WELCOME
Welcome to the 2015 Spring
Lakes Area Home Show!
I’m back! Yes its me Jim Falconer from
Radco Truck Accessory Center / Accessory
Pro warehouse, and I am once again honored
the be the chairperson for the 2015 Mid
Minnesota Builders Association Home Show.
On behalf of our show committee, and the
executive director of MMBA, we would like to
welcome everyone to this years show.
This is an especially exciting year for us.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone
come out and experience the new facelift
given to the Essentia Health Sports Center
(formerly the Brainerd Civic Center). We have
again assembled a show featuring all facets
of the building industry, to include, general
contractors, remodelers, developers, sales
and marketing experts, architects, plumbers,
electricians, financial institutions, and much
more. In short we have you covered on
whatever you may need for your new, future, or
existing home.
We are excited to welcome back this year,
Bobby Jensen from KARE 11 and Grow With
Care. Bobby will once again be doing seminars
for us on Saturday and Sunday, this years
theme is the 11 do’s and don’t of gardening.
Bobby is always a hit at our show, when he’s
not doing seminars he makes himself available
to visit, or share a joke with you at our MMBA
welcome booth. The booth is located just inside
the entrance to the main arena.
The committee would also like to thank
Menards, they will once again be hosting our
kids build project. This year instead of a feeder,
kids between the ages of 5-12, will be building
a complete bird house, with the help of the
Menards crew. This is a no cost event and will
begin at 10:30 am on Saturday April 11th.
We ask that you arrive as close to 10:30 as
possible with your child to make sure they get
to participate, while supplies of the houses last.
In addition Crow Wing County land services
will be on hand doing complimentary water
testing again this year, so be sure to bring your
samples.
This year all of our concessions will be in the

If the thought of spring cleaning makes you long for
winter, it’s time to think about these annual chores in
a new way. By dedicating just a few days to complete
these simple tasks, you will keep your home running
smoothly and protect your investment at the same
time.
INSIDE YOUR HOME:
As the weather gets warmer it’s important to ensure
your windows are in good working condition. Inspect
all windows for proper operation and a tight fit. Clean
the window tracks and check that the weatherstripping
hasn’t cracked or torn. Preventing unwanted outside
air from leaking into your home also will reduce your
energy bills.
Remember, open windows can be hazardous,
especially to young children. Screens are designed to
keep insects from getting into a home; not to prevent
a child from falling. Parents need to take action to
lessen the potential risks of accidental falls from
windows.
To prevent outside pests from entering your home,
look for cracks and holes on the outside of your home
and seal them up. Be sure to include points where
utility lines enter the house. Also address damage to
the basement foundation and windows.
Check for evidence of termites such as sagging
floors and ceilings or dry, brown tunnels in the ground
near the home’s foundation. Seed and feed the lawn
and plant annuals, cut back perennials that need
pregrowth pruning.
SPRING
MAINTENANCE
TIPS TO
PROTECT YOUR
HOME’S VALUE:
Clean your gutters of debris. Yes, you have to do
this in the fall and the spring. Long winters bring a
mix of storms and heavy winds that can carry a lot of
debris to your gutters.
Remember, focusing on these small jobs now will
save you time and money in the future! For more
home maintenance advice, contact the Mid-Minnesota
Builders Association at 218-829-4982 or go to www.
midmnba.org for a list of our members.
Have your air conditioning system inspected and
cleaned. If your system has a filter, replace it every
three months to keep your unit working efficiently.
Warmer weather also means that pests – including
ants, roaches, rats, and termites – will be looking to
join your household. Keep them out by sealing cracks
and openings along baseboards, behind sinks, and
around pipes and windows. And, repair holes in door
and window screens.
OUTSIDE YOUR HOME:
Check the condition of glazing compound, caulking
and exterior paint. Replace or paint as needed.
Exchange glass and screens in storm doors and/
or windows. Ensure the screens are clean by washing
gently with soapy water. Inspect your roof for snow
damage.

CHECKLIST FOR KEEPING
YOUR HOME HEALTHY
A home is
often the biggest
investment you will
make in your lifetime.
It is also the place
where families will raise
children and spend many
hours making lifelong
memories. So it’s important
to maintain your home in
good condition and make sure
it offers a clean, comfortable and safe
environment for many years to come.
This checklist contains tasks you should
complete at least on an annual basis to
keep your home operating efficiently and
to protect your investment.
ANYTIME DURING THE YEAR:
qCheck all connections to your electrical
system for possible hazards. Check
cords and plugs of all electrical
appliances for fraying or signs of wear.
Repair or replace as necessary. Do not
overload extension cords.
q
Test your smoke detectors, carbon
monoxide detector and radon detector
for proper operation. Clean the units with
a vacuum or cotton swab and replace
batteries and light bulbs if needed.
qHave your heating and air conditioning
system(s) inspected and cleaned. If your
system(s) has a filter, replace it every
three months to keep your unit working
efficiently.
q
Inspect all doors and windows for
proper operation and a tight fit. Clean
the window tracks, clean and adjust
the door thresholds and check that the
weatherstripping hasn’t cracked or torn.
Preventing unwanted outside air from
leaking into your home will reduce your
energy bills.
qCheck interior paint and touch up or
repaint as needed.
qInspect the attic insulation. Make sure
the entire ceiling area is covered. Check
that the insulation has not blocked
vents in the eaves to prevent buildup of
condensation and to allow proper air
circulation. Insulation should also not
be touching the underside of the roof
sheathing.
qOil motors of appliances as directed in
instruction manuals.
qPeriodically check storage areas, closets,
and the basement to make sure no
oily rags, gas cans, painting supplies
or flammable cleaning materials have
been stored and forgotten. These items
could be a fire hazard and should be
discarded.
qCheck that the alarm and circuits of your
security system are in working order,
inspect the sensors one by one, and
check primary and backup batteries
monthly.
qInspect your stairs, steps and ladders
for damage or broken pieces that
could cause someone to fall. Make sure
handrails and railings are sturdy and
securely attached.
IN THE SPRING:
q
Check the condition of glazing
compound, caulking and exterior paint.
Replace or paint as needed.
qExchange glass and screens in storm
doors and/or windows (also in autumn).
qInspect the roof for snow damage.
qCheck for evidence of termites such as
sagging floors and ceilings or dry, brown
tunnels in the ground near the home’s
foundation.
qSeed and feed the lawn and plant
annuals. Cut back perennials that need
pre-growth pruning.
IN THE AUTUMN:
qMulch perennials that need protection
from winter weather and prune those
that should be cut back in the fall.
qRake and compost leaves.
qRemove hose connections and store
hoses to avoid freezing.
There are many more tasks that you
can complete throughout the year to keep
your home in good working order.
