A VOICE FOR
THE SILENT
By: Danielle Koleniak
As thousands of northerners made their way down to sunny and warm Southwest Florida, a group of 11 Bishop
Verot High School students are heading to Washington DC, where the temperature this month averages
45 degrees.
Their purpose is far more important than taking a ‘sel¿e’ with the National Monument—
They’re marching for life.
Since January 22, 1974 (the day abortion was legalized), 56 million people have gathered to rally their pro-life
support on the day of prayer for the legal protection of unborn children.
This year, more than 500,000 people from all over the world are expected to attend
the largest pro-life event in the world.
Bishop Verot sophomore and St. John XXIII parishioner, Elena Quinonez will be one of 11 students from the
Catholic high school, traveling to the cold temps to pray, take a stand, and march through the National Capital in
hope of bringing change and ultimately, saving lives.

The Silent, Cont.
Danielle Koleniak: How did you ¿rst learn
about ‘March for Life?’
Elena Quinonez: I’m in a club for school called
‘Mission in Life.’ One day we went to Planned
Parenthood to pray for the unborn. After we
prayed, our Director of Campus Ministry,
Matthew Burback, told our club about ‘March
for Life’ and asked if any of us were interested
in going to Washington DC to join the effort.
The march is similar to what we do in our own
town, except in Washington DC, march and
pray with thousands of people.
DK: You’re at an age where young ladies are
having abortions. How does this hit ‘close to
home?’
EQ: My dad is a doctor and he tells me that girls
my age come into his of¿ce pregnant and look
at abortion as an option. I think it’s important
that the teenagers should know that they don’t
only have that option.
DK: Explain what the ‘Mission in Life’ club is.
EQ: About 20 highschoolers come together to
work in bettering our community. We do service
projects together. For example, for Christmas
we wrapped gifts for children in need. Now
we’re focusing on Respect for Life.
DK: How many are attending the march
from Bishop Verot High School?
EQ: We’re a group of 11. We’re going to Ày to
Washington DC and stay for four days. We’re
paying for the trip on our own.
„ Thursday, January 22
Choir Rehearsal 5:00pm
Theology on Tap: At Resurrection
of our Lord 8:00pm
_____________________________
DK: What are you expecting for this trip?
EQ: Cold weather, for sure. Haha! The march
starts in the National Mall and it’s a long walk
through Washington DC. Everyone marches
together and prays. To have everyone together,
believing and praying for the same thing, is
really powerful. I think this will really make my
beliefs and passion even stronger, and hopefully
bring change. When we come back home, it
would be great to share our experience with
other students at Bishop Verot High School.
„ Friday, January23
Girl Scouts 6:00pm
_____________________________
DK: Why is the Respect for Life cause so
important to you?
„ Saturday, January 24
EQ: Deciding someone’s fate is not our
decision. Life is sacred from the beginning. We
need to protect the unborn and be a voice for the
babies who don’t have voices. It’s important to
make a stand, march, and pray for that.

Prayer to End Abortion
Lord God,
I thank you today for the gift of my life,
And for the lives of all my brothers and sisters.
I know there is nothing that destroys more life than abortion,
Yet I rejoice that you have conquered death by the Resurrection of Your Son.
I am ready to do my part in ending abortion.
Today I commit myself
Never to be silent, never to be passive, never to be forgetful of the unborn.
I commit myself to be active in the pro-life movement,
And never to stop defending life
Until all my brothers and sisters are protected,
And our nation once again becomes
A nation with liberty and justice
Not just for some, but for all,
Through Christ our Lord. Amen!

Faith Formation and Middle School class will be held this Wednesday
January 21
As a reminder Sacrament Preparation Year II students and parents will
be held on Wednesday January 28th.
Faith Formation will not be held and Middle School will be held outside,
weather permitting.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a program for children ages 4 to 10
that takes place each Sunday during the 9:15 & 11:15 Masses. After
the opening prayer, the children along with their Catechist move to the
chapel to hear and discuss the Sunday readings at a level they will
understand. At the offertory the children return to the assembly for the
remainder of the Mass. There is no registration required for Children’s
Liturgy of the Word. While we want this to be a fun and engaging time
for the children, they are expected to behave in an appropriate manner
respectful to adults and to God’s House. Please talk to your child about
this before having them attend Children’s Liturgy of the Word. Because
this is a guided lesson, we ask that children younger than age 4 do not
attend. If you would like more information, or to be a part of this program,
please contact Chris Biel at 561-7499.

Please read the requirements on our various Sacrament porgrams
listed Below:
Baptism: Congratulations on your decision to baptize your child! At Saint
John XXIII we are happy to help your family prepare for the celebration.
Baptisms are offered for registered members of Saint John XXIII and
are scheduled only after the preparation process is completed by the
parents. Please do not make arrangements for family members until you
have actually received a date. Contact the ofÀce at 561-2245 for more
information or to begin the process.
First Communion (also called First Eucharist) and First Reconciliation:
Children in First grade or above, who have expressed a desire and
willingness and are attending Mass, are welcome to begin the two year
process of preparing for these Sacraments. The Àrst year consists of
regular attendance at Faith Formation classes or through a Diocesan
Catholic school. (either St. Francis Xavier or St. Andrew) The second year
continues those classes, but also adds in direct Sacramental Preparation
(Reconciliation and Communion) sessions. Contact Chris at 561-7499
for more information or to begin the process. Parents who home school
their children must contact the ofÀce during Year I.
ConÀrmation Preparation to celebrate the Sacrament of ConÀrmation is
also a two year process that now begins at the start of 9th Grade and is
celebrated at the end of 10th grade. (Older teens are certainly welcome
also!). Each year consists of Faith Formation through the parish
Youth Group or a Diocesan Catholic school (Bishop Verot) as well as
scheduled ConÀrmation classes and a retreat. Please note: Students
from Bishop Verot must register and attend the preparation classes at
the beginning of 9th grade. If you are entering the 9th grade or would
like more information on our program, Contact Chris at 561-7499 for
more information or to begin the process.

“DIVINE MERCY” – CHRIST’s MESSAGE TO ST. FAUSTINA (1933-38)
“DIARY OF ST. FAUSTINA”
POWER OF PRAYER!
*How is your pray life? How is your Spirituality” [What is Spirituality?]
*How is your Relationship to Christ?
Our Beloved Pope Francis mentions 3 critical components in our
Relationship to God:
# God is TENDER
# God wants CLOSENESS and
# God wants a PRESENCE to each one of us: He wants to BE
PRESENT ALL DAY, EVERY DAY!
Assigned reading:
Ellen Marie Edmonds book:
Jane Sweeney’s book:
Chapter 14 (pp 185-88)
Chapter 12 (p 87)
Chapter 15 (pp 189-92)
Chapter 13 Prayer (p 89)
Chapter 16 (pp 193-96)
Chapter 14 Wish Lists (p 91)
AS A CAREGIVER I PRAY OH LORD PLEASE WITH YOUR HELP:
* TEACH ME HOW TO SHOW MERCY (see St. John Paul II’s message}
* TEACH ME HOW TO PRAY YOUR “DIVINE MERCY” CHAPLET
* TEACH ME HOW TO BRING YOUR DIVINE MERCY IN OTHERS
WHAT ARE THE 8 BEAUTITUDES?
Question: Are you battling feelings of hopelessness &
overwhelmed with chores?
We remember that the Synoptic Evangelists put the words of
Isaiah 40:3 in the mouth of John the Baptist: He was the “one
crying in the wilderness…”. But all the Evangelists made sure
that there could be no mistake about just who the “Messiah,”
the “Anointed of God” was: not John, but Jesus. In this
reading, we see the afÀrmation by John of his subordination.
(In fact, all four gospels John says something about “sandals”
and his unworthiness.) But more important, at the Baptism
of the Lord, He heard the words that would shape His life: He
was God’s Son. This Sonship was promised David and his heir
(2 Samuel 7:14, Psalm 2:7). So, when the earliest Christians
heard the words of the Evangelist, they recognized Jesus as
the successor to the Davidic promise. But His kingship was
a unique kind, one that would bring peace and justice to a
broken world. This is the task he has bequeathed to us, His
Church, you and me!

Those of you who are new to our Parish this year, and to those
who’ve been coming for years without being registered, we need
your help in staying organized and planning for our future needs.
Having an accurate database of our Parishioners will help us know
where and how we need to grow. Thank you to everyone who
registered with our Parish both online and via registration card. If
you’ve not received a welcome letter, please call the Parish OfÀce to
conÀrm your registration. Thanks!
All new parishioners, and those interested in registering in our Parish, are invited to attend the New Parishioner Orientation; the next
Session is this Sunday, March 8th at 12:30. This is your opportunity to become informed and active members of the Parish and
participate in our various ministries. Registering at St. John XXIII is a
declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community.
Please let the parish ofÀce know your email address OR you can
even update it on the Parish Website! www.johnxxiii.net Frequently, those seeking to celebrate Marriage, Baptisms or serve as sponsors for ConÀrmation or Baptism request a letter stating that they
are parishioners. To receive such a letter, one must be registered in
the parish, attend Mass regularly, and be committed to stewardship
of time, talent and treasure. One means of verifying participation is
through the use of parish offertory envelopes.
If you choose not to participate in the support of the parish or are
unable to contribute at this time, please at least note your prayerful
support on your envelope and place it in the weekly offertory basket.

Lee County is 67th out of the 67 counties in Florida and Florida
is 50th out of 50 states in funding for mental health services.
How would you feel if you knew that there was a treatment
for cancer that worked but wasn’t being implemented by the
medical Àeld? You’d probably feel angry and helpless over this
neglect by the health system and if you had a loved one for
whom proper treatment was being denied due to cost you would
probably be enraged. Add to that the inability of the ill person to
see the need for their treatment because the organ affected is
the brain, the seat of judgement and planning.
It is estimated that neglect of serious mental illness costs our
nation $444 billion a year-mostly from lost earnings. Add to that
the suffering from addictions, homelessness or incarceration
suffered by lack of treatment and you get a sense of what
families who have a loved one with these neuro-biological brain
diseases experience. Studies show that supportive housing and
employment programs drastically reduce the cost to our society.
But evidence-based remedies are not available due to the apathy
that surrounds the whole question of how funding will take place
for these services. The need to revise the laws governing such
treatment is another barrier to adequate care. Obstacles such as
these add to the burden of caring for those with mental illness.
If you have a loved one suffering with chronic, severe
psychiatric disability and are in need of support, advocacy and
education, please join us Monday 1/26 at 6 Pm in the ofÀce
conference room. There is hope.

Your faith has been with you from the start...
Most often, when we think of making a gift to the Church, we
think of our weekly offertory, which is considered to be a sacrificial
percentage of one’s income. However, prayerfully consider leaving
our Parish in your will in the form of :

The Best Things in Life are Free
Remind us, O Lord, in this money-conscious, material
world, that the best gifts given us, our mortal and eternal
life, we gained freely from You. And challenge us, Lord, to
give back to You as freely those lives that those we meet
may see Your light and come to know you.

Pope marks 2015 with critiques of everyday slavery, faith outside church
By Joshua J. McElwee of National Catholic Reporter
Rome -- Pope Francis began the New Year criticizing those
who might seek to follow Jesus Christ outside the structures of
the church, saying they introduce an “absurd dichotomy” and
ignore that the church is God’s family, bringing Christ to all.
Celebrating Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica Jan. 1, the pontiff said
the faith “is not an abstract doctrine or philosophy, but a vital
and full relationship with a person: Jesus Christ.”
“Where can we encounter him?” asked Francis. “We encounter
him in the church. It is the church which says today: ‘Behold
the Lamb of God;’ it is the Church, which proclaims him; it is in
the Church that Jesus continues to accomplish his
acts of grace which are the sacraments.”
“No manifestation of Christ, even the most
mystical, can ever be detached from the Áesh
and blood of the Church, from the historical
concreteness of the Body of Christ,” Francis
continued.
“Without the Church, Jesus Christ ends up as an
idea, a moral teaching, a feeling,” said the pontiff.
“Without the Church, our relationship with Christ
would be at the mercy of our imagination, our
interpretations, our moods.”
Francis was celebrating Mass at the start of the
year for the World Day of Peace and the Catholic
feast of the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God,
both celebrated by the church Jan. 1.
Before speaking on the role of the church in
sharing Jesus, the pontiff meditated on Mary’s
place in loving and raising him, saying: “Christ and
his mother are inseparable.”
“Mary is so closely united to Jesus because she
received from him the knowledge of the heart, the
knowledge of faith, nourished by her experience as a mother
and by her close relationship with her Son,” said Francis.
“The Blessed Virgin is the woman of faith who made room for
God in her heart and in her plans; she is the believer capable
of perceiving in the gift of her Son the coming of that ‘fullness
of time’ in which God, by choosing the humble path of human
existence, entered personally into the history of salvation,” he
said.
“That is why Jesus cannot be understood without his Mother,”
said Francis. “Likewise inseparable are Christ and the Church;
the salvation accomplished by Jesus cannot be understood
without appreciating the motherhood of the Church.”
Quoting from Pope Paul VI’s 1975 apostolic exhortation
Evangelii Nuntiandi, Francis said “to separate Jesus from the
Church would introduce an ‘absurd dichotomy.’”
After the Mass Thursday, Francis saluted pilgrims who had
come to a frosty St. Peter’s Square to say the noontime
Angelus prayer.
The pontiff said the start of a new year is a good time to
remember your baptism, to “rediscover the gift received in that
sacrament that has regenerated a new life: the divine life.”
Going off his text, he repeated a question he has asked before,
querying the crowd: “How many of you remember the date of
your baptisms?”
Seeing that many did not raise their hands, the pontiff told
them that they had “homework” -- to ask their parents and
grandparents about the day and how it was celebrated.
Mentioning the annual New Year’s celebration of the World
Day of Peace, Francis also said three times during his Angelus
remarks that “peace is always possible.”
“We must search for it,” he said. “Remember well: peace is
possible and the roots of peace are prayer. Pray for peace!”
The church has celebrated Jan. 1 as the World Day of Peace
since 1967. Each year since 1968, the pope has released a
peace message to the world on that day.
Francis’ message this year takes the theme “No Longer
Slaves, but Brothers and Sisters,” and makes a forceful and
personal plea for the end of modern-day slavery -- calling on
governments, communities and individuals globally “not to
become accomplices” to human trafÀcking and exploitation in
their myriad forms.
The pontiff also addressed the issue of slavery while closing
out 2014, saying in a vesper’s service in St. Peter’s Basilica
Dec. 31 that God sent Jesus to ransom sinners from slavery.
“Do we live as children [of God] or as slaves?” asked Francis
during his homily at the service.
“Do we live as people baptized in Christ, anointed by the Spirit,
ransomed and free?” he asked. “Or do we live according to
worldly logic: corrupt, doing what the devil wants us to believe
is in our best interest?”
Pope Francis told those gathered in the basilica that all people,
even Christians, have “a tendency to resist freedom; we fear
freedom and, paradoxically, we prefer slavery” although often
people are not aware that that is what they are doing.
“Freedom frightens us because it places time before us and,
with it, the responsibility to live it well,” he said. “A nostalgia
for slavery nests in our hearts because it appears more
reassuring than freedom, which is much riskier.”
Saying the New Year is a time for people to examine their
consciences, Francis called especially for people to evaluate
how they helped and served the poor.
Christians, he said, must have “the courage to proclaim in our
city that the poor must be defended and that we do not need
to defend ourselves from the poor, that the weak must be
served and not used.
