Haysville Middle School Receives Gold Award from KAMSA
Haysville Middle School recently received the Gold Award from
the Kansas Association of Middle
School Administrators (KAMSA)
being recognized as a high performing middle school.
HMS Principal Dr. Mike Maurer
accepted the award at a ceremony
held in Junction City.
“Our school was recognized
because of growth in our math assessment scores. Our teachers and
students put forth a tremendous effort and we increased math scores 11
percent from 2007 to 2008,” said Dr.
Maurer. “One group of our reading
assessment scores jumped 18.2 percent in just one year.”
Reynolds Retires with 46 Years at USD 261
From Ron Reynolds: I am retiring
from education after 53 years, the last 46
being in the Haysville School District. I
spent three years at Campus High School
teaching Math and 43 years at Haysville
Junior High, now Haysville Middle
School, as a counselor.
I enjoyed the eight years I taught high
school math but after being drafted and
spending two years as a personnel psychologist, I began more education in
counseling. My life changed when I was
given the opportunity to start the Guidance Program at Haysville Junior High.
The key to a student’s education is a
good school with good people who enjoy working with young people. The best
advice I can give students is always do
your best. If you do your best you could not do better anyway, so why worry.
Technology has not only changed students but all people. It can be a tool to
help all of us if we use it correctly.
I have been fortunate and blessed to work with many fine professionals.
It has been a privilege to work all these years with a super group of coworkers. They have been like a second family. I will miss them.
My “honey do” list is long but it includes traveling with my wife, Karen,
watching my grandson, Blake, play sports and attending WSU basketball
and baseball games.
The Haysville School District has been good to me but the best is the
educations given to my son, David, and daughter, Kayla.
Dr. Maurer & the KAMSA Award

Members Attend Workshop
Newly elected USD 261 board members, Emily Davis and Regina Schutt, recently attended the Kansas Association of School Boards’ (KASB) New Board Member Workshop.
“These workshops were designed to assure each
Kansas board member is ready and willing to accept the
challenges facing Kansas schools,” said John Koepke,
KASB executive director. “At the end of the day the new
board members have gathered a broad range of knowledge that will assist them during their time on the school
board.”
New board member Emily Davis is looking forward
to starting her term.
KAKE StormCall
“I am excited to serve the community of Haysville
as a new member of the Board of Education. I look forward to getting to know the students, staff, parents and
citizens as I work with the Board to better serve the people of Haysville,” said Davis. “The KASB New Board
Member workshop was very helpful and encouraging.
I am grateful for the opportunity I had to attend and am
looking forward to starting my term in July.”
Jay Prater, KAKE Managing Meteorologist, and Bob
Lane, President of McDonald’s Mid-Kansas Advertising Co-op, presented Mike Mitchener with a certificate for a subscription to KAKE’s StormCall services for the 375 elementary school in the area. Nelson
was selected as the site of the news conference
because of the damage the school sustained in the
May 3, 1999 tornado. Additional information about
StormCall is available at www.kake.com/stormcall.
Regina Schutt was appointed to the USD 261 Board
of Education in August 2008 to fill the unexpired term
of Mike Alexander. She was elected by the voters to the
BOE in April 2009.
CHS Alums Win Gold Medals
“It was great to attend the new board member workshop. The fundamentals of board membership and legal
aspects were very informative,” said Schutt. “We heard
about keeping a “balcony view” of the district. This is
crucial in recognizing our role on the school board and
the responsibilities that we are to carry out.”
USD 261 Board of Education President Susan Walston also attended the meeting.
“One of the benefits of belonging to the KASB is the
training. I found attending the workshop with our new
board members was beneficial in keeping me apprised of
new changes in state and federal laws. I feel it is important for our current and new board members to continue
to monitor changes in our state and national educational
systems,” said Walston.
New USD 261 board members will also receive local
training about the operations of the District from Superintendent Dr. John Burke and other administrative staff.
Five Campus High School alumni will be in Washington, D.C. in June to accept Congressional Award
Gold Medals.
Those receiving awards will be: Scott Shipman,
Class of 2008; Dakota Hauserman, Class of 2008; Emilee Whitesell, Class of 2008; Annie Burke, Class of 2007
and Denver Shipman, Class of 2007.
The Congressional Award Gold Medal is the highest
award that Congress bestows upon America’s youth. The
Congressional Award program is to recognize the value
of serving the community and strengthening their own
citizenship to America’s youth.

Bob Curless Served District for 61 Years
Galen Davis, Executive Director of Operations Maintenance contributed the information below in a
salute to long-time employee Bob Curless.
Freddy Robinson and I have just been visiting with
Maintenance employee Bob Curless about his possible
retirement from USD 261. Bob confirmed that this will
be his last year helping our school district on a regular
part-time basis. Bob did mention he would be available
for occasional part-time work when he is needed.
Mr. Curless started his 61 year career with the
Haysville Schools by serving as one of three school bus
drivers for the original Hemphill Elementary School in
the Fall of 1947. Bob was paid $60 a month as a school
bus driver. In the Fall of 1948 Bob was asked if he would
also help with maintenance jobs at the school for $1.50
an hour when he was needed “to fix a window, a door or
a heater.” Of course, he brought his own hand tools to do
the maintenance work. Mr. Curless has also served as a
substitute custodian whenever he was needed.
Mr. Curless has helped our school district immensely
to grow and improve throughout his 61 year dedicated
career with the Haysville Schools. He has been an integral part of the growth and maintenance of our school
district as it has grown from the one Hemphill Elementary School to our current 11 schools and total of 13 facilities. Without a doubt, Bob has made an important impact
on everyone of our facilities. Bob has always worked
hard for our schools. In addition to his dedicated work
to ensure the cleanliness and safety of our schools, Bob
is also noted for the occasional prank played on his coworkers. All you have to do is ask Bob or one of his coworkers about his pranks and then sit back and get ready
to have a great laugh.
Bob and his family are tremendously dedicated to
education. His wife became a Haysville teacher in 1948
making $221 a month. Their daughter is a retired teacher and administrator and their son is currently a teacher.
Mr. Curless and his family have certainly provided a
great legacy to Kansas education and especially education in the Haysville Public Schools.
Bob assured us that he will be staying busy as he continues to farm his 700 acres and “do all of the things
around home” that need to be done.
Mr. Bob Curless has the greatest respect from his
Maintenance co-workers, our Principals, school staff,
Central Administration and Board of Education. While
there is no doubt that we will miss seeing Bob’s smile
and willing dedication to do whatever needs to be done
Bob Curless
for the improvement of the Haysville Schools on a daily
basis, we are counting on being able to call on him to
help us figure out some of our many maintenance projects.
We thank him from the bottom of our hearts for a job
and career very, very well done!

What Are Your Plans?
Just for fun an e-mail was sent to ask
USD 261 employees about their summer
plans. Here are some of the responses.
Marcy Aycock (Prairie):
My summer plans include
traveling to North and
South Dakota, playing with
my kids a lot and riding my
motorcycle every chance I
get!!!
Jo Ann Shipman (Prairie): I will be going to Washington D.C. in June to watch my son, niece and cousin
receive a Gold medal for a Congressional Award. (See
story on page 2).
Joelle Good (Parents as Teachers): My son, Trenton, was promoted from a cub scout to a boy scout this
year. Now, that he is a boy scout I will be attending Boy
Scout camp with him in Texas. I think this could be an
adventure!! After we return from camp, I will fly to my
sister’s in San Diego for a week of Girl Time.
Sharon Stenholm (Rex): After attending the wedding of one of our sons in Lima, Peru, we plan on visiting them at their home in Bermuda as soon as school is
out. After surviving South Korea and Peru within the last
10 months, we’re looking forward to not having to deal
with a language barrier.
Renae Spangler and Jan Tamson (Campus): We
will be attending the AAFCS (American Association of
Family and Consumer Sciences) Conference in Knoxville, TN from June 22-28. It was a fantastic conference
last year and should be outstanding this year -- the 100th
anniversary of Family & Consumer Science, formerly
Home Economics!
Shenae Stein (Ruth Clark): I am going to be working a summer camp for teens for the entire month of
June.
Dallas Love (Campus): I was recently elected the
VFW Senior Vice Commander for the 5th District of
Kansas. I will take office at the conclusion of the State
Convention in Topeka 12 - 14 June. I plan on attending the state convention and then spending time with my
mother in Belleville Kansas. (and of course----summer
courses).
PAGE 4
Linda Long (The Learning Center): We are taking
a family trip to San Diego and Los Angeles to go to San
Diego Zoo, Disneyland and Hollywood (Rodeo Drive of
course!!) This trip is to celebrate all the graduations in
our family -- Emily from CHS, Jeff from Baker with his
MAED and Whitney from 8th grade at HMS.
Kim Hall (Nelson): I will be teaching classes at The
Learning Center and privately in addition to working on
a big project at Nelson!
Ronda Clark (Ruth Clark): I will be coaching the
Haysville Swim Club again this summer. The Haysville
Swim Club was started many, many years ago by Glenn
Crum. Since then many of his swimmers have become
swim coaches. Under coach Crum, I swam summers
1970-1981. I now coach my daughter Bailey.
Mike Maurer (Haysville Middle): I will be working
summer school for both middle schools. I will be presenting, as well as my MTSS team will present at the KASSP
summer conference in June in Emporia. I have also been
asked to submit a proposal to the KU School of Education conference in June. This event is co-sponsored by
KU and KSDE. HMS’s own Ken Athy has been selected
to present at the technology conference next year. His
cell phone in the classroom unit that Alan November inquired about when he was here is what he will present.
In July, my entire side of the family will be venturing
off on a cruise to the Caribbean Islands. This is something my mother has always wanted to do and will now
become a reality.
Mike Mitchener (Nelson): I am planning on Biking
Across Kansas this summer
with a group of about 800 total.
It ought to be a real experience!
Over 500 miles or between 80
and 100 each day.
Crystal Means (Rex): My husband and I are not
wasting anytime after school lets out! We are going on
a 7 day cruise to Jamaica, Grand Cayman Islands and
Mexico and we leave the Saturday after our teacher work
day! We will also head to Texas for a family reunion in
July for a week.
Carolyn Brown (Prairie): Continue See USA first:
touring The Arches and Yosemite National Parks and Sequoia National Park; and taking digital photographs to
use in City and Country theme for my PreK class next
year.

Accomplishments
June Busby, LPN (Rex): This year with the help
of our Health Task Force we organized a Biggest Loser
Program at Rex and to date we’ve lost more than 525
pounds. We have such an awesome group of people and
we collected money and clothing beyond my wildest expectations for the family of Caitlyn Johnson. They lost
everything in a house fire and she is at Shriner’s Hospital
in Cincinnati undergoing treatment. I’m looking forward
to next year and all it will hold for us.
Marcy Aycock (Prairie): My most important accomplishment for the year - having the opportunity to work
with awesome students, families and staff at Prairie!
Regina Schutt (BOE): My most important accomplishment this year was achieving National Board Certification in Literacy.
April Davis (Freeman): I think my most important
accomplishment this year was that I felt like through Olweus and the Bully Prevention initiative I taught my students how to identify bullying and how to report to the
appropriate persons. Using this information, they will be
better students and friends.
Shenae Stein (Ruth Clark) As for what we accomplished this year....we worked REALLY hard on reading
fluency and our DIBELS scores show it. We also know
how to tell time and count money and we now know that
giving to charity not only gives you a good feeling on the
inside, but you might even win a pizza party for it. :)
Check out the classes being held at The Learning
Center. For more information, call Penny Schuckman at

recertification.
What Are Your Plans?
Continued from Page 4
Andi Williams (Freeman): My three daughters
(Alex, Aspen, and Auni) and I will be traveling to New
York City (which is on all our Bucket Lists). We are going to see the Broadway Musical The Lion King. We are
also making a repeat trip to Red River, New Mexico to
go hiking and whitewater rafting...with my parents.
Melinda Wren (Oatville): This summer I will be:
(1) traveling to Ames, Iowa for the Odyssey of the Mind
World Finals competition; and (2) traveling to China to
teach English at a middle school academy for migrant
students.
Janet Ennis (CHS), instructional coach, and Catherine Johnson (CHS), math teacher, are going to Belize
to in-service teachers in July.
Mike Maurer (HMS) - Achieving the KAMSA
award for the significant progress made in closing the
achievement gap is one of the best highlights of the
school year.
Andi Williams (Freeman): Freeman at the end of
the year. We believe we have successfully implemented
our bully prevention program. In its infancy, we are creating an environment where students are talking about
their actions and their feelings, and how they themselves
can learn to be a better friend to classmates. The adults,
as well, are learning what we once thought was addressing the important issues, was really just sweeping things
under the carpet. We are so much smarter now, but we
have so much further to go! Our “O-Team” (Olweus, the
name of the bully prevention program adopted at the elementary level) has been responsible for the planning
and footwork of getting things started as well as formulating plans for sustaining the program and keeping front
and center our important message that you, too, can be
at “Freeman Elementary. A Wonderful World Where Everyone Belongs.”

Rex Elementary School’s Health Fair on April 15
was a great success.
GraceMed Dental Clinic performed dental
screenings and cleanings on all 420 of Rex’s students.
Communities In Schools Coordinator Shaye

needed further dental treatment and provided the
parents with community resources on where to go if
they did not have dental insurance due to the reduction of the workforce at local companies.
Also, KU Med Center volunteered their time on
April 28 to perform free Pediatric Health Screenings to Rex’s 4th and 5th grade students. They did
vision, ear, throat, heart, and weight checks. Screening forms were sent home to parents to review.
The health and dental screenings was another

CHS Lady Colts Soccer Team
Report from Coach Jeremy Willig: The Campus
Lady Colts Soccer team has had a great season so far.
We finished 5th in the Titan Classic at the beginning
of the season and
have been improving ever since.
With a record of
10-4-0, the undisputed AV-CTL Division II League
Champions, and a
Regional ranking
of #5 for the past four consecutive weeks (through the
end of April), the Lady Colts look to finish out strong
and be in great position to host at least one post-season
game during regional play.
Leading contributors to our success is Senior Lorielle Slates with 9 Goals and 4 Assists, Senior Sydney
Chippeaux with 5 Goals and 5 Assists, Freshman Brittni
Carron with 6 Goals and 3 Assists along with many other
offensive threats such as Senior Chelsea Chavez, Senior
Amanda Elrod, Junior Bailey Martinson and Sophomore
Cassandra Brown.
Our defense remains strong, allowing an average
of only 5 shots per game, led by Senior Ashley Friess,
Junior Tori Wheeler, Junior Kelsey Keais, Junior Kaila
Martens, Sophomore Amber Friess and Freshman Britiany Ballard with Sophomore Kayla Sanders between
the posts.
This is a very exciting team to coach and watch. We
