General Manager, Chief Opera ng Officer
Dear Members,
We have some news to share with you!
Construction:
Communication:
As we mentioned in the last newsletter we
have been working on a new club wide logo for apparel and printed materials. It is a big project and it
is still in the works.
Our construction projects have been going
very well so far this year. We have seen the completion of 4 newly renovated restrooms in the main club- Buying Wine:

you will take advantage of these services.
Additionally, we put in new drainage systems
in the greens on holes one and five designed to help
the greens perform better during the summer
months. Last to complete are replacing the roofs on
the golf pro shop and the golf course maintenance
building. Thanks so much for your patience during
our construction process.
Pool and Snack Bar Operations:
On Saturday, May 28th the club’s pool and
snack bar will reopen for 2016. They will operate
under the same hours as last year. Phil Herzog, Operations Manager and Nathan Teel, Pool Manager
will be your go to employees about the pool this summer.

St Innocent Cuvee Villages | Retail by the Bottle 22.99 | Glass 8.50
The 2013 Villages Cuvée Pinot noir returns to the "red wine with white meat
and fish" profile I intended for our milti-site Pinot noir. The lovely summer and early
harvest in 2013 provided fruit on the edge of ripeness. The cooler temperatures and rain
that that began in late September created more balanced and finesse-driven wines. The
percentage of fruit from Vitae Springs Vineyard decreased in 2013 because of crop failures due to frost and rain during bloom. Almost half of the Villages Cuvée came from
mature plantings at our estate, Zenith Vineyard. This is the first time Shea and Temperance Hill wines were included giving it a broader and more layered profile.
It has a nose with nuanced red cherry, berry and cola with, ground spices, menthol, anise, and fresh cut flower notes. It is layered in the mouth with tart cherry, cranberry, wild berry flavors with dark spices, earth, and hints of coffee, cedar, and sassafras.
The Villages Cuvée will benefit from being opened and decanted for 1-2 hours. Its balanced and layered flavor profile makes it a great match for a wide variety of fish, wild
bird, pork and other medium-bodied preparations. Bottled in September '14, it is approachable now and can be aged up to 5 years to gain complexity.
Nautilus Sauvignon Blanc | Retail by the Bottle 16.99 | Glass 8.00
The 2015 Nautilus Sauvignon Blanc displays intense aromas of passionfruit skin, elderflower, and hints of honeydew melon. The palate introduces a delightful lime/citrus
based mouth-watering intensity and finishes with a strong textural component.
Queens Peak Cabernet Sauvignon | Retail by the Bottle 16.99 | Glass 8.00
Our 2013 Queens Peak Cabernet Sauvignon opens with enticing aromas of toasted coconut, rich blackberry fruit and notes of dried dill and vanilla. Beautifully-crafted and
complex, showing flavors of dark chocolate covered cherries, fresh-brewed coffee and
coconut cream pie. The 100% American Oak driven wine gains depth and nuance alongside dusty tannins, vibrant dark berry fruit and a robust, long finish. Well-balanced and
graceful, the subtle notes of earth and herbs make this wine a perfect partner for foodpairing. Try with small dishes like porcini mushroom phyllo cups or crostini of countrystyle pâté with fig compote. For heartier fare, try pairing with dishes like espresso
braised beef with marble potatoes or roasted duck breast with a cherry reduction.
Domain Sorin Rose |Retail by the Bottle 14.59 | Glass 7.50
A blend of 40% Grenache, 40% Cinsault, 10% Syrah and 10%Mouvedre. A classic example of theProvence Rose, the wine is very dry but has flavors of cherry, watermelon,
andcranberry. It's great on its own on awarm day, but has enough depth to pair with
foods such as fish and vegetabledishes.

Calling all BST swimmers!
It’s almost time for the 2016 summer swim season to begin. Practice days are just around the corner, so please get the
registration, medical and volunteer forms filled out and turned in as soon as possible. The forms are attached at the bottom of this email. Please contact Brandon Landes [email protected] for any further information.
Coaches. We are very pleased to welcome back Patrick
Frankfort as head coach this summer. Emory McVeigh
and Brady Updike will also be back, and we’re excited to
welcome Holly Carrington for her first season as an
assistant coach.
Swimsuits. It’s time for a new swimsuit pattern! Every
other year, we switch up the team suit. For the 2016
summer swim season, the Blue Marlins will be sporting
the TYR Warp Speed bathing suit. Riverside Runners is
once again handling our swimsuits this year. **Please stop
by Riverside Runners on Rivermont Avenue between
Saturday, April 23 and Wednesday, May 11 to have your
swimmer(s) fitted. The deadline for ordering and
receiving the team price of $49.00 for female suits and
$32.00 for male suits is May 11, 2016. Suits ordered after
the deadline will not receive the special team pricing.
T-shirts and caps. We are working on a great new
t-shirt design for this summer. You can order yours with
registration, and it will be available at our first practice. I
am also working with Riverside Runners on a new cap
order for this summer. They will be available for
purchase before our first meet.
Registration Fees. $40 for the first swimmer in a family,
$35 for each additional swimmer in a family. All participants must pay this registration fee no matter how many
meets they will be able to attend during the summer. Again this summer, a swimmer must commit to
swim in at least one meet if they choose to participate in
swim team. (This does not include Junior Marlins)
Senior swimmers. (15-to 18-year olds) We need you and
your continued commitment! If you have been a BST
swimmer for 4 or more years, we want to recognize your
dedication with a discounted registration fee of only $15!

Junior Marlin Program
Not sure if your young swimmer is ready for swim team? Consider our Junior Marlin program. The Junior Marlin Program is intended to be a fun introduction to swimming. A child who is interested should be able to swim the entire length of the pool freestyle
without stopping. A Junior Marlin is registered with the LAL (full dues must be paid). Swim practice will focus on proper stroke
development. Our goal is to have the Junior Marlin swimmer participate in a meet when he/she is ready. Coaches may move a swimmer to regular swim team if they decide the swimmer is ready.
On Wednesday, June 15 and Thursday, June 16 from 4:30-5:00 pm, our coaches will evaluate potential Junior Marlins to make sure
each swimmer is ready to participate in the program. On Tuesday, June 21, Junior Marlins will begin a regular practice schedule of
Tuesday - Thursday afternoons from 4:30-5:00 pm.

John Comninaki
PGA Professional, Director of Golf
May and June are just the best months to be
out on the golf course and the golf schedule reflects
that fact. The next two months will be extremely
active and the golf shop staff will do its very best to
make sure everyone is informed of what is
happening on the golf course.
This summer will be the season of our Triple
Crown. But instead of The Derby, The Preakness
and The Belmont Stakes, it will be The Member
Guest, The Club Championship and The Member
Member. It will be a great deal of golf in a short
period of time; the Member Guest, June 3-4, the
Club Championship, June 24-25-26, and the
Member Member, July 8-9. Interest should be high,
the golf course will be great and everyone will be in
mid-season form. Get the details inside the “Club
Chronicle”.
Besides our “major” events we have Mens
Summer League beginning in May, a great spring
lunar golf event,” Nine in the Light, Nine at Night”
in May, and our always popular “Twilite Zone” par
3 golf tournament near the Summer Solstice in June.
All these are great events and fun to play.
Junior Golf and programs for new and
returning women golfers kick into a higher gear in
May and June. Team formation and practice will
begin in May for our PGA Junior League golf team
and David Phillips and Dylan Wright work to help
get our ladies into the swing of things with sessions
on Monday mornings and Thursday afternoons.
I would like to introduce Joseph Bailey as a
new addition to our staff. Joseph is from WinstonSalem, NC and a graduate of the Professional
Golfers Career College in Hilton Head, SC. Joseph
formerly worked at Country Club of Ashville and
most recently at Poplar Forest Golf Course. Joseph
has a proven record of improving junior golf
programs and we will be excited to see his skills
develop at Boonsboro Country Club.

Weeks of preparation and research heading in to The Bourbon and Branchwater
draft payed off as Billy McBratney of the Bourbons captained his team to the victory
over Norman Darden of the Branchwaters with a score of 8.5-3. Let this be a lesson
to all future captains, research before you draft!

Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 2, 3 & 4
Entry Deadline May 20th
One of the highlights of the season, the Member Guest is back with a great format and revised schedule and games for everyone! Once again we will play in a Nine Hole Round Robin Format, but this year the
event will kick off “Under the Lights” with the driving range lighted for our famous Break the Glass and
Flop Wall competitions. In addition we will give our young limber-backs a chance to show their strength
with a long drive contest that will conclude with Glow Balls off the first tee. The tournament champion will
again be crowned from a three-hole playoff including two wildcard teams, so the event is never over until the
last hole is played. The event will conclude with a seated banquet with the presentation of awards followed
by a dance with Lynchburg’s favorite party band, The Houseband. Invite a family member or friend to enjoy
this great weekend of golf, games, food and drink. Make memories this summer and play!
You should have already received an information sheet and application electronically. If not please
contact the golf shop and one will be provided for you, or go to the Boonsboro website and you can register
online. Your guest will be mailed an invitation and information sheet with all the details of the weekend.
After the deadline, if the field is less than 60 teams, teams may be added on an "as needed" basis to insure

Men’s Summer League
Men’s Summer League Matches will be played on the following Thursdays this spring:
START TIME: Modified shotgun start; Balls in the air
at 5:30pm.
LEAGUE FORMATION: We hope that sign up will
create a need for multiple leagues. Each League will
consist of a maximum of 10 two-man teams. This
would require that a team would play a total of 9
matches versus each team in your league. Based on
sign-up, if there are fewer than 10 teams in a league,
fewer matches will be played to complete league
play in the round robin format. Teams will be placed
into leagues based on the total handicap of each
team.
DATES: May 19th, 26th, June 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th,
July 7th, 14th
TEAM FORMATION: This is a member’s only league.
There will be an 18 stroke maximum on individual
handicaps a maximum differential of 10 strokes between team members. If a team has a larger difference, the higher handicap will be reduced so that the
spread equals 10. This rule prohibits a player from
receiving more than one stroke on a hole in a match.
TEES: Matches are to be played from the BLUE
TEES. Players over the age of 60 and a handicap of
18 or higher will play the GREEN TEES. All players age 65 and older will play from the GREEN
TEES. All players age 65 and over with a handicap
of 18 or higher will play the WHITE TEES. All
players 70 and older will play from the WHITE
TEES. Players must play from the same set of tees
for the entire season and playoffs. Handicap stroke
allocation will be adjusted for all play from the forward tee markers.
HANDICAPS: Revised handicaps on the 1st & 15th of
each month will be used in all league competition.
There will be a list of members requesting to be on
a “sub list” (who is not competing in your league)
provided to each player. Contact info – cell phone #
and email address of “subs” will be provided at the
beginning of each season.
Create a team of 3-4 players who can rotate in and
out of the matches throughout the season so you
don’t have to commit to playing in all rounds!
ENTRY FEE: $100.00 per team
FORMAT: Formats will change week to week; betterball of two, alternate shot, shamble, etc. A 10
point system will be used in league matches. Each
hole will be worth one point. A win earns one point,
a tie earns 1/2 a point, and a loss earns zero points.
In addition, a point will be awarded to the team that
wins the match. In the event of a tie, that point will
be split. Remember, this is modified match play
over the entire 9 holes. All matches will be played
entirely on either the front or back sides.

Spring Lunar Scramble
“9 in the Light, 9 at Night”
Friday, May 20th
This year’s format will be 9 holes playing during the day time and
9 holes played in the dark, or “9 in the light, 9 at night.” The first
shotgun will start at 5:30pm and finish by 7:30pm. We will then take a
break for drinks and dinner on the golf shop patio while waiting for
the sun to set at 8:30pm for the second shotgun at night.
The golf course will be transformed into a glow course with LED
lights and glow sticks lining the fairways, tee boxes, and greens. This
year the field will be split into two flights. Flight 1 will play the front
9 in the light and back 9 at night while flight 2 will play the back 9 in
the light and the front 9 at night. Also new for this year will be brighter golf balls and a pace of play at night of 2 hour and 30 minutes to
get you off the course no later than 11pm. The field will be limited to
96 players. Make your own teams or sign up individually and let the
golf shop pair you.
The entry fee is $75.00 per player and includes cart, dinner, and lunar golf balls.

PGA Junior League
Junior Lesson Packages for 2016
Go to pgajlg.com to see just how exci8ng this will be!
US Kids Top 50 Golf Instructor John Comninaki,
PGA and Assistant Golf Professionals David Phillips and Dylan Wright will be offering lesson packages for the 2016 golf season. Five lessons will be
offered for the price of four and can be split among
multiple players to create a clinic environment. (All
one hour sessions)
Junior Boy and Girl Golfers between the
Ages of 9 and 13!
Do you want to have some fun! Do you enjoy competition in a relaxed non-threatening environment? Would you like to be part of a team?
Then come be a part of something new and exciting, The PGA Junior Golf League! The Boonsboro
Country Club team is looking for interested juniors
to help create Lynchburg’s first PGA Junior
League. NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY!
This league is a developmental league for juniors
new to the game or experienced juniors who will
play for a chance to make the all-star team and represent Lynchburg in the play-offs. Play will be in 9
hole matches, broken into 3 hole segments. The
match is a two person scramble format, ie., each
player hits and the team plays from the better of the
two shots. Players can substitute into a match after
each 3 hole segment so all players on a team will
participate. Practices will begin mid-May and
matches will begin after the end of the school year.
Upon the conclusion of league play an All-Star team
will be selected from the area teams with a chance
to play for the state, regional and national championship!
The cost for each junior to participate on the
BCC team is $125 that includes: all practice sessions, matches, team shirts, sleeves of golf balls, bag
tag and a club team web page for results etc…
Please contact your PGA Professionals, John
Comninaki, David Phillips , Dylan Wright, or Joseph Bailey in the Golf Shop for any questions or to
register.

Behind the Greens
Steve Vessells
Greens Superintendent
We really had a great first quarter for this year.
A few snows and some cold temperatures, a little rain
and a lot of unseasonably warm temperatures. I can’t
remember a March as warm as this one. The
temperatures enabled us to work on and complete nearly
all of the projects and routine maintenance that we had
hoped to.
Our Greens drainage project went very
smoothly. XGD Systems brought a crew of six men and
they were able to complete the installation of sub-surface
drainage on our 1st and 5th green, on time and on budget.
This company does excellent work and most golfers
won’t even be able to tell the work has been done by the
time they read this.
Our all-weather tee line was installed in February and
March as well. A competent contractor and a high
quality supplier came together to give us what we were
looking for and more. The TurfHound Company’s Tee
line has been very well received and we have enjoyed lots
of positive feedback. This added amenity should provide
a durable tee line to practice from as well as enable us to
provide a much better natural turf teeing ground during
the season.
Our upgraded tree maintenance program has
also enjoyed a great first quarter. Bartlett Tree Experts
have worked on over twelve key trees on the golf course
and club house grounds. The work that has been done
this year is work that could be done without the leaves
on the trees. As the spring and summer move on,
additional trees will be worked on.
In the clubhouse front lawn, the large white oak
and the three smaller Shumard oaks were pruned to
30
Boonsboro Country Club
promote safety and proper structure. Bartlett also used
what is called an air spade to perform root invigoration
on those four trees. This process loosens up the soil
around the base of a tree and removes excess soil and
mulch from the root flare. We discovered a lot of roots in
that area around the Shumard Oaks, that left alone,
would have strangled the tree. These roots were
removed. Next we incorporated compost into the
disturbed area and mulched lightly. This should help
there tree for a long time.
Along with our stepped up tree program, we are
also using Bartlett to help us with our boxwoods around
the club. It’s hard to believe that we have over 175
boxwoods on our property. Many different English,
American and Korean boxwoods have been planted here
over the years. We are stepping up our maintenance
program to include fertilization and pest management.
Having been overlooked for some time, it will
take a season or two to see improvements in the health
and vitality of these plants. We are confident that we are
on the right path to improving the long-term health and
value of Boonsboro’s boxwoods.
Our golf schedule really picks up in May and
June. Please be sure to check with the pro-shop for the
many member events that we have going on. The Fox
Puss, the Men’s Member-Guest and Club Championship
and Senior Inter-club are on the Men’s side. The BWGA
4-Ball Invitational, One-day Member-Guest
Tournaments for 18 and 9 holes, along with the Member
-Member make up the Women’s side.
