
let’s be clear: Current workplace conditions are far
less than favorable when you’re staying at home,
let alone moving. So, if you’re not moving out of
necessity, this is hardly the time to do it out of whim
or because you’re just fed up where you are.
In short, if the employment picture is tough in
your market, what makes you think it’s any better
somewhere else? On the other side of the coin,
since employers have access to plenty of candidates
already in their areas, can you understand why they
don’t feel the urgency to call you?
OK, that said, let’s say you need to relocate. There
are, for sure, some things you can do to make this a
fair game, so to speak.
First, do your research. Is your targeted city or
region a hospitable place? What’s the job picture?
Are there industries or professions for which you’re
qualified that are flourishing there? Look at the
economic forecast, cost of living, housing, climate
and cultural environment. These may not be directly
job-related, but will play heavily on your overall longterm career and life goals. Once you move, you
don’t want to have to do it again, do you?

More directly related to your career and your
question about local candidates, devise a strategy
and action plan for the move, including a targeted
date. Plan two scouting trips: the first to include
exploring the area, informational interviews, and
investigating housing, schools and other critical life
factors; the second, a round of “final” interviews.
This is where you establish yourself as a local candidate. If you know someone in the area with whom
you’ll stay on your scouting trips, ask permission to
use that address as your temporary one.
Now your cover letter can honestly state you’re
in the final stages of relocating, it will happen by a
certain date, you can be reached at the following
interim address and phone, and you’re planning to
be in town for interviews during a certain time (be
specific). Voila! You’re a local candidate — and
legitimately so — and you make it easier for a hiring
manager to want to call you, considering, of course,
that your professional credentials are good.
There’s more to do. On sites like the U.S.
Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics
(www.bls.gov), especially the Occupational Outlook
Handbook, you’ll find a rich lode of regional information about job prospects. “Don’t leave home without
it,” to borrow an apt phrase.
As you would in your current market, make a list
of companies for which you’d like to work and
mount the same kind of campaign you would if you
weren’t moving. This, and networking, is how you’ll

now being used to help surgeons
perform procedures with minimal
invasion, leading to less inpatient
programs. According to Saint
Barnabas Health Care System,
Newark Beth Israel Hospital is the

New Jersey. “Nurses who want to
take their experience to the next
level have plenty of options for
growth areas,” added DiElmo.
Chilton Memorial Hospital, in
Pompton Plains, also embraces
new technology to train and
retain its nursing staff. The
hospital recently purchased
new ergonomically designed
beds equipped with safety features for inpatient units to assist
nurses. Chilton also introduced

Additionally, relocating is when headhunters can
play big for you. I’ve always said that a good
recruiter is a strong ally. In your situation, it goes
without saying. Identifying one or two real good
ones should be a very high priority for you. Use
either the Internet or directories which you can
purchase or access in your library.
While using third parties, how about temp agencies? I’ve also advocated for temping as a smart job
search strategy, so why shouldn’t it work for the
relocating candidate, especially since many temp
firms are national? If they like you here, you might
have a real voice there, right? Just avoid temping at
a lower level than your current job. That’s a recipe
for frustration and, ultimately, failure.
Further, although the number of job seekers who
get their jobs through the local paper’s classified
section is not what it used to be, it is still important
to check this regularly, and they’re all online.
Another idea: Search for career fairs in the area
and coordinate a trip around one or more fairs.
Imagine the impact on a company’s recruiter when
you introduce yourself and say that you’re relocating, you identified them as a company you’d like to
work for, and you came in to meet them at the fair.
Job searches require multi-pronged approaches,
even when not relocating, which should explain why
it’s even more important when you’re moving. Now,
as a “local” candidate, you can mount just as com-
