Rangers
Need help?? Ask for a ranger!
Rangers are participants who volunteer a portion of their time in service of the safety and wellbeing of the Burning Man community. Rangers act as non-confrontational community mediators,
providers of reliable information, facilitators of public safety, and navigators of the edge of
chaos. Day or night, pairs of Rangers can be found walking the site, engaging with the
community, enjoying the art, and always ready to help sort things out.

The Ten Principles of Burning Man
Burning Man Founder Larry Harvey wrote the Ten Principles in 2004 as guidelines for the
newly-formed Regionals Network. They were crafted not as a dictate of how people should be
and act, but as a reflection of the community's ethos and culture as it had organically developed
since the event's inception. Because Otherworld is an official regional Burning Man event, the
event must abide by the Ten Principles. The Ten Principles are as follows (in no particular
order):
●
●
●
●
●
●
●
●

Decommodification
Radical Self Expression
Radical Self-Reliance
Immediacy
Civic Responsibility
Gifting
Radical Inclusion
Leaving No Trace
Communal Effort
Participation
Radical Self-reliance
Burning Man encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on his or her inner
resources.
The what to bring portion of this survival guide includes a few things about attitude. Besides
your physical needs, which you obviously want to take care of, take care of your mental and
emotional needs. Burner events are great fun, and sometimes they can be hard. Be prepared to
step up to the challenges. Plan as if you are the only one who prepared for this journey.
Immediacy
Immediate experience is, in many ways, the most important touchstone of value in our culture.
We seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the
reality of those around us, participation in society, and contact with a natural world exceeding
human powers. No idea can substitute for this experience,
Be here, now. Put down the phone, stop worrying about tomorrow, forget about yesterday, and
be here. Otherwise you'll miss it. You really don't want to miss it.
4
Decommodification
In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that
are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to
protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for
participatory experience.
Remember, this isn't a music festival, you can't buy a tee shirt, and we don't have a sponsor, no
one is making any money.
Radical Self-expression
Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than the
individual or a collaborating group can determine its content. It is offered as a gift to others. In
this spirit, the giver should respect the rights and liberties of the recipient.
Now's your chance to discover more about yourself . Respect and enjoy
when the people around you are more themselves. You'll find sides of each
other that you never knew were there.
Civic Responsibility
We value civil society. Community members who organize events should assume responsibility
for public welfare and endeavour to communicate civic responsibilities to participants. They
must also assume responsibility for conducting events in accordance with local, state and
federal laws.
We really, really prefer Radical Self-expression and Radical inclusion, however, it's here that we
have to remind you to keep it legal, keep it fun for everyone, and keep it safe. (safety third).
Gifting
Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional.
Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.
For many people who are active in the burner community year round, the giving never stops.
From artists to event producers to DJ's, they gift their time and skills so we can have events that
are fun and amazing. For people who love what they do and do what they love, the gift is it's
own reward. Many others bring gifts to events, from homemade items to gifts of food and
drink. They are not exchanged, but given unconditionally, and often cherished unconditionally.
When, after building a man, burning it and dancing your ass off around it, you find Guerill'd
Cheese at 2 am, you cherish that sandwich.
5
Radical Inclusion
Anyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites
exist for participation in our community.
Essentially it's the idea that everyone is equally welcome at Burn events, no matter how weird. It
doesn't mean you have to invite everyone or anyone, or that absolutely any behaviour is
acceptable. But unless your behaviour is more criminal or outrageously antisocial than most,
you are welcome. I express it as, Welcome home. All of you, old friends and new, welcome
home.
Communal Effort
Our community values creative cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce, promote
and protect social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of communication that
support such interaction.
It takes a village to raise a man, burn him to the ground and rake his ashes away like he'd never
been there. You'll know you are part of the community when you find yourself pitching in, when
the people who do things get to know your talents, your favourite drink, and what you eat for
breakfast.
Participation
Our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative
change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply
personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone
is invited to play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart.
It's easy to be a tourist, grab a couple costumes to blend in, pack in some drinks and a bit of
food. Sit back and watch the freaks and beautiful people do their thing. No one will really notice
if you are out for the spectacle of it all. But you won't be part of it, and it won't be part of you.
You can't be a burner unless you burn, and you won't feel the fire inside by treating it like
television.

Art Installations
(in alphabetical order)
Brood ~ The Empress
Brood is a black widow spider, made out of recycled metal. The installation is designed to be a
chill-out space. At night when brood is on fire, beautiful flame art will be displayed underneath

marvel at the infinite flame patterns.
Come join us at night, warm up and share your stories!
The Forest Hams ~ By Whiskey and Whores, Bonkers Bistro and OOPS!
A series of 4 handmade hammocks made their otherworld debut in 2013. These hammocks
were sewn with inspiration from festival culture and sport fabulous and funky fabrics such as fun
furs, velvet, satin, bright and psychadelic patterns- all for your sensory enjoyment and relaxation
needs. The hammocks are mosty made to be double-wide (""if the Ham is rockin, dont come
knockin?""). This year’s expansion includes several more hammocks, new hammock features
such as drink holders! and better lighting.
Gnome Forest ~ Between Vandago and Valhalla
The gnomes return again this year with an expanded mushroom lamp placement to illuminate
more lanes.
'The Man' The Effigy Project: 'HOUSEHOLD TOTEM' 1990 - 2014 ~ By Main Stage
Look up and you will see A figure, atop a chair, atop a table, atop a… Totem, ladder, reaching
over, A canopy, covering, inviting, A starlight sojourn at midnight. Take it in while you can,
Without the soft, misleading whisperings, Of invisibly weighted words. For in their simple
attempt to define and be kind, No matter how well intended their soliloquy may be, They are still
the shackles of a freedom from, Finding one's own inner voice, one's own inner arising dialogue
into The personal experience of what is to be… 'The Man' The Effigy Project: 'HOUSEHOLD
TOTEM' 1990 - 2014
Notty Neon Saddle Swing ~ PerVy & Perky's Puppet Palace and Lounge
Come sore the skies on this 30 ft neon swing. Kick your heels up and yell Yeehaa! Ride at your
own risk. Cowboy hats, topless girls and sparkle boots encouraged. Ride anytime until the lights
go out at night!
7
Toll Booth ~ CocoaDome
The Toll Booth has been making people laugh and giggle for over 3 years. From the MidAtlantic Regional event Playa Del Fuego, twice to Burning Man and at FIGMENT Philadelphia
last year. The toll booth is open both day and evening.
What is the Toll Booth?
Citizens are told that opening the crossbar is a 3-Step process.
Step 1: Citizens are asked (but not required) to place a small item in the ‘coin basket’ to activate
the gate arm.
Step 2. Citizens are interviewed about how they participate at the event.
Step 3. The Toll Collector then asks or assigns them about a talent or skill they can show right
now.
Once these three steps are completed, the cow bell rings and squeaky toy squeaks! They
receive an "I Am an Artist!" button and sticker, then the gate lifts for them to pass. Items
collected from the ‘coin basket’ are later redistributed to citizens.
What’s the point of all this Toll Booth stuff?
To praise citizens for participating, to create an opportunity for citizens to show off and share
their talents, to make ‘event virgins’ aware that they are artists TOO, and gosh darn just
encourage silliness and lots of laughter.
Umbraphone 3.0 ~ Temple
The Umbraphone is an interactive installation, a musical instrument that is played with light and
shadow. During the day, create sounds with your shadow. During the nighttime, use your
flashlight.

Ever been to a bar where you just wanted to tell the bartender to jump in front of a bus?
Ever been a bartender and wanted to tell the customer that they are always wrong?
Ever wanted to make the worst drink imaginable and serve it to your least favorite customer and
they have to drink it because you're going to pour it down their throat or make them cry for a
week sobbing for mommy?
VANdango doesn't have time for your hippie bullshit, your positivity, and especially your fucking
chakra. Leave your enlightenment and teeth at the door for the shit show that is Vandango.
The Vardo
Come and gather around our Vardo and share food and stories
Whiskey & Whores
"I never met as many sinners as I did in the whorehouse." - Mark Twain. They all have to end up
somewhere; might as well be in the Underworld. Whiskey & Whores: the only thing looser than
the woman is the slots; a place where you might get hit by a shot of Bulleit. Confessionals in the
back, fine whiskey tastings in the front, and dancing girls on the stage. We have it all.
Xanadu Pleasure Dome
Xanadu is a consent-oriented sex-positive 70's disco space. Activities and events hosted in the
Xanadu space begin with a fully non-sexual and family oriented children's disco dance and
family dance event on our opening night. This is to ensure that everyone in our community has
an opportunity to enjoy what we have created. Following this, for the remainder of the
Otherworld event, Xanadu will host events that are more mature in nature. These include
workshops during the day with a relationship and sexuality focus, and nighttime activities that
range from cuddle times to more explicitly sexual events. At all times, we place high priority on
consent and the safety and wellbeing of our participants. We are inclusive of all genders and
sexual orientations.
Please note, all events hosted by Xanadu are clearly labeled to indicate age appropriateness
and degree of sexual activity permitted. Our Xanadu atrium is explicitly non-sexual and
Otherworld attendees are invited to drop by to find out what we are all about, check out our
schedule of events, and review our list of rules. We are happy to answer any questions you may
have. During our red light hours, we will have a greeter and consent fairies present at all times
to ensure the safety and well-being of all attendees.
We are very excited about the beautiful space we are creating and hope to see everyone there
at some point in the weekend.

DJs
(in alphabetical order)
I knew there would be music and hot sweltering dance parties in the Underworld!
Catch the following DJs spinning daytime at the Beach Stage and at night on the Main Stage.
Amanda Phabulous
Fresh from the BPM festival in Playa Del Carmen Mexico Amanda Phabulous is a classic Funk
and Disco Dj. Born and raised in London Ontario she currently resides in Victoria BC and
started to DJ at festivals and private parties because she was trance and techno'ed out. She
thought it would be nice to hear and see more glitter on the dance floor. Her passion for
electronic music started while doing promotions for clubs and after hours venues in Toronto and
Montreal where Jungle, House and Drum and Bass were the staple sounds. Amanda Phabulous
transitioned from promoting to performing with her first festival show Otherworld, 4 years ago
and is super thrilled to funk up the daytime dancey dance so everyone can get down in their
sparkle pants.
Audiofox
Audiofox has been passionate about electronic music for over a decade. Originally drawn to
House music, her ability to express herself musically came through her transition into Deep
House, Tech House and, sometimes!, Minimal. She’s had the opportunity to play at various
nightclubs in Victoria, regional Burningman events as well as at Burningman 2013 (which was
EPIC!). Her solid track selection and sexy deep beats will keep you groovin’ till the daylight ;)
Dave Dirk (Intimate Productions, The Eatery, Sin City) [house, electro, techno]:
http://soundcloud.com/dave-dirk
Dave Dirk has been DJing around Vancouver and the island for about 5 years now. Formerly a
regular sound provider for The Eatery in Vancouver and one of the DeBasement DJs for
Vancouver's Sin City fetish parties, Dave is happy to now have Victoria as his home. Some fun
Facts about Dave Dirk: - Dave and all his friends were called the Geek Squad in high school by
the in crowd. Then he became the guy that Geek squad called to fix _their_ computers. -Dave is
the only person in this city who can get away with wearing lingerie and a fedora at the same
time. -Dave says he “likes to overthrow small governments in his spare time.” Translated, that
means he “likes to point out how horrible your grammar is on a dozen local internet
messageboards in his spare time.”
Debo
After nearly a decade of spinning, Debo is definitely no stranger behind the one's and two's.
After what looked like a very promising start to long Dj career tragedy struck and his entire vinyl
collection was stolen one night never to be seen again. Down but not out he slowly rebuilt his
collection. Now after a 3 year hiatus and a re-energized sense of inspiration. Debo has returned
to the decks to bring his one of a kind style of deep rolling bass lines and energetic funk to
destroy a dance floor near you.

Desunos
Not to be confused with breakfast, DJ Desunos has been Throwin' Down Dynamic Dance Music
since the Summer of 2006, DJ Desunos (a.k.a. Laughlin Meagher) grew his roots in Dub,
Reggae, and World Ethno Electronic music, and has also been known to spin Progressive and
Tech House. Desunos is a multi genre DJ, has a deep love for sophisticated Dubstep, Glitch
Hop, and all things Interchill. Through his work as a Lead Singer / Songwriter, DJing has
become a natural evolution for this Dynamic Live Performer. With 17 years on stage Laughlin
knows how to rock an audience and is well known for his harmonica solos, his skill on the
melodica and his live MCing and vocals. A skilled multi-instrumentalist and dedicated student of
music, you never know what he will bring to his show. Desunos has ventured into the world of
electronic music Production / Engineering, and plans to release an album by the spring of 2012.
Crossing many genres, desunos has shared the stage with local and international acts including
Adham Shaikh, Kaminanada, David Starfire, Timothy Wisdom, Gaudi, Liquid Stranger, Delhi to
Dublin and many more. “Music is the language we all understand without having to speak…”
Dodd
The existence of Dodd has long been questioned by those who've not been on his dancefloor -but those who've been there are fast and thorough believers. From his humble beginnings as a
dancefloor observer Dodd carefully catalogued the sounds and reactions of the people in order
to pinpoint the perfect palette of progressive sounds: blending trancey, glitchy, dubby and techy
tidbits into memorable dancefloor journeys that transcend sonic expectations. With these
dancefloor commandments Dodd has been rocking crowds consistently in Victoria, as well as
becoming a mainstay of the Entheos Conference and Festival. Whether you're a believer or not,
with the speakers as his chorus, you will be moved by the voice of Dodd...
Magdalaina: DJ
Is everybody in !?
Matterson (Hit Me Productions, Westcoast Funktions) (House, Tech)
After being inspired by the countless local events featuring local and international DJ's,
Matterson decided to take up the craft himself. Starting with the electro craze of the late '00 era,
he first played parties for Sonica Late Nights and Westcoast Funktions where he learned much
about the craft. As time moved forward, he started contributing to regional burning man events,
growing into a more mature house sound in the process. Reaching into Funky, Deep and Tech
areas of House showcases his ever increasing development.
Mike Gano
Having been relocated from San Francisco and fresh off a year-long world tour, Gano has a
suitcase packed full of Tropical House to share! Gano is now one of the fastest growing names
in the BC dance music scene with a blend of Techy Rhythms and Bouncing Bass with just
enough of that Signature Circus Sound to keep the Dance Floor Bumpin’! Not that his name is
getting longer, but with a flurry of big performances, has come a surge of loyal Booty Shakers
and Disciples to his sound. And he’s no stranger to the studio: Gano with Kevin Legere (as
21
Double Dog Dare) have written some Killa Dance Floor Fillas. While Ganos' sound itself draws
on a decade of experience, exploring underground scenes across North America, in just the
past year his name has appeared alongside such international talent as Deep Dish, Gaudi,
Terry Francis, and Kenny Glasgow. Also, Gano now joins some of our most passionate,
dedicated local artists as the newest member of Sunset Collaborations. Catch him dancing
behind the decks and Laying the Wobblin' Bass on Thick at a dance floor near you!
Nick Karma
Okay, Okay. Quick History backstory. Drums as a child, and through his 20's. Turntables, loads
of vinyl, cdj's, lights, cameras, and action. Nick has been busy with all that noise for two and half
decades. Growing up on classic rock, grunge, 90's electronic, hip hop, and everything in
between rounded out his senses for music, and what appealed to him. A taste ever evolving
leaving him playing House of all kinds for over thirteen years now with friends all over Canada,
and larger acts from abroad including the likes of Mark Farina, Tipper, Dizzy, Dirt Crew, Detroit
Swindle, and Noah Pred. Technical skills, selection, and audio quality always changing with the
times, or even slightly ahead. True underground representation always in mind!
Skylo
Skylo's love of mixing started over a decade before she was ripping it up behind the decks at
shows and clubs across BC & Alberta. A love of dancing and a passion for underground, Funky,
Soul-Inspired House planted a seed that quickly grew into an uncontrollable urge to get her
hands on the music, literally. Hush was her second home, hosting shows with many of the DJs
that would influence her style. She's played alongside local favourites such as Lyssa, Carson,
Mike Gano, Naomi Nice, Angry Samoan, Marlee, and Nick Karma, opened for Kenzie Clarke,
Greenskeepers, and Myagi, and counts herself blessed to have opened for her biggest
influence and very favourite DJ and Producer Sonny Fodera. Skylo has also performed at
festivals throughout BC - her favourite (if she had to choose) was her tag set with Lyssa at the
Victoria Electronic Music Festival in 2010. You'll never find anonymous dance beats at one of
her shows, as she stays true to the Eclectic and Energetic mix of Beats, Song, and Rhythm that
have always made her move on the dance floor and influenced her DJ and mixing style. Always
Funky and Sexy, sometimes Dirty, go to one of her gigs and you're guaranteed Sexy, Funky
Beats that'll have you Shakin' that Ass all night long!
Sylvain
From Shambhala to Soundwave then Burning Man, Sylvain's been a familiar face around the
B.C. clubs and festivals for years. But in 2010, he made the fateful move from the dance floor to
the decks and hasn't looked back. His sets Overflow with High Energy, Sonic Waves of
Pleasure. And he's never failed to whip the dance floor into a frenzy!
