Lizzy Talk
Think out of the box for your senior dog’s care
As our pets get older, they meet physical and sometimes emotional challenges.
These challenges can be orthopedic, digestive, structural in nature, or an
emotional or anxiety problem. While western medicine veterinarians can
help with many of these issues, sometimes a pet owner is stressed when
typical medicine no longer works. When that happens, owners can give up
and resign themselves to putting their animal down. Alternative treatments
may not only save the pet but also give the pet several more years of love and
companionship to the owner.
Some types of alternative medicine treatments to consider are acupuncture,
chiropractic, massage, essential oils, or even nutritional counseling. As pets
age, their digestive tract can change and problems with colitis or irritable
bowel can occur. A simple diet modification can make a world of difference
in the pet’s eating and digestive habits. Sophie, an 11-year-old collie had
stopped eating, and after all the usual tests (x-rays, labs, etc.) turned up
nothing, an alternative medicine doctor found out that her TMJ joint was
misaligned and chiropractic adjustments helped her chew and begin eating
again. A major change in her diet also contributed to a better quality of life.
After these out-of-the box changes, Sophie is almost 13 and still working as
a therapy dog.
Lizzy’s Fund was established in 2012 at the
Naperville Area Humane Society to help senior
pets who, for whatever reason, have had to be
given up by their owners. So far, over 40 senior
dogs have been helped and ultimately adopted
after their care (whatever was needed) was paid
for by the Lizzy Fund. If you can help these senior
pets, please make a donation to the Naperville
Area Humane Society and mark “Lizzy’s Fund”
in the memo section of your check.
Visits to a qualified animal chiropractor can help with an animal’s pain
due to arthritis or degenerative disease. Acupuncture done by a qualified
veterinarian can ease not only orthopedic and digestive issues but also sooth anxiety and emotional problems.
Don’t give up when you pet gets older and traditional forms of treatment no longer work. Lizzy’s former veterinarian
told her owners to “give up” when she turned 9 years old. With alternative medicine treatments, she continued to have a
wonderful life and enrich her owner’s lives until she was 16 ½!
