2012 Annual Report
Letter from the CEO
Our Mission
Mission
Dear Friends of Operation Homefront:
Life in the military means the only constant is change. In 2012, with the end of American
combat operations in Iraq and the beginning of the drawdown of U.S. forces in Afghanistan,
change for Operation Homefront has been imperative and fundamental. The needs of
our military men and women have shifted rapidly, and as an organization we made an
affirmative decision to embrace this reality and transform ourselves to meet the needs of
the heroes we serve.
As you will read in this report, Operation Homefront changed during 2012 in three areas
that will allow us to continue serving military families and wounded, ill, and injured service members well into the future.
Nationalization: In 2012, our Board of Directors came to the conclusion that Operation Homefront’s chapter structure was no longer the
best model to meet our ongoing and post-war challenges. Instead of independently-chartered chapters, Operation Homefront’s local
presence in communities across America will now take the form of field offices that are directly managed by our national headquarters.
We began the transition with 23 chartered chapters serving families in 27 states. When we complete the transition in June 2013, we will
have 22 field offices serving 45 states. So the transition has also been a sizeable expansion.
Expansion of Emergency Assistance: As part of our nationalization, all emergency assistance requests are served by a core group of case
managers, with almost all having clinical backgrounds in social work or counseling. Additionally, thanks to a partnership with Wounded
Warrior Project, Operation Homefront expanded its eligibility criteria for emergency assistance to serve those wounded, ill, and injured
all the way back to September 11, 2001. With a 300 percent increase in requests the first month, we know there were unmet needs
among our wounded we had not been able to support previously.
Permanent Housing Program: Working with several large banks, we started a permanent housing program we call Homes on the
Homefront. We take renovated homes donated by the banks and match them with military families. But that is only the beginning.
Each family is assigned a case manager, who provides transition assistance for a period of up to two years. If the family meets the
requirements of their customized transition plan, Operation Homefront deeds the property to the family mortgage-free. We expect to
have more than 300 families in homes by the end of 2013.
While the changes at Operation Homefront have been profound, there are many important things that have not and will not change.
We remain committed to being an exceptional steward of our financial resources. Because we controlled administrative and fundraising
costs, in 2012 the portion of spending directly on programs supporting military families rose to 95 percent.
Our financial position in 2012 remained strong. Thanks to the continued generosity of the American people, our staff and volunteers
met 151,150 needs. We are so thankful for our outstanding donors and their commitment to help our military families. We look forward
to 2013 with a continued dedication to serve those who make sacrifices for our country, and thank you for joining us in that cause.
Sincerely,
Jim Knotts
President & CEO

► Operation Homefront provides emergency
financial and other assistance to the families of our service
members and wounded warriors.
Vision
► Through generous, widespread public support
and a collaborative team of exceptional staff and volunteers, we
aspire to become the provider of choice for emergency financial
and other assistance to the families of our service members and
wounded warriors. Where there is a need we do not provide, we
will partner with others for the benefit of our military families.
Values ► Our values serve as fundamental principles
that govern the behavior of our staff, volunteers, and Board
members associated with Operation Homefront.
Our core values include:
▐ Honor Patriotism and Service to Country
▐ Do What’s Right
▐ Respect Others
▐ Perform With Excellence
History
► Operation Homefront, a 501(c)(3) organization,
was formed in February of 2002 to support the families
of deployed service members immediately following 9/11.
Headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, Operation Homefront
currently provides services to military families across the nation
with 22 field offices serving 45 states. The national headquarters
serves the remaining states.
Services
► Operation Homefront provides direct services
that alleviate a military family’s or individual’s emergency
financial burden, as well as counseling and/or recovery support.
Emergency financial assistance is in the form of grants (checks)
paid directly to mortgage lenders, auto mechanics, contractors,
hospitals, doctors, dentists and other providers. Other emergency
assistance, which an applicant receives in 24 to 72 hours, includes:
▐ Financial assistance
▐ Emergency food
▐ Emergency home repairs
▐ Critical baby items: formula, food and diapers
▐ Vehicle repairs and vehicle donations
▐ Furniture and household items
The need is greater than ever for basic necessities like food,
utilities and rent. Operation Homefront also has programs
providing transitional and permanent housing, morale support,
and school supplies and holiday toys for military kids.
Demographics ► The majority of our clients, 97
percent, are the lowest-paid service members — the E1 through
E6 enlisted ranks. Roughly 97 percent live at an income level
80 percent below the median income for the communities in
which they reside. Our target population is these junior enlisted
and wounded military personnel and/or their families who have
unmet needs due to financial hardship, injury, or physical or
mental detriment, or financial hardship as a result of service
in Iraq or Afghanistan. These may include active duty, Reserve,
National Guard and veteran service members. Overall, our
military are a diverse ethnic group: approximately 17 percent
are African-American; three percent Asian-American or Pacific
Islander; ten percent Hispanic/Latino; one percent Native
American; and 70 percent Caucasian.
Operation Homefront does not discriminate on the grounds of
age, ethnicity, gender, religion, geography or physical limitations.
Financial Responsibility
► We believe in total
transparency with our donors and volunteers, a partnership in
responsibility, and a commitment to ethics.
Financial information, including audited financial statements
and the most recent IRS tax filing (Form 990), are posted on the
website at www.OperationHomefront.net.

► In early 2012, Chase made a commitment to Operation Homefront’s Homes on the
Homefront program and became the largest donor of properties to military families. In the space
of just 12 months, 100 military families have received mortgage-free homes donated by Chase
through Homes on the Homefront. The needs of the program – and Chase’s generosity – go beyond
just donating the property. Some homes require renovation, and even disability upgrades to meet
the needs of injured service members. Chase finances these renovations and upgrades, and has
provided additional grants to assist with the costs of casework and financial counseling performed
by Operation Homefront’s master level Human Services Professionals who help military families
find a place they can call home.

Eckrich
► Food assistance is the number one request that Operation Homefront receives
from military families. As a food brand, Eckrich, a division of Smithfield Foods, wanted to help
meet that need. Eckrich partnered with Operation Homefront to support military families via
food assistance in 2012 through several programs. The formation of the Eckrich Food Assistance
Fund provided food to families in need throughout the year. Eckrich also participated in the
Holiday Meals for Military program, which helps military families put food on the table during
what can be a stressful and expensive time of year. In addition, Eckrich and Operation Homefront
hosted Military Family Thank You Days across the country throughout the summer months, which
provided military families with a break from the everyday with traditional American cook-outs.

supporting our military families.
▐ Through nationalization and the creation of field offices,
increased the number of states served regionally from 27 to
45. Five states are now served by the national headquarters.
▐ Through a partnership and grant with another organization,
expanded our eligibility criteria for emergency financial
assistance from the families of deployed service members
and transitioning wounded within two years of discharge to
all post-9/11 injured military service members and veterans

▐ Governor Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island proclaimed the
month of January in the year 2013 as “Speidel ‘Change
A Band, Change A Life™’ Month” in the state. Speidel, an
industry-leading brand of watchbands and identification
bracelets, based in Rhode Island since its founding in 1904,

▐ Renamed our program supporting the female caregivers of
injured service members as Hearts of Valor™. This program
met a record 760 needs for the wives, girlfriends, and
mothers of wounded heroes.

Philanthropy, which recognized Operation Homefront on its
best-rated list of military charities.
▐ The Holiday Meals for Military program gives military
families a break from the expense of meals during the
holiday season. Operation Homefront distributed 5,200
meals at 17 nationwide locations. Those events were made
possible by Walmart, Jim Beam, and Holiday Inn. Country
music star Andy Velo joined the Fort Benning, Georgia
