―When you invest your time, you make a goal and
a decision of something that you want to accomplish. Whether it's achieving high grades in
school, be athletic, being a righteous person, or
going down and to do community service to help
someone in need, whatever it is you choose to do,
you're investing your time in that.‖

A Reflection on Friday’s Khutbah
by Zainab Masood, Samiyah Hoque, Marifa Siddique
and Sumaiya Chowdhury
7th grade
I lost the game!
Oh, how lame
What would I do without fame?
Maybe should have a lion tamed,
The tears ran down my cheeks
Remembering the memories of the mountain peaks
Or the dripping from the wall leaks
Maybe should have taken lessons from a guy named Sleek.
The pain stayed inside me
As strong as burning hot tea
Or as powerful as a screaming employee when you don’t
pay the fee
Maybe I should’ve asked a guy named Lee.
Well I can cry for too long
Maybe I’ll sing a song
Or play ping pong
Maybe I’ll ask a guy named Wong.
We were so motivated by one of Brother Mohammed’s
khutbahs that we discussed it together later. We learned
many things from the Khutbah. It made us realize that it
is important to care for each other and to pray and
make dua’a for one another. Also, the stories that were
mentioned in the Khutbah were inspirational and entertaining. We learned that we should forgive each other
for the big things as well as the small things because we
want forgiveness from Allah so why shouldn’t we grant
it to others? Our goal is to implement the things that we
learned from Brother Mohammed’s khutbah as well as
all the other khutbahs into our daily lives,
Insha-Allah. May Allah give us the ability to
do so. Aameen.
Social media…an addiction for teens of our generation? Hundreds
of teens are on social media multiple times throughout the day. For many
of these teens, social media is a good thing but for others social media has
a very severe and negative effect on teens. A few negative effects are
cyberbullying, stalking and lack of interactions outside of the internet
world.
Cyberbullying is one of the negative sides of social media. Technology has made it easier for teens throughout the world to be able to access social media. They are able to be connected constantly. This makes it
easier for teens to bully each other. This form of bullying has caused great
harm for many teens and has led them to hurt themselves physically.
Stalking is another reason that teens should be wary of social media. People with bad intentions in social media can hunt down innocent
teens. They are able to do this because teens now a days reveal their personal information easily. After stalkers have “hunted” down their target
the victims can be physically harmed.
Some people say that social media is good for teens. They say this
because it allows “today’s teens to develop emotional bonds, their own
identities, and abilities to communicate and work with others” (Murashev). While this is true that teen might be able to make these
“emotional” bonds online, they slowly begin to lose the ability to socially
interact with real life people. Teens might be able to pick up the skill of
bonding online slowly this might restrict them to only be able to bond
2 online.
Hence, even though some may say
there are advantages to social media,
there is much more at risk for teen and
therefore, people should take more precautions when interacting with people
in the internet.

Islamic day was quite the hit! Every grade presented something fun,
enjoyable and/or educational in terms of Islam.
Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th grade sang sweet and
meaningful nasheeds like ―Muhammad Nabeena‖ and ―What Did I Do
Today?‖ Students from 4th and 5th grade performed skits that taught
us all lessons on being grateful and respecting one’s parents. Also, a
few students from 7th and 8th grade gave speeches with messages that
we should implement in our everyday lives. And to end the program,
there were two Powerpoint presentations from 9th grade on modesty
and the Day of Judgment.
It was definitely an amazing way to end the marking period right before sprint break. The program was not only for students but also
open to parents. May we all benefit from what we learned that day!

Model UN
by Parsha Zaman
8th Grade
Model UN is a fun and
useful extracurricular activity. The club teaches us
about major issues in today's world and helps us
learn more about different
countries. By joining model
UN, you can learn how to
research and debating tactics. Model UN shows us
how the real world will look
like and it gets us ready for
high school and college.
When you are ready to attend your first conference,
you get to go to different
schools and discuss the issue with other people and
have debates. This club also
helps students socialize.
Last week, some of the 7th
and 8th graders attended
their first conference at
Bronx High School of Science. Model UN is a fun way
to learn about the world and
helps you develop leadership skills. If you would like
to join, please contact Br.
Mohammed Haque, the 8th
Grade homeroom teacher.

The trip to the Sports
Complex was very fun
and enjoyable. When
you enter the complex,
you can see the walls
decorated with graffiti
and a store where you
can customize shirts
and hats. From our
school there were two
different groups.

The first group was on the first floor where they
played basketball and did rock climbing. The second
group went downstairs where they played softball,
soccer, and dodge ball. After many intense matches of
soccer and basketball, all of us had some lunch. Then,
the groups switched areas allowing group one to go

Words from Our Respected
Teachers:
First grade is learning about the solar system. But that’s not all. They’re imagining
that they are on a different planet and are
writing letter to their teachers back home
on Earth!
(Sr. Ireen and Sr. Munjeena)
Never make a promise when you’re
happy, and never make a decision when
you’re angry.
(Br. Salah)
To be successful in life you must do two things: Firstly
respect your parents for if you do so Allah will make
everything easy in your life. The second is, never erase
your work out of frustration. It’s alright. Take it one
step at a time and your work with be fast and easy.
(Sr. Falastine)
I would describe my experience as a humbling learning experience. I would say to the students: follow
your dreams, never give up, and never let others put
you down. Always believe in yourself and before anyone else ask Allah (swt) for help.
(Br. Mohammed)
This year in our Universal Pre-K class we have a
group of energetic students. Right now they are learning about neighborhoods and transportation. We are
trying to relate what they are learning to the different
activities we do in class to enhance their
understanding.
A quote that has stuck with me from the time I was about 13
years old is one that my English teacher would always say to
the class. She would say "win or lose by the way you choose."
If I want to succeed in life I have to make the right choices.
Likewise, if I choose to make the wrong choices then it is
with those decisions I will lose. This quote has stuck with me
for many years and this simple reminder drives me to become better each day.
(Sr. Amilah)
If man were just with his creator, he would realize via
the worldly enjoyment that he deprived him of, and it
being far greater than what he gave him of its enjoyment. --- Ibn al-Qayyim
(Sr. Adilah)
I believe that students should understand that they are
in a rare phase of their life: they are young and capable
of learning and molding their futures, and they can do
all of this within an Islamic environment build by their
parents and the community just for them. I think students should take a moment to appreciate that, and try
their best to learn both Islamic and worldly knowledge
while they still have this chance.
(Br. Soheeb)
I thank Allah for being given the opportunity to work
with students, staff and parents who are committed to
education through the scope of Islam. My advice to all
students is to always set high goals and do everything to
achieve those goals because only then will they realize
that, with the grace of Allah, they can be better than
what they expected.
(Sr. Elma)
(Sr. Ansia and Sr. Nargish)
Live life with sincerity.
Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only
through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be
strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.—
Hellen Keller
(Sister Ahsana)
Most important attitude that can be formed is that
of desire to go on learning.—John Dewey
(Sr. Sarah)
(Mrs. Khan)
Discipline works best with a balance of love, respect,
clearly defined rules, and understanding.
(Sr. Arfin and Sr. Shahana)
The best answer will come from the person who
controls his/her anger.
(Sr. Mouna)
