„Beautiful leaves of Autumn,
With the sunset hues they vie;
Gems for the glorious setting
Of the pale and pensive sky.” (Autumn Leaves by Martha Lavinia Hoffman)
Dear everyone,
Most striking in autumn, is what we see happening to the trees. Colourful leaves are everywhere, the cold season sets
in. And there’s one more thing we must not forget about. You, students have a new chance to prove your skills and
abilities at school.
What’s more, you can also hold the latest issue of BIG Magazine in your hands. 4 more students of the school have
also decided to join us and they did a great job.
Don’t hesitate to read their articles in this edition and join us, too if you feel like doing so.
Yours,

Millie, the first security guard as a cat
(www.nlcafe.hu\eletmod\20120623\macska-biztonsagi-or-foto-2012)
(translated by Áron Fábián)
Millie, who is a playful British cat, guards the warehouse in a toy store which is one of the largest toy stores in Britain.
She gets milk and fish as a salary.
Her colleagues not only like Millie but also say that they are really satisfied with her. The quadruped, purring security
cat guard can hear every little noise and she can easily jump up to the highest shelves.
"If she perceives any trouble, she will start meowing loudly so someone can get there immediately" - says one of the
cat's colleagues who, in contrast with Millie, gets money for his work while Millie gets milk and fish.
She got a badge and a uniform from the department store
In her owner's opinion, Millie has always been a very vigilant kitty
and she won't get bothered at all, if she has to be alone for hours
while she is "patroling". However the news doesn't mention what's
happening when Millie, the cute kitty, falls asleep on a big teddy
bear in the middle of her night shift. Anyway, the cat has already
got a uniform with a badge.
No excess weight on her
Millie hasn't got any problem with her weight not as the two
fattest cats who have been shown worldwide these days. One of
them is a 9-year-old tomcat, named SpongeBoB, who is living at a
refuge in Manhattan. His weight is equal with a 2-year-old baby,
although it's three times larger than a healthy adult cat: 13,6
kilos. Garfield, who is living in New York, is fatter than the
previous cat, because he weighs more than 18 kilos. His old owner
has died recently so the 10-year-old animal also waits at a refuge
for a better future.

An Interview with Noémi Puchinger
(by Hermine Diczig)
Noémi Puchinger, a student from Bródy Imre High School spent 10 months in the USA last year and we wanted to know
how she coped with this new situation, so we asked her about her feelings, experience…
How could you describe people in the USA?
-People are nice, funny, friendly and helpful. They always smile.
Did they have any ideas about Hungarian people?
-Nope, they did not have any ideas about Hungarians. But they know that
Hungary is in Europe, and that we live like them.(Some of them asked me
stupid questions but this was rare.)
What do you think about your host family?
-They were really nice and sweet. They treated me as if I had been a real
member of the family.
Did you have any bad experience?
-Bad experience... the only bad thing was that I couldn't go anywhere without asking someone to take me because there
weren't any buses.
What was the greatest benefit you gained abroad?
-My greatest benefit was that I've learnt the language. I can use it normally now. And I think I'm a little more confident
than how I was before I left for America.
What do you think, is the USA better or worse than Hungary?
-It's worse a little because there's NO public transportation in smaller towns. In a city there're buses, but between two
towns the only transportation is to get in your car and go. And I think we eat healthier. It's better a little because no
one will look at you weirdly if you act or dress differently from the average. (F.ex.: Go to school or shopping in
pyjamas.  )
Would you like to go back soon?
-I'd like to go back to visit my host family and my friends. I miss them.
Jokes about the US A
What do you
call a country that lacks a modern telecommunications system?
"Technologically backward"
What do you call a country that lacks a fully integrated banking system?
"Economically underdeveloped."
What do you call a country that lacks a well-connected public transportation system?
"America"
A
French in Paris asks
one tourist:
- Do you want to hear one funny
story about stupid Americans?
- Hey, guy, I'M AMERICAN!
- No problems, I can tell this story
twice, if you don't understand at
first.
An
American takes a sightseeing tour
around London. While watching around he smiles and tells
the guide:
"Listen pal, why is everything so small here? Look at this building for
example. In America it would be 10 times as big..."
"I completely agree, sir! That's the madhouse."
Fantastic Fruits
(by Kitti Mádli)
Autumn is beautiful and full of healthy fruits like apple, grapes, plum, pear and so on. They are very good for you… are
you curious exactly why? Then read more…
Apple:
It can be red, green, colourful and it’s really healthy. Full of vitamin C (ascorbic, it helps our
enzymes’ operations and makes our skin beautiful) , vitamin D (helps ossification) and
vitamin F (helps the wound healing and prevent high cholesterol) . It also contains a lot of
important minerals.
Grapes:
It has a lot of minerals (iron, magnesium, zinc, copper) . However it contains a lot of
sugar it’s good for the eyes and wine – which is made of grapes – is also healthy in small
portions.
Plum:
In Hungary people grow about 25 varieties of plums and all of them are really
healthy. Plums stimulate the appetite and the nervous system, too.
Pear:
It’s from Asia and it’s rich in vitamin C, copper and a good source of fiber. Like
plums, pear is great for the appetite and it’s also delicious so it’s really worth
eating.
Walnuts:
It contains vitamin C, vitamin A (necessary for the eyes and for ossification) , vitamin B1
(important for the nervous system, muscles and for our heart) , vitamin B2 (helps
detoxification) … so walnuts are not just delicious but they are very healthy too!
Fig:
It’s from the Middle East and it’s full of calcium which is good for our bones. It also
contains magnesium, copper, iron, phosphorus, vitamin A, vitamin B1 and B2… It can
reduce high blood pressure and even good when our throat hurts! Fig is a fantastic and
very tasty fruit so try to eat it as often as you can – it’s worth it.
What is your favourite fruit?
I was curious about which fruit is the favourite at school so I asked
several poeple to know which fruit is the most popular. As we can see
in the survey, peach is the most popular one with people (19%) , the
second is currant and cherry (both 15%) and people also like
strawberry and melon very much (both 13%) . It’s really good that our
tastes are different and everybody can find his/her favourite fruit –
eating it is really useful and healthy so eat it to stay healthy and be fit!
Natural remedies
How to stay healthy
(by Fanni Takács)
If you ever suffered from any diseases like catching a
cold, having a headache or stomachache, you should
know how bad it is to stay at home in bed, take
different medicines and pills, and wait for becoming
healthy again. I believe that natural remedies are much
better, and they are more efficient too. Here are some
examples.
The first thing, you can do to stay healthy is sleeping
enough. If you are relaxed and calm, your body can
defend itself easier from viruses. With 7 or 8 hours
sleep a day, you are able to concentrate at school, or to
be the best at your workplace.
Secondly, you should eat a lot of fruit and vegetables,
which contain vitamins and
minerals. These substances
can help your body to fight
against viruses mainly in the
colder months. If you are
sick, you should drink a cup
of warm tea with honey and
lemon. I believe it's the best
medicine for cold.
Thirdly, if I were you I would
wash my hands as many
times as I can, because it's
the solution to stop spreading
illnesses.
If you do some exercises everyday, you can be fitter
and stronger, it's good for your body and health and you
will also look and feel great!
If you have a headache there are several remedies, like
drinking a little Coca-cola or chamomile tea. There are
people who have a toothache regularly, I advise them to
eat crushed garlic with clove oil and the pain will soon
go away. If I can't sleep, I always drink a glass of warm
milk and I always count sheep so I can fall asleep in
minutes.
For coughing, I recommend a bit of eucalyptus oil
rubbed onto your chest. This oil is also good for blocked
nose, the steam can clear you up. A bit of lavender oil
on one's temple can stop
headaches and wheatbag
is also very useful, which
is made of plastic and it
can
keep
the
temperature
permanently. Its warm
part on your neck, and
its cold part on your
head really helps relieve
tension. Heated wheat
bags are also great for
aching joints.
A girl from S ulingen
(by Rebeka Csalló)
At the end of September our school had some exchange students from Sulingen. They spent more than a week in
Hungary, so I had a little time to make an interview with one of them.
Leonie Kriesmann is a German student. She is 15 years old. She lives in a village near Sulingen. She came to Hungary
with her twinsister, Larissa.
1.
What do you think of Hungary?
Hungary has got a very nice landscape. I liked the old-city in Veszprém the most. There are very beautiful buildings.
2.
Could you compare our school with yours?
We have always a 20-minute break after 2 lessons. In addition, we have double lessons in most cases. On the whole we
have more lessons. I go to the 10th class and I have 35 lessons a week. And some of my classmates have more than me.
 I liked everything. 
3.
Which program did you like the best?
4.
What foreign languages can you learn in your school?
We can choose Spanish, Latin and French. Everybody must learn English.
5.
What are your hobbies?
I play tennis, draw and I like jogging.
6.
Have you got a pet?
Yes, we have got a parrot, some fish and a cat.
7.
What is your favourite subject?
Arts and P.E.
8.
Why did you apply for the exchangestudentprogram?
I wanted to collect new experiences, to get to know the land and the people much better. For example: How can other
people here spend their free time, and how can other students learn? And in addition, I wanted to know what
differences there are between Germany and Hungary.
9.
What do you think of the Hungarian language?
I found it hard, but actually I wasn’t interested in the language.
A P o l l at S c h o o l
(by Dóri Havasi)
The international week in our school gave the topic to the survey. We asked about 80 students about the fact which the
most popular European country is. The answers were really different. Lots of people said larger countries or popular
holiday destinations. Most of the students voted because of personal memories or experiences. Finally these are the
results.
The winner is England. It's a very popular country in our school like around the world. Its reason is that lots of different
nationalities live there, and English is a worldwide language. Spain, France and Italy also got a lot of votes - Switzerland
has only a bit less. So the survey shows the students' opinions well.

S ave the environment
(by Daniella Wenczel)
Did you know?
Our world has put a great emphasis on environment problems since
the 20th century.
Nowadays environmental protection is a major issue in all of the
countries.
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?
or
What can we do for it?
A lot of schools provide a chance to do something for the environment. In our school selective bins are put on the
corridors of all floors, and you can throw the paper and the plastic in them. In addition, in many places of the cities and
villages you can find similar bins.
So: Put the rubbish in selective bins!
Air pollution is another huge problem. Modern technology, cars and factories produce a lot of harmful gases, and it is
very awful. If more people used buses, trains, trams instead of cars, the air would be less polluted.
So: Use public transport instead of cars!
A lot of rubbish and plastic bottles are dumped in the seas, lakes, and on the shores. People pour large amount of toxic
liquid in the water, so fish and many other animals die.
So: When you are near water, do not throw anything in it!
Trees and plants produce a lot of oxygen. People cut them down, they don’t plant another instead of them. They
lumber/exploit the large part of the forest, and thus, they reduce the natural habitat of the animals.
So: Plant another tree if you have cut down one.
WHAT IS „ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT”?
It is a value, which expresses, that for a given technological development how much ground and water is needed for a
human society to maintain their life and to absorb the generated rubbish.
Do you want to know how much your ecological footprint is?
You can see it here: http://tavoktatas.kovet.hu/okolabnyom.html
Don’t forget: One person CAN’T save the environment! But with a little collaboration the humanity CAN!
