Butterflies?

Visual culture is broad, but put simply, the Palos Verdes
Art Center will be taking a multi-disciplinary approach that
explores the fluidity between these disciplines. Documenting
the present, looking toward the future, and evaluating the
past—all from our vantage point of a newly envisioned Palos
Verdes Art Center—where the distinctions between creative
practices have historically been celebrated. Walking through
exhibition galleries and studios you will encounter spaces
that educate, intrigue, and stimulate new strategies for creative exploration. Scott Canty’s Encore exhibit will assume
center stage in the Yassin and Norris galleries opening July 12.
Featuring Los Angeles-based artists who practice outside of
the boundaries of traditional painting, this exhibit will capture
our imaginations. Look for playful riffs on fashion design as
we pay tribute to the fashion icon, Lilly Pulitzer, in the Loving
Lilly. Opening August 9 and featuring a special Lilly Luncheon
on September 21, PVAC welcomes Dama Tequila as a sponsor
for both Pulitzer events. This Los Angeles-based small-batch
tequila company is run by women for women and is the perfect
compliment to Lilly Pulitzer. More than just the woman who
created the fashion empire that bears her name, Lilly Pulitzer
exemplifies an attitude, a casual sort of elegance, a style that
embodies gusto, generosity, and a neverending sense of fun.
In October, we take an exclusive look at man’s special
relationship to dogs in the I Love My Dog exhibition opening
October 11. In this exhibit we have paired historical works
with contemporary ones to suggest how our attitudes toward
dogs have changed, or not, over the past 200 years, and how
these changes are reflected in artistic activity. PVAC is pleased
to exhibit important paintings from the 19th and 20th century included in the collection of the American Kennel Club
Museum of the Dog. Organized by Barb McNabe, Director of
the American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog, these masterworks depict the important role the dog has played in
human history serving as hunter, guardian, companion, and
friend. Contemporary artists include William Wegman, Siri
Devi Khandavilli, and a series of design-built architectural
dog houses, including one designed by Frank Lloyd Wright,
and architects and student collectives from the region’s most
accomplished designers.
Whatever your vantage point, we hope Palos Verdes Art
Center adds another dimension to your world. PVAC: A center

This quote from Ms. Kezer resonates with me because of the
wonderful new possibilities of the Palos Verdes Art Center.
As we move back to our beautifully re-designed space, we will
have the opportunity to exercise our artistic ability to think
outside the box—looking to do business in a new way.
PVAC will continue offering outstanding exhibitions and
educational programming, plus add a few new events such as
art after work—a fun way to end your day—movie screenings,
and yappy hour (yep, bring your dog)!
One of the definitive things we were looking for on the
Executive Director Search Committee was someone who
possesses a depth of experience with many sizes and
functions of art centers/museums, and who could bring
“fresh eyes” to our operations. We found just such a person
in Joe Baker. Joe has great enthusiasm and excitement about
his ideas to raise awareness of the Art Center through new
interactive exhibitions involving the entire community, new
outreach programs to aid the underserved in our area, and
multiple partnerships/sponsorships that will bring muchdeserved publicity to show the value of the Art Center. We
look forward to introducing Joe Baker, PVAC’s new executive
director, as he unveils the new Palos Verdes Art Center’s
innovative schedule of events to the community.
So let’s buckle our seat belt, and ride the wave together
into the future. We hope that you all get involved, become
members, volunteer, or just enjoy the programs.

groovy 1970s pantsuits, this exhibition
and even a wild sequined-and-feathered costume that Lilly herself wore to
her son’s birthday party.
In the late 1950s, being young,
good-looking, and uninterested, Lilly
kept busy by selling oranges and
grapefruits from her husband’s groves.
By the day’s end, her clothing was
stained in pulp and juice. To help hide
the stains, Pulitzer created a colorful
shift dress. From there the Lilly dress
was born. The initial style of the Lilly
designs were simple shift dresses that
appealed to a wealthy client base that included Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, the
Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, and Whitneys. The dresses originally sold for $22 and
were the newest symbol of old money. Soon, the whimsical and whacky patterns
and kaleidoscopic colors made their way onto men’s clothes, children’s wear,
accessories, shoes, stationery, bedding, and bridal.

I Love My Dog
, Manhattan Beach.
I Love My Dog is borrowed from a song written by
Cat Stevens included in his debut album, Matthew
and Son, 1966. The lyrics best describe that special
relationship between man and dog. The domesticated
dog is so deeply intertwined in our lives it is only
natural that they have also found their way into our
arts practice. This exhibit examines a variety of ways
that artists have brought the depiction of the dog to
the art world. In I Love My Dog we have paired historical works with contemporary ones to suggest how our
attitudes towards dogs have changed, or not, over the
past 200 years, and how these changes are reflected
in artistic activity.

In recognition of their excellence in the visual arts, two youth artists, four high-school
graduates, one undergraduate collegian, two master-of-fine-arts students, and one working professional artist have received Beverly G. Alpay Memorial Education Fund Awards
from the Palos Verdes Art Center. The $18,000 they shared raises the 16-year grant program total to more than $170,000.
Members of the selection committee included: Dr. O. Allen Alpay, fund creator; Art
Center Chairman Loren DeRoy; Art Center President Nancy Cumming; Art Center Trustee
Maude Landon; Art Center faculty member Jan Napolitan, and PVAC Executive Director Joe
Baker.
The fund was created by the Art Center’s Board of Trustees and Dr. Alpay in memory of
his wife, Beverly Alpay. She was a long-time patron of the arts and served as president of
the Art Center’s Board of Directors and its executive director. Dr. Alpay continues to match
all donations to this educational endowment fund. To donate to this fund, please contact

Cubism
In this colorful project, students will learn
how African tribal sculptures and masks
inspired Pablo Picasso and significantly influenced the origination of Cubism.
Students will create a vibrant Cubist-style
face using line, shape, pattern, and color.

Students will learn about iconic architect Frank Lloyd Wright and his Prairie
Style architecture and art glass designs.
Using plastic, mod podge, tissue paper
and Sharpie®, children will create their
own faux-leaded-glass window, inspired

windows.

In this three-dimensional project, students
will be introduced to the rich history of
Egypt and its ancient writing system. They
will create their own version of hieroglyphs
on a ceramic tile by molding clay into
a low-relief sculpture and adding paint
to create the look of an ancient artifact.

Japonisme
Plum Tree
Students will learn how the opening of
Japanese trade to the West after 200
years of seclusion changed European
art in the mid-nineteenth century. With
this project, inspired by Japanese Master
Utagawa Hiroshige and European PostImpressionist Vincent Van Gogh, they will
understand how art connects and influences cultures by drawing a plum tree in
the Ukiyo-e style using oil pastels on black

Still Life
in Lines
In this fundamental drawing project, students will learn the history of pen and ink
drawing, which spans many cultures over
many centuries. Using a variety of techniques, they will create a still-life drawing,
adding shadows by varying line style and
using oil pastels to add interest with a
punch of color.

Palos Verdes Art Center offers standards-based art education for
more than 7,000 Peninsula students each year. Now it its 38th
year, Art At Your Fingertips docents teach elementary school
students through five creative projects. Projects are aligned with
California Visual and Performing Arts Standards, incorporating
artistic perception, creative expression, and historical, cultural
context, and aesthetic valuing.
Palos Verdes Art Center has a long history of providing superior art education,
offering a wide variety of art classes, workshops, and camps throughout the year.

Opening Night Gala
The Palos Verdes Art Center/Beverly G. Alpay Center for Arts Education
celebrated the Grand Re-Opening of the newly remodeled center on
Saturday, March 16, 2013. More than 270 donors and guests commenced the celebration with a preview of the Then and Now: One
Hundred Years of Impressionism Exhibition, presented by the California
Art Club est. 1909 in the remodeled, museum-like gallery space. Guests
enjoyed a delicious three-course meal catered by Terranea, and danced
to the sounds of a 12-piece band in the new events plaza. Special
guests in attendance included Los Angeles County Supervisor Don
Knabe and United States Representative Henry Waxman.
Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance Weekend
September 14–15, 2014 Trump National Golf Course
The 21st Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance will celebrate the “Age of Elegance” in
classic automobiles. The event’s featured car will be the 1933 Duesenberg SJ Torpedo
Sedan.
Peter Brock, designer of the Corvette Stingray, the Cobra Daytona Coupe, and
other iconic, high-performance automobiles, has been named the event’s grand
marshal. Brock will drive his Superformance Coupe, a modern version of the Daytona
Cobra Coupe, in the Conscours’ Pleasure Road Rallye on September 14, noon.
The event benefits the Palos Verdes Art Center’s educational and community
outreach programs and the Palos Verdes Rotary Foundation charities.

Redondo Beach Resident Wins Grand Prize
in PVAC’s 11th Annual Dream House Raffle
Mary Brydon, of Redondo Beach, had the winning ticket in the Palos Verdes Art
Center’s 11th Annual Palos Verdes Art Center Win Your Dream House Raffle! In the
10 Palos Verdes Art Center’s Win Your Dream House Raffles, the Palos Verdes Art
Center has given away more than $12 million in cash and prizes! All proceeds from
this charity raffle benefit the ongoing visual art education, exhibition and community
programs of the non-profit Palos Verdes Art Center, including Art At Your Fingertips,

Celebrate your child’s special day with a special PVAC party!
Each unique, themed party is designed
to entertain both boys and girls. Become pirates, princesses, artists or
fairies for a day during an Art Center
children’s birthday party. The basic
package includes age-appropriate art
projects; fantasy play in colorful costumes with an artist-painted mural to
set the stage; gallery tours; games;
balloons, and food, beverages and pa-
per goods. All is led by our in-house
artist and party coordinator. Meanwhile, parents and guests can enjoy
the art galleries.
The price is $475 for 10 children ($425
for Art Center members) and $25 for
