PRESENTATION
OSSA, founded in 1952, is a leading company in the underground construction sector specializing in three business
areas: Construction, Energy and Mining.
Both in underground excavations by traditional method (NATM), as well as in tunneling with TBM, and roadheader mining,
OSSA is a solid underground works partner for important industrial and construction groups internationally. At OSSA
we are highly commited to Quality, Health and safety, and Environment, and we invest in Research and Development
Projects at an international level. We promote a culture of respect and teamwork among our team.
OSSA has vast recent experience both in high speed railway tunnels with over 60 km of high speed rail tunneling projects
in the last five years, leading the Spanish market in this specialty, and also in underground power plants, having built
over fifteen underground plants with some of the largest underground caverns in the world. As a recent highlight, we are
participating in the design and construction of the Hong Kong to Shangai High Speed Rail Line.
Internationally OSSA has executed works in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Colombia, Brasil
and Nicaragua and is recently focusing its tendering activity in North America, Central America, Asia, Canada and Great Britain.
After 60 years of success, our strategy is to continue expanding internationally, and to support large civil engineering and
mining industry clients at all levels, contributing our vast technical expertise and our equipment fleet, while prioritizing
health and safety and innovation in all our projects.
SAFETY
Safety is Obras Subterraneas, S.A.’s main asset from the time when its operations begin, demanded by the specialisation
required for the works carried out underground.
The company’s staff have a high degree of professionalism and specialisation, which has been achieved after many years
of training and the transfer of know how. Working in confined spaces with the presence of gas, dust, noise, low visibility
and the use of explosives means that the Obras Subterraneas, S.A.’s security department is the most relevant in the
company.
The use of cutting-edge, innovative techniques in the field of underground works requires the continuous training of the
company’s human resources.

The main project consists of the excavation and support for two double-track tunnels, tunnel 1 with a length of
1,517.9 m (1,512.9 m bored) and tunnel 2 with a length of 1,455.2 m (1,452.7 m bored), both tunnels having an
open cross-section of 85 m2. The tunnel has been built by the conventional method, with blasting in areas of sound
rock and a backhoe loader in those where the terrain is of poorer quality, using the construction principles of the New
Austrian Method (NATM).
To comply with safety standards two emergency galleries have been constructed. The first gallery is 60 m long and
connects with tunnel 1, and the second connects with tunnel 2 and has a length of 401 m.
The main support elements used both in the tunnels and in the evacuation galleries are: shotcrete, Mn-16 expansion
rock bolts, type TH-29 and HEB-160 trusses and 150x150x6 mm steel mesh.

Construction of the Vitoria-Bilbao-San Sebastian high speed platform.
Section: Mondragón – Elorrio.
The initial work involved the construction of 2 double-track rail lines, known as the Karraskain and Udalaitz tunnels,
measuring 410 and 3,160 m respectively.
Both tunnels with a gauge of 85 m².
The following works were also carried out in the Project the levelling of 337 m, two viaducts measuring 713 m in total,
the false tunnels at the entrance and exit of the tunnels, and complementary works.
The main support elements applied in the tunnels are: 8,235 m³ of fibre-free shotcrete, 12,951 m³ of fibre-reinforced
shotcrete, 20,326 units of 4 mm-long bolts, 239 units of TH-29 trusses and 766 units of HEB-140 trusses.
The tunnels will also be covered with HM-25 concrete with 40 cm of concrete, and will also be waterproofed by fitting
58,626 m² of 2 mm and 3mm PVC laminate.

INFORMATION
All the tunnels have been constructed using the New Austrian Method (NATM), by drill and blast in the areas where the
material is of high geotechnical quality and with backhoe loaders with hammers in the poor-quality areas. The final
cross-section of the tunnels is 85 m2. The Quinteiro tunnel has an emergency gallery with a length of 396 m and a
cross-section of 32 m2.
The works also include remodelling the marshalling yard, a 82 m long overpass, five underpasses, thirteen drainage
works, four walls and replacement of affected services, roads and rights of way.

Construction of the Madrid-Valencia high speed platform, the section length being 4.7 km The initial work involved the
construction of the double-track rail tunnel known as the Tunnel del Regajal.
Difficult construction from a geological and geotechnical point of view and because of the high environmental value of
the area covered.
Certain zones of the tunnel were built with a support by applying micropile underpinning, double bolt covers and fitting
of Gewi bolts.
It was also necessary to undertake a water filtration test using epoxy and polyurethane-acrylic resins.
The budget also includes the following works: the false tunnels of the north and south outlets, measuring 23 m and
334 respectively.
Also a 266 m-long viaduct and 2 overpasses.

Work involved the construction of a downhill entrance gallery with a 6.2% slope and 5,466 m in length. Besides the
excavation of two parallel tunnels of 4,166 m and 3,189 m in length and 56 m² gauge, a cavity of 107 m in length and
426 m² gauge was undertaken. All these works belong to the León-Asturias high-speed line.
Except for the tunnels that were excavated with TBM, the other galleries were boreholed and airblasted.
To cover the parallel tunnels, 600 and 500 mm reinforced-concrete ring segments measuring 1.5 m in length were used,
placed on 6+1 rings.
Given the nature of the site and the size of the gallery, an in-depth pre-analysis of the site was undertaken.
The initial works were: 1,072,922 m² of tunnel excavation, 39,945 m² of cavity excavation, 79,512 m² of varying-gauge
gallery excavation, 14,365 m³ of steel fibre reinforced concrete, 122,216 ml of 32 mm-diameter bolts, 101,333 ml of 22

m was also built, 2 drainage works of 90.35 in total length and the repositioning of amenities and supplies. The principal
support units placed in the tunnels were: 35, 643 m³ of reinforced concrete with fibres, 41,585 m of bolts of Ø = 25 mm
and 4 m in length, 198 TH-29 trusses and 153 units of HEB-160, 31,404 m² of wire mesh 100x100x6 mm.
In the less favourable areas of the tunnels, these were excavated with a central buttress and inverted arch y sealed at the front.
Tunnel waterproofing consisted of 163,159 m² of geotextile laminate >300 g/m² of polypropylene fibre and 143,584 m²
PVC laminate 1.5- 2 mm H – 250 concrete covering.
