Purposeful travel for passionate people Itinerary November 16- 22, 2015 Day 1, Monday: Miami / Havana (L,D) • • • • • • • Your adventure begins when we arrive in Havana after a short charter flight from Miami (it’s only an hour!) where you will met our Cuban guide. We will begin our journey of this timeless island which Christopher Columbus proclaimed to be “the most beautiful land human eyes have ever seen” and some of others have said, “so many cigars, such little time”. Enjoy your first cigar upon arrival as we have a meet and greet before departing. Enjoy a panoramic city tour in route to Havana; we’ll stop at Plaza de Revolucion, the largest square in Cuba and learn about Che Guevara, the Argentine Marxist revolutionary hero, as we use his face as a backdrop for our first group photo. Lunch at a paladar, a privately owned restaurant. Paladars are part of the new economic reforms that Raul has allowed. Visit the Partagas Cigar Shop, a true mecca for cigar lovers. Today is a special day at Partagas and the store is abuzz with activity. Hundreds of Cigar Aficionados from around the world descend on the Capital to unite for the Encuentro Amigos de Partagas. The Encuentro takes place this week; today is the kickoff, when many cigar experts and enthusiasts reunite. We will enjoy a private tour and visit the walk-in humidor. This will be the beginning of our “Cuban cigar education” as we meet some of the luminaries of the cigar industry. Hamlet and La China, two of the best rollers in Cuba and known worldwide, will be there for us to meet and give you your very first custom roll cigar! Drive along the Malecon on our way to our hotel. The Malecon is Havana's famous seaside walkway and hub of life for many Cubans who congregate along this 7 km “couch” every evening, Our first dinner will be at El Aljibe, known for its secret orange sauce, chicken, black beans, boniato, plantain and more. The restaurant is in exclusive Miramar area, once the bastion of the Cuban aristocracy before the Revolution; the grand old homes are set along wide boulevards and are now mostly occupied by embassies and foreign investment firms. If you're a little bit excited about being in Cuba and can't imagine going back to the hotel after dinner (we don't blame you). We suggest you have a nightcap & cigar at the Hotel Nacional Patio where there's a good chance you'll see some of the people you met earlier today at the Partagas Shop. It's a cigar smoker's favourite spot to have a smoke....and their mojitos are rumored to the best on the island! Day 2, Tuesday: Havana (B,L,D) • After breakfast at the hotel, we will go on a walking tour of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Havana Vieja”- Old Havana; Exploring the restored plazas, which date back to the 16th century, you will witness the greatest wealth of Spanish • • • • • • • colonial architecture in the western hemisphere. Many of the old residences, government buildings, and churches are actively being renovated under the leadership of Eusebio Leal, official historian of the city; we will learn how this renaissance is having a financial impact on Old Havana. Stop at the Maqueta de la Habana, the scale model of the old city and meet with a specialist to learn about the city planning and growth of old Havana. Visit the Hotel Ambos Mundos, where Hemingway stayed for several years and where he wrote some of his most renowned novels including 'For Whom the Bell Tolls". We will have a guided visit of his room “511” before we make it to the Rooftop Patio for a Photo-op Lunch included in Old Havana We will stop at the Conde Villanueva (the former mansion of Claudio Martinez de Pinillos), one of the best known Cigar Shops in Havana. Here we will meet with expert cigar rollers. They have made this shop a haven for lovers of Custom Rolled Cigars; cigar aficionados come from all over the world to smoke and buy their cigars. We will be treated to a discussion about the craft of cigar making. Continue the day with a visit at Emiliano Nelson Guerra's world famous 'Guayabera Shop'. Although the exact origins of the Guayabera remain a mystery, Emiliano has perfected the making of this garment. The 53 year old has made shirts by hand for the rich and famous both in Cuba and abroad. His shirts are in the closets of such luminaries as the late Hugo Chavez, Sting, Danny Glover, Prince Albert of Monaco and even Fidel Castro. A Cigar Lover himself, Nelson (as his friends call him) will take you through the process of what is involved in the making of a Guayabera. The Cuban Guayabera almost disappeared from the island but has made a comeback over the last couple of decades. A stop at the Historic Hotel Nacional de Cuba is a must… we will visit the Cuban wall of fame, the gardens, and its renowned two floor cigar store where we will meet Milagro, a female cigar roller.
