Tin Can Tourists complete a trip to Rainy River
Acting Mayor Ashley Stamler passed out bags of souviners
to the visitors. In the background is a 1948 H.B. McGiness
trailer.
The driver of this vehicle travels with an Alien. On one trip
everything that could go wrong did so the group decided the
only explanation was that they were being followed by

worked because the bad luck ceased immediately.

The Black Fly Caravan arrived on Saturday to culminate
its journey down Yonge Street,
Toronto to Rainy River. This
enthusiastic group of travellers
is part of an organization called
Tin Can Tourists. It began in
1919 to unite fraternally all
auto campers who enjoy having
fun with others. The particular
group they are interested in
joining has planned a trip
somewhere and off they go, exploring new sights and enjoying evenings of camaraderie.
A group of us arrived at 5:00
to welcome them with Rainy
River Town Councillor Ashley
Stamler who was formally attired in her role as Acting
Mayor.
Everyone laughed and chatted

Soon after the departure of the Acting Mayor, Deputy Fire
Chief Ashley Stamler arrived with a fire pit for them to

mayoral situation was addressed as well but Stamler

looking out at the river, he understood completely.
We could smell the aroma of

was time for us to bid farewell.
One of the travellers asked if
they could build a bonfire with

talks to emcee Jason Gauthier about his first time at the
FFCBC. He teamed up with local pro, Bryan Gustafson and
brought in a 20-pound bag of bass on day one. They stayed
in top spot for two days but a 17-pound bag of bass on day
three wasn’t quite enough to pull out the win. They ended
up with a second place finish.

Whether you were an angler
or a spectator at this year’s
Fort Frances Canadian Bass
Championship, there was no
shortage of bass and no shortage of fun. The tent was
packed on Thursday night for
Quest for the Best and for the
final day of weigh-ins on Saturday afternoon when Jeff
Gustafson and his partner John
Peterson were crowned champions of the Fort Frances
Canadian Bass Championship
for the second year in a row
with a 3-day combined weight
of 57.18 pounds. Along with
the glory of being named
champions, they also took
home a cheque for twenty
thousand dollars.
After the prize presentations,
it was time to party and Pop
Rocks, an entertaining band
from Minneapolis did not disappoint once they started to
play for the huge crowd. Unfortunately, due to technical
difficulties, they were late in
starting but kept a crowd dancing until two thirty in the
morning.

“Be all you can be!” Master Bombardier Lynn Danielson from
Kenora was at the FFCBC to promote the Northwestern Ontario Army Reserve. There are currently about 45 members
from the Region involved in the reserve unit. Those who join go
through basic training and are on reserve for the regular force.
“One member has been to Afghanistan”, noted Danielson.
Volunteer, Shelly Gustafson was all smiles on day one as she updated the leaderboard that saw her son Bryan and his teammate take over top spot.

Volunteering was alive and
well on the Railroad Daze
weekend. Hats off to the
cooks, potato washers, servers,
clean up crews and the colour
parties. Kudos to a special
crew who worked on cleaning
up and replanting the Legion
garden at the Town Hall. A
word of praise to Janet Hughes
and Jeannette Wolanicki for
their contribution to the back
breaking work on the garden.
There will be no General
Meetings for the months of
July and August.
It looks like we will have a
new garbage bin by the end of
the week due to the efforts of
Glenda and Gary. Thank you!

was happy with this year’s
event. “Everything went well.
The angler portion went extremely well”, he said, adding
that there are definitely some
areas that need some work and
will require more involvement
by volunteers to sit on the Executive committee. “We had
more volunteers overall this
year than the last four years
which was great”, noted Watson.
Cheers to the volunteers who
made the 2014 FFCBC a success. After twenty years, the
main event of the summer is
alive and well. The more people that get involved, the bigger
and better our local bass tournament will be. Let’s all support the FFCBC and make it
the premiere bass fishing tournament in the Region for the
next twenty years!!!

Moos by Kim Jo Bliss
Well last week was ruined by
the crazy amounts of rain that
fell across the district late Monday night. We had 2.5 inches
which left windrows of hay in
standing water and my west
end friends seen 5 inches of
rain and fields that looked like
lakes. The water is not going
away too quickly either since
the ground is just about as fed
up with the rain as we are. I
did get to bale up most of my
water logged hay but had to
leave many rows in the field
since it was still in water. I finally started to cut again last
night in hopes we may see a
decent week. Of course I have
a busy week ahead of me with
our Open House / Soil & Crop
Tour and plenty of guests coming and going around the Station. This is the time of the
year that I feel very overwhelmed – haying, EARS,
Emo Fair and Sales Barn jobs.
Our Emo Beef Club held their
Annual Fun Day over the
weekend. Big thanks to Penny
and Tony Flatt for hosting us
once again. Tony and Penny
went above the call of duty and
built us a nice new corral so
that the members could prac-
tice with their animals. I was
so proud of all our members –
their animals were all so well
behaved and we had a wonderful practice day! Thanks to the
parents / grand-parents for getting the kids and animals there
and helping with our club duties.
Unfortunately while my
brother was out investigating
the upcoming deer season --(yes, he is preparing early) he
noticed a cow that wasn’t keeping up with the herd. I gathered up my medicine, rope
halter, fly spray and headed to
catch her. I was thinking she
had a sore foot but it was a
swollen hock. I caught her and
needled her in the bush but
chances of catching her again
and doing that will likely be
slim. They never seem to make
it home in these cases – she is
able to walk but just not keeping up well. I may have to end
up walking her home if it looks
like she is going to need more
medicine.
I finally had the time to get
the area set up for our Fair cattle and managed to sort them
out of the rest of the herd. Now
to find the time to get them tied
up and calmed down. Maddie
and Marlee are anxious to get
working on them but they will
need a few days of “rodeo-ing”
before the girls can manhandle
them. The girls are certainly
becoming more and more helpful with things around the farm
– it is a nice treat and they feel
quite important when they
tackle a few chores.
Usually when the girls and I
are in the truck we listen to
music and sing loudly. Their
favorite song is “Roxie Roller”
mainly because that’s our dog’s
name. Marlee told me while
we were singing that she is
pretty sure that song was written by someone that reads the
paper where I write about the
them and Roxee! I said well
“maybe!”
Don’t forget I am looking to
see everyone this Thursday –
Soil & Crop Tour will meet at
the Emo Agricultural Research
Station at 9:00 a.m. and then
make our way to Stratton to
begin the tour. Thursday night
at 7:00 p.m. – is our Open
House and I am hoping to see
everyone out! If you would
like to see the complete schedule please get in touch with me.
John Wort Hannam at Cornell Farms
Singer-songwriter, John Wort
Hannam will be performing at
Cornell Farms on August 6th at
7:30 p.m. In 12 years of being
a working musician, John has
released 5 albums, captured a
Juno nomination for Best Traditional/Roots album, and received a Canadian Folk Music
Award for Album of the Year.
While teaching language arts
to Kainai/Blackfoot children,
John developed a narrative
story-telling style which he
joins with a great voice and guitar playing and a wry wit. According to Borealis Music,
“John Wort Hannam in concert
is a powerful singer with
poignant lyrics to match”.
John comes from a long line
of people who make a living
Lakers

using their hands – dockworker,
farmer, master carpenter. It’s
been said that he is one of the
new torch-bearers of a vast
song writing tradition in the
styles of John Prine, Louden
Wainwright III, and Steve
Earle, but proudly Canadian.
“John Wort Hannam looks like
Billy Bob Thornton, hails from
rural Alberta, and does rootscountry like no one’s business”
– Spill Magazine.
Kim Cornell is extremely
pleased to have such a great
performer in the barn. “We saw
John perform a few years ago at
a house concert. If you liked
Del Barber, you’re sure to
enjoy John Wort Hannam.
We’ve had him on our radar for
a few years and it’s great that
we’re finally getting him in the
Barn.”
John’s music has taken him
from his native Alberta to the
Isle of Jersey, to appearances in
festivals from Trafalgar Square
to the Smithsonian. Following
his show at Cornell Farms,
John will be heading to the Live
from the Rock Folk Festival in
Red Rock.
Opening for Hannam is well
known local performer, Brittany Hayes.
Tickets are $15 in advance
and $18 at the door. They are
available from the Fort Frances
Public Library, the Clover Valley Farmers Market, Main
Street Market in Devlin and
Cornell Farms.

Scholler and Wilson clean sweep, Davis claims Modified Feature
By: Anthony Leek
It was another Saturday night
of iffy weather at the Emo
Speedway, but luckily only a
small shower around 5pm hit
the track with the majority of it
happening further east towards
Fort Frances. Another amazing
crowd attended with two heats
in the WISSOTA classes and
nine cars in the Emo Street
Stocks for AMSOIL Dirt Track
Racing Series action.
The WISSOTA Midwest
Modifieds heat one was on the
track first for the night. Chuck
Lambert started on the pole
with Don Scholler on the outside. Scholler pulled out front
early and did not look back as
Lambert was unable to mount a
challenge. John Hettinga finished third. In the second heat,
Brady Caul started third and
claimed the win, while Cody
Ossachuk and Christopher Leek
rounded out the top three.
The Emo Street Stocks had an
exciting heat race as Tylar Wilson, Kendal Gamsby and Jeff
Wickstrom made their way
through the field to the top three
spots. However, it was Wilson
that would take the win from
the sixth position. Gamsby went
from seventh to second, while
Wickstrom raced his way from
ninth to third.
The WISSOTA Modifieds
split into two heats with Gavin
Paull claiming the win, Jamie
Davis finishing third, and Steve
Nordin finishing fourth. In the
second heat, Gary Wilson took
the early lead, but contact with
Phil Gavel led to Wilson going
sideways on the backstretch.
Ron Korpi was able to avoid it
and Lindsay Bourre slid sideways while trying to avoid the
car but ended up impacting the
car. On the restart, Jeff Davis
pulled away from Korpi for the
win.
The WISSOTA Midwest
Modifieds feature had Scholler
and Hettinga on the front row.
Scholler moved out in front but
this time he was not going to be
alone. Brady Caul was moving
quickly from the sixth position.
Passing Ossachuk, then Kenny
Perry, Caul was in third as the
caution came out for Brody
Strachan spinning in turn four.
On the ensuing restart, Caul
made the pass for second. His
eyes were then set on Scholler.
The rest of the field were battling for third spot, but Hettinga
went too high and fell off the
track bringing out the caution.
On the next restart, Caul went
to the inside on Scholler making
the race a side by side affair for
several laps. Caul had the lead
by just a bit for next few laps,
but Scholler was able to regain
as they swapped lanes. The battled continued beside one another with Scholler still on the
inside. Caul took the lead on the
outside as they went halfway
through the race. They jostled
some more until one more caution as Terry Martin ended up
over the embankment. With just
five laps to go, Scholler was
able to keep Caul at bay to take
the clean sweep of the night and
his second win in a row after
winning at Hibbing Speedway
last weekend. Lambert finished
third, while Christopher Leek
finished fourth and Hettinga
fifth.
The Emo Street Stocks were
up next. Devin Brown and
Wickstrom were on the front
row. As the green flag waved,
Wickstrom took the lead. Wilson moved into second place
while Gamsby passed for third.
Wilson,
Wickstrom
and
Gamsby made it almost three
wide in the early going, but the
caution came out having to
restack the field. Wilson led
them to the green. Gamsby
moved into second on the out-
side and passed the leader for
the top spot. Wilson was not
willing to give up as he held
steadfast on the middle of the
track starting to reel in Gamsby
just like he did last week. Wilson pulled up beside Gamsby
on the inside making it another
side by side race for several
laps. Back and forth the two
were inseparable. Eventually,
Wilson was able to make the
pass and moved up a lane to
start to pull away from Gamsby.
Another caution came out to
reset the field, but Wilson was
able to take the win in the end
as Gamsby finished second,
with Brown, Shine and Godin
finishing out the top five.
In the WISSOTA Modifieds,
Nordin led at the start, but
Jamie Davis was hot on his tail.
Nordin ran the outside as Davis
ducked to the inside. After several laps of side by side action,
Davis was able to find the line
to pull ahead. Meanwhile, Paull
was moving his way past Jeff
Davis for third spot. The two
battled for a bit, with the two of
them switching lanes a few
times. Paull was then able to get
the better of him and moved
into third. He then moved right
behind Nordin but ran out of
laps, finishing third. Davis took
his third win at Emo Speedway
in 2014 with Nordin second.
Jeff Davis and Tyler Brown finished up the top five.
Racing resumes this Saturday
Night August 2, with hot laps at
7:00pm and racing at 7:30pm.
