Reminders!
The Annual Northern Arizona Watercolor
Society Library Exhibit will be running
from February 3 to the18th. Take-in is on
February 2 from 10:00 to 11:00 AM and
take-down will be 10:00 to 11:00 AM on the
19th of February. Thank you to all of the
members who are participating and please
remember to visit the exhibit.
The Quilt show is also open at the same
time. If you have any questions, contact
Pamela Fox Klauser at 928-282-3078.
NAWS has the months of July, August
and September 2016 set aside for a show
at Sedona Town Hall. Take in and take
down dates have yet to be decided. It is a
non juried show. Great time to have
paintings hanging over the summer months.
(Mary Ann Undrill will have more information
and sign ups at a later date.)
President’s Corner
Happy 2016 Everyone! New year, new
workshops, and new demos all for NAWS
members! We have a lot of new members
who are joining us, and hopefully you will
Diane
all get involved. This is a perfect
organization to learn, refresh and continue using
watercolors and enhance our adventure of this great medium.
So many great opportunities to be part of NAWS, you may
even wish to volunteer. It is a great way to meet members and
also take part in the success of our watercolor society.
The Spring show is our next exhibit and hopefully there will be
many entries before our March 1st deadline. We also have the
City Hall Show coming up which will be viewed during the
summer months....this is a new time period for NAWS this
year.
There are 3 workshops coming up this winter/spring, so check
out the specifics on our website to see if there are still
openings. These workshops are the very best avenue for you
to enhance your expertise. They are also great for beginning
students, as there are so many varied ‘experienced painters’ in
each workshop. Besides getting the best instruction available,
you can also learn from other students who have painted for
many years. Just observing their talent will give you great
insight as to their expertise. So sign up, learn, experience and
enjoy our favorite activity. You will not be disappointed.
This is the best time of year to paint as Spring is just around
the corner. Colors will be back and outdoor painting is
pleasant. You will want to venture out with Linda Slater and
her outdoor events. All dates are posted on the newsletter
and/ or our website, so take advantage of this group activity.
Lisa Aragona-King, Director of Nominations, may be
approaching you to help lead NAWS in the fall of 2016. There
are a few board positions open, and this is a perfect way to
help our organization to keep its success strong.
“Painting is just another way of keeping a diary.” -Pablo
Picasso
Enjoy your craft!
Diane

Update on Duane Swanson:
He and Bobbie are settled in our new apartment at the
Terraces Sr. Living. And we love it. Everyone is very
friendly. We have a lot of activities that are provided
every day. Keeps us as busy as we want. I attend a
watercolor class every Wednesday. He has 2
commissioned paintings to do. He and Bobbie attend 3
exercise classes a week to keep in better shape. He is
feeling well, and greatly blessed.

Our twice-monthly NAWS paint-outs are an excellent way to improve your painting skills. Not only do we get to
practice our drawing skills, but our speed improves as well. This is an excellent way to find which colors you like to
use. The camaraderie is also great, and this is a great way to get to know other NAWS members. Who knows? In
addition to improving your painting skills, you may just make some new friends in the process. Here are some
pictures to inspire you to join the paint-outs.

MORE PAINTOUTS!!
In addition to the normally scheduled paint-outs
organized by Linda Slater, several of us have decided
to also paint on Wednesday mornings. After our
successful NAWS paint-out at the Bell Rock ranger
station with 7 artists in attendance, several of us
decided to return there every Wednesday morning for
awhile to perfect our skills. After nine weeks, we felt
that we had completed Bell Rock and vicinity, so we
have moved to the end of Verde Valley School Rd.
Parking is at the Baldwin Trail trailhead with
bathrooms. We then walk to the end of the road
where there is a spectacular view of Cathedral. One
can paint Cathedral, the trees, the creek, or all of the
above. At the current time, we are meeting at 10:00
due to the cold temperatures. If you are interested in
joining us, contact either Sandy Beck or Cecilia
Binkley to be sure someone will be there.

NAWS Benefactor Is A New Author
Charles Swartwout has a special fondness for NAWS because of
his late wife's involvement with our club. Gretchen was a much loved
member who died too soon.
Chuck has donated a $300 prize in Gretchen's honor for many
years. Here is his note to us for 2016:
Yes, it is my intention to continue giving the $300. contribution in
memory of Gretchen as long as I live. I will be 95 next May 7th
and I am shooting for at least 100! Of course, God only knows if
this will be the case.
You may be interested to learn that I have just finished writing a
book titled "You Don't Die - You Just Change Channels!". This
will be published by the end of January and will be available from
Amazon in both paperback and electronic formats.
I think that this book will be of interest to most of the NAWS
members, as they are all getting older!
I will plan to be at the Reception in May and will be delighted to
help with the presentation of the award.
Saving and Salvaging Paintings Good paper, the last time I looked,
was around $4.00 per sheet. Let's suppose you have in your
enthusiasm started a painting and slowly it becomes apparent that
it's not working out. Trust me I have seen many students mess up a
sheet of good paper, also have done the same myself. So if you are
inclined to tear the paper up, thereby wasting $4.00 every time you
mess up. It should be said the only way you are going to learn is
by making tons of mistakes and this could be the point in where
you feel inclined to give up.
Spring Show Deadline Approaching March 1st
Hello painters. I hope you are taking
advantage of these wintery days to work
on paintings to submit to the Spring
Exhibition - the end of February is
around the corner.
And just in time, Mary Jane has
scheduled the Professional Critique for
the February meeting. Betty Carr and
Jan Sitts are kind and helpful (and
occasionally hilarious) Ethically, it is ok
to take this advice (or not) to tune up
your painting. Speaking of ethics, please
consult the Ethical Guidelines on the
NAWS website when considering what
to enter. It is so easy these days to copy
a photo or another painting from the
internet for a competition... this is really
wrong. Use your own reference material.
It's your reputation you must guard.
Call Sandy Beck (929-282-1391) if you
need help photographing your work and
preparing the file to enter. Flagstaff
folks, I can help out.
Keep Growing,
Marsha Owen
Spring Show chair
Some years ago one student told me they got so frustrated and mad
at trying to paint that she threw paper, paint, and palette into her
swimming pool only to discover it was making a big mess. With the
help of her son she cleaned up the mess by back washing the pool.
This is going to be hard to believe, but instead of tearing your sheet
up, do this: fill a bathtub up with to 2-3 inches of water place the
whole sheet under the water making sure it stays under the water.
Then place your hands containing a tooth brush under the water and
gently with the brush scrub the parts that are offending you, do not
touch any other part of the painting, period. Anything you touch with
the toothbrush will be removed. Again only brush the parts you don't
like. Hold the painting by two corners, lift it out of the water the paper
is VERY fragile.
I stick onto the tiled tub wall and let the water drain off, then lay it flat
until dry. Happy Painting - Jim Black [email protected]
