The Animal Behavior Service focuses on the behavior of companion animals,
the prevention of behavior problems through client education, and the
assessment and treatment of existing behavior problems. Our service provides
house calls and in-clinic consultations providing diagnosis, prognosis, and
treatment for all pet behavioral problems (canine, feline, equine, avian, and
other companion animals).
Clients are asked to complete a pre-appointment questionnaire, bring a video
of the pet’s undesired behavior, and a log of incidents with a dexcription of the
context in which the problem occures (frequency, duration, location, events, or
persons involved). Family members and other household pets may be asked to
attend appointments.
Contact Information
Intensive care treatment is available for patients requiring hospitalization (e.g.,
patients with congestive heart failure, pericardial effusion, syncope due to an
arrhythmia, or arrhythmia evaulation).

We encourage referring veterinarians to provide a summary of existing medical
problems, their current treatment, and treatment prescribed for the behavior
problem. The initial appointment lasts about two to three hours. A detailed
written summary of recommendations is mailed to the client and referring
DVM after the appointment.
Services commonly provided through cardiology include:
▪▪ OFA heart certifications/prebreeding evaluation
▪▪ Electrocardiography
▪▪ 24-hour ambulatory electrocardiography
▪▪ Radio-telemetric ECG monitoring
▪▪ Echocardiography
▪▪ Transvenous pacemaker implantations
▪▪ Minimally-invasive catheterization procedures
▪▪ Pericardiocentesis

The Complementary and Alternative Medicine Service uses both western
and traditional oriental medicine for diagnosis and treatment, providing a
unique, comprehensive approach to veterinary health care. The patient may
also be referred to one of the other specialty services offered by the VMC
(such as internal medicine or neurology) before or after being evaluated by the
integrative medicine staff.
Traditional veterinary oriental medicine can be used to treat most conditions
as well as relieving pain, strengthening the immune system, and improving
specific or overall organ function.
Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Friday (8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.)
and other times by special
arrangement.
Consultative services are available
on request for hospitalized
patients.
Cases seen at the dental service include but are not limited to periodontics,
endodontics, oral surgery (including extractions, palate surgery, oral tumors,
trauma, and fractures), restorations (including crowns), orthodontics, and oral
medicine. We also provide an equine dental clinic where advanced equine oral
and dental cases are seen working closely with the equine medicine and surgery
team.
While the dental operatory is fully capable of managing and treating all oral
diseases, the dental service works closely and consults with other services at the
Veterinary Medical Center to ensure the pet receives the best care possible.

The Neurology service provides both medical and surgical diagnosis and
treatment for disorders of the brain, muscles, nerves, and spinal cord. Patients
are generally seen on a referral basis with diagnostics and/or surgeries set up to
follow on a future date unless triaged as a neurological emergency.
The area’s most advanced diagnostic capabilities, with GE igna HDx 3.0T
MRI, Toshiba 64-slice CT, Cadwell Sierra Wave electrodiagnositic machine,
electromyography, nerve conduction studies, cerebrospinal tap and analysis,
and brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER hearing tests), help ensure an
accurate diagnosis in complicated neurological cases. The neurology service,
in combination with small animal surgery, provides surgical intervention for
urgent neurological cases 24/7.
Disease management includes intervertebral disc disease, idiopathic/cryptogeic
epilepsy, brain and spinal tumors, syringomyelia and chiari-like malformation,
cervical spondylomyelopathy, spinal stabilization techniques, encephalitis,
meningitis, vestibular disease, and hydrocephalus.
Providers
The Nutrition Service also provides a weight loss clinic with outpatient
appointments to determine the cause of obesity and to assess client and pet
behavior. A variety of therapeutic diets are used for weight loss and may
be used to develop a weight plan tailored to individual family and the pet’s
medical and nutritional needs. Partnering with the owner and other members
of the healthcare team is emphasized.

The Oncology Service provides a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic
options for pets with cancer, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation
therapy. Staffed by a dedicated team of veterinarians, veterinary technicians,
and researchers, the oncology group gives loving care for pets with cancer, and
conducts advanced research, often in collaboration with investigators studying
similar cancers in humans. This ensures that your pet has the very latest in
diagnostics and therapeutics. The VMC has the area’s only linear accelerator for
radiation treatment capabilities and is one of the only programs in the nation
to offer microwave ablation for treatment of certain tumors.
We provide all clients with an estimate of prognosis and explain both curativeintent and palliative care options. Clients can expect a discussion of potential
benefits and side effects as well as an estimate of costs for any therapies
proposed.
The Ophthalmology Service provides state-of-the-art clinical service, teaching,

24/7 Emergency:
612-625-VETS (8387)
The University of Minnesota VMC recognizes the unique and enduring
bonds that form between people and their animals — animals who are family
members, confidantes, guardians, and best friends. When these bonds are tested
by illness, behavior problems, injury, or death, it can feel overwhelming. In an
effort to provide the most comprehensive care for patients and their families,
the VMC offers the services of trained social work staff who understand both
the joys and the challenges associated with animal companionship.
Services commonly provided include:
▪▪ Support and nonmedical guidance for treatment decisions
▪▪ Assistance with end-of-life planning
▪▪ Family-centered euthanasia support
▪▪ Grief counseling and education
▪▪ Referrals to community resources
Social Work Services are complimentary and confidential for all VMC clients
and their families.
