118 countries around the world, with more than 25,000 members
working in senior leadership positions.

Vietnam.
CPA Australia has had presence in Malaysia since 1956, during
which significant contributions were made to the development of
the Malaysian accounting profession. Since then, the strength of
the CPA Australia brand has grown from year to year and as we
celebrate our 60 years anniversary in 2016, our membership has
breached the 10,000 mark.

involvement in various committees and government relation
activities and also undertakes a range of activities which
positions CPA Australia as the premier global brand for strategy,
leadership and international business.
These include:
• outreach to institutions of higher learning
• facilitating a varied and highly relevant suite of professional
development paths and solutions; and

In the lead up to the implementation
of GST in Malaysia in April,
CPA Australia undertook several
initiatives including conducting
meetings with the Royal Malaysian

by Paul Drum, Head of Policy,
CPA Australia to help educate
members and the general Malaysian
public on what the tax changes
meant and to alleviate concerns for
many businesses. These articles saw
traction in leading mainstream print
and online media, The New Straits
Times and its sister publication,
Berita Harian.
A good number of Continuing
Professional Development (CPD)
workshops for the year also focused
on GST related topics including
several industry focused workshops

CPA AUSTRALIA SIGNS VARIATION AGREEMENT WITH TALENTCORP
Malaysian undergraduates
completing a degree locally are now
able to get an early start to attaining
their CPA Australia certification,
thanks to a variation agreement
between CPA Australia and Talent
Corporation Malaysia (TalentCorp).
Called the UNI-Qualified Fund,
this initiative is an extension of
the Get Qualified! Fund signed in
2013. While the Get Qualified! Fund
supports fresh graduate hires with
less than 12 months of working
experience, the UNI-Qualified Fund
supports Malaysian undergraduates
in Year 3 onwards who are currently
completing a degree in Malaysia.
This funding scheme allows eligible
students to take up to two segments
of the CPA Program before
graduating. Apart from gaining
knowledge from the CPA Program
segments, participating students
who have successfully completed
the Ethics and Governance exam
will have the opportunity to network
with CPA Australia’s Recognised
Employers.
The agreement was signed on
11 March by Jeff Hughes, Chief
Operating Officer – Member
Services, CPA Australia and Johan
Mahmood Merican, Chief Executive
Officer, TalentCorp.

CELEBRATING 60 YEARS IN MALAYSIA
It was in 1956 that the formal
start of CPA Australia’s presence
in, then Malaya, began with the
announcement of “the appointment
of a Committee of Advice and
a Local Representative at Kuala
Lumpur, along the lines of a similar
representation established in
Singapore and Hong Kong”. Since
then, CPA Australia has made
significant contributions to the
development of the Malaysian
accounting profession and continues
to influence major issues, policies
and regulations through strong
and enduring relationships with the
government of Malaysia, regulators,
academic institutions, employers,
collaborators and supporters.
2016 marks the 60th anniversary
of CPA Australia’s formal presence
in Malaysia and the theme chosen
for this momentous occasion,
‘Celebrating the past, influencing
the future’ is about building on
the achievements, celebrating
the contributions of important
stakeholders and members, and
increasing the relevance and profile
of the CPA Australia designation in
the market place.
To usher in the anniversary, a low-key
get-together with stakeholders was
organised in the CPA Australia Kuala
Lumpur office on 24 November.
A new landing page on the
CPA Australia website was launched
at the event to celebrate Malaysian
members and their contribution to
the community.
All members also received the sleek
commemorative 60-year calendar
to display with pride at work or
in the home. With opportunities
abound, the size and influence of
CPA Australia will continue to grow
through members as they establish
themselves as thought leaders
across a broad spectrum of the
corporate and business community.
