working in your community.
In 2010, our staff volunteered more than
1,000 hours, and as an organization,
the Credit Union donated more than
$160,000 to local charities.
On the cover:
She may have a southern accent, but Pagelyn Howren
has lived in Iowa long enough to be very fluent in two
things: all things financial and all things Hawkeye.
Pagelyn started at the UICCU in 2004 as a financial
service representative and recently became branch
manager at the University of Iowa Memorial Union
location. Working on campus, she says, gives her
opportunities a traditional management job wouldn’t.
Pagelyn volunteers her time at dozens of University
events and programs, including the annual Dance
Marathon, which raises millions of dollars for the UI
Children’s Hospital. She also presents numerous financial
literacy seminars each month to University employees
and students and coordinates the UICCU’s presence at
everything from student orientations and Greek Life
events to the UI President’s Block Party. For these and
many other reasons, Pagelyn and the UICCU received
the University’s prestigious Hawkeye Award in 2010 for
outstanding community partnership.

T
he University of Iowa Community
Credit Union is proud to be an integral
part of the communities in which our
growing number of members live and work. In
2010 our reach, both in terms of the members
we served and the lives we touched, was greater
than ever.
We welcomed more than 13,000 new
members and expanded our service locations to
ten. We opened an 11th on February 28, 2011.
We also achieved tremendous financial growth:
loans grew by more than 17.5% and deposits
grew even more. Best of all, we were ranked in
the top ten of more than 7,500 credit unions
nationwide in effectively returning profits to
our members.
We also introduced a host of new services
and products including a Free-in-10 mortgage
program that gives members a quick 10-year
payoff schedule, a home banking platform with
new money management features, and mobile
and text banking for members on the go.
Innovations are important, but our highest
priority remains our commitment to provide
a high level of member service and to make a
difference in our communities. In 2010, our
staff volunteered more than 1,000 hours and
as an organization gave more than $160,000
to local charities. As you read through this
annual report, you’ll meet a handful of staff
members who, through their time and talents,
are making a difference in our communities each
and every day. They, along with our many other
staff members, remain true to our principles of
service, hospitality, community support, and
partnerships.
Thank you for being a valued member of our
Credit Union family and for helping to make a
difference in our community.

Legendary Bluesman. Entertainer.
Longtime UICCU Member.
Meet Kevin “B.F.” Burt.
2
University of Iowa Community Credit Union 2010 Annual Report
M
idwest bluesman Kevin “B.F.” Burt,
well known for his eclectic style
of soulful blues, has entertained
audiences for 20 years. He performs more than
320 shows a year, some solo and some with his
band, The Instigators. He also composes music,
played a lead role in an off Broadway play in New
York and Washington D.C., wrote and composed a
soundtrack, and appeared in an independent film.
And since 1992, through most of his career as a
musician, he’s also been a member of the UICCU.
“The Credit Union has played a vital role in my
business. It’s not a traditional business on any level.
I don’t have a paycheck each Friday, but that’s not
important to the UICCU. They have supported
my dreams and even helped sponsor a summer
concert series I put together five years ago to help
my family and me afford a down payment on a
house.” Community involvement, he says, is what
sets UICCU apart. “It’s one thing to exist in a
community, but another to be a part of it to make
it more enjoyable for everyone.” That’s something
that resonates with Burt who one day dreams of
offering blues education in area schools for kids of
all ages. “There is a reason kids drop out,” he says.
“There has to be different things that keep their
attention. For me, football and music are what
kept me in school. I want to give other kids the
opportunity to find their gifts.” To hear Kevin sing
about what makes UICCU part of the community,

Taste of Market Facilitator. Big Brother Big Sisters Academic Mentor.
Backbone of the UICCU Community Involvement Team.
Meet Jacki Kuepker.
B
efore Jacki Kuepker joined the UICCU
11 years ago she didn’t know much about
the Credit Union’s philosophy, but she
quickly embraced it. “I like the idea of working for
an organization where people are here to help people,
and we don’t put profits first.” In fact, Jacki liked the
notion so much that she has become the backbone of
the UICCU’s Community Involvement Team, a group
that is instrumental in offering volunteer and financial
support to organizations in Johnson and Linn
Counties. “I’ve been on the committee for more than
five years because it’s important to me to be active
in the community,” she says. Through the UICCU,
Jacki became involved in the Big Brothers Big Sisters
Academic Mentoring program. She has worked
one-on-one with a number of students, forging one
connection that lasted more than five years. She’s also
helped prepare and serve food at Taste of Market, an
annual event in downtown Iowa City that features
food and music. The truth is that there is rarely a
month when she is not volunteering. In the spring,
she registers race times at the Iowa City schools’ Track
and Field Days. In the winter, she’s a Santa’s Helper for
Four Oaks clients. The rest of the year, she volunteers
with the ICARE Pancake Breakfast and the Crisis
Center’s Eastern Iowa Food Drive. “I have a lot of
blessings in my life and enjoy being able to give back,”
she says. “I’m grateful I work at a place that shares that
same belief and values.”

Account Executive. Reach for Your Potential Board Member.
Irving Weber Days Volunteer. Elected Trustee.
Resident Santa.
Meet Eldon Snyder.
F
or 22 years, Eldon Snyder has offered
kind words and sound financial advice
to thousands of members, first as a
UICCU branch manager and most recently as
an account executive. “I really enjoy having that
personal interaction with individual members
where I see them at the Credit Union and in the
community,” he says. What many members may
not know is just how involved Eldon is in Johnson
County. Born and raised in Iowa City, for eight
years he has served on the board of Reach for Your
Potential, a non-profit organization that provides
housing and care for individuals with disabilities.
Eldon is also a longstanding member of the Iowa
City Chamber of Commerce and the Noon Lions
Club, has worked on the United Way Campaign
Committee, raised money for Big Brothers Big
Sisters, and supported the annual Irving Weber
Days. Eldon has also played the role of Santa Claus
at the UICCU’s annual children’s holiday party. The
fact that Eldon dons a Santa suit and beard may
be news to some, but others are more surprised by
his newest endeavor as a trustee for the East Lucas
Township in Johnson County. “I have always lived
in Johnson County and my roots are here in Iowa
City. This is my home, and I love it here. I get a lot
of enjoyment and satisfaction out of helping people
in my community achieve their goals.”

Branch Manager. Coach. Treasurer of the Riverside Youth Baseball
Association and Ducks Unlimited. King of the UICCU
Adopt-A-Highway Program.
Meet John Strabala.
8
University of Iowa Community Credit Union 2010 Annual Report
M
any UICCU members know John
Strabala as longtime branch manager
at the Iowa Avenue location in Iowa
City. But he also holds another noteworthy position
within the Credit Union; he has long been known as
the UICCU’s reigning king of the Adopt-a-Highway
Program. John started at the UICCU in 1984 and
almost from day one, took over responsibility for the
volunteer effort. Twice a year, John loads his pickup
truck with UICCU staff and heads out to a two-mile
stretch along Highway 6 near Procter and Gamble
in Iowa City. “I have always loved the outdoors,
hunting and fishing, so picking up trash and caring
for the environment goes hand in hand with that.
If you let the place get messy and trashy it ruins it
for everyone. Some of us bring our own families
and over the years my kids have come to help.” The
UICCU cleanup team picks up a minimum of 20
bags of trash each outing. Sometimes, they even
find a few surprises. “We have found spare tires,
large palettes of wood, mattresses, and even sinks!
Sometimes you just shake your head and wonder
where it came from.” In 2008, John and the UICCU
received the Governor’s Volunteer Award for their
Adopt-A-Highway work. John is also a soccer,
softball and baseball coach for his three children and
has been involved in everything from the Iowa City
Schools’ Track and Field Days to local boards. “Over
my 27 years it’s been great to see all of our employees
get involved in more things and find more and more
opportunities to make a difference at every level.”

From the Chairperson
Laura Reed
2010 was a great year for introducing
new, innovative ways for members to manage
their finances.
The University of Iowa Community
Credit Union performed
exceptionally well against the
backdrop of a struggling economy.
Despite the national challenges,
UICCU continued to grow and
improve. While the numbers and
ratios found in this Annual Report
reflect a healthy credit union, it’s
equally important to reflect on the
things that do not necessarily show
up on charts or graphs; like the
deepening relationship we have with
the communities we serve.
I’d like to recognize the efforts of
our staff in serving the membership,
giving back to the community, and
constantly looking for ways to make
a strong cooperative even better.
A commitment
to the membership
As a financial cooperative, our first
priority is serving our members. In
the credit union industry, there is a
popular ratio known as Return of
the Member. This ratio, calculated
by independent research firm
Callahan and Associates, rates credit
unions by how much they return
their profits back to the members
in the form of better rates and
lower fees. Out of over 7,500 credit
unions nationwide, the UICCU
was ranked 9th. In addition to this
great honor, Iowa City Press-Citizen
readers also voted UICCU the “Best
Financial Institution” with which to
do business.
10
A commitment
to community
For UICCU staff, the dedication to
serve extends beyond the workplace
and often beyond the hours of a
typical work day. I’m proud to report
that UICCU staff volunteered over
1,000 hours and the cooperative
gave $160,000 in support to local
charities in 2010. While we recognize
a few of them in this Annual
Report, I encourage you to visit the
Community Involvement page of our
website to learn more about how your
cooperative gives back.
A commitment
to improve
2010 was a great year for
introducing new, innovative ways for
members to manage their finances.
Our new home banking platform
not only gives members the ability
to track all of their accounts in one
place, but also provides tools to
help them manage their budget and
set financial goals. Our “e-Alerts”
help members avoid overdraft fees
by warning them via e-mail or
text message when their checking
balances are low. And Mobile
Banking gives members 24/7 access
to their accounts from their smart
phones. All of these services were
introduced in 2010, and all are free.
I would like to thank my colleagues
who serve as our volunteer Board
of Directors and the UICCU staff
for the work they do to serve our
members and our communities.
Above all, I thank you, our members,
for your continued support of the
University of Iowa Community
Credit Union. We deeply appreciate
your confidence and support as we
look to a bright future.
Laura Reed
Chairperson, Board of Directors
University of Iowa Community Credit Union 2010 Annual Report
From the Credit Committee
Tom Lepic
While we will continue to be competitive
with our rates, our success will depend on our
ability to be proactive.
Loan demand continued to be very
strong throughout your Credit Union
in 2010. Loans increased $152 million
over the past year as we ended the year
at just under $956 million in loan
balances, a strong 19% increase. In
fact, with the exception of home equity
loans, every loan type experienced
double digit increases in growth. Given
the continued dynamic economic
climate, we are proud to have produced
these results for the membership. It
was indeed a special year in terms of
providing convenient and inexpensive
credit to our members as noted in the
following highlights.
Home loan originations, including
both in-house and secondary market
loans, came in at $417 million for the
year, the best year on record for the
Credit Union. Over 2,600 members
took advantage of low interest rates
and our in-house balances grew some
18%. Home equity loans continued
to be a very popular option for our
membership, as loan balances grew 9%
and ended the year at $151 million.
The commercial portfolio experienced
very strong loan growth last year as
well; balances grew just over 19% and
ended the year at $118 million. In
order to comply with the cap imposed
by the NCUA, commercial loan
participations sold continued and with
commercial loan participations now of
just under $17 million.
Automotive lending continued to be
a pleasant surprise for the cooperative,
both in terms of over-the-counter
(OTC) and indirect lending. Staff
granted almost 3,000 OTC car loans
totaling $46 million and our OTC
car loan balances ended the year at
$83 million, a 40% increase in loan
balances. Staff granted almost 4,500
indirect car loans totaling $76 million
and our indirect car loan balances
ended the year at $136 million,
representing a 26% increase in loan
balances for the year.
Personal unsecured loan balances had
a good rebound in 2010. Balances
increased $7 million, up 26%, and
finished the year at $34 million. Credit
card balances finished 2010 at just
under $41 million, a healthy increase
of 11%. This increase is due to our
competitive fixed interest rates, more
focus on these products by staff, and
competitive MasterCard and Visa
platinum card products.
A challenging economy caused asset
quality to be a focus during 2010 and
loan quality will likely remain an area
of focus for UICCU in the foreseeable
future. Loan quality improved during
2010; our delinquency ratio finished
the year at 0.78%, which was 52 basis
points lower than in 2009 (1.30%).
Net loans charged off increased 14%
this year and finished the year at
0.58%, one basis point lower than in
2009. Given the percentage increase in
loans, this outcome is not surprising.
The UICCU has added resources,
both internal and external, to our
collection efforts with successful results.
Underwriting policies continue to be
reviewed on a periodic and regular
basis, and we do not anticipate any
significant changes in those policies in
the near term.
University of Iowa Community Credit Union 2010 Annual Report
The Credit Union expects 2011 to be
much the same as 2010 in terms of
lending. High unemployment, tight
credit markets, and inflationary fears
still exist. The year ahead presents
great opportunity for the UICCU to
find existing loans held elsewhere and
refinance those loans to save money for
our members. While the Credit Union
will continue to be competitive with
our rates, our success will depend on
our ability to be proactive.
Your Credit Committee is dedicated
to protecting the safety and soundness
of your Credit Union and looks
forward to the continued opportunity
to care for the borrowing needs of our
members by making money available
and conveniently accessible, offering
excellent loan products and services,
and providing exemplary service.
Respectfully submitted,
Tom Lepic, Chair
Credit Committee

From the Audit Committee

Your credit union conducts frequent and
extensive internal audits of all areas of the
Credit Union’s compliance.
As authorized by the Credit Union’s
by-laws, the Audit Committee
retained the accounting firm of
McGladrey & Pullen, LLP to
provide external auditing services
during the past year. Their
comprehensive audit centered on the
Credit Union’s financial statements,
internal controls and accounting
procedures. As in years past,
McGladrey & Pullen’s audit report
indicated that the credit union’s
financial statements are presented in
accordance with generally accepted
accounting principles.
Your Credit Union also conducts
frequent and extensive internal
audits of all areas of the UICCU’s
compliance with its internal
policies and procedures, as well as
adherence to state and federal rules
and regulations. The internal audit
function also reviews employee
accounts and dormant (or inactive)
member accounts, two areas for
potential fraud or malfeasance.
The Audit Committee wishes
to commend the internal audit
department for their continued
good work on behalf of the Credit
Union’s membership.
12
During November 2010, the Credit
Union received its examination by
the Iowa Credit Union Division
and the NCUA, as of September
30, 2010. This exam focuses on
financial risk areas and your Board
of Directors’ and Credit Union
management’s oversight and
operational management of these
areas. The exam focuses on the
UICCU’s lending and investment
policies, its asset — liability
management policies, and its
ongoing performance as measured
by several key financial ratios such
as earnings and capital adequacy.
Your Credit Union received a
favorable examination report from
its state regulators.
In closing, the Audit Committee
wishes to commend the UICCU
staff for their dedication and
commitment to the Credit Union
and its membership.
Respectfully submitted,
Mark Moser, Chair
Audit Committee
All Credit Union accounts are
insured up to $250,000 by the
National Credit Union Share
Insurance Fund (NCUSIF),
which continues to be one of the
strongest federal deposit funds
in existence today. In addition to
the deposit insurance, the Credit
Union also maintains a multimillion dollar faithful performance
bond, which provides coverage for
our professional staff and volunteer
directors.
University of Iowa Community Credit Union 2010 Annual Report
From the President
Jeffrey A. Disterhoft
There can be no greater purpose in life or in business
than to help our neighbors, and the credit union
takes tremendous pride in fulfilling that purpose.
“People must come before profits...”
At first glance, Hawkeye fans may
not recognize the last recorded
words of Nile Kinnick, the legendary
Iowa football player who won the
Heisman trophy in 1939 and died
just four years later serving his
country in World War II. But for the
employees of the University of Iowa
Community Credit Union, those
words serve as a constant reminder
of our mission, and our very purpose
of existence as a member-owned
cooperative.
The year 2010 was yet another
period of special accomplishments
for your Credit Union, as we were
recognized as one of the best financial
institutions in the area. We enjoyed
tremendous growth in our loans,
deposits, assets and earnings. We
strengthened our relationship with
the University of Iowa, and built
relationships in new markets as well.
We took steps to better serve you
through mergers, new offices, and the
development of a Member Support
Center to centralize our operations.
We converted to an enhanced
home banking platform, and began
preparation for a new core processing
system as well. While these are
all wonderful successes, we find
ourselves coming back to those words
written on an aircraft carrier almost
Emblazoned on the front wall in the
room where our staff meetings have
taken place virtually every month
for the past 15 years, those words are
well known to every employee of the
Credit Union. Penned while serving
off the coast of Venezuela, Mr.
Kinnick captured the essence of the
core values that credit unions across
the country attempt to emulate every
day. There can be no greater purpose
in life or in business than to help
our neighbors, and the Credit Union
takes tremendous pride in fulfilling
that purpose.
We price these products and services
in a way that provides the most value
to you as member-owners of the
cooperative. From our perspective,
we have an inherent responsibility to
provide the very best value to each of
you — not only in terms of pricing,
but also service. It would seem that
our efforts have been successful, as
your cooperative was once again
recognized as one of the top ten
credit unions in the nation (out of
over 7,500 institutions) in returning
its earnings to the membership in the
form of great rates and lower fees.
You see, in some ways your Credit
Union doesn’t just make loans —
we make loans that provide our
neighbors means of convenient
transportation, or affordable housing
for their families. In the same
light, we do not simply accept our
members’ deposits — we help our
neighbors save for a child’s education,
or perhaps their own retirement.
While I’m sure you appreciate that
sort of recognition, I think most
of us would agree that recognizing
“People must come before profits”
is perhaps the greatest testament
we could possibly provide, not only
to Mr. Kinnick, but to the 80,000
members we serve each and every
day. I pass along my sincere thanks
to each of you for your continued
patronage of the UICCU, and to
our Board and staff alike for their
tireless efforts, dedication, and
ongoing commitment. Collectively,
your efforts have clearly resulted in
a tradition of excellence within the
cooperative that we hope would have
indeed made Mr. Kinnick proud.
