This was the case at the annual SIS Olympics that was organized
by SIS Kebon Jeruk this year. Many different sports, many happy
faces and many excited winners were anxious to display their
medals from a myriad of sports that were contested over three
days of exciting competitions.
Don’t forget to see what’s happening at the other SIS schools, in
addition to the full report to the SIS Olympics 2012. In this first
edition, our friends at SIS Cilegon cared to share about their recent
Fieldtrip and Family Day. And also have a look at how Kelapa
Gading’s “KG Idol” Competition went!

SIS Palembang
from a field
to a school
I
t has been great to work with BOGs of SIS Group of
Schools who show noble heart in providing opportunity
to Indonesian children to obtain an affordable and quality
education international standards. It is every parent’s dream to
send their children to a school which gives quality and relevant
education at reasonable cost. It is every parent’s dream to see
their children receive an education which will prepare them to
cope and compete in the fast changing world.
Curriculum was meticulously designed to make sure that
it caters to the needs of the children. It is SIS commitment
to provide quality and relevant education to every child.
Extensive research was conducted. The academic team had
to study programmes of BeaconHouse in Lahore, Pakistan,
Singapore, Indonesia and the existing SIS Group of Schools. All
the best practices of these institutions were put together in
the creating SIS Palembang curriculum.
Ground breaking was held in October 2011 spearheaded by
Mr. Reza Pahlavi- Head, Palembang Education Department.
Local partners, religious leaders, BOGs and BODs, as well as
local leaders were present during this momentous day. Local
journalists were also present to cover and document the event
On 26 May 2012, the gates of SIS Palembang located in Jl. Letda
A. Rozak, Taksam, Ilir Timur 2 finally opened to the public. The
Open House was held on the campus and welcomed its new
parents, students, teachers, partners and friends from media
and the community. SIS Palembang started their academic
year with 43 students from Preschool (N1, K1, K2) and Lower
Primary (P1-P3) and is still growing.
It is SIS’ unwavering commitment to provide opportunity
for your children to develop and realize their potentials to
the fullest and enjoy the process of learning. As we always
say, “SIS is where Serious Learning is Seriously FUN!
I am proud to say that SIS is a trailblazer when it comes
to providing quality, relevant and accessible education to
every child of Indonesia. SIS will find ways and means to
pave the way to ensure that every child in Indonesia will
have access to a relevant, quality and affordable education
with international standards. Expect SIS to be in your
town soon.

Palembang parents will now realise this dream. They don’t
need anymore to send their children away as far as Jakarta
at an early age and miss the milestones in their children’s life
while growing up. Their children need not to sacrifice their
growing up years building memories without their family. The
inception of SIS in Palembang will never deprive the children
again the rights to have access to quality education.
On 18 December 2012, Soft Launching and Open House were
held at the Horizon Hotel. Mr. Eddy Yusuf - Vice Governor,
South Sumatra was the Guest of Honour. Parents with their
children, local partners, government officials and academic
leaders from the SIS Group of Schools also graced the event
and took part in the programme.

SIS Olympics 2012 - One SIS
T
he annual SIS Olympics was hosted by SIS Kebon Jeruk
this year. It was held over three days; culminating with the
Track & Field Meet on Saturday 14 April 2012.
The games that were played over the three days were
Badminton, Table Tennis, Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis,
Swimming and Track & Field. The annual Governor’s Cup for
futsal was incorporated in the SIS Olympics programme.
Students from all the eight schools enthusiastically participated
in the events and games. The advantage of being in a group of
schools is the ability to organize sporting events of this scale.
Sports provides the platform for students to be instilled with
the values of teamwork, honesty, perseverance and respect.
The theme chosen for SIS Olympics 2012 was ‘One SIS’.
The SIS Group of Schools works towards achieving the
same vision despite each school having its own uniqueness.
To accentuate the meaning of ‘uniqueness’, two schools
displayed their Unique CCAs – Cheerleading (Kelapa Gading)
and Poi (Kebon Jeruk).
Many athletes did their schools proud by completing
the events despite being last. This was a good display of
‘perseverance’. Many in the spectator stand cheered for these
athletes. It was indeed a spectacular sight.
SIS Kelapa Gading emerged as the Overall Champion School
for the third consecutive year. Congratulations!

such a massive event.

competitions. Apart from having lots of fun and making new
friends each player also has the opportunity to receive a 50%
scholarship on all school fees! Our plan is to expand into other
sports in the future but we will be holding the next set of soccer
trials for u10, u12 and u14 in July so come and show off your
skills and join this exciting new program.

The SIS ACADEMY is an elite sports program set up by the
Board of Governors to promote a healthy and competitive spirit
within our SIS students whilst giving professional coaching to
promising athletes. We started this inaugural year by selecting
a U10 and U12 soccer team from all four SIS schools in Jakarta
to compete in the JSFL league as well as local and International

SIS Cilegon’s KidZania Field Trip
O
n the 3rd of February 2012 the SIS Cilegon students had
a fieldtrip to KidZania. Due mostly to excitement, all of us
woke up as early as 5 in the morning. We needed to be in school
as early as 6 o’clock..
Once everyone has arrived, we
started boarding the huge bus.
The little ones went up first. The
bus trip was about 2 hours from
our school. Some slept while some
ate their breakfast.
Upon our arrival, we were
welcomed by the KidZania staff.
Everyone was asked to wear
special bracelets. Then we took
the elevator to the 6th floor of
Pacific Place. One can really feel the
excitement in the air. Because of
the cold temperature in KidZania,
some decided to put on their
jackets. In KidZania, the children
chose from numerous jobs. Like
being a policeman who catches
a thief; a doctor, a baker, a pizza-maker, a racer, a window washer,
a fireman and a lot of other occupations.
Every hour a special music was played and the KidZania staff start
dancing. It was fun watching them. Some Pre-School students
had the chance to perform with the dancers too.
We played to our heart’s content, then it was time for lunch. Then
there were more activities for everyone.
After a tiring but exciting day we headed back to Cilegon. Most
of us could not sleep while on the bus, we could not stop talking
about our experience. It was definitely a unique experience and
we all went home with smiles on our tired but very happy faces.

SIS Cilegon Family Day 2011-2012

n May 5, 2012, SIS Cilegon celebrated its Family Day to
promote camaraderie among its diverse community. Raga
and Pallavi’s family were the first to arrive. Mr. Sam, Keiji and Ibu
Lee Fung (Keiji’s mom) were the joint Masters of Ceremonies.
To signal the opening of the event, Keiji, the recipient of
numerous gold medals in the recently concluded SIS Olympics,
led the passing of the torch to the different team representatives
until it was passed to Ms. Teresa for the ceremonial lighting of
the flame. Tiara of P6 class led the singing of the Indonesian
National Anthem and the SIS School Song.
The families were divided into Red, Blue, and Yellow teams.
Each team gave their best on the cheers and yells. The
Running Relay with the fathers going first, followed by t the

lower primary, upper primary then the pre-school, were the
first events of the day. Then it was followed by the Throwing
Games with the pre-school using a bean bag, upper primary
using the basketball, the dads with the shot put and the tennis
ball for teachers. Then the Obstacle Race came next with each
member of the family passing through the blocks, hula hoops,
jump rope, tyres and the hurdles. Finally, the soccer game!
The Blue Team garnered First Place during that event, the Red
Team came in next and the Yellow team were in third place.
After all the fun and games, food brought by the parents was
shared with everyone. It was indeed a memorable day for the
parents, pupils and teachers alike, so much so that they are
looking forward to the next Family Day.

SIS-KG Idol
L
ast December, SIS Kelapa Gading held a singing competition, SIS-KG Idol. There were 3 categories (Category A,
Category B, Category C) and in each, there is Solo and Group competition. Category A is from K1-P2, Category B is from
P3-P6 and Category C is for Sec 1- Sec 4.
The elimination round was held on 13th December 2011, with more than 100 students, of which 76 students went on to the
final round - 16 students for solo and 60 students for group competition. The final round was held on 15th December 2011
from 08 30-11 00 am.

New Year
2012年1月20日是个难忘的日子。因为这一天我的学校举办了春节庆祝活动。
只见校园到处都贴满了春联和挂饰，同学和老师都穿上红色的衣服，学校里到
处洋溢着过年的气氛。早上，大家都在操场上集合，共同欢庆这美好的时刻。
舞龙舞狮队也来到学校给我们带来福气。只见在一片锣鼓喧天声中，狮子和祥
龙时而伏地，时而腾空，不断地引起同学们的阵阵喝彩。除了舞龙舞狮外，老
师和学生还一起玩游戏，获胜的同学还可以拿到礼物和红包，大家都兴奋地举
手参与。另外，中国老师还教同学们亲手制作中国传统食物，如包包子，包饺
子和包汤圆等。食物做好了，大家一起分享。此刻，每个人的脸上都洋溢着幸
福的笑容。

20 January 2012 was an

Medan celebrated Chinese
New Year Celebration. Once
we entered the school
grounds, we could see a
lot of Chinese decorations
and hanging ornaments,
and everyone in school was
wearing a red shirt. It felt like
we were really celebrating
Chinese New Year with all
our families. In the morning,
everyone gathered on the
field, sharing the wonderful
moments. Dragon and lion
dancers also came.
As the drums beat, the
dragon and lions waved up
and down, as the students admired the coordination of
the dancers. Aside from the dance numbers, teachers

SIS Semarang’s Community Service
and Concert for a Cause
“Part of being a person is helping others.” Seth Caplan
T
his phrase signifies a virtue, which is immaculately
meaningful, yet considerably missing in the world we live
in. In this world crammed with competition and haste, billions
of people rush around every day to get their personal jobs
done in order to fulfill their aspirations. However, in times of
tranquility one is reminded to contribute to the society they
have grown up in and the people around them. Yet there are
only a handful of people who are able to implement these
thoughts in reality.
In the month of September 2011, the Secondary 3 and 4
students organised a Community Service activity in a nearby
local primary school. It was a wonderful opportunity to serve
this community. We taught young children, served snacks
and played with them. Being able to bring a smile on each and
every child’s face was a beautiful feeling which I personally
relished. It was a completely new and amazing experience for
us, which made us very pleased. Furthermore, it ignited our
desire to do more for our society.
Taking inspiration from this effort, we organised another
activity, a concert for a cause. On the 12th of November various
students from our school showcased their talents. A fairly
hectic week was in the cards for the teachers, students and
the staff. Several rehearsals were carried out in order to make
the performances as smooth and professional as possible. The
concert attracted a large audience who were serenaded by
songs and delightful dances. The concert attracted a huge
crowd which was certainly very pleasing. Moreover, all the
money earned from the concert would be used to further our
community service endeavours.
Personally, I was very proud of the fact that we were able to
carry out such an event for the benefit of our community.
We believe that we are lucky enough to possess all the basic
amenities and necessities in life. Being responsible citizens, it is
our duty to contribute to our surroundings and help the ones
who are less privileged. Through such activities, I am hoping
that a day will come when everyone will be treated equally
and with respect. There will no longer be any rich or any poor.

Fight Hunger the ‘Write’ Way- a Community Project
In November 2011, the students of SIS
Kebon Jeruk embarked on the project that
aimed at helping the people of Somalia.

It started with an Assembly Talk on “Poverty”
by Mr Ismail. The students were then tasked
to come up with a postcard design in an Art
Competition. Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI)
partnered the school in this project. The
prizes for the Art Competition were donated
by BNI. The winning design came from Rachel Marcia Setiawan of Primary 6.
Donations solicited had to be in multiples of IDR 20 000. For every IDR 20 000, the
students were given one postcard. Students wrote a message on helping the people
of Somalia on the postcard. The students were very excited about writing on postcards.
Many did not know that postcards were meant to be written on. They regard postcards
as souvenir items!
This project integrated the following subjects – English Language, Values Education,
Social Studies, Geography, Art and Mathematics. Writing on postcards on helping
people of Somalia provided the students with a real-life setting to Situational Writing.
At the end of November, the project ended with a collection of IDR 19 455 000. This was
a commendable effort by SIS Kebon Jeruk students. The donation was sent to Somalia
through UNESCO.

SUCCESS from a
Teenager’s Point
of View

We usually don’t treat teenagers seriously, we look at
them as individuals whose lives revolve around gadgets,
music, and fashion and spend most of their time in front
of the television.
What we don’t realize is that they do have serious takeat life
and they do plan for their future dream of being successful.
Singapore School, Bandung Secondary 4 students are
about to embark on a new chapter in their lives and here’s
what they have to say about success.
What is success? It is the fact that you have achieved what you
want and have been trying to do. In order to be successful, you
should always believe in yourself and be determined to overcome
any challenges. Always follow the path of positive energy as this
path will lead you to definite success.
Success is never achieved alone, for we always have our family to
guide us along the way and would always support us all the way.
Success is not about material things like gadgets; success is about
hard work and reaching our goals and never giving up. Believe
that you could succeed in everything you want in life and make
our family proud.

Success is the accomplishment of an aim or a purpose. Many
people will consider aims to include passing the scores with high
marks or getting your dream job. From my point of view, I do
agree that we need to do our best in everything that we do and
aim for excellence; however, I also believe that we should enjoy
life. Achieving as well as succeeding in our goals is important but
we can only do this if we like what we’re doing. Many athletes,
businessmen and even some Presidents have not been able to live
up to the standards set by other people, however, none of these
matter as long as you have done your best and had fun doing it.
We live our life everyday not just to pass the time but because we
have a purpose. Every time we wake up to a new day means that
we are closer to achieving our goals and dreams.

I am in my second year of university, pursuing
my Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences in
Communications and New Media, with a
minor in Psychology, at the National University
of Singapore.
SIS has played a huge part in molding me into the person that I am
today. The teachers at SIS are supportive and nurturing. I was given
many opportunities to take part in different activities and leadership
roles. These opportunities have helped me develop into a wellrounded person.
At SIS, I was able to reap the benefits of small class sizes. More
individualized attention has helped me to understand the study
material better. It also encouraged me to speak up more frequently in
class. I have learned that this is useful in university. If you don’t
participate, you don’t get the marks!
The best part about being in SIS is that despite the diverse backgrounds
of teachers and students, it is still a tight knit community. Nothing can
prepare you for the real world as much as working and getting along
with different types of people.

Priscilla Dorothy Saulina

I currently live in Melbourne, Australia. I have
been busy studying, teaching dance classes,
and taking a role as the main committee leader
of a few clubs in Monash University.
My experience as a head prefect has helped me
to build my leadership qualities, take decisions, and work in a team.
SIS also helped me in my public-speaking skills. I practiced these skills
during the times when I was asked to be the host for schools’ events,
assemblies, presentations, and competitions such as the National
English Olympics
I am now in BIS (British International School)
earning my IB diploma. I've just been so busy
with the IB program, to catch up with the huge
amount of work load given.
SIS is truly like a family; everyone is so close, and the small number of
people makes it even more like a family to me. There have been ups
and downs in my life being in SIS, but being there has helped me a lot
because the teachers and everyone else have been so nice to me and
have helped me in so many ways.

I am currently studying in Perth, Australia at
Curtin University, also known as Curtin Business
School. This school is quite famous for its
business courses. Currently, I am in second
year of university and studying a double major,
Economics and Finance.
Experiences in SIS that have helped me include the many activities,
(Leadership Camp, Stock Exchange field trip, etc.) aside from regular
studies, which enable the students to know more of the real world.
These different activities allowed me and my classmates to see what
society is like, instead of studying from books alone. As SIS is also an
international school with different types of students coming from
different countries, it also enables us to learn more about cultures.
SIS also takes extra measures for international students who cannot
speak English, to help them learn better.
Marie Jeanette Suparman
(2007 to 2010)
I am now a student at Northeastern University,
in Boston, Massachusetts. I've been busy with
my schoolwork because being a university
student is way harder than being a secondary
student. I am majoring in Economics so most of
my work is related to it.
I was in SIS for quite a long time, and I took Business Studies, so Ithink that
helped me a lot. Many of the activities in SIS include public speaking, which
has made me much more comfortable and definitely moreconfident
whenever I have to present my work to a bigger audience. Other than that,
I think my socializing skills were also improved at SIS.

I have finished A levels, and I am applying to
universities now.
Nearly all my academic experiences stem from
being at SIS, so it is a place where I grew up. As
of now, I haven’t gone out to ‘experience the
real world’, but I am sure that many of the skills I learnt here will be put to

Studying at SIS has helped me become outspoken and master my
English. My teachers also taught me to persevere in whatever I do,
