109th COMMENCEMENT

Charge to the Graduates
OVERVIEW
Today you become a member of a select group of men
and women numbering in the thousands -- graduates
of Fort Hays State University. Remember the university
kindly, for it gave you several years of its very best.
The commencement ceremony does not mean a
severance of your tie to us or the university’s tie to you.
Like a good parent, its love and concern will always
be with you, ready to help you in any way possible.
Commencement does mean the beginning of a lifetime
association with your university, and not only will the
university stand with you, but it also looks to you as a
torchbearer and the promoter of its spirit.
Although we are proud of the beauty of our physical
campus, its buildings, grounds and facilities, we take
even more pride in our faculty, staff and students.
Fort Hays State University is much more than is
discernible at any one time. Your university consists of
all those who come into its environment, are touched
by its concern, its influence and all those who carry
forward its spirit. Wherever you go and whatever you
achieve, there is Fort Hays State University at work. If
the light of our university continues to shine, it must
shine through you and all those who have walked our
halls, sat in our classrooms and were a part of our total
campus community.
With a great deal of confidence, we welcome you into
this fellowship. We are not here to say “goodbye,” but
rather we say “till we meet again.” We do not intend to
sever the ties; you may go forth, but not totally away
from us. We will always claim you, and we hope you
feel the same way about those of us who remain. God
be with you and with all of us.
Courtesy To Graduates
The university wishes to express its appreciation to
the audience for extending courtesy to each graduate.
Before we begin, please be reminded that previous
graduates have expressed their appreciation for the
audience remaining seated and courteous. This allows
the names of all our graduates to be heard by family and
friends. We ask that you please turn off your cell phone
and remain seated until the end of the ceremony. Please
allow all graduates of a college to return to their seats
before applauding.
seating
Seating is available for family and friends on the bleachers
and in the balcony. Reservation of large sections of seating
is not allowed. Seating is on a first-come, first-served
basis. Security officers have been asked to monitor
seating and will request the removal of any effort or
materials intended to reserve seats. Please help us make
seating guests a pleasant experience.
Seating is available for the hearing impaired in Section
C. Rebecca Luedders will act as the sign language
interpreter for those guests requiring that service.
FIRST AID, courtesy of the Ellis County EMS, is
located on the lower level at gate 2.
Limited seating is available for the disabled in the bleacher
area on either side in front of the stage. One person, if
necessary, will be allowed to accompany an individual in this

History of Gross Memorial Coliseum
Gross Memorial Coliseum, the building in which you
are sitting, serves as the site for indoor athletics and many
additional activities.
Seating is available in Gross Memorial Coliseum for
6,196 spectators in the balcony and bleacher areas. The
facility accommodates approximately 1,400 more people
at Commencement ceremonies when seating is arranged
on the Coliseum floor for graduates and to accommodate
handicapped seating.
Gross Memorial Coliseum is named for Paul “Busch” Gross.
His relationship with the university goes back to his years as
a student athlete. Paul “Busch” Gross was an outstanding
football player on the 1917 team that was undefeated
and won the Kansas Athletic Conference championship.
He also played in the 1921 season when the conference
championship was again won by the Fort Hays Kansas
Normal School, now Fort Hays State University. This was
the last football championship for the university for thirteen
In February, 1943, Mr. Gross was employed by the
university to train cadets in the Army Air Force Flying
Training Command. The military wanted its pilots to have
solid mental and physical preparation for pre-flight school.
Cadets were given an hour of rigorous physical conditioning
each day and academic instruction in geography, history,
English, mathematics and physics.
Mr. Gross also served the university as Athletic Director. He
passed away in December 1964.
The track is one-tenth of a mile in length. A spacious
pressbox is located above the floor on the west side, and a
complete stage area for special programs is located on the
north end of the floor. Concession areas and restrooms are
available in the upstairs concourse.
This is an air-cooled (not air-conditioned) building which,
from the floor to the top of the structure, measures about
five stories high. The complex is located on the western edge
of the Fort Hays State University campus on the Highway
40 bypass.
Photos
Individuals who wish to take personal pictures beyond those
offered by the professional photographer may do so from an
area designated on either side of the stage. It is respectfully
requested that individuals refrain from taking pictures in
front of the stage and on the stage floor aisles where the
candidates are seated, as this disrupts the flow of traffic for

the candidates in the commencement ceremony. Graduates
and their families are welcome to use the stage after the
ceremony for photos. Victor E. Lounge will be available after
the ceremony for graduates to take photos with faculty.

OVERVIEW
Gross Memorial Coliseum was formally dedicated
September 22, 1973. It is part of a two-unit, multi-use
complex. M.C. Cunningham Hall, just to the south of
this structure, is home for the Department of Health and
Human Performance and the Department of Allied Health.
The two units comprise 246,214 square feet of space. This
complex cost $7.4 million to construct and took over two
years to build.
years. Paul “Busch” Gross was employed by the university
in 1934 as a backfield coach in the football program and as
head basketball coach. The football team once again won
the conference championship that year.

Honors at Graduation
There are three levels of academic honors at commencement. Summa cum laude is awarded to graduates achieving a
cumulative grade point of 3.90 or above and 3.90 or above on FHSU coursework, magna cum laude to graduates achieving
a cumulative grade point of 3.80 to 3.89 and 3.80 to 3.89 on FHSU coursework, and cum laude to graduates achieving a
cumulative grade point of 3.60 to 3.79 and 3.60 to 3.79 on FHSU coursework.
While honors will be listed in the commencement program for those who may reasonably anticipate them, the listing in the
program is not a guarantee of receiving honors. The listing and reading of honors for spring degree candidates are based on
the grade indexes achieved at the beginning of the student’s final semester. The official honor awarded based on final grade
indexes will be noted on the student’s diploma and transcript.

EDUCATION AND TECHNOLOGY
Education and technology
The College of Education and Technology takes great pride in preparing elementary and secondary
teachers, school specialists in reading, library media, counseling, school administrators, community
counselors and business/industrial personnel. We offer bachelor, master and education specialist degrees
housed in outstanding departments focused on undergraduate and graduate programs and technology
studies. The programs recently underwent a successful accreditation review from a joint state and national
team of examiners. Innovative programs such as Transition to Teaching (an alternative path to teacher
licensure) are helping ease the teacher needs in our state. Partnerships with service centers, community
colleges, and school districts strengthen the mission of the College. The College has knowledgeable,
caring faculty members who love to teach. They continue to share their enthusiasm for our profession
while preparing professional educators for success. We are proud of the impact of FHSU education and
technology graduates in Kansas schools and beyond.

President’s Distinguished Scholar
The President’s Distinguished Scholar Award was first awarded in 1989. All unclassified employees of the
university are eligible for consideration each year and are evaluated for this honor by analysis of their performance
in the categories of research/creative activities, service, and instruction. Acceptable levels of performance must be
demonstrated in service and instruction, with the primary focus of this award being on research/creative activities.
Applications are reviewed by an evaluation committee and a recommendation is forwarded to the president of the
university.
The honoree presents a scholarly lecture during the Honors Convocation. The awardee is recognized on a plaque
displayed in the Memorial Union, given a certificate, lapel pin, specially-designed medallion, and receives a monetary
acknowledgement.

AWARDS
The prestigious Pilot Award, established by the Alumni Association in 1974, annually recognized two outstanding faculty
members, one male and one female. Full-time teaching faculty became eligible after two years of continuous service on the
campus of Fort Hays State University. In 1997, the awards committee of the Alumni Association Board of Directors revised
the criteria so that any teaching faculty member would be eligible after three years of continuous service to FHSU. The past
recipients would also be eligible to receive this honor again after a five-year waiting period. Finally, the award was to be given
to one faculty member irrespective of gender rather than two. Candidates are nominated by members of the graduating
senior class on the basis of professional excellence and commitment to outstanding teaching. The recipient is chosen by a
committee of seniors, faculty, and Alumni Association Board members.
AWARDS
Torch Award
The coveted Torch Award was established in 1974 by the Alumni Association to recognize one male and one female outstanding
senior. In 1991, the awards committee of the Alumni Association Board of Directors revised the criteria to recommend the
selection of one senior recipient. Candidates are nominated by members of the faculty on the basis of leadership and academic
excellence. A committee of faculty, administrators, and Alumni Association Board members selects the recipient.

FORT HAYS STATE UNIVERSITY AWARDS, ACADEMIC HISTORY AND RECOGNITION
Academic History
Freda Schwaller, Fred E. Lindley and Ida Shaffer were the
first graduates of the Western Branch of the Kansas State
Normal School.
Final exams and commencement were cancelled in May
1951 after a flood hit the campus on May 22. The graduates
were honored at the summer school commencement later
that year.
Through the years, commencement exercises have been held
in Sheridan Coliseum, Lewis Field and Gross Memorial
Coliseum.
History of the Academic Mace
The mace has an ancient history as a symbol of authority. In
medieval times it was a studded, clublike weapon. Made of
iron and capable of breaking armor, these giant clubs were
chiefly used by knights. They were also often borne by a
royal bodyguard to protect the king in processions.
By the 14th century, maces assumed more ceremonial
functions and lost their warlike appearance. They were often
decorated with jewels and precious metals. The ceremonial
mace stands for lawful power and regal authority.
Eventually the Mace also became a symbol for academic
institutions, an emblem of order and authority in the
pageantry of ceremonial occasions. The first dated record
of the ceremonial academic mace goes back to 1385 at the
University of Vienna.
An academic mace is traditionally carried in procession and
mounted on stage whenever degrees are granted or when
the faculty is assembled in formal academic dress. During
commencement ceremonies at Fort Hays State University,
a mace is carried by the University Registrar before the
president and other dignitaries in the platform party.
The Fort Hays State University mace was designed and
crafted by Mr. Dale Ficken, Associate Professor of Art, in
late August - September 1969 for the inauguration of Dr.
John W. Gustad, the fifth president in the history of Fort
Hays State University, on October 5, 1969.
University Anthem & Other Songs
In the history of FHSU, there have been three different
songs that were adopted by general usage.
The words and music of the first song, the Kansas State
Teacher’s College Hymn, were written by Pearl Sidenius,
who was a member of the faculty from 1915 to 1917.
Some years later, Dr. Rob Roy Macgregor, 1928-1935
faculty member, wrote the words of a College Anthem
which was sung to the tune of “Men of Harlech.”
Jack Juergens, a music faculty member from 1948 to 1951,
wrote the words and music of a new College Anthem, the
third of the songs to be used as the Alma Mater song by
students and faculty. This is the same University Anthem
that we sing today. Words to the University Anthem can be
found on the inside of the back cover.
The University Fight Song, used in athletic contests, was
adapted from a Northwestern University song.
University Colors
Soon after President Lewis came to the campus, he
suggested that since the official color of the school was
old gold (from the previous connection with the Normal
School at Emporia) the school ought to adopt an additional
color to distinguish it from Emporia. The color suggested
was black. This would give the school the colors of gold and
black, which would enable it to adopt the tiger as its athletic
symbol. President Lewis was from Missouri, where he was,
of course, loyal to the Missouri “Tigers.”

ACADEMIC HISTORY
History of Commencement
The First Annual Commencement took place on July 2,
1903 at the Grand Army of the Republic Hall in Hays,
after being postponed from May 1903 because one of
the graduates could not get back to Hays from Emporia.
Flooding prevented the train from making its trip.
ACADEMIC HISTORY
Academic Regalia
The academic apparel worn at commencement
ceremonies has its origins in the 12th and 13th centuries
when scholars (whether student or teacher) at European
universities wore hoods and gowns as their customary,
daily attire. The long gowns may have been necessary
for warmth in unheated buildings. Since there was a
close tie between early universities and the Church, it is
not surprising that academic gowns resembled cassocks
and elaborate clerical vestments. The American fashion
of academic caps and gowns derives mainly from the
gowns worn at Oxford University, created by a grant
from the Papacy in 1214.
Like the gown, the hood differs for the various degrees.
The doctor’s hood is the longest and is a fuller shape
than the master’s hood and is usually bordered with
velvet, the color of which indicates the kind of degree.
The hood is lined with silk in the colors of the institution
that granted the degree. The edging of the hood is velvet
or velveteen, three inches wide for the master’s hood and
five inches wide for the doctor’s hood. The length of the
master’s hood is 3 ½ feet, and the length of the doctor’s
hood is 4 feet. The traditional rule is that a candidate for
a degree should not wear the hood of that degree until it
is actually conferred.
The bachelor’s gown is primarily distinguished by its long
pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is similar, except for
having oblong sleeves from which the forearm protrudes
through a slit near the elbow. The doctor’s gown has
rounded sleeves and also has velvet panels around the
neck and down the front of the gown, as well as three
velvet bars on the sleeves. Gowns for the bachelor’s
and master’s degrees are untrimmed. The gown for the
doctor’s degree is faced down the front with black velvet.
The assignment of colors to signify certain degrees was
a later development and was standardized in the United
States in the late 19th century. A significant contribution
to the development of this system was made by Gardner
Cotrell Leonard of Albany, New York. Mr. Leonard
designed gowns for his class at Williams College.
Hoods are typically worn with the master’s and doctoral
gowns. Hoods are permitted to be worn with the
bachelor’s gown, but it is customary in many large
institutions to dispense with the hood.
Originally, the hood was used as a cowl, cape, and—
when hung from the shoulder—a sack to collect alms.
It is said that when large wigs were in fashion, the cap
section of the hood then fell back clear of the wig. This
hood style continues to today, with the narrow end of
the hood shaped as a neckband connecting the two
halves of the cape.
Following the publication of an article by him on
academic dress in 1893, he was invited to work with an
Intercollegiate Commission consisting of representatives
of leading institutions of higher education to establish a
suitable system of academic apparel. The Commission
met at Columbia University in 1895 and adopted a
code of academic dress which prescribed the colors to
represent the fields of academic learning.
In 1932 the American Council on Education (ACE)
reviewed and approved the code of academic dress.
Again in 1959, the ACE reviewed the costume code and
made several changes.
In 1986, the ACE updated the code and added a
sentence clarifying the use of the color dark blue for the
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree.
For all academic purposes, the colors associated with the different academic disciplines are as follows:
Agriculture- Maize
Arts, Letters, Humanities- White
Commerce, Accountancy, BusinessDrab

The traditional cap is the mortarboard with black cloth cover. Although it came into popular use in the 16th
Century, its origins are clouded. Some believe it is shaped to resemble a book; others claim it is patterned after the
mortarboard of a master craftsman or the quadrangle shape of an Oxford campus. The mortarboard has a long tassel
that is fastened by a button on the top. The tassel worn at some institutions reflects the color representing the degree
earned; however, the tassel worn at Fort Hays State University represents the traditional colors of the university:
black and gold.

ACADEMIC HISTORY
University Seal
The circular seal was originally adopted in 1934. The artist
who designed it was Marjorie Meade Jacobs.
The college was established on the old Fort Hays military
reservation. The building depicted in the seal is the old
stone block house, which was a part of the fort. In typical
fashion for the building, the seal features a flag pole and hills
in the background.
In 1992, it was updated for digital purposes by FHSU
Creative Director Mary Ridgway.
The university seal is exclusively reserved for official
documents such as diplomas, transcripts, certificates and
ceremonial recognition gifts.
Banners and Flags
During the processional, a representative from each college carries a banner stating the college’s name. The banner signifies
the division of the university colleges. Flags are displayed during the ceremonies in recognition of the graduates’ countries of
origin. For 2012, the following countries are represented among FHSU graduates.
Algeria
Australia
Bahamas
Botswana
Brazil
Canada
Chile
China
Germany
France
Haiti
Hong Kong
Japan
Kenya
Mexico
Nepal
Nigeria
Paraguay
Peru
Saudi Arabia
South Korea
Vietnam
Sweden
Taiwan
Turkey
Uruguay
Military flags are also displayed in recognition of those graduates who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces.
President’s Medallion
In 1969, Dr. John W. Gustad approached Mr. John Thorns, art faculty member, concerning FHSU’s lack of symbols
connected with the formality of office, such as a medallion or mace. To rectify this, Gustad commissioned the Department
of Art and Design to create three items for his presidential inauguration: a mace, a relief statue and a presidential medallion.
The mace, created by Mr. Dale Ficken, is typically used for ceremonial purposes. More information on the mace can be
found on page 65.
Mr. Jim Hinkhouse designed the relief sculpture, second of the three symbols, which was placed at the back of the room
during Gustad’s inauguration. This sculpture has since been destroyed.
The presidential medallion was fashioned by Mr. Olli Valanne. Made of silver, this piece of jewelry features a unique design.
According to Thorns, the medallion was created “in recognition of the individual who is president.” It is to be used in
conjunction with all academic affairs and is worn any time the president of the university wears his academic regalia.
The medallion has been passed down to each consecutive president after Gustad and will continue to represent the leadership
and FHSU in the future.

University Mascot
No one knows for certain how the Tiger came to be FHSU’s
mascot, but it may have been the brainchild of W.A. Lewis,
the president of the Western Branch Normal School (FHSU).
What is certain is that the FHSU symbol made his debut in
1914, when tiger head insignias were first sewn onto school
jerseys. In that same year, Ralph Archer, a sports reporter for
the Leader, first referred to FHSU students as “Tigers.”
The image rapidly gained popularity on campus. In 1919, the
yearbook published the first drawing of the mascot. He wore
a soldier’s cap, and one of his paws rested on a German war
helmet to symbolize the defeat of the Kaiser in World War I.
Despite his threatening stance, the Tiger showed no ferocity
in his face. He had bulging eyes and an engaging smile from
which a curled tongue dangled, giving him the appearance of
an oversized pussycat.
However, that image changed in 1924, when the Reveille Tiger
crouched on all fours and snarled at the readers. This powerful
pose was used to introduce the sports pages, and the athletic
department used it as a symbol of aggressiveness.
The Tiger retained his fierce look through the 1930s, perhaps as
a symbol of the tough economic conditions of the Depression.
But in 1932, he towered over a herd of American bison on
the title page of the Reveille, proving that he refused to be
buffaloed by the times. And in the 1937 yearbook, the Tiger
served as a background for the top four football players of the
year. He seemed to clutch a player in one paw while lashing
out savagely with the other.
By 1941, the Tiger had become more of a true “college cat” by
donning pants and shoes, walking upright, smiling and even
holding hands with a coy female feline on the first page of the
Reveille.
68
However, the mascot did regain his fighting image in the
early 1950s when car decals featured him in a uniform
from Custer’s Seventh Cavalry, a sharp saber in his paw
and a defiant snarl on his face.
In 1963, the best known version of the mascot appeared
-- a tiger happily carrying the school banner. This
cheerful cat was used to add personality to school shirts,
steins and stationery. He could also be seen on road
signs just outside Hays and Manhattan pointing the way
to his home campus.
The Tiger returned to his more serious nature in 1978,
when he was featured in a circular logo designed by
Jackquie Harris Meitler, Palco art student. The Tiger was
drawn as though he were a photographic negative; that
is, his black stripes were white, and vice versa.
In 1999, President Hammond directed the university’s
Integrated Marketing Committee to develop a Tiger.
An official new Tiger graphic was created based on the
old Tiger head that was emblazoned at that time on the
basketball court.
After the new Tiger graphic was tested with students,
faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the university -- and
a few tweaks made -- President Hammond unveiled the
first official mascot in the university’s long history in a
public ceremony during the spring 2000 semester.
A few months later, based on suggestions from students,
the new mascot was given his name, Victor E. Tiger.
Alumnus Larry Dreiling, who played the role of the
FHSU mascot as a student, purchased the first Victor E.
Tiger mascot suit for the university. On April 3, 2000,
the current mascot was unveiled. It is now the only
acceptable image of the university’s Tiger.

On Campus Students
Fort Hays State University’s physical campus is home to an increasingly rich mix of traditional age (18-24 years) and non-traditional age
(25-55 years) students from a variety of ethnic, social and cultural backgrounds. Many of the approximately 4,965 on-campus learners are
Kansas commuters with a growing number of international students helping to enrich the traditional learning environment.
First Generation College Students
Fort Hays State University prides itself on first generation college students. Individuals can claim first generation student status if neither
one of their parents or guardians possess a four-year degree.
Virtual College Students
Students who study at a distance using various forms of technology sometimes blended with face-to-face learning approaches are defined
at Virtual College students. Sometimes, on-campus students take one or more virtual courses to complement their on-campus learning
experience. FHSU uses the virtual learning environment as a strategic asset to offer complete degrees or help retain students, increase
graduation rates and deliver professional development training. In addition, this type of learning experience may be used to help
internationalize the campus and the curriculum through global delivery of courses and programs. The university’s Virtual College is the
delivery vehicle for both domestic and international programming from each of the university’s four academic colleges.
Military/Veteran Students
There are military programs for both active and inactive military personnel and their spouses. These courses are offered through the Virtual
College, providing flexibility to meet the needs of our servicemen and servicewomen.
The following branches of the military are currently represented at FHSU: Army National Guard Institute, Coast Guard Institute,
ConAP, DANTES, GoArmyEd, Navy College Partnership Distance Learning Partnership, SOCAD, SOCCOAST, SOCCOAST Afloat
Institutional Partnership, SOCMAR and SOCNAV.
International Students
Fort Hays State University hosts approximately 350 on-campus international students each year from over 25 countries. International
students are fully blended into the classroom setting, allowing for a greater level of cultural awareness campuswide. This is increasingly
important in reinforcing the university’s brand of “Forward thinking, World ready.”
The countries currently represented on the campus of FHSU are: Algeria, Australia, Bahamas, Botswana, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China,
Germany, France, Haiti, Hong Kong, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, Paraguay, Peru, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Vietnam,
Sweden, Taiwan, Turkey and Uruguay.
International Partnerships
Fort Hays State University was the first American university to be approved by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of
China to offer dual bachelor’s degrees under the framework of the Sino-Foreign University of Cooperation in Running Schools.
In Fall 2000, FHSU began offering courses in mainland China to 40 students.
Currently, FHSU is serving over 3,600 students at Sias International University in Xinzheng, Henan, and Shenyang Normal University
in Shenyang, Liaoning, China. Chinese students complete the degrees in their home country and FHSU conducts a similar graduation
at these partner universities.
