Department of Journalism & Mass Communication
University of Lucknow
assessed it as a 'Four Star University'.
'India Today' has rated the university as
the 'Ninth Best Institution' for teaching of
science in the country, with academic
input and infrastructure, being rated as
amongst the 'best three' in the country.
Qualified and competent faculty is
the University's most proud possession.
During the short span of its existence, the
University teachers have been awarded
two Padmavibhushan, four Padmabhushan, eighteen Padmashri and
numerous national awards like Shanti
Swaroop Bhatnagar Award, etc. The
services of many others are being utilized
by agencies like the United Nations,
World Bank, International Labour
Organization, USAID and the Planning
Commission etc. During the last five
years alone seventy five teachers have
received national and international
honours. They have published over one
thousand four hundred research papers in
National and International Journals.
Students too have brought laurels to the
University. In the last five years, more
than one thousand students have
qualified UGC-NET/JRF Examinations.
This is one of the highest selections from
a single University (across the country).
In the field of sports and athletics our
students have represented the country in
several international events.

The University of Lucknow came
into existence in 1921 and falls under the
purview of Uttar Pradesh State
Universities Act 1973. At present it is
one of the well known Universities in
North India. This centre of “Light &
Learning" provides opportunity for
scholarship and excellence in a wide
range of disciplines from Humanities,
Social Sciences, Management and
Commerce to Science, Law, Fine Arts
etc. Vast infrastructure and good faculty
available with the University enables it to
contribute towards mental, spiritual,
social and physical development of
around thirty thousand students directly
and one lakh students studying in
associated colleges.

The Department of Journalism &
Mass Communication came into
existence in 1992 with Prof. Surya Prasad
Dixit as its first officiating Head. Dr.
Rashmi Pandey is the ex-officio Head of
the Department. Dr. Mukul Srivastava, is
the coordinator of the Department and
takes care of the day to day functioning of
the Department. The department started
life in a small 12x15 feet room. Today, it
has a building of its own known as
' S A N C H A R B H AWA N ' .
The
department has a well equipped
'Electronic Media Lab', Computer Lab,
Photo Lab and a Library enriched with
rarely available precious books on
journalism, public relations, audio-video
production, computers, ethics, law and
skill of writing.
In this short span of time, the
Department today is a premier education
centre amidst 100 odd universities and
institutions in India imparting quality
Brief History of Department
Mass Communication is field of
study replete with career opportunities in
varied areas ranging from electronic
media to advertising and from
development communication to
corporate communications. The
programme covers a wide array of topics
with the aim to expose students to the
various areas related to Mass
Communication. Mass communication is
primarily the art of transmitting messages
effectively to considerably large and
diverse audiences using the mass media
for specific purposes.
Graduates of mass communication
are highly sought after in the job market
today. They are flexible, creative and
adaptive to their environment. Therefore,
they can fit into almost any industry in the
public and private sectors be it

communication students are trained for
careers in the media by undertaking a
rigorous program. Emphasis is placed on
meeting deadlines, accuracy, ethics, and a
cross media approach.

production labs. Students have the

areas, from journalism and video production
to communication theory and media history.

Facilities Offered
Media Centre
in the university campus. They do reporting,
cover issues and take interviews to make this
newspaper a professional one.
Students emphasizing print must take an
upper-level writing class that requires them
to write publishable stories for newspapers
and magazines. They also are required to
take a Quark Xpress based design course that
emphasizes publication of magazine,
newspaper, and newsletter formats. The
students in the practicum do it all publish,
design, write, originate. They experience the
real world of News paper in a classroom.
The department of Journalism & Mass
Communication is a actually a media centre
where students get to know about various
digital technologies related to the field. They
can brush up their skills in the studio, photolab and in the print lab. In T.V studio they get
training Video production on Digital Video
camera and Non Linier Editing set up. They
also have a well equipped radio studio where
they can record and edit sound. Students
also produce various radio programmes like
Talk shows, Discussions, Interview, and Plays
etc. In the field of Print media students to
produce their own newspaper with the name
of “Kul Sandesh”. Kul Sandesh is the
registered lab Journal of the department.

all the updated and current books
covering the issue of subjects of MassCommunication .Students have got the
catalogue facility. The library is also
equipped with recent magazine ,Journals
on the specific area of MassCommunication .library also equipped
with “Inflibnet” facility.
Computer Lab
Photo Lab
The department have computer lab
with Multimedia suite, Microsoft suite,
Adobe suite, and Quarkxpress which is
for desktop publishing and SPSS for
tallying the numbers from surveys.
Computer lab also has twenty four hour
Internet connectivity.
Library
Department have a advanced
Photo Lab, with latest D-SLR Cameras
and latest software for Photo Journalism.
The department is enriched with a
very well equipped library having almost

to gain an understanding of the role of our
discipline in society. Students who
complete the program will possess a
broad understanding of the foundations
of our field and acquire an in-depth
knowledge of at least one area of
concentration.
Publication
The Journalism & Mass Communication Department boasts four tracksadvertising, electronic journalism, print
journalism and public relations-while
maintaining the spirit of a liberal arts
education.
We believe that higher education
should prepare students for not only
career success, but also civic success.
Ultimately the department seeks to
stimulate intellectual curiosity,
imagination, rational thinking,
thoughtful expression, and independent
learning. These are the skills necessary
for success in any mass communication
related field. In order to allow students to
acquire these skills the Department of
Mass Communication couples hands-on
experiences with theoretical course
work. The department supports a strong
program of co-curricular, extracurricular
and internship activities to help students
