Commander‘s Message
Cdr Raymond Ellison, JN
Well it is Christmas time. That means it is time for our members to collect food for the
Leesburg Food Bank, Gifts for the Abused and Abandoned Children in Leesburg, and
Santa for Seniors gifts. Please take these items to Steve's Christmas party. They will be
separated by groups and given out to the three different charities. Steve has until
December 10th to deliver these items
Our Annual Meeting has past. We have elected a new Commander, A Squadron
Education Officer, a Treasurer, an Executive Committee, Nominating Committee, Rules
Committee and an Audit Committee. We are looking for volunteers for the positions of
Executive Officer, Secretary and Administrative Officer. Filling those positions will
make squadron operations a lot easier. Please consider volunteering or at least helping in
the planning.
We are still going to need members to help on our March 1, 2, and 3 2013 spring
conference in Lake Mary. The more people we have the easier it will be on all of us. It is
a lot of fun and we get a chance to meet USPS members from other squadrons.
I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Also, be
looking for invitations to the next year change of watch, 13 January 2013 at Vics Embers.
Cdr. Raymond Ellison, JN.

Lt/C Stephen Kupferberg, P
Squadron Executive Officer (SXO)
Our elections are over and we have a new slate of officers for the coming year. We are
short three bridge officers, which presents the incoming officers with a management and
organizational dilemma.
I would like each of you to consider the possibility of serving on an activities committee in
order to plan the when and where activities of squadron activities. The “how” will be
executed by the Bridge.
I have heard some people say they have made lots of friends in the Squadron and have been
involved in the planning of the March Conference. We have all worked hard to build this
organization—some of you have been at it much longer than other members. We need to
remember that we are here for Fraternity, Education and Civic Service.
My goal is to grow and strengthen the Squadron along each arm of our triangle. I can only
do it with your help. Those coming onto the bridge are experienced boaters, educators, and
are committed to the ideals of the USPS.
Fair Winds and a Calm Sea to each of you in the coming year.

Squadron Education Officer (SEO)
This is my last article as your Squadron Education Officer. It has been a pleasure serving
you and an experience I will long remember. I would especially like to thank all the
instructors for their hard work. Their involvement and support has made our classes and
seminars this year fun, interesting and very worth -while.
If I don’t see you before the end of the year, have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy
New Year.
Lt/C Jerie Tallman, P
Squadron Secretary
This is my last article as your Squadron Secretary. If I had not been doing this for 2 years
and 4 months, I would have continued. I explained this to Steve and he agreed that I
needed a break.
Harris Chain Sail & Power Squadron members can purchase items at the Ship's Store. The
following items are currently in stock:
Golf-style shirts made of 100% polyester are available. These shirts feature a 'moisture
management wicking' fabric. Embroidered on the left front is the full-color HCS&PS logo.
Wear this up-dated stunning Tomato Puree color shirt and show your dedication to
boating education and safety. Cost of each shirt is $32.07; Sizes Large, X-Large and XXLarge are available.
A pennant-style, double-stitched, quality nylon burgee in full HCS&PS logo colors is meant
to fly proudly from your boat. It is colorful, visible from a distance and keeps the boat
looking its best when attending squadron outings. Burgees are $38.70 each.
Attach a squadron decal to your car window or the hull of your boat to show your
membership colors. Displaying the decal will also help to promote the squadron and inform
the public of the excellent boating educational classes that are available to everyone. Full
color decals are $3.00 each.

Treasurers Report
With the sale of the squadron's boat, we have set up a dedicated savings account with the
proceeds. This fund is set aside for special educational spending.
The books are up to date, and in balance. Because we have a new Bridge, another audit
was required and the books found to be in good order. With the use of restaurants and
free venues as meeting locations, the squadron has saved $50 a month from expenses. With
the upcoming District conference, the bridge is keeping a close eye on expenses.

Our Work Is Not Done !
IT all started out as a routine day, let’s launch the boat and have some fun. The Harris Chain was
going to have a lunchtime cruise and get together in honor of Veterans Day. We loaded up the
boat and headed to the launch ramp. After arriving at the ramp, our normal “preflight” shake
down was worked off. Anyone that has ever trailered a boat knows the routine. Check the
bearings that they are cool, disconnect the electric before immersing the trailer, remove the safety
chain from the bow, loosen the winch, remove the rear tie downs, remove the outdrive support and
insert the plug. Then load the miscellaneous from the tow vehicle- Life Jackets, cooler, hand held
back up radio and the such- and move them into the boat. Only after all that, then pull up to the
ramp and with an operator on board, immerse the trailer and set the boat free, once started. This
routine was shattered by what appeared to be a rude boater who came into the no wake area at a
hurried pace, jumped from his boat, and ran up the ramp. He jumped into his big, burley diesel
and fired it up. He then wheeled the rig around everyone and backed it down the ramp. In the
meantime, we had backed our boat into the bay next to him. At this point we sensed an urgency,
or possibly an emergency of some kind. After him backing his boat away and causing a ruckus in
the loading area, he finally admitted that he was sinking. His motor was cutting out and he was
basically out of control. He was trying to power his boat towards his trailer without any sort of
success. The motor kept cutting out. The operator could not keep the motor running. I yelled
towards six bass fishermen, who were out of the water, for some assistance. Four of the six moved
towards the water. One actually grabbed one of the boat’s line (a really old ski rope, of
polypropylene) and tried to haul the boat towards the trailer. Finally the motor turned over and the
boat was unceremoniously bounced on the trailer. The owner hopped out of the boat and started to
yank the boat to apparent safety, while the others yelled just pull it out. No one was thinking of
the accumulated weight of the water that was taken on. Neither boat nor trailer is designed to
carry the weight of a hull full of water. Instead I coached him out, as the water poured from the
bilge pump outlet. I asked him what had happened. Only then, he admitted that he forgot the plug.
Once the boat cleared the water’s edge and the bilge drained, we found the plug resting safely on
the transom.
After conversing with the operator, I found out that he had the boat for about a year, bought
it used, had never owned a boat before this, and had no boating education. He asked me what he
owed me for saving his boat. I handed him a card and told him to put those bucks towards OUR
education offerings, and join the Power Squadron. He would benefit though our 100 years of
experience of safe boating, and fraternity. We invited him to our outing, I think that he was too
shaken to do much of anything else.
This whole experience just reinforces that our “Job” is not done,
Everyone just needs to keep trying to get the word out.

We completed 129 Vessel Safety Examinations this Year. Of the 129 Inspections 115 boats
were awarded decals. If you would like to undergo the training, contact any of the
Examiners and they will help you (they are all certified instructors). Passing the Vessel
Safety Examiner adds another Elective course to your punch list.
