Robin’s Nest
By Robin George
Hello everyone, or should I say Hola!! We have
moved to a new meeting place to better
accommodate you. We tried Celia’s restaurant
last month and the consensus of the members
attending was the choice was excellent. I
received thumbs up about the food, service and
parking. Again we had a little trouble with the
sound as the very back of the room had a hard
time hearing. I’m impressed that some wanted
to listen so I will work on the sound. We had 83
attendees and over 35+ cars. Most parked where I had coned off an area and the sight of our
vehicles parked as a group was impressive. During the evening the manager kept checking
with me and I with him to make sure neither party
had any problems. So if anyone has any
problems or any suggestions please let me know.
Thank you for your attendance as we continue to
be the best car club in Northern California.
Remember if you can’t make it to the Bear Valley Anniversary Celebration we still are continuing
to celebrate our 20th year at Carmichael Park on October 17th. We have the local hall for our
party with prizes, cars from Elk Grove Mazda, and of course free fun. Please plan to join us.
Please keep your eye on the web page for all the new events and changes as this year comes
to a close. We try to keep people informed and up to date. By all means have fun. We thank
Ellen Frosch for leading a group after the General Meeting to watch the Meteor Showers over at
Latrobe School. Leading a large group of cars (23) in the dark can be quite daunting. It was fun
and very dark as we watched the occasional meteor streak across the sky. It was also a chance
for our amateur astronomers to teach us about the heavens. If there something or place you
would like to share with the club, let us know and we will go.
For those going to Bear Valley you must sign up for the FunkHanna. We have been working
hard to provide a challenging yet user friendly course. It’s easy, the judges have no clue and
there are some great awards. It won’t hurt and only take a couple of hours at the most.
See you on the 9th at the General Meeting.

Overheard at a SAMOA meeting:
Last night, my kids and I were sitting in the living room and i said to them, "I never want to live in
a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens,
just pull the plug."
They got up, unplugged the Computer, and threw out my wine!

20th Birthday Party Update
By Mike DeLaurentis
As of this writing, there are two rooms available at the Lodge for the entire weekend. Two
cancellations have resulted in “room at the inn” so if you have been on the fence about
attending, decided not to attend when you heard the Lodge was full or know someone whom
you think would enjoy themselves, now is the time to make that hotel reservations by calling the
Bear Valley Lodge at 209.753.2327 and then completing and submitting the SAMOA registration
form found on our website.
Plans continue to come together as we are less than a month away from the biggest event in
the club’s history. (At least by my way of thinking.) This past month your 20th Anniversary
Committee:

Progressive Run
By Mike DeLaurentis
On August 21st SAMOA did it’s first ever Progressive Run event. We drove between Rancho
Cordova and Cool picking up SAMOANs as we went. We ended up stopping at seven different
locations picking up nine cars and 17 SAMOANs and guests. At the conclusion we came back to our
house for home-made ice cream and beverages. Almost everyone had a chance to lead a group and
after getting out of the urban areas we hit some nice Miata roads.
Long time (but MIA as of late) members Gundi and Gary Bechthold were along and are still enjoying
motor-homing around the country. Jo Freeman (and guest Veronica) chose this to be her first
SAMOA run. Fran Rowell is very familiar with Rt 49 and Salmon Falls Road and set a pretty fast
pace. Clay Cowan slowed us down to pass a sobriety checkpoint – on the other side of the road –
then continued leading us through some great roads between Auburn and Cool. Filling out the pack
was Rod Gonzalez, The Bacons, Diana Loo and guest Phil, and the Hahns,
Thanks for all who participated.

SAMOA History Part 8:
Many Changes during 1999
By Jeanne George
This is the 8th in the series of a 20 year review of SAMOA. Parts 1-7 can be found on the webpage in
the February through August Miatatudes newsletters.
January 1999: Well we were elected! Robin is President and I took on Events. Off and running we
organized things. Robin chose “From Robin’s Nest” for his monthly newsletter column to keep
members informed and I named my Events column the “Co-pilot Corner”.
On January 2nd, we hosted our second event ever and named it the “Hangover Run”. Being the day
after the New Year, short notice, and fog we were surprised when 24 people and 17 cars arrived.
Many with their tops down and others like us wimps, top up and heater on, warm and cozy.
Robin being the leader that he is (1) told the females to go to the bathroom before the drivers meeting
(2) relayed his belief that event attendees should respect others by arriving on time for events and
with a full tank of gasoline and (3) that he planned to leave ON TIME! We drove back roads to
Williams for lunch. Afterwards we gave attendees the option for a quick I-5 return or a brisk
adventuresome ride with us. Eleven Miatas followed us on back roads along the river and farm
communities. At one point we came upon a friendly farmer and his large farm vehicle, a 30-foot wide
combine. The narrow road would not allow for our Miatas and the combine to be on the road at the
same time. Since its weight would not allow shoulder driving he raised the front loader and we all
drove underneath it, which definitely created a WOW moment.
**At our first Board meeting, as part of our efforts to make this a kinder and gentler organization, we
established a Greeting Committee. Volunteers would greet new & current members at the door of the
monthly meetings. (The Chairperson was so excited about this job she designed a form for new
members to complete, which the VP used to introduce them later). We established a Raffle
Committee and budget to purchase the monthly raffle prizes. (A man and I volunteered for this
committee. He covered male/car oriented items and I covered female/candy-food-movie items.) For
better financial control, we established a requirement that all SAMOA checks issued would require 2
Officer Signatures; and those Officers could not be from the same household. I obtained a supplier
for personalized Club logo wooden badges to be offered to members who wanted to purchase them.
[In 2010, the above Committees still exist, the 2 signatories are still required, and badges are still
available on the Club website.] Robin and the rest of the By-laws Committee, organized last year
-7-
were still working on their revisions to present to the membership. The malaise interest in the Gold
Rush Event and a volunteer Chairperson was on the agenda for discussion. It was agreed to let the
Club members decide the fate of Gold Rush.
January meeting 1999: My plan as Event Coordinator included putting several events on the
calendar led by Robin and me. We had the Hangover Run for January, A Presidential Run for
February, a Passenger Swap for March, Miata Spare Parts Swap meet for May, and Return to Indian
Grinding Rock for June. After telling the members the plan, I asked others to do at least one. It
worked! After the meeting, 5 individuals agreed to do events in the upcoming months.
**Secretary reported there were 150 memberships consisting of 220 members.
February 1999: At the January meeting, Robin had encouraged members to park in Sudwerk’s back
parking area. Well members took heed, it was quite impressive to see 55 Miatas lined up and thus did
not block the restaurant’s other customers. President, Robin delegated a new duty assignment to the
Vice-president: at 6:55 he was to go out to the parking lot and count the Miatas and make a report
during the meeting!
**Ron Petrich was introduced as a new member. [Ron later served as Events Officer 3 years, Media
Director 5 years, and web master and designer since 2006]
**The new Tech man brought a wealth of talent and a new prospective to the Club. His newsletter
articles got the attention of men and women (he was young and really cute!) [His tech articles and
photos were documented and submitted to a national Miata magazine. In mid 2000, they “stole” him
away from SAMOA by offering him a job with the magazine and he move to southern CA]
**Robin asked members to give their opinions regarding the Gold Rush Event. They were asked to
contact the newsletter editor by mail, phone or email.
**President’s Run & BBQ lunch drew 20 Miatas and 34 people. Secretary, Genny (Osborn)
Paauwe, holds the distinction of the first Miata driver to have her “passenger barf”. [At the March
meeting Genny brought in Miata logo barf bags and promised to carry them for future passengers.]
March 1999: UT OH! A report from the newsletter editor “Mike & Marlaina Wilson discovered there
has been a typo on this newsletter in the same place for almost 2 years, and NO ONE has noticed it!!
On the bottom of the cover sheet of every newsletter, the word Owners is printed Ownrs. I have been
missing the E for almost 2 years”
**The newsletter editor reported he received only one communication regarding the question whether
to continue the Gold Rush event. Robin was asked: What happens if no one comes forward to run
Gold Rush this year? His response was “I’ll cancel it! And devote the time, energy and money to the
club members.” He again asked for member input “otherwise the Board will make the decision at the
April Board meeting which you are all welcome to attend.”
-8-
**Passenger Swap drew 16 Miatas and 22 intrepid souls. Set to “swap” there were more drivers than
passengers, but plenty of seats to try out. After lunch the group was treated to a private tour of the
US Postal Service Sacramento Processing and Distribution Center in West Sacramento. Robin was
a Labor Rep and had “pull with the higher ups” and I worked in the Accounting Unit. The workroom
floor was the size of 6 football fields, filled with high tech robotics, and processed all incoming and
outgoing mail for northern CA. The crowd was impressed and harassed Robin for his impressive but
very messy desk. “Robin, how do you find anything?”
March 17th, 1999: San Joaquin Valley Miata Club (SJVMC) St. Patrick’s Day Poker Run became a
SAMOA event when I pushed this event to our members. SAMOA had 12 Miatas and their club had
10. In addition, a total of 12 Miatas came from other CA Clubs. SAMOA members enjoyed a beer
and wine gathering in one of the rooms followed by an “idea” to circle the SAMOA Miatas in front of
the hotel. The drivers headed to the cars as the women grabbed cameras and headed to a 2nd floor
balcony for this Kodak moment.
April Meeting 1999: Robin announces Gold Rush ’99 is canceled. After 3 months of begging and
out of 220 members, he received only 4 offers to “sort of help”. It was determined the overall lack of
interest ended Gold Rush.
**New members: Ray Chermak and Rex and Shari Rowland
**Wine Tasting and Brandy Sniffing: 17 Miatas and owners were treated to a Brandy tour, sniffing and
tasting, then to lunch, followed by wine tasting.
Fran Rowell up front eyeing which one to sample!
**Miatas at the Oroville Library: Was suggested to me by Dennis Swaney of Oroville. It was a
community outreach for the Oroville Library. 50 members in 30 Miatas and a toddler in a red Miata
pedal car descended on the town. I had arranged with the Les Schwab manager for an area for the
Miatas to be displayed. The bugs were cleaned off and the shining cars were ready for public
viewing. I had prepared ballots for the public to vote for their favorite Miata. However, the pedal car
drew the greatest votes, and other members growled that it didn’t qualify for the oil change certificate
prize. Library organizers indicated “The car show was a huge success. The Friends of the Library
-9-
made over $800 on the book sale and the High School teens made $120 on their bake sale. The
huge success of this event is due largely to your Club and the wonderful turnout.”
May 1999: Was Miata Month at the Towe Museum. Several members gave up the use of their
Miatas for the privilege to present them in the Cavalcade of Cars display.
**Due to the large influx of 1999 Miatas and the demand of their owners, the SAMOA Board is
working on a redesign of the Club logo.
**In response to members’ request, FRS (Family Radio System) radios were purchased to allow
members to use their own radios while on group runs.
**Cinco de Mayo Scavenger Hunt organizer presented a group of items for everyone to obtain: $1
lottery ticket from a specific gas station, wrapper from a Burger King food item (digging in the trash
can), counting all the posts in a select 1 mile area, 1 coffee bean, business card from a car salesman,
smiley sticker from Wal-Mart, a certain size river rock, and count the real estate signs at a specific off
ramp. Each couple/single was given a Folsom map and the list and told to find the objects and meet
for lunch when done.
**Three Tech Clinics were held: Great Valley was the host for 16 women at a Female Tech Clinic.
SAMOA provided the eats for members and GV staff. Ralph Gingrich, Robin and the VP prepared
the food while the ladies asked their question and saw demonstrations. Mike Wilson arranged a
Tech Session at America’s Tires where he works. OK Tires presented a clinic on tires and mounting.
**Miata Spare Parts Swap Meet was held in the Sudwerks back parking lot after the May meeting.
**SAMOA Autocross at Mather was geared for the novice and drew 40 Miatas. Each member gained
knowledge about their car and then tested their new learned skills.
- 10 -
**Steelheads Baseball game and “Trunk-gate party”. It was opening night for the new Sacramento
team and Ron Petrich arranged with the team owners for parking for Miatas at the main entrance.
30 members brought food to share. Robin in true form of a tailgate party started the BBQ and cooked
steaks and baked potatoes for us. The highlight of the game came between innings. Several
selected spectators took turns to see how far they could throw Steelhead fish from the foul line. After
the first few tosses the fish began losing body parts: fins, tail, and heads. Yet the serious contenders
kept tossing the fish parts in order to receive passes for future games.
June 1999: There were 152 memberships consisting of 238 members with 152 Miatas. Members
were coming up with different ideas for leading Events and people were participating.
**Return to Indian Grinding Rock State Park: 21 Miatas were led on an adventure that included
twists, turns, driving over a stream, picnic and hiking.
**Treasure Hunt/Road Rally: Genny (Osborn) Paauwe put together a route that paired Miatas into 2car teams. At the meeting place, each team was assigned a color and had to find their color
instructions stuffed in toilet paper core, which were hidden in the bushes. Once the team found
theirs, inside was a photo and poem to “lead” them to the location of a historical landmark along the
Forty-niner/Pioneer trail and immediately headed out. Each of the teams headed to the same 12
markers, but not by the same route. You couldn’t follow another Miata because they weren’t headed
to your next location. Once you found your color toilet paper core, which was hidden within 50 feet of
the marker, the new clue led you to the next marker. Fortunately no locals took the toilet paper rolls
and everyone arrived at Cattlemen’s for lunch.
**Somewhere Over the Rainbolts: Robin and I led 13 Miatas through the foothills to Empire Mine to
meet the leaders for the second part of the trip. Joe and Carol led us on great Miata roads around
Grass Valley, Rough & Ready, to Malakoff Diggings, to lunch at a local brewery. [One SAMOA
member received a phone call from the Sac County Sheriff’s Dept. in Grass Valley asking him why he
wasn’t on the day’s Miata run. Better question, how come they knew him so well?]
**VP Run to Moaning Caves: had 20 Miatas head for the hills where 9 adventurous members repelled
into the caves while others watched and later they picnicked and share their stories.
- 11 -
July 1999: The newsletter editor asked the question “Will the Miata survive Y2K?” Mazda was
assuring owners that the Miata wouldn’t have any problems and didn’t expect any with the
dealerships, service records, or support systems.
**Robin assigned each Officer to write a mid-year review of what they had accomplished and done for
the Club. Here is a partial list printed in the newsletter: the VP prepared a 3 page report (typical
bureaucrat). Treasurer had worked hard to re-create accurate books (after the previous Treasurer’s
computer crashed in Dec.98, and lost all the records) and made laminated membership cards.
Secretary, Genny (Osborn) Paauwe redesigned the membership packets, instituted the switch over
to FRS radios at events, and led multiple events. Newsletter Editor had brought SAMOA to the
electronic world with a dedicated Samoa.org website, in addition to putting out a great newsletter
monthly. Technical Officer had kept men & women interested in his articles when he broke down the
technical stuff to where everyone could understand it. {Robin added “takes a lot of kidding from us
about his boyish good looks. His tips and actual instructional articles are very much anticipated. So
is his year-end calendar (just kidding, girls).”} Events: I had organized the group and “made them
want to help me by putting on events”. With the help of other members, we had already enjoyed 21
driving and tech events with 378 Miatas and 614 people attending them. Attendance topped 120 at
the monthly meetings. The Raffle Committee was a big success, and 155 name Badges had been
purchased by members.
Summer 1999: Event choices were plentiful and well attended despite the heat **Run and Rerun
Rock Creek Rd **Blackhawk Museum **Run Around the Hills & BBQ **Poker Fun Run with CD
music & instructions **Lake Topaz **Let’s Go To Georgetown for a picnic **Castle Air Museum Tour
August 1999: new members Jack & Sally Parker and Larry and Barbara Penfield. [Jack Parker
has severed 2 years as Tech Officer and 3 years as Events Officer]
September 1999: Membership was at its highest ever with 161 memberships and 248 members.
[Over the years membership dropped to a low of 67. In August, 2010 there are 153 memberships
with 249 members and 160 Miatas]
WINNER: Thanks to the hard work of Hugo Schmidt, SAMOA’s web page won him the California
State Fair Web Site Competition in the adult non-profit organization category.
October 1999: Five of the Officers decided to make history—the kind that will never ever be
repeated. They closed out the century as a SAMOA Officer and started the new century as a
SAMOA Officer. Robin stayed President, Genny remained Secretary, I went to Treasurer and Ron
Petrich volunteered for Events. Two other individuals were fighting for the newsletter position.
**Robin and I instituted a system to help the members determine the nature of an event. Previously
the focal point was cost, now it was changing to “what’s happening and how are we going to get
there?” We decided to use a MIATA code to describe events. M is Mild and passenger friendly. I is
Interesting and a chance to see the scenery. A is A Blend, good road for the drivers and good
destination for the passengers. T is for travel. A is for Adventuresome with a quicker pace. Because
- 12 -
events were drawing more participants we divided the group: the adventurers and the sightseers.
This worked out well for the drivers and passengers in each group.
**The proposed revision of the By-laws was presented to the membership to review before the
December Business meeting vote. The most debated item affected the definition of a membership.
The complaint Robin heard most often from the members were that single memberships paid the
same dues as couples, yet couples got 2 votes. The proposed revision would redefine to: Individual
membership, one person with one vote, or Couple membership, 2 people with one vote.
October 17, 1999: 9th SAMOA Birthday celebration was at Loomis Park. Robin managed to guide
38 Miatas into an 18 space parking lot. Wildwood BBQ owner had arrived early to prepare tri-tip,
chicken, beef ribs, salad, potato salad, beans and corn for the expected 96 hungry members.
However, 20 members burned the Club by failing to show up after indicating they would attend. Two
cakes were necessary to feed the crowd. Raffle ticket sellers worked the crowd including one that
was selling premium parking spots for $20 and giving them 25 tickets. Ticket sales resulted in $858
in donations for the Sacramento Children’s Home.
Fall 1999: Events included: **The Iceman Cometh & pot luck picnic at Wrights Lake **Harvest
Moon Run and desert **Lost in a Corn Maze **Ft. Bragg Run **Holiday Lights Tour **Ophir
Switchback Run through the fall colors.
**new members: Denise Correia joined in November and Wes and Paula Zicker joined in
December but didn’t have a Miata yet. [Denise has served as Events and 2 years as Secretary]
December meeting 1999: After two years, Hugo Schmidt decided to give up the newsletter.
However, he agreed to maintain the webpage and did so for many years afterwards.
**The membership voted in the 5 unopposed Officers and selected 2 new ones. The proposed ByLaws changes were passed by the membership. The Board of Directors, BoD was replaced by the
Board of Officers, BOO!
**I bid my final farewell as Events person and already booked several events for the New Year. First
one would be the Hangover Run, assuming the world didn’t come to a halt because of Y2K!
Year End Review: January the Club had 13 new ’99 Miatas, by December there were 41. A new
logo was designed and released. 78 new memberships joined during the year and brought in income
to fund the new logo design costs, banners, and signs without digging into Club reserves.

The 20th ANNIVERSARY MIATA – And why you may
never be able to have one
By Adi Damania
EXTRA! EXTRA! BREAKING NEWS FROM HIROSHIMA!!!!!!
{no, it is not 1945!}
To commemorate 20 years of Mazda Roadster (aka Mazda MX-5), Mazda Motor Corporation has
released a special edition version of its lightweight, two-seat, open-top sports car for the Japanese
market. The Mazda Roadster 20th Anniversary Edition (AE) went on sale on August 1 at all Mazda
dealerships nationwide in Japan. The car has attracted a wide range of customers since its launch in
1989, and is currently sold in approximately 60 countries. The Roadster was certified as the world's
most produced two-seat, open-top sports cars by Guinness World Records when production reached
1,000,000 units.
Japan, Britain, and Europe have already had their quota of the car (strangely 33% of the production
run has gone or will go to the UK) but it seems none of the 20th AE models will be sent to the U.S.
Japan got to celebrate the 20th birthday of the Mazda MX-5/Miata first with a special edition for
domestic market buyers only. The Crystal White Pearl Mica (the only color available in Japan)
roadster comes in two varieties: an RS soft-top with a 6-speed manual, and a VS hardtop with a 6speed automatic. Both cars get red-and-black heated Recaros, extra cabin padding, clear front fog
lights, a strut tower brace, and (of course) the requisite splash of 20th anniversary badging.
- 14 -
The 20th AE Miata is available as a soft-top six-speed manual transmission (yeah!), and the VS
Power Retractable Hard Top (RHT) hard-top model with a six-speed automatic transmission. Special
equipment includes unique red and black Recaro bucket sport seats, exclusive '20th Anniversary'
badges, and clear front fog lights. MSRP is $ is $33,475 for the soft-top version and $36,403 for the
RHT model. I am glad it is not the other way around for I can never think of myself as an automatic
driver. How else can I have fun by blipping the throttle?
The car comes with the following Special equipment:
- RECARO bucket sport seats (in red leather)
- Exclusive '20th Anniversary' badges (on each side fender)
- Clear front fog lights and bezels
- 205/45R17 84W tires and 17-inch aluminum wheels (wow!)
- Front strut tower bar (cowl connecting type)
- Fabric soft top with glass rear window (soft-top model only)
- Heated seats with five temperature settings
- Soft padding (synthetic leather door armrests and center console lid)
Body colors
All 20th Anniversary SE models come in only one color as per the SE history: Crystal White Pearl
Mica, used for the first time on the Mazda Miata Roadster. Frankly, I like the color combination. The
white body with red interior had me hooked ever since I saw it on a 1960 Chevrolet Impala
convertible, way back when.
So why is MAZDA not sending any 20th SE Miatas to the U.S.? I have no answer. May be they want
to keep us guessing! So what has been the lure of the little sportscar all these 20 years? They say
“It’s more fun to drive a slow car fast, than to drive a fast car slowly.” I agree. My friend, the same one
whose older brother had the white 1960 Chevy Impala, could drive any car to its maximum, even a 4
cylinder Morris Minor with a 800 cc engine. At 60 MPH, a Corvette ZR1 is essentially idling. Nothing
quite so dull as a chained beast that’s fast asleep in his cage, is there? At 70 MPH, a Miata is doing
4500-5500 RPM in 4th (on a ‘90 or ‘95), to keep it in the power band for passing. Stiff suspension
“communicates” the road. Like a wiener dog that’s 4 inches off the ground, everything feels “faster”
and noisier which to me is fun. As one wife of a crazy Miata owner told me “I let him drive it hard
because I know he will never get in to any trouble in that little car – with the law or otherwise”.
As for reliability - the little Miata is bulletproof. What was Bob Paauwe doing by the side of Salmon
Falls Road with the bonnet of his Miata open one will never know. I never had any problem with my
first two Miatas. The only problem that I have had with my third (and last) the 1999 10th AE, has been
the alternator overcharging and the car toasted two batteries before the mechanic realized what the
problem was and changed the alternator. As for the “check engine” light it never bothers me now as I
have stopped “topping up” after the gas tank was full, and changing over from 91 to 87 RON gas.
Nothing to do with our Ron Petrich, RON = Research Octane Number. So! Any Miata that stops
running before 200,000 miles is considered abused. Read that as ‘not having kept to the maintenance
schedules according to the owner’s manual’. You can never over-rev a Miata and it never over heats
even if you drive it hard if the proper coolant type and level is maintained. BTW Car & Driver has
named the Mazda MX-5 Miata as one of the Best Cars of the Decade!!
Many, at the beginning, thought of the Miata as (to quote our Governor) a “girlie” car. Not any more.
You are now thinking of a convertible VW Beetle or Mini Cooper. Those have more of a “girlie car”
appeal. When they first came out, women drooled over them (as they were small and hence
- 15 -
manageable), but then brawny men have realized what fun they are and the stigma went away
(although, I must say, some of it sticks to those pastel colored Beetles! You won’t catch me dead in
one). Some of the biggest smiles at the race track belong to the Spec Miata guys going at it at
Thunder Hill or Laguna Seca. It is a relatively less expensive to race and maintain a Miata as
opposed to a Porsche. But, I must confess, the ZR1 and the Shelby Mustang guys is a breed apart. In
all of Davis/Woodland area I know of only one girl who drives a ZR1 but her other car is a Subaru!
“It all makes for an immensely satisfying drive and proves that a car doesn’t need pavement-wrinkling
horsepower to deliver driving enjoyment.” —Car & Driver January 2008
Addendum: Just to test the theory that no 20th AE Miatas will be coming our way, I phoned one of
them Mazda dealers (who for the purpose of this story shall go nameless), where an over eager
salesman tried to sell me a new 2009 Miata. When I insisted that I was only interested in buying a
20th AE, he asked me if I was ready to come to the dealership right away if they had one for sale. I
said sure. Then he said “just a minute while I talk to my supervisor”. After an extremely long pause he
came back and said he will call me as soon as they get one in the showroom. It is over a month and I
have still not heard from him! Hee, hee, heh!

Last Chance For A Raffle Bonanza
by Ron Petrich
Well, not really… but getting close. It’s surprising to finally see the light at the end of
the tunnel. Our 20th Anniversary bash is almost upon us. By the time you read this it
will be just 3 ½ short weeks away. I was asked to make a raffle “happen” by robin and
Mike back in January of this year. Given the state of the economy then – and now – I
knew that I had to start early with vendors and other raffle donors in gathering prizes.
Of course, there is a law of diminishing returns involved when starting so early. Many
vendors simply don’t want to deal with something that far in the future. They often feel
that they have plenty of time to respond. Some larger vendors have internal policies
relating to club donations, or donations in general. They don’t deliver the goods, so to
speak, until 2-4 weeks prior. My argument to those vendors, however, centered around
the increased free publicity that they would by committing early, as their name(s) and
logos would grace our web page for a much longer time frame. Free advertising.
Often, this logical (or not) premise won out. Yet, despite all of the great “stuff’ that we
have received, we are still waiting for shipments from four or five. Our goal is that
anything and everything that we receive will be raffled off at Bear Valley.
Which brings us back to the title of this article. Other than our next meeting on
September 9th, there are no events on the calendar between now and Running Around
Bear. So, please bring your checkbooks or wads of green to the next meeting at Celias,
or use the order form on our web page. And just to make things even easier for you,
we have printed that form in this newsletter for your convenience. Please remember
that even if you are not attending the weekend at Bear Valley Lodge, you can still
participate. Winners do not need to be present, and all prizes will be delivered to the
winner by hook, crook, dogsled, space shuttle, or by the old reliable – feet.
What’s new and upcoming with the raffle? Recent prizes include private golf lessons
from the pro staff at Haggin Oaks, 3-day passes to next September’s ALMS weekend at
Mazda Raceway, a myriad of dress up items from the Knobmeister, a ZoomZoom bag of
goodies from MazdaUSA, and Miata books from Moss Motors and Doug Hoffman. On
the horizon this week are car care products due in from Meguiars, Adam’s Polishes, 303
Products, and Stoner Car Care Products.
Every car participating at Bear Valley will also get a goody bag filled with, among other
items, car magazines, catalogs, discount coupons, care care products, and more.
But please don’t lose focus as to the real purpose of this raffle. We are, historically, as
a club, very generous folks. In the past we have supported the Children’s Receiving
Home, the Crohns & Colitis Foundation, Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, the Society for the
Blind, and the Sacramento Children’s Home. This year 100% of the proceeds will go
directly to the Children’s receiving Home, CCFA, the Society for the Blind, and the Lupus
Foundation. So please be generous and purchase as many tickets as you can
reasonably afford. Thanks, and see you all on the evening of September 25th at the
raffle at Bear Valley.
September 11, 2001
"We didn’t lose almost 3,000 people that day. We lost one wonderful person at a time,
almost 3,000 times."
At approximately 8:45 AM on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, a horrendous, dastardly and despicable
attack on the United States of America was conducted by extremist Islamic groups, supported by
rogue Islamic governments. The attack(s) were conducted against innocent American citizens,
against the financial infrastructure of America and against America's military infrastructure.
Eternal rest give to them, O Lord:
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
They stood hushed and glimmering in the night,
Giants able to frame the moon,
Slumbering magnificently in their might.
Day breaks and the sun gently warms their skin,
Veins begin to pulse with life,
The spirit of a thousand of kin.
They were our neighbors,
Someone to whom we'd just say "hi."
Never did we ever think
The next day they would die.
We never took one last long look
Or gave an extra smile.
The attacks on September 11
Taught us to go that extra mile.
We'll never be able to hug them again
But now we can hug others.
And say an extra "I love you"
To our children, friends and mothers.
We miss our neighbors every day
And wish they were not gone.
But we'll cherish those that are still here
While we will move on.
Night and Day we waited we watched for a
sign that our loved ones would come the
leaves changed colors
the snow did melt without most of them our
lives filled with doubt
Hopes that the rescuers would find someone
we gave our hope we gave our prayer we
did all that we could
we did all that we should yet most of us
yearn with a strong heart that more should
have been found to fill us with joy
Evil tears towards them through the brilliant morning sky, Propelled by the
blackest of hate, Guided by a lie.
Barely risen they stand with no defense, Innocent and distracted they are not
prepared, The pain about to be inflicted intense.
Like a bolt of lightning that shatters the morn, Evil crashes once then twice
into their sides, Their bodies are scorched and torn.
Horribly crippled they continue to stand, Holding onto life until the last,
Orders are given, they take the command.
The battle is brief, the giants begin to yield, Life drains from every artery,
Their fate is sealed.
Collapsing to zero, First to one knee then to the next, From their dust will
emerge so many a hero.
The question is asked, How can such evil exist.
