A bit about Red Cypress
M
C Custom Log Homes constructs its homes from the
heart of red cypress trees. Part of
the redwood family and considered
a hard wood, it has numerous other
names given to it. Known also as
bald cypress, southern cypress, gulf
cypress, yellow cypress, swamp cypress and white cypress.
Cypress trees grow mainly along
the southern coastal and inland
areas predominantly found near
swampy regions and wetlands. The
tree produces cypressine, a saptype oil that preserves the wood
naturally resisting decay, repelling
insects and mold.
Sought for its natural ability to
withstand moisture and temperature variations, cypress has been
commonly used for years on coastal and resort homes and is used to
construct sturdy structures. Red cypress is often used to make docks,
boats and bridges. The Seminole
indian tribe used the wood to make
canoes. Pines do not possess any
natural insect or decay resisting
abilities after logging, they are usually treated with chemicals.
Wood from cypress is relatively

between about 450 and 600 on the
Janka hardness scale. By comparison, eastern white pine rates only
380, while red oak has a hardness
between 1060 and 1290, depending on species and growing region.
This moderate hardness makes cypress relatively easy to work without predisposing it to easy denting
or scratches.
Cypress grows slowly, so the rings
are much closer with very few knots,
making the wood more energy efficient, decreasing shrinkage, which
makes it more durable and stable,
