CONSERVATORY SNAP SHOT
Definition
The Valor Conservatory for the Arts is a specialized and concerted college and career
arts and media preparatory program that offers students maximum advantage in the
pursuit of their discipline of choice, while furthering their ability to successfully carry
out Valor’s vision to prepare tomorrow’s leaders to transform the world for Christ.
Features
• Individualized six-course major. All Arts credit can apply to the major,
including the semester credit from the Game Changers Bible class.
• Special transcript and graduation recognition
• Customized demo reel and portfolio creation in the junior or senior year
for college admission or employment opportunity
• Private or small group instruction at Valor throughout the school year on a weekly basis,
excluding finals, production weeks or school breaks.

Fees
• The fee for The Valor Conservatory for the Arts for 2016–2017 is $1,500.
* Music students may choose to opt out of private instruction at a 40% reduction of the
tuition fee if they already have a private music instructor who they would prefer to retain.
CONSERVATORY ELEMENTS
JURIES, REVUE AND FINAL SHOWCASES
Juries are formal reviews by a panel of Arts faculty, which consist of a performance by the student, discussion of the student’s
progress and strategies to help them continue to grow. We will hold a mid-year jury during the Fall semester finals weeks and
an end-of-the-year jury in late April.
Juries are then followed by performance showcases (called Revues) in the Performance Hall of The Valor Center, with the midyear Revue held in January and the-end-of-year Showcase held in early May. These are fantastic opportunities for your student
to perform, shine and share their growth as an artist!
CONSERVATORY RETREAT AND JANUARY AWAY DAY
On September 2–3, we will kick off the year together with the annual Valor Arts Conservatory Retreat. This weekend is
a fun-filled bonding time that draws the students and faculty closer together and encourages spiritually growth and peer
relations growth.
After the Revue in January, we’ll have a Conservatory Away Day to take a fun break, reconnect with Conservatory
friends and re-focus spiritually as a team.
MUSICAL THEATRE CLASS
In the 2016–17 school year, we will be offering a year-long musical theatre class for conservatory students only. The class will be
team taught by our faculty and staff: Mr. John DeYoung and Mr. Kurt Muenstermann, Arts Fellow Ms. Lindsey Hutcheon, and
Vocal Coach Mrs. Jenny Timmons. Musical Theatre majors in the conservatory will be given preferential registration status
should the class fill.
GAME CHANGERS
Game Changers is a semester-long, half credit Bible class offered in the junior year, and is a required course for all conservatory
students in order to complete the program. The primary purpose of Game Changers includes:
• Examining what it means to be a follower of Christ as both an artist and creative entrepreneur.
• Reflecting on cultural challenges Christian artists must navigate in light of their faith.
• Collaborative, creative problem solving and idea development through a group project, specifically the development of an
original short performance designed to serve or inspire others.
• Additionally, students will develop their college and performance portfolio in the Game Changers class.
CONSERVATORY BREAKFASTS
We will hold three breakfasts per semester, some in larger groups and some in mentor groups. These are partially to talk
through things such as juries, showcases and the students’ portfolio, but also to provide some peer relation building time and
low-key worship amongst conservatory members and faculty.
CONSERVATORY COUNSELING
All families will be contacted to set up a family meeting with Mrs. Sheri Magehee during the weeks of August 8 and 15.
The family meetings are intended to help conservatory students with the following:
• Track direction and planning, including long-term course projections
• Discuss faculty mentor potentials to insure best fit
• Touch base on or plan for private instruction
Sheri Magehee will also:
• Join with the academic counselor for your student’s Individual College Planning (ICP) meeting
• Follow up and help as needed based on the August family meeting and the ICP meeting
• Be available to help your student with any need he/she may have for college and career pursuits

• Offer direction for unique college application requirements such as portfolios or auditions

have opportunity to take the stage twice a year for a
special Conservatory performance, with plenty of help
and support from private instructors and music faculty to
refine and perfect the pieces he chooses to perform.

Combining individualized, exceptional arts training with Christcentered mentorship, The Valor Conservatory for the Arts was
created to offer students unique advantage in their college, career
and life pursuits. Our custom-tailored six-course majors allow
students to go deep in their areas of passion, offering a unique set
of choreographed experiences and private lessons that not only help
students create at an advanced level, but grow in their ability to think
critically, work collaboratively, serve within their passions, and produce
art of true beauty and worth.
Our program is housed in one of the finest high school arts facilities in the
country, The Valor Center for Culture and Influence. The thirty-five million
dollar Valor Center is state-of-the-art, with a 750 seat performance hall, full-fly
stage, mechanized pit lift and superior variable acoustics. The facility also features
a national-level recording studio, television and film studio, black box theatre,
stagecraft suite, two dance studios, orchestra rehearsal suite and a full complement of
acoustically isolated practice rooms. The Valor Center allows us to offer national-level
arts training in collaboration with exceptional faculty and industry professionals.

some of the finest collegiate institutions in the world. College admission committees value undergraduate applications that show

of ability such as a demo reel. Through a faculty mentorship, a specialized arts counselor and dedicated media support, we help
every conservatory student produce an exceptional demo reel and assist each student in presenting his or her unique abilities,

advantage. For example, the Game Changers junior year Bible class helps students think through creative careers in light
of a Christian worldview. Likewise, many of our upper level classes utilize the fourth period in the schedule as a special
conservatory student-only focus time.

SPECIAL NOTES FOR EACH MAJOR:
ARTIST DEVELOPMENT, SONG WRITING, STUDIO RECORDING AND WORSHIP BAND
• Conservatory students in an upper level in these areas will meet four times weekly, with the fourth period being a
specialized session for conservatory students, focused on the development of a compilation album with Mr. Marty
Magehee and Mr. Justin Hooper. The extra small group time will also allow for increased mentorship and team bonding.
• All students in these tracks will be scheduled for private instruction starting in the second week of September and continuing on a
weekly basis, excluding school breaks, finals and AP testing weeks.
VOCAL AND INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
• Conservatory students in Valor Voice or Orchestra will meet four times weekly, with the fourth period being a specialized session for
conservatory students, focused on small group and solo performance. The small group time will also allow for extra mentorship with
Mr. Rick Paswaters and for team bonding.
• Private instruction for those focusing on vocal and instrumental performance will begin in the second week of September, continuing
on a weekly basis, excluding school breaks, finals and AP testing weeks.
THEATRE AND MUSICAL THEATRE
• Conservatory students in a second level or higher class in these areas will meet four times weekly, with the fourth period being a
specialized session for conservatory students. The extra time will be used to develop small group and individual pieces, such as one Acts
or solo performances. The extra time will also afford additional mentor opportunity with Mr. Kurt Muenstermann and team bonding.
• Students in the acting or musical theatre track will have expanded opportunity for private instruction encompassing work in character,
voice, audition preparation and specific work relating to production roles. During weeks where a group activity is planned, private or
small group instruction will not be scheduled. Private and specialized group instruction will begin during the second week of September
and continue on a weekly basis, excluding school breaks, productions, finals and AP testing weeks.
DANCE
• Dance conservatory classes will be split into two levels, Intermediate and Advanced. Auditions for placement in the appropriate level
will be held on April 30, alongside general auditions for prospective new conservatory students.
• Every third Thursday from 3:30–5:00 pm, Mrs. Lisa Odell, Conservatory dance instructor, will schedule a special master class in tap,
musical theatre, heels class or audition, typically with a professional guest from the dance and entertainment industry.
• At the end of September, parents will be invited to see the progress. (i.e. ‘A day in the life of a conservatory dancer’.)
• The following are the apparel requirements for conservatory dancers: ballet shoes, tights, black leotard, tap shoes, heels, jazz shoes,
tennis shoes. If students are chosen to test for certified Cecchetti ballet exams, there will be an additional cost.
• Mrs. Lou Ann Davies, Conservatory dance instructor, will choose a dancer to represent The Valor Conservatory for the Arts
at a Denver Ballet Guild audition.
